CHIVAS USA vs COLUMBUS CREW THE HOME DEPOT CENTER, Carson, Calif. March 2, 2013 (WEEK 1, MLS Game #5)

7:30 p.m. PT (FS-OH)

Two teams looking to find their way back to the MLS Cup Playoffs open the 2013 season against each other when Chivas USA play host to the Columbus Crew at The Home Depot Center. Chivas haven’t been to the postseason in four years now, beginning a new era with José Luis Sánchez Sola in charge. The Crew saw a four-year postseason run of their own put to a halt last year – the last time they missed out, they won MLS Cup the next season. REFEREE: Chris Penso. Chivas USA have not won in Columbus since their first visit in their inaugural season of 2005.  The Crew have not defeated Chivas USA at The Home Depot since the first meeting ever between the clubs, a 3-0 win Sept. 3, 2005. Chivas USA had won five consecutive home meetings with Columbus until a scoreless draw in their last encounter in Carson on April 9, 2011.  Coaches record: Robert Warzycha vs. CHV: P9 W4 L3 D2 … Jose Luis Sanchez Sola vs. CLB: first game CHIVAS USA With a new man in charge and return to the club’s roots, Chivas USA are looking to make their first visit to the MLS Cup Playoffs since 2009 as the season kicks off. Jose Luis Sánchez Sola – known as “El Chelis” – has taken over the head coaching reins after Robin Fraser was dismissed from his duties after two seasons. TEAM NEWS  Chivas USA concluded their preseason campaign with a 5-1 win against the PDL LA Blues on Feb. 23 at The Home Depot Center. Giovani Casillas scored a pair of goals for Chivas, with Jose Manuel Rivera, Eric Avila and Tristan Bowen also finding the scoresheet.  Here’s the Chivas USA team: Dan Kennedy (Tim Melia 46), Mario de Luna (Bobby Burling 46), Daniel Antunez (Steven Purdy 65), Walter Vilchez (Carlos Borja 65), Eric Avila (Marky Delgado 65), Marvin Iraheta (Jose Manuel Rivera 46), Edgar Mejia (Emilio Orozco 80), Giovani Casillas (Carlos Alvarez 60), Laurent Courtois (Josue Soto 46), Miller Bolaños (Tristan Bowen 46), Julio Morales (Jose Correa 46)  Chivas USA concluded their preseason camp with a 6-0-2 in exhibition matches. The rojiblancos outscored their preseason opponents 27-8, led by forward Miller Bolaños’ team-high six goals and Jose Correa’s five.  “With each result we get, the group gets a little closer and starts building trust in each other. That’s why this preseason has been one of the most important so far in my time here,” goalkeeper Dan Kennedy said.. “I still say the most important game for us is the opening game against Columbus. I’ve been on teams that have gone [winless] in preseason and started off 7-0-2; I think we did that with Preki. What this is is a good building block, but you don’t gain points in this league in preseason.”  Since taking over the club, Sanchez Sola has made a number of remarkable moves – with Nick LaBrocca, Casey Townsend, Ben Zemanski, James Riley and Shalrie Joseph all having been traded away.  “With the group changing so much, I guess what I’m most happiest with is how close the group already is together,” Kennedy said. “We’ve had some obstacles, but we’ve found a way to come together. We understand how hard the season is going to be, but it’s important that through that we stick together.”  One of the newer additions with MLS experience is San Diego native Eric Avila, who was acquired from Colorado after that club picked him up in the re-entry draft from Toronto FC.

MLS GAME INFORMATION

“I’ve learned a new position and he has been helping me throughout the whole way,” Avila said. “It’s mostly about doing what I do best and making it stronger. He’s changed me over to a right attacking player, but it’s way wide. It’s more on the defensive side as well, but it’s up and down the right side. Before I was mostly in the middle. I also played on the wing but this is up and down, staying really wide and going forward a lot, which I love to do.”

