BACK SCHOOL CHIPPEWA FALLS AREA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT

Welcome from the Superintendent!

I

Dr. Brad Saron Superintendent

t is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2014–2015 school year! As summer winds down, we know your thoughts will turn to school supplies, bus schedules, and lunch accounts. In order to make your life a bit easier, we’ve put together a “Back to School” informational newsletter. We hope this information will support you and your family for a wonderful start to the school year.

Many of our faculty have devoted their summer to teaching summer school, writing new curriculum, learning about new technology applications, and participating in staff development. Our technology department has been working tirelessly on updating our website, so when you have a moment, please visit our newly designed website and let us know what you think!

We want to help you in any way we can as you enter the 2014–2015 school year. If you have questions about our excellent academic options, our personalized experience, our outstanding faculty, our co-curricular options, our support, or about our facilities, don’t hesitate to reach out. Let me say again that I am so excited to welcome the students and parents back to school. Your continued engagement and support are very important to the success of the children of Chippewa Falls. We will continue to effectively communicate with you and engage you as we work toward Educational Excellence for a Changing Tomorrow!

Brad Saron Sincerely,

Bradford G. Saron, Ed.D. District Administrator Chippewa Falls Area Unified School District

CHILD SAFETY & SECURITY:

New School Entrances The Chippewa Falls School District has spent the summer gearing up for a safer environment for our students. Our ultimate goal is to have you, our parents, feel a sense of calm when dropping your children off at school. Across the nation, despite many of the headlines, there has been a decline in school violence. According to researchers on school violence, this decline can be attributed to a handful of measures [USA Today]: n

Heightened awareness of a school’s culture, including how safe students feel there and how well they get along with teachers and classmates. n

A renewed focus on bullying and mental health issues.

n

Simple security steps such as locking exterior school doors and requiring all visitors to check in at the front office. n

Offering students easy, anonymous ways to report classmates’ threats.

As part of the secured entrance renovations, we will be training our office staff on proper procedures for allowing people to access our school. We will provide our staff clear guidelines and protocols on the proper questions to ask. While we want you to feel comfortable entering our building, we also want you to feel confident in the new safety measures.

Is your child riding the bus? The Chippewa Yellow Bus Company will send information to your home by August 14th regarding bus stop locations, morning pick-up times, and afternoon drop-off times. If you have not received bus number, location, and time information from the bus company, by August 21st, please contact the bus company. If your child is taking an alternative way home, any given day of school, such as riding their bike or getting picked up when they would normally ride the bus, a parent/guardian must provide a written note to the school. Your child’s safety is of utmost importance to us. Parents needing alternative drop-off locations for their child in the afternoon (such as a daycare facility) are required to fill out a Bus Deviation form at least one week prior to the start of school. The form is available from the school office or the Chippewa Yellow Bus Company. CHIPPEWA YELLOW BUS COMPANY | 510 E. South Ave. Phone: 715.726.2454 | Fax: 715.726.2455

SAFETY FIRST!

When Riding the School Bus

KEEP CHILDREN SAFE!

TIPS FOR PARENTS: 1. Please review bus numbers with your child. In addition, it is a good idea to have younger students wear or carry some form of identification with the child’s name, address and telephone number, as well as the bus number(s). This will assist teachers and drivers in making sure each child gets on the correct bus at the end of the day. It will also help drivers get a child home if the child boards the wrong bus. 2. Remind children about safety on and around buses. Classroom behavior is expected, but talking in a normal speaking voice is allowed. Students should understand that drivers need to concentrate on driving in order to get everyone to their destinations safely and on time.

Top 10 Bus Rules 1. Be at the bus stop early. 2. Respect the bus driver and listen to instructions. 3. Take your seat right away after boarding the bus.

3. It is a good idea to provide a book bag or backpack for younger children to carry artwork and papers home from school. Placing these items inside a book bag reduces the chance that a child will drop a piece of paper as he or she gets off the bus. Though school bus tragedies are rare, too often they occur as a child tries to retrieve an object that has fallen under the bus. Also, make sure book bags and backpacks do not have straps or other dangling items that can get caught in bus doors.

4. Stay seated at all times.

4. Please be aware that unauthorized entry onto a school bus is considered trespassing. For the children’s safety, please check with the bus driver before entering. Our school buses make hundreds of stops each day. During the first few days of school, students may occasionally not be picked up at their bus stops, or there may be a delay in getting children home. Parents should call the Chippewa Yellow Bus Company 715-726-2454 with any concerns or questions.

8. Look both ways before crossing the road.

5. Always get on and off the bus at your bus stop. 6. Get off the bus carefully, using the handrail. 7. Keep your head, arms, legs, and hands inside the bus.

9. Wait for the bus in a safe place away from the road. 10. Keep away from the bus if you drop or forget something.

Kids Facing Anxiety

Resource Information School is almost here! Returning to school often means seeing old friends, back-to-school shopping, and fun times for many students. However, for some students, going back to school can cause some anxiety, especially students who are new to a school. Here are some tips to assist in an easy transition for your children:

Just as it is often difficult for adults to get back into a routine, it can be difficult for students as well. Toward the end of August, start getting back into the routine by having your child go to bed and get up earlier. n For elementary students organize and label school supplies and pack the backpack with your student so they can see what they are returning to school with. This may help build excitement and will help an anxious child ease into the reality of going back to school. n For older students talk with them about what is going to happen and how they feel about it. Review their schedule and make a plan for success for each class. Contact the teacher(s) if necessary. CHIPPEWA COUNTY n Remind your child that there are adults to help them at school. If they HUMAN SERVICES need anything have them seek out a teacher, guidance counselor or a trusted adult for support. n

If your child is encountering more significant issues including threatening harm to self or others, or has highly erratic or unusual behavior, contact your primary care provider.
