President’s Report Members of the Club, on behalf of the Board of Directors I would like to express our appreciation in being once again elected to represent you. In addition, I would like to thank the Members of the Board for placing their trust and confidence in me to serve as your Club President for 2015-17. It is a great honour to lead our Club, and I am committed to contributing my knowledge, skills and experience to the role, ensuring that the hard work undertaken by Club President of 10 years, Neville Brown, is sustained. Neville continues to play a vital role as Senior Vice President with Junior Vice President Malcolm Tyler, together with the rest of the Board. Working together, we strive to ensure our Members and the Community are proud of this great Club. As a Board Member since 2006, I have witnessed and assisted the delivery of an exciting transformation of the Club from a local RSL Club in Hurlstone Park to a highly successful diversified business that has remained true to its vision: delivering value to Members and the local community. Success has been achieved whilst continuing to ensure that the traditions of the RSL are honoured here at CHPRSL, and at our satellite clubs Bargo Sports and Magpie Sports, as the Club continues in its role as a hub for RSL Sub-Branch commemorative and social events. At a Club level, success can only be achieved by building upon the Board’s strategy and action plans of recent years. During the next 2 years, I believe that the most important thing that the Board and Club staff can do is to continue to turn the opportunities before us into stories of success. I am honoured to continue the work of leading the Board in making your Club a welcoming, safe, inclusive place for people from all walks of life to enjoy. I look forward to seeing you at one of our great Clubs soon.

John Crowhurst President Thankyou for your patience while we upgrade the Starlight Auditorium during the month of June.

CEO’s Report Reflecting on the recent Centenary of Anzac commemorative events, I am extremely proud, as I’m sure those who attended will agree, of the quality of each of the events held here at your Club during this significant period that honoured those who served and sacrificed their lives. Without the efforts of those who served, we would have inherited a far different quality of life from that which we enjoy today. Each and every one of these events was overseen by a committed team, led by the Sub-Branch working in close consultation with the Board and Management of your Club, who had a vision that was executed to a standard that made us all very proud. In addition to this I would like to make special mention to the staff, builders and contractors who worked tirelessly around the clock ensuring that the finishing touches to the upgraded Bert Crook Memorial, Canterbury Rd Carpark and the Club facade were completed in time for these events. The highlight without a doubt was our Club’s first ever Anzac Day Dawn Service. I was deeply moved by the 1200-strong crowd in attendance out the front of the Club that morning. It was pleasing to see so many young faces in the crowd that were there to pay their respect. Likewise, it was satisfying to see people of all ages taking part in the Commemoration Sunday March, and showing plenty of rousing support to those who marched. If you visited the Club during this period you will have noticed the spirit of this very significant occasion has been well and truly embraced by your Club and it is our intention to continue with this in the years ahead. On behalf of the Board and Management, we also trust that you are delighted by the substantial enhancements to your Club that are designed to improve the facilities and experience for Members and guests. I can advise Members that at our Annual General Meeting the following directors were elected to the Board for 2015-2017: John Crowhurst Neville Brown Malcolm Tyler Steven Baker Michelle Boon Neville Rose Mark McIntyre

President Senior Vice President Junior Vice President Director Director Director Director

The Board and Management of your Club is formulating exciting long-term infrastructure and facilities projects that we look forward to announcing during the coming months.

Management apologises for any unforeseen amendments to scheduled events and recommends you contact the Club to avoid disappointment.

Our News Camperdown Bowling Club Canterbury-Hurlstone Park RSL Club’s plans to revitalise the old Camperdown Bowling Club have taken further steps forward, with a Development Application for the site submitted to Marrickville Council in May. Prior to the DA submission, Camperdown Project management presented updated architectural drawings incorporating locals’ feedback to interested residents.

Camperdown Project website launches Camperdownproject.com.au, a dedicated website for the revitalisation of the old Camperdown Bowling Club site is now live. The website has been designed to provide a one-stop, easy access location for interested parties to gain quick information and key facts on the project at a glance; to subscribe to e-news updates and see the latest project developments.

Happenings by Pocket City Farms Camperdown Project’s urban farming partner Pocket City Farms has recently started pre-DA preparation work on the site with permission from Marrickville Council. Over autumn and winter, steps will be taken to regenerate the soil to prepare it for crop plantings in spring and summer. After April’s crazy weather, Pocket City Farms has turned over the soil with a rotary hoe to break up the grass and weeds, and to expose and activate any dormant grass and weed seeds. After allowing the soil to rest for several days and gather a little rainfall, black plastic was laid over the site for several weeks, to kill off grass, weeds and seeds. Green manure crops are being planted over the winter, such as oats, woolly vetch, fenugreek, lupin and fava beans to regenerate the soil, as well as adding nitrogen and other nutrients. Once grown, they will be chopped back and added into the soil as organic matter.