Robert Warzycha returns for his fifth season in charge of the club, having posted a .500 record or better each season. TEAM NEWS  The Crew completed their preseason with a 1-0 loss to the Montréal Impact in the final of the Walt Disney World Pro Soccer Classic last Saturday evening. The game’s lone goal came from Justin Mapp nine minutes into the second half.  Here’s the Crew team: Andy Gruenebaum; Josh Williams, Chad Marshall, Glauber, Tyson Wahl; Dominic Oduro (Ethan Finlay 65), Danny O'Rourke (Tony Tchani 46), Agustin Viana (Matias Sanchez 46), Eddie Gaven; Federico Higuain (Ben Speas 69), Jairo Arrieta (Ryan Finley 69)  For the first time in the preseason, Warzycha was able to call upon his first-choice team. Federico Arrieta rejoined the club after spending January with the Costa Rican national team.  "[Arrieta] is always a threat to score," Eddie Gaven said. "He's always looking to get on the end of crosses, on the end of through balls. He's a very good finisher. Hopefully we can get him various opportunities throughout the game to give him a chance to put the ball in the net."  Gaven himself also missed a week of camp, before the final match of the Disney Classic, returning home for the birth of his second child.  “It was kind of hard because it's not like I could actually play with a ball because there was still some snow on the ground,” Gaven said. “I just did what I could do. Now I'm down here with the team to keep trying to get fit for the first game of the season.”  In the preseason finale, Tyson Wahl slotted in at left back, seemingly holding down the position heading into the season.  "It's hard to find quality players at any position, especially left back," Warzycha said. "You'd like to have someone over there who has experience. It's difficult to find a left back who is left-footed. There are always more right-footed players than left-footers. It's always tough."  Heading into the season, the Crew will also be looking to exploit a possible advantage in set pieces.  "Set-pieces are huge for us," Josh Williams said. "Our backline is probably one of the biggest in the league now. I think any time you can get the big guys forward, and with a weapon like Federico [Higuaín] who is always going to put it in a dangerous spot, it's our job to just get on the end of it and finish."  Added Warzycha: "I think we are going to be dangerous at set-pieces. They are part of the game and we're happy that we have players that can finish crosses and then we have very good service from Federico. If we can be dangerous [on set-pieces], we're going to win some games."  The Crew did complete their preseason camp with the Kirk Urso Memorial Match at UNC-Greensboro Stadium. More than 2,000 fans gathered for the game, won 1-0 by the Crew on Konrad Warzycha's 79th-minute tally. OFFSEASON TRANSACTIONS IN: MF Wil Trapp (12/13/12 - Homegrown); DF Tyson Wahl (1/3/13 - free); DF Chad Barson (1/10/13 - Homegrown); FW Ryan Finley (1/17/13 - SuperDraft); DF Gláuber (1/22/13 - Discovery); DF Agustín Viana (1/28/13 - Discovery); FW Dominic Oduro (2/4/13 - trade from Chicago); MF Matías Sánchez (2/8/13 - Discovery); DF Drew Beckie (2/15/13 SuperDraft); MF Konrad Warzycha (2/27/13 - free); MF Shawn Sloan (2/27/13 - SuperDraft); DF Kyle Hyland (2/27/13 Homegrown)

Chivas USA vs. Columbus Crew Saturday, March 2, 2013 – The Home Depot Center, Carson, Calif., 7:30 pm (PT)

