Remembering Dr Tan Eng Liang (1937 – 2023)

In this sombre article, Chinese Swimming Club mourns the loss of our esteemed Patron, Dr Tan Eng Liang. Recognized as a true legend and a remarkable individual, Dr Tan made significant contributions to the growth of Sports Excellence within the Club. We would like to remember and honour Dr Tan Eng Liang for his invaluable contributions to Chinese Swimming Club and his unwavering commitment to excellence in sports.

In 2001, Dr Tan Eng Liang assumed the role of Patron at the Chinese Swimming Club. This honorary position reflected his deep involvement and dedication to the Club's development and progress. As an Advisor for the Club's Sports Awards Sub-Committee until 2016, he played a pivotal role in enhancing the criteria of Sports Awards. Dr Tan's influential presence in the sporting community greatly contributed to setting a new benchmark for the Club’s sporting achievements.

In 2013, Chinese Swimming Club had the honour of having Dr Tan Eng Liang as the Guest-of-Honor for the official opening of the Club's Heritage Gallery. He was recognized as one of the Club's Sporting Heroes for his representation of Singapore in the 16th Olympic Games held in Melbourne in 1956. Standing alongside other esteemed athletes, Dr Tan showcased his dedication and commitment to the nation's Water Polo team, leaving a lasting legacy.

As we grieve the passing of Dr Tan Eng Liang, it is essential to remember him not only for his numerous accomplishments but also for the values he embodied. Dr Tan's legacy lives on through each individual associated with the Club, serving as a reminder to uphold the principles of integrity, passion, and unwavering spirit.

Dr Tan Eng Liang's departure leaves a deep void in Chinese Swimming Club and the sporting community at large. However, his remarkable life and contributions will forever be cherished.