Over autumn and winter, Pocket City Farms is regenerating the soil to prepare it for crop plantings.

“After April’s crazy weather, Pocket City Farms has turned over the soil with a rotary hoe to break up the grass and weeds, and to expose and activate any dormant grass and weed seeds.” Combined with plenty of good compost that Pocket City farms will be creating on-site over the winter months, this will introduce a lot of life into the soil ready for planting once the weather warms up.

Local schools attend the ‘Local Honour Roll Project’ exhibition

Inner west schools thanked for extraordinary contributions to Honour Roll Project Canterbury-Hurlstone Park RSL Club and the Canterbury-Hurlstone Park RSL SubBranch held a special morning tea at the Club on Thursday April 23 to acknowledge the extraordinary contributions made by schools to the Local Honour Roll Project. Students’ output from the project includes artworks, sculptures, poetry, collages, blogs and even a theatrical production.

A wonderful tribute to those who lost their lives Describing the artworks and materials produced by the students, Canterbury-Hurlstone Park RSL Club CEO Dean Thomas said: “The quality of the students’ work is extraordinary. Inner west students have made a wonderful tribute to those who lost their lives fighting for the freedoms we enjoy today.”

6

chprsl.com.au

“The amount of time and effort that the students have put into this project has given us a great deal of confidence that the new generation will maintain a connection with the stories and sacrifices of our country’s servicemen and servicewomen, along with those who supported them at home.” “Through the project, students gained meaningful learning experiences through an engaging research process which brought them closer to knowing who the people were and the importance of what they did.” Students undertook extensive research to document the lives of local residents who fought for our country. 10 inner west schools participated including: St Francis Xavier Catholic School Ashbury Croydon Park Primary School Canterbury Boys High School Canterbury Girls High School Ashbury Primary School Canterbury Primary School Summer Hill Primary School Canterbury South Public School Trinity Grammar School Marrickville West Public School

Claywork creativity for primary school classes and the community through kiln grant Students at Wilkins Public School are learning invaluable skills through claywork, with assistance from a $10,000 grant for a new kiln from Canterbury-Hurlstone Park RSL Club. Wilkins Public School P&C member Jo Boag says the grant is enabling students and the community to engage with creative claymaking projects – often for the first time. “It’s so wonderful to see students enhanced learning through claywork,” Boag says. “Thanks to the Club’s generous grant, we’re thrilled to be able to bring such an old and natural earthy material back to our school. Many of the students’ ceramics projects will be left as legacies for future generations of students to enjoy.” “Few art mediums kindle growth and skills in children in the way that clay does. It’s invaluable for sensory development, motor skills, self-esteem, discipline, selfexpression and problem solving. It also has a uniquely therapeutic quality that settles and calms children and holds their attention.”

Kiln grant helps drive community engagement The school is also engaging with local ceramic artists, and in the future art therapists, to work with special needs students and conduct workshops that will develop their ceramic art and design skills (such as glazing, kiln usage and art therapy). Sales of students’, parents’ and carers’ ceramics at school and community events are helping raise funds for the clay resources needed for school projects, and building the school’s arts programs. Since the kiln was installed in August 2014, ceramics fundraising has generated more than $4,000. The new kiln is also helping to connect parents and members of the wider community through a new ‘Platter Project’, which consists of platter-making workshops at the Bakehouse Studio. Platters will also contribute to fundraisers.

Kindergarten ceramics on show at Addison Rd Kindergarten students from Wilkins Public School have worked collaboratively to produce a ceramic habitat totem installation that goes on display in the grounds of the Addison Road Community Centre in mid-June 2015. The project has involved 20 inner west schools.

Hands-on with the ancient medium of clay: student of Wilkins Public School. The $10,000 grant was used to purchase and install a large kiln specifically designed for primary schools.

What’s been

Record turnout at Anzac Centenary commemorative events

Thousands attended commemorative services, marches and events at the club and in the wider community to mark the centenary of Anzac Day. The Club’s first Dawn Service was attended by a crowd of around 1,200 at the refurbished Bert Crook Memorial. The Gunfire Breakfast, attended by hundreds in the Auditorium, raised over $2,000 for the ‘Home for Heroes’ Project. Club Members and guests watched the Sydney Anzac March on the big screen and many enjoyed lunch at the Club and games of two-up. Locals also gathered for the Anzac Service at Picken Oval, Croydon Park. On Commemoration Sunday (Sunday April 19), local community groups and veterans marched from Canterbury Boys High School to the Bert Crook Memorial where a wreath laying ceremony was held. Many Commemoration Sunday attendees enjoyed lunch and the afternoon listening to a concert performed by the NSW Fire Brigade Band in the auditorium. The wide range of commemorative activities were expertly arranged by the Sub-Branch in close consultation with the Board and Management of your club. “Through our commemorative events and activities we have reminded future generations that the freedoms we enjoy today have come at a price. We should be grateful to those who sacrificed their lives and keep the memory of those who lost their lives at the forefront of our minds. Lest we forget.” “The incredible number of people who came along to the club’s first Dawn Service - from all age groups - made us feel very proud.” Dean Thomas, CEO