Chelis Era Begins Chivas USA will kick off its ninth season when it hosts the Columbus Crew at The Home Depot Center as part of MLS’ March to Soccer on Saturday, March 2, beginning at 7:30 p.m. (PT). For more information please call 1-877-CHIVAS-1 (1-877-244-8271) or visit cdchivasusa.com. Follow us on Twitter @cdchivasusa and Facebook.com/chivasusa. Chivas USA wrapped up its six-week camp under new Head Coach Jose Luis Sanchez Sola “Chelis” with a record of 6-0-2 in preseason competition ahead of its meeting with Eastern Conference opponent the Columbus Crew. The Red-and-White outscored their preseason opponents, 27-8, led by forward Miller Bolaños’ team-high six goals and Jose Correa’s five. The Rojiblancos played six scrimmages at The Home Depot Center’s auxiliary fields and two on the road, including a win at the inaugural Las Vegas ProSoccer Challenge on Feb. 15, where they defeated Colorado 3-0. PREVIOUS MATCH Rojiblancos Stormed Back to Earn Draw in Season Finale Chivas USA closed out its 2012 season when it stormed back to earn a 2-2 draw at FC Dallas before a crowd of 15,805. FCD took a twogoal lead late into the second half on scores by Jackson and Fabian Castillo, both on David Ferreira assists. The Rojiblancos pulled within one on Laurent Courtois’ goal in the 90th minute, and four minutes later found the equalizer in stoppage time when Juan Agudelo – with assists from Courtois and Ryan Smith on the sequence – tapped in his third goal of the season. As the end of regulation neared and the Red-andWhite trailing by two, Courtois – who entered the match in the 80th minute – gathered a short pass just inside the 18-yard box from Ben Zemanski and beat goalkeeper Kevin Hartman to his right in the 90th with a left-footed strike inside the left post for his first goal of the year. Four minutes into stoppage time, Courtois would record his first assist on the year when he received a threaded pass from Smith on the left side of the box and served it to Agudelo, who controlled the pass inside the short area, squared up and found the back of Hartman’s net for the equalizer. GOATS NOTES & FACTS New Chivas USA Head Coach Jose Luis Sanchez Sola “Chelis” Makes His MLS Debut at Home New Chivas USA Head Coach Jose Luis Sanchez Sola “Chelis” makes his season debut with the Rojiblancos at home Saturday night. Sanchez Sola, a native of Puebla, Mexico, was named head coach on Dec. 12 and comes to the Rebaño Angelino with seven years coaching experience in Mexico’s First and Second Division. “Chelis” helped ascend Puebla to the First Division in 2007 and also served as head coach for Estudiantes Tecos and Correcaminos UAT.

Chivas USA vs. Columbus Crew Saturday, March 2, 2013 – The Home Depot Center, Carson, Calif., 7:30 pm (PT)

GOATS NOTES & FACTS CONTINUES Sporting President Dennis te Kloese Officially Presented Members of Rebaño Angelino to Members of the Media Chivas Guadalajara and Chivas USA Sporting President Dennis te Kloese was the key speaker in Friday’s Media Day in which he officially introduced new Chivas USA Head Coach Jose Luis Sanchez Sola “Chelis” and his coaching staff to members of the media during a brunch meet-and-greet press conference at The Home Depot Center. In addition, Te Kloese introduced the players Sanchez Sola will have under his guidance in his first MLS season. Jose Luis “Guero” Real, Director of Sporting Development, was also in attendance. The event was culminated with the unveiling of Chivas USA’s new away jersey, which was displayed in person by five members of the Red-and-White squad. The jersey will make its debut on March 24 when the Rojiblancos face Chicago. Three Chivas Guadalajara Products Join The Rebaño Angelino With a renewed passion and recognition of its 100-plus year heritage in Guadalajara and under the new total ownership of Chivas USA by owners Jorge Vergara and Angelica Fuentes, the Rebaño Angelino added three Mexican players who are products of Chivas Guadalajara’s renowned youth academy. Edgar “El Chore” Mejia, Giovani Casillas and Mario de Luna come from Chivas USA’s sister club with an impressive track record: Casillas, the youngest of the three at 19, is a young prospect who can play forward and midfield and who knows how to shine on the biggest of stages. As a member of Mexico’s U-17 team that participated in the 2011 World Cup in Mexico, Casillas scored the second goal in the title game against Uruguay, sealing the 2-0 victory at Estadio Azteca. Mejia, a 24-year-old midfielder versatile enough to play on the back line, also produced stellar performances with Mexico’s youth teams. Mejia was part of the original roster set to compete in the 2007 U-17 World Cup in Peru. An injury, however, prevented “Chore” from participating in the run that resulted in Mexico being crowned champions and making Mexican soccer history. De Luna, 25, like the other two, is a product of Guadalajara’s youth academy and made his debut with the First Team in 2008. The defender has also logged 630 minutes with Guadalajara in the prestigious Copa Libertadores. During the Apertura 2010, Clausura 2011 and Apertura 2011, De Luna made 13 or more starts in each tournament. Chelis Brings Two Familiar Faces With Him to Chivas USA As an experienced coach in Mexico’s Primera and Segunda Division, Sanchez Sola has had many players under his guidance and leadership, two of which have joined him in his first season with the Rebaño Angelino. Defenders Joaquin Velazquez and Walter Vilchez played for “Chelis” while at Puebla. Sanchez Sola and Velazquez were part of the team that helped ascend Puebla to Primera Division in 2007. The following tournament, Vilchez, a veteran and five-time champion in Peru’s First Division and mainstay with Peru’s national team, joined Los Camoteros. Chivas USA Adds Five Southern California Products To Its Roster With a renewed commitment to scouting and signing talent in Southern California, Chivas USA added five/six players from SoCal this off-season. Midfielder Eric Avila, a UC Santa Barbara product from San Diego was acquired in an trade with Colorado. Chivas USA used its second-overall pick in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft to select East Los Angeles native Carlos Alvarez, who played his collegiate career at the University of Connecticut, where he earned Big-East Conference Midfielder of the Year in his senior campaign. In addition, the Rojiblancos signed defenders Steve Purdy (Bakersfield) and Carlos Borja (Anaheim). Purdy, a Salvadoran-American, has represented both the US and El Salvador in international duty. The fifth SoCal product to join the Redand-White is midfielder Emilio Orozco (Oxnard), who has represented the US with the U-17 and U-20 squads. The Rojiblancos now have a total of nine/10 Southern Californians on their roster, led by team veterans Jorge Villafaña and Dan Kennedy, both from Orange County.

