CHORLTON HIGH SCHOOL

BLUE BOX THEATRE

WHAT’S ON 2013-14

WELCOME TO CHORLTON HIGH SCHOOL Celebrating 10 years at the Blue Box Theatre In 2004 Chorlton High School opened and was proud to launch The Blue Box Theatre to the school and the wider community. The opening of the theatre marked the beginning of a new journey for the High School, its Specialist Arts College status and the diverse community it serves. In March 2004 Prime Minister Tony Blair visited and opened Chorlton High School from the Blue Box Theatre. In the May of that year famed Chorltonians, Robin and Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees, opened the Maurice Gibb recording studio as a tribute to their brother, and watched with pride as our students danced to their hits in the new theatre. The theatre, boasting flexible staging, a 300 seat capacity and state of the art lighting, sound and pprojection rig, then hosted a week-long celebration entitled ‘Opening the Box’ hosting Dance, Drama and Music events. The last 10 years has seen the theatre play host to hundreds of Dance, Drama and Musical performances from Chorlton High students, local Primary School pupils, professional and amateur groups, community groups as well as school events and lessons from across the curriculum. The Blue Box has been central to the development of Chorlton High School and has become a symbol of the arts in our school and in the local community; transforming and enriching creative opportunities for all. We are proudly celebrating its 10th birthday this year with a programme of events calendared in this brochure. The programme runs for the full academic year for us to celebrate the theatre’s heritage, as we revisit past performances and performers. We will also look to our bright future as we stage brand new experiences to continue the creative journey we started back in 2004. We look forward to welcoming you to the events throughout the year as we pay tribute to the arts, creativity and to this special building which remains central to the Chorlton High School community and beyond.

CHAT:SS (Chorlton High Arts Team: Site Specific) CHAT:SS started 5 years ago when funding was cut from Manchester City Council for a collaborative schools arts project. The Chorlton High Arts team felt that this kind of collaborative project was too beneficial to our students to lose. So we created our own project that was site specific based. Each year we choose a space in our own city, Manchester, and create devised pieces of Dance and Drama from a range of stimuli. A range of students are involved from years seven to eleven and every year the students are complimented on their creativity, confidence and professionalism. It truly is a celebration of the Arts in its best form; bringing Dance and DDrama together to explore interesting issues, students' opinions and exciting resources. This year’s theme will be performed in our very own Chorlton area to celebrate ten years at the Blue Box. Our theme will be ‘10’ and will be performed in the summer term to end an exciting year of Arts projects. We hope to see you there!
