Benjamin Britten: War Requiem Thursday, November 29, 2018 | 7:00 pm Saturday, December 1, 2018 | 8:00 pm Kennedy Center Concert Hall

National Symphony Orchestra Gianandrea Noseda, conductor Karina Flores, soprano Ian Bostridge, tenor Matthias Goerne, baritone Choral Arts Chorus Scott Tucker, Artistic Director Children’s Chorus of Washington Margaret Nomura Clark, Artistic Director Merging the Latin Mass for the Dead with antiwar poems by Wilfred Owen, a young officer killed just days before the end of World War I, Britten’s War Requiem is an emotional indictment of war as a heroic myth, which Owen called ‘the Old Lie.’ As November marks 100 years since the final armistice of World War I, the NSO will combine forces with some of today’s most gifted voices and choral groups for this epic work. Britten said he wanted the soloists to represent ‘the three nations that had suffered most during the war,’ and in this performance, NSO Music Director Gianandrea Noseda honors that tradition conducting Russian soprano Karina Flores, British tenor Ian Bostridge, and German baritone Matthias Goerne. Series Packages: This performance is presented by the National Symphony Orchestra. Series tickets are available through Choral Arts and the Kennedy Center. For individual tickets, please visit kennedy-center.org or call 202.467.4600.

Gabriel Fauré: Requiem Florent Schmitt: Psalm 47

Lili Boulanger: Psalm 24 “La Terre appartient à l’Éternel” Sunday, May 19, 2019 | 5:00 pm Kennedy Center Concert Hall

Scott Tucker, conductor Laura Choi Stuart, soprano Alexandria Shiner, soprano Trevor Scheunemann, baritone In early 20th century Paris, the lives and music of Fauré, Schmitt, and Boulanger were inextricably linked. Schmitt credited Fauré as his greatest influence and Boulanger knew Fauré as a family friend from childhood. Come explore the musical lineage of these three composers. Be transported by Fauré’s transcendent Requiem performed alongside Schmitt’s triumphant and declamatory setting of Psalm 47’s “O Clap Your Hands All Ye People!” and Boulanger’s exuberant Psalm 24 “The earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness.” Fauré’s influence on Schmitt and Boulanger can be heard in their psalm settings and paved the way for future generations of composers.
