The People on the Pedestals
Grace Arredondo
The reigning dignified above were once the ones who strove among us and, marveling at their predecessors, embarked on a journey most strenuous. So, when the sun starts to stir, the hopefuls start the climb to stand on their stools that tower in the sky. But the ascension to the top is not an easy climb. Many succumb to the pressure; others delay, “biding their time.” The few who stand as victors, relishing their feat, only learn upon rejoicing that, once you’ve made it, you can never leave. You can watch them if you want; it’s part of why they’re there. The world says they are special, and that few can compare. Notice the newcomers proud and strong, empowered by our praise. Now see the burdened ones who wobble; when they fall, their weakness will be blamed. The whole point of having goals is winning Earth’s biggest prize, to be promoted to the pillars that regulate our lives. But to be this honored someone is life’s greatest lie. There is no lasting satisfaction in standing in the sky. So do not envy those who race to reach the top. Once they have succeeded, their struggles never stop. The people on the pedestals stand tall for you and me, working and knowing their fall from grace comes–inevitably.
