In prgress thesis project examines the opportunity for brick-andmortar retail stores to shift to retailtainment immersive experiences as a result of online retail convenience by redefining store windows threshold experiences.
The decline of brick-and-mortar retail stores as a result of the convenience of online retail is an opportunity for retail spaces to shift from the main purpose of product purchases to prioritizing a retailtainment experience. This is an opportunity to redefine the threshold user experience by investigating how the relationship of traditional store windows can become immersive experiences and blur historic archetypes.

The solid and void shape created by the rectangle and oval under-mount sinks allow for products to be displayed and placed. The under-mount sinks are made from natural stone which they will be lit from below creating a glow effect and further highlighting the experience. Products will be tested blindly. Products are packaged in the same way so they are not judged by their appareance but their use. If more information on the product is desired, the QR code on the bottle can be scanned to access the specific products’ purchasing website.
Blind Fragrance Samples: Visitors are able to pick the different paper flowers that they would like to experiment with or already enjoy and place them into the infused station. With RFID technology, the flowers are scanned and infused with a fragrance sample which matches the olfactory notes of the flowers selected. Teen Library
Site: M458 Forsyth Satellite Academy, 198 Forsyth St, New York 10002
Forsyth Satellite Academy is a transfer highschool which admits older students who have fallen behind in credits, dropped out, or need a fresh start. These schools provide small, personalized learning environments that can support students in overcoming institutional and personal roadblocks.
With the increased use of electronic devices in education and online resources, the area dedicated to digital media within the library does not correlate with this change. The wall surfaces of the existing library are lined with bookshelves with only a small computer section having access to power outlets. The laptops in the library are locked away and hidden. Thus, students are not aware of the resources available to them. Therefore, digital access is limited within the library and flexible use of digital media is not supported.
Freeing up sections of the perimeter wall surface will not only create more areas where digital media is supported, but will also increase student awareness. Additionally, increasing the number and making power outlets readily available throughout the library will increase accessibility. More students will be able to connect to uninterrupted online information at the same time. By providing space for digital media in addition to the existing physical media, this library accommodates different modes of learning. However, the digital and physical media should not separate the space but co-exist and connect while creating a flexible landscape. The digital and physical media will be connect and intertwined. Students will be encouraged by the activated surfaces throughout the library to transition between multiple mediums.
Digital devices are stored on open charging station which creates awareness and are accesible. Power outlets are included at every work surface and seat thus digital media is available throughout the library.Additionally, students want more color in the library space. Inspired by the colour and the bleeding technique used by the students during the textile workshop, the wallpaper design included in the library brings color and vibrancy to the space.
Students encounter and possibly read quotes from books or about books as they use the space and seating. These quotes could inspire the students to look further into the source/origin of the quotes.
There are two types of decorative letter lighting: cloud and scrabble. They are suspended at differnet heights to create more intimate spaces. The scrabble lights extend to the hallway to highlight the location of the library. Not only do these fixtures reflect the literature within the space but also the activites, boardgames, which the students enjoy in the library.
With digital screens and tablets will encourgae student interaction and connection. With ipads students can add quotes, both related and unrelated to books and see them appear on the screens. By leaving their mark, students customize their space and they become the designers of the library. As they share and connect with other students. Students will also be connect to the screens, ipads and books through the quotes on the seats and location of the origin of the quote. Table surfaces will also be writable surfaces, allowing the space to be use for spectrum of medias both digital and analog. Seat will have power outlets so digital media will be available throughout the library.
Collage
Exploration of the relationtionship between playgrounds and skyscrapers with inspirations taken from Tatiana Bilbao’s 2019 Unravelng Modern Living collage and LOT-EK’s Foldable #1 (2016).
As populations are rising globally, areas in are constanly being filled with sky scrapers, making parks and playgrounds grounded oases. Inspired by how architecture, environment, and people are depicted together in Tatiana Bilbao’s 2019 Unravelng Modern Living collage and LOT-EK’s Foldable #1 (2016), this relation is explored through the collage of analog black and white film photographs and vivid digital images.
Global Outreach Hostel
Site: Paliashvili 67 Building, Tbilisi, Georgia
Since Tbilisi is the threshold location where visitors will have their first and last impression of Georgia it is critical to incorporate and present Georgia’s diverse culture and the welcoming belief that guests are gifts from god. This hospitality is shown in many ways but is most apparent through food and feast. A supra is a traditional Georgian feast and a part of Georgian social culture. Thus, at this hostel as about coming together through a feast of culture.
