Sonoma County’s Simi Winery is one of California’s oldest wineries. It was founded in 1876 by Giuseppe and Pietro Simi, who planted vineyards near Healdsburg because the area’s gently rolling hills reminded them of their native Tuscany. The historic stone cellars, built in 1890, are still used to age Simi’s fine wines. In 1904, tragically, both brothers died within four months of each other. Giuseppe’s daughter, Isabelle, took over management of the winery at age eighteen and continued to grow the winery until Prohibition began in 1920. Isabelle continued to make and store wine in the stone cellars during Prohibition, and when it ended in 1933, Simi was ready with perfectly cellared wine. After Prohibition Isabelle had one of the large wine storage casks rolled out to the side of the road and set up the first tasting room in Sonoma. Isabelle was active in the winery until 1970 when she retired at the age of eighty-four.
