Introduction

Chimera is an exhibition of works by Mary Millner and Daisy Millner. It takes its inspiration from the history of Hanbury Hall in Spitalfields, where Charles Dickens gave readings from his books, including The Pickwick Papers; the Match Girls’ strike in 1888; and Huguenot history - and it follows without sequence the idea of illusion (like a Chimera). These paintings, drawings, models, embroideries and prints are linked in their exploration of unlikely situations; places without faces, portraits in imagined landscapes and with a Dickensian attention to detail. Another reading of Chimera is in Greek mythology as a fire-breathing female monster with a lion’s head, a goat’s body and a serpent’s tail.