The central double-height common area between the 6th and 7th floor incorporates the geography of Tbilisi. Tbilisi is shaped like a large amphitheater surrounded by mountains on three sides. Since the city is located between mountains this shape could promote community and coming together as they become the shape of the seats.
To include the nature of Georgi, overlapping translucent hanging foliage shaped mesh are hung at different heights to create an atmosphere of under nature of as light filters through. Recessed round lights will be used throughout for ambient lighting. Pendant lights suspeneded from the high ceiling between these foliage pieces to illuminate table surfaces.
Similar to the common area, the workspace continues by presenting the geology and nature of Georgia with organic topographically shaped seating and tables. The hanging foliage includes nature aspects while still allowing light from the exterior and access to the exterior street view.
The long topographic bench seating enables flexible number of seats while modular furniture can be moved to serve different group sizes. Thus, individual, small, and larger groups can be accomodated within the workspace.
Ballet Library
Site: Arlington Library 203 Arlington Avenue, Cypress Hill, Brooklyn, NY 11208
Launched in 2015, Memoirs of Black Ballet preserves, presents, and promotes the contributions and stories of Black artists in the field of Ballet, illustrating that they are an integral part of dance history at large.
With lower than state average percentage of people that speak English not well or not at all and percentage of foreign-born residents. Thus, easy to understand and universal motifs, objects, signs without the use of language are crucial. Performing arts (ballet) is able to connect people without the use of language
Giselle is a ballet that tells the tragic, romantic story of a young peasant girl who falls for the flirtations of the deceitful nobleman Albrecht. Giselle dies of heartbreak when the ruse is revealed. In the choreography of the Madness scene in Akram Khan’s Giselle’s performed by the English National Ballet, the dancers create rings and and circle around a heartbroken Giselle as she learns the man she loves has betrayed her. Later on in the scene, the inner ring creates a ring with a spreading top.
The rings are utilized in this design to create a central reading room and corridor. The central elliptical table and two curved tables on either side create this double ring. The circular corridor will be the central core of the library and reflects what MoBBallet is: a community that comes together and protects stories of Black artists and one another as Giselle was in the madness scene.
The circular ceiling connects the central reading room and the top floor. The central curved tables create the double rings while the curved wall can be projected on and the tables are touch screen. This space can be used for general study, but it can also be used for lectures, presentations, and workshops. One can use the table screen alongside other devices. The table includes sockets for charging any devices and the screens can also be isolated for individual use, or used as one large screen.
While for presentations both the walls, overhead screen, and table surfaces can be utilized to create an immersive experience. The space is open to both the first and second floors but can also be isolated with curtains for any more private events. By closing the curtains other visitors will not be able to walk through the space and will have to use the curved corridor instead.
The lighting in the first act of Giselle is warm and uses golden hour colors while the second act is dark and cold. A warm and cold palette is coordinted with the program within library. The cold section is assigned to the central digital area, as blue hues with digital, while the rest of the space is in the warm palette.
The exhibition space on the second floor is kept empty. The walls and ceiling are white for any projections and hangings. Exhibitions held within this space will display mostly visuals and images organized in the space. The perspective is of one side of the classroom, however the removable wall between the classrooms allows for them to be connected and become one large classroom as needed. There are wall spaces for ballet bars and mirrors and enough space for a piano so live music during practice is also possible.
Installation
Site: Corner of Pratt Classroom
Inspired by origami crames, this installation aims to reconstuct origami forms with the use of box joints and slotting joinery. Colour, light, and composition are used to add depth to the space.
This installation is a reconstructed representation of origami. I focused on origami cranes as this correlates with the window included in the site. Thus, I created a wall installation design that displays origami cranes by using planar triangular pieces. These pieces will be attached by slots and box joints. I want to connect the birds with the site by mimicking that a group of birds are coming through the window. I used color to add depth while the lighting creates colored shadows on the walls and ceilings.
There are two types of pieces: wall and corner. The pieces will vary in size and color to create depth. Pieces that are lighter in color will appear closer, while the pieces that should be further away will contain more darker planes. These pieces will be attached to the wall. However, some pieces will be hung. This is so that more pieces can be included to create a higher density of birds as well adding as depth.