The Canterbury-Hurlstone Park RSL Sub-Branch: a long, proud history Canterbury-Hurlstone Park was the 3rd of the R.S.L. Sub Branches to be formed in 1927. The Sub Branch received its charter on August 28, 1930 and a Women’s Auxiliary was established in 1939. Of those original Sub-Branch Members, there were 55 World War 1 veterans, the majority of which were artillery personnel, however there was one Light Horseman amongst the group.

happening Canterbury-Hurlstone Park RSL Club’s first Dawn Service

Canterbury-Hurlstone Park RSL Club was proud to host their very first Dawn Service Our first ever Anzac Day Dawn Service was held at the Club on Saturday April 25 at 5:30am. This was by far and above the highlight of our recent Centenary of Anzac commemorative events. A 1,200-strong crowd attended the service to pay their respects, and the service was conducted at the base of the new monument adjacent to the refurbished Bert Crook memorial. There were very few spare vantage points left across the carpark forecourt. It was satisfying to see people of all ages who woke before dawn to be part of this significant occasion that honoured those who sacrificed their lives. The Dawn Service and all other commemorative events held recently at your Club, were expertly arranged by the Sub-Branch in collaboration with the Board and Management of the Club and it is our intention to continue this tradition well into the future.

EasterFest A visit from the Easter Bunny, a Mad Hatters’ Parade, a free ‘Aussie Freezing’ Show, a petting zoo and two $3,500 Easter Raffles ensured hundreds of kids and their families experienced an unforgettable Easter at CanterburyHurlstone Park RSL Club. Rabbits, chicks and Easter egg themes came to life with art materials, scissors and glue during the Mad Hatters’ Craft Workshop. A petting zoo gave kids fun encounters with farmyard animals and kids proudly modeled their Easter bonnet creations in the auditorium for parents and friends. The winning Easter bonnet maker took home a Family Ticket to the Royal Easter Show. Hundreds of Members visited the Club on Good Friday to take advantage of the Great Friday $5 Fishfest in the Club Cafe.

Masterplan

update

MASTER PLAN STAGE 2 COMPLETE, NEW PROJECTS IN PLANNING The recent completion of the rejuvenated Canterbury Rd façade and the $300,000 upgrade of the Bert Crook Memorial marks the completion of Stage 2 of the Club’s Master Plan. The Bert Crook Memorial, co-funded by Canterbury-Hurlstone Park RSL Club and the Canterbury-Hurlstone Park RSL Sub-Branch, was officially opened on Friday April 17 to distinguished RSL guests, Members of the Club and the wider community. A facelift for the Starlight Auditorium The Starlight Auditorium is getting a facelift, with new carpet, paint, curtains and chairs set to breathe new life into the space. Since opening its doors in the 1970s, the Starlight Auditorium has played host to a wide variety of top entertainment, from the early days of Gene Pitney, Col Joye, Mickey Rooney, Billy Thorpe and The Bee Gees, through to contemporary performances such as El Circo Rouge and our resident Canterbury Country. It’s also hosted the Club of The Year Awards, the ACE Awards as well as the Club’s commemorative activities and Members’ dinners. The Master Plan: what’s next? CHP RSL management is currently devising a series of long-term infrastructure and facilities projects that will be announced over the coming months.

Improvements to the Canterbury Rd carpark are now complete.

The Bert Crook Memorial has received a $300,000 upgrade.

CLASH OF THE STATES

MATE against MATE. STATE against STATE. BLUES v’s THE MAROONS. THE CANETOADS v’s THE COCKROACHES Whatever you call it, it is one of Australia’s greatest sporting rivalries born back in 1980 when New South Wales and Queensland first clashed for the ultimate rugby league prize – the State Of Origin shield. It was a single game with Queensland emerging as 20-10 victors, led by iconic captain Arthur Beetson.

Today, it is one of the most popular sporting events in Australia and Oceania, and despite being a domestic competition is regarded as the highest level of rugby league played anywhere in the world. It is broadcast in over 91 countries and is a national obsession in Papua New Guinea.

From 1982 onwards a best-of-three match series became the norm and players were selected to represent the state in which they played their first senior rugby league game.