GOATS FACTS • Because of the MLS unbalanced schedule format, Saturday’s match between the Red-and-White and Black-and-Gold will be the only meeting this year. The format began last season and had Chivas USA traveling to Crew Stadium last September for the meeting. As the hard-fought, ball-possession battle entered the final minute of regulation, the Crew’s Justin Meram was able to secure the game-winning goal. • Entering their ninth season in MLS, the Goats are 3-4-1 all-time in season openers. • Chivas USA has had success at The Home Depot Center against Columbus. The Rojiblancos hold a 5-1-1 all-time advantage when hosting the Crew, outscoring the Black-and-Gold 11-6. • Saturday’s match is the 16th meeting between the two sides, with the Red-and-White leading the all-time series at 6-5-4.

Chivas USA vs. Columbus Crew Saturday, March 2, 2013 – The Home Depot Center, Carson, Calif., 7:30 pm (PT) UNION ULTRAS AND BLACK ARMY PROVIDE SUPPORT FROM THE STANDS Chivas USA is cheered on by two supporter groups at The Home Depot Center during home games. Game 1: columbus crew at chivas usa

MISCELLANEOUS TEAM NOTES Crew begins 18th MLS campaign The Columbus Crew begins its 18th MLS season and enters the year with an overall record of 205-193-93 … Saturday’s match (March 2) marks the earliest Crew season start date in club history, surpassing the previous earliest start date (March 10, 2012 at Colorado) by eight days …as a point of reference, the latest the Crew started a season was its inaugural campaign – alongside nine other charter teams – when Columbus opened play on April 13, 1996. Opening up on the road… The Black & Gold open the season on the road for the second-consecutive year after falling 2-0 to Colorado on March 10 in the first match of the 2012 campaign … overall, the Crew is 1-4-1 when beginning the season on the road and is 5-3-3 when the season begins in Columbus … and headed for an early test in West Securing points in the early months of the season is crucial to the success of a campaign … the Crew has earned points in 10 of the first 17 season-opening matches since 1996 and is 6-7-4 overall in the first action of the year. Beginning with the Goats Saturday’s match at Chivas USA will be the first – and only meeting -- of the 2013 season between the Crew and the Goats … in season-openers, New York is the Crew’s most-faced opponent (three times) while Columbus has begun a campaign against D.C., Colorado, LA, Toronto and the former Tampa Bay Mutiny twice. Series notes against Chivas USA Saturday’s match at the Home Depot Center will be the 16th meeting in series history between Columbus and Chivas USA … the Goats hold a slight series lead (6-5-4) and Columbus is just 1-5-1 all-time on the road at Chivas USA … when the Goats head East – as they will again in 2014 – the Crew have had success at Crew Stadium, posting 3-1-3 marks when hosting the Western Conference side.
