ANZAC
Thursday, 25 April
THIS YEAR ANZAC DAY COMMEMORATES THE 98TH ANNIVERSARY of the landing of troops from
Australia and New Zealand on the Gallipoli Peninsula Turkey, in World War I. Today, the significance of ANZAC Day goes beyond Gallipoli to recognise all Australians who have served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations. The spirit of ANZAC, with its human qualities of courage, mateship and sacrifice, continues to have meaning and relevance for our sense of national identity.
Lest We Forget WHY DO WE WEAR ROSEMARY ON ANZAC DAY?
WE WILL REMEMBER THEM
There are two strongly held beliefs why small sprigs of rosemary worn in the coat lapel, pinned to the breast or held in place by medals is synonymous with remembrance and commemoration. • Rosemary grows in abundance on the Gallipoli peninsula. It is widely believed that as there were no flowers on the battlefield, rosemary was the only greenery to decorate the graves. • Another belief is that in ancient times this plant was thought to strengthen memory. Greek scholars wore rosemary in their hair to help remember their studies, and the association with remembrance has carried through to modern times.
Every night at 6pm in our Club, we stop to observe a minute’s silence, while the Ode of Remembrance is broadcast to commemorate the Australian servicemen and women who have tragically given their lives while serving to protect their country:

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. Lest We Forget

mother’sday Sunday, 12 May
THE HISTORY OF MOTHER’S DAY The earliest history of Mother’s Day dates back to the ancient annual spring festival the Greeks dedicated to honour Rhea, wife of Cronus and the mother of many deities of Greek Mythology. Ancient Romans too, celebrated a spring festival, called Hilaria dedicated to Cybele, a mother goddess. The celebration lasted for three days and included offerings, parades, games and masquerades. Many hundreds of years later, early Christians celebrated a Mother’s Day during a festival on the fourth Sunday of Lent in honour of the Virgin Mary, the Mother of Christ. The more recent history of Mother’s Day dates back to the 1600’s in England. Here a Mothering Sunday was celebrated annually on the fourth Sunday of Lent. After a prayer service to honour the Virgin Mary, children brought gifts and flowers to pay tribute to their own mothers. Today, Mother’s Day is celebrated across 46 countries (on different dates) with millions of people across the world taking the opportunity to honour and thank their mothers for their efforts in giving them life, raising them and for their endless love and support.

Cooks River
sporting alliance In late 2012, a working group of local sporting clubs was formed with the assistance of the Cooks River Sporting Alliance (CRSA), a Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL Club initiative. This group meets regularly to brainstorm ideas that will assist grassroots sporting associations to deliver valuable sporting programs for a healthy and more connected local community. Clubs including Summer Hill Cricket, Canterbury Little Athletics and Canterbury Junior Rugby Club are offering local residents an outlet for sports participation and a place for community and volunteerism. Sports club volunteers are the second largest group after welfare sector volunteers, clearly reinforcing their place as a major part of our community. This working group has identified that one of the biggest challenges they face is the increasing difficulty in making meaningful connections with the broader community. Specific concerns vary depending on the actual sport, however a recurring issue has surfaced; promotion, liaison with local councils and encouraging engagement
by their members and the wider community has become more difficult. A formalised network under the CRSA offers the best opportunity to create connections into the future. Through the ClubGRANTS program, an informal connection for many organisations already informally exists and the CRSA will continue to promote our Club’s support of local sporting clubs, schools and disadvantaged groups. The CRSA will facilitate developing and implement programs for a more connected and healthier local community. Interesting fact: An ABS Volunteers 2006 Report found that of all “highly committed volunteers (those who average 6 hours per week) almost 53% volunteer in sport. However, in terms of donations, sports clubs are ranked amongst the lowest receiving only 8% of total donations. The Cooks River Sporting Alliance is aimed at addressing this imbalance.
Sub Branch Celebrating 50 years A celebration luncheon was held in late 2012 to recognise Members who have been with Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL Sub-Branch for 50 years. This landmark event was held in the Club auditorium and was attended by over two-hundred Members. NSW Governor, Professor Marie Bashir personally presented proud 50 year Members with their certificates. Members who were unable to attend the event due to distance or ill health, were either posted or delivered their certificates.