Total victories for each side were once extraordinarily even, however between 2006 and 2013 Queensland won eight series in a row until the NSW Blues snatched victory in 2014. The current tally sees Queensland ahead with 18 series wins against NSW 13 with two series draws.

celebrity effect the

Australia’s current food obsession really started back in 2009 when a record breaking 4 million people tuned in to watch Julie Goodwin become the first ever winner of MasterChef Australia. When her first cookbook Our Family Table was published she also became one of our best-selling authors. She even has a regular column in the Australian Women’s Weekly. Now Julie along with Jamie, Manu, Nigella, Gordon, Po, Heston…are so famous and so popular, we know most of them just by their first names. They’re the rock stars of the kitchen. The rise of the celebrity chef and the proliferation and popularity of television cooking shows like MasterChef and My Kitchen Rules has changed the way Australians eat. They have opened up our taste buds to an abundance of new flavours and textures and turned us into a nation of foodies. We’ve come a long way from the days of the traditional “meat and three veg”. We now speak with authority about things like confit, croquembouche, snow eggs and micro herbs. And no one serves dinner anymore, they plate up. Foodie culture has become integrated into our everyday lives. It influences both what we eat at home and our expectations when we dine out. Research shows that more than a third of Australians who cook at home, that’s around 8 million of us, are being influenced by TV cooking shows.

According to analysis group IBISWorld, Australians are spending more than $10.5 billion eating out each year. In fact our spending on food has outpaced growth in many other consumer sectors. And the food culture revolution shows no signs of slowing down. Come tempt your taste buds and get a taste of celebrity cooking when one of our best loved and most popular food personalities Julie Goodwin comes to your Club.

“Having won MasterChef in 2009, my own life and that of my family has been profoundly influenced by a reality cooking show! And in ways I never could have imagined when I applied to be a part of it. But what I find interesting is the change that MasterChef, and other shows like it, have made to the way Australians think about food. We are collectively more aware of where things come from, more conscious of shopping locally and supporting Australian producers, more knowledgeable about what we order in restaurants and cook in our kitchens. I think it’s an incredibly positive change.” JULIE GOODWIN

Warm Winter Menu

As the weather cools down, our Executive Chef has been inspired to change the Viva Grill menu for the new season.

CHP RSL Club has a mission to reduce the carbon footprint and adopt the “pasture to the plate” concept.

“With winter on its way, warm hearty dishes would replace the light summer dishes. Warm entrees, such as smoked lamb ribs and for dessert, a sticky fig pudding or pear and chocolate crumble. A larger steak selection will be introduced, as well as change of vegetables to suit the season.”

We now have a herb and vegetable garden growing on the terrace, where our chefs can pick fresh herbs and vegetables and use them in our dishes.

Meet The WineMaker The St Hallett Vineyard was established in South Australia’s Barossa region in 1944 and initially produced fortified wines. The success of their first vintage of Old Block Shiraz in 1980 shifted their focus towards premium table wines which St Hallett has become famous for ever since.

The winery produces many fine red and white wine varieties, but is particularly synonymous with the regions ‘Old Block’ Shiraz, said to embody the very soul of the Barossa. It is robust and rich in taste, and as its name implies, is produced from ancient vines, some aged up to 100 years old.

St Hallett believe interesting blocks make interesting wines, and with their rich resource of old vines and access to some of the Barossa’s most prized vineyards, the winemaking team is constantly evolving and adapting techniques for each vintage.

Come share the ‘Old Block Experience’, hear more about the St Hallett story, meet the winemaker and, of course, share some very fine wine, food and great company.

Canterbury-Hurlstone Park RSL Club, together with one of St Hallett’s finest winemakers, are bringing you an experience ‘off the Old Block’.

Bowling along for 50 golden years

Lawn Bowls Sub Club at CHP RSL

Bowls Secretary Jeanie Brown, a member of CHP RSL since 1948, joined the Bowls Club in 1976 and has played an active role with the Bowls Committee since the 1980’s. On behalf of all the Lawn Bowls Members, Jeanie wanted to extend a very special thank you to CHP RSL to let them know how grateful all the bowlers were of the Clubs ongoing support.

Bowls Secretary Jeanie Brown describes them as a lovely, lively group of people who enjoy a game of bowls and a social get-together on the first Sunday of each month. Despite not having their own green, the CHP RSL group play at a number of local clubs throughout the area, as well as enjoying a longer coach journey every four months or so to clubs further afield. There’s also a weekend away each year and a festive Christmas party to look forward to.

This year will see a special 50th celebration event to commemorate the Sub Club’s golden anniversary on June 14. It will be held at Earlwood Bardwell Park Bowling Club.

The first Lawn Bowls Sub Club at CHP RSL was formed in 1965 by Ernie Guilfoyle. Fifty years on and the Club still boasts some 90 active and social Members, with the ladies outnumbering the gents two to one! (That’s 60 ladies and 30 men for those counting!)
