Canada Education Park begins taking shape Robert Freeman The Progress The build-out of UFV’s new Chilliwack campus at the Canada Education Park got underway in earnest this year, although sale of the old campus property in downtown Chilliwack hit a snag. A $10-million grant from the B.C. government in December will go towards new student buildings and renovation of the former military engineering school that sits on the property, although preparation work got underway in April last year with $7.2 million from the provincial and federal governments. When finished, the new campus will include one-million squarefeet of new buildings, double the size of the university’s campus in Abbotsford, and room for up to 20,000 students. Education is going to become a major economic driver for the city as the new campus joins UFV’s Trades and Technology Centre, state-of-the-art training facilities for the B.C. Justice Institute and Canada Border Services Agency already located on the former military base property. The Canada Education Park is a joint venture by UFV and the City of Chilliwack to redevelop CFB Chilliwack, which the federal government had turned over

to the Canada Lands Company after the base closed in 1995. The military base had been a mainstay of the city’s econo-

subdivision underway. The city bought 200 acres of the property in 2005 for the education park, and UFV purchased 85 acres from the city for the new campus. In 2007, UFV opened its $21-million Trades and Technology Centre on part of the site. Sale of the old UFV campus near downtown Chilliwack was earlier deemed a pre-requisite for the move to the new campus, but after a Vancouver-based developer backed out of a proposed deal, officials said a new buyer is being sought and operations at the new campus will start next September. The campus will means jobs and spin-off economic benefits to local suppliers, and a university education without leaving home for Chilliwack students. The $40-million construction project includes renovating the engineering school, new buildings for classrooms, an office tower, a student “town hall” and an indoor courtyard. An “aboriginal gathering-place” designed like a native longhouse is also included in the plans. Not bad for a post-secondary institution that started in 1974 as the Fraser Valley College, holding its classes in church basements and community centres.

Eagle Landing starts to take flight The Progress The Walmart store opening in November at the Eagle Landing shopping centre on land leased from the Squiala First Nation marked what could be a new era in Chilliwack’s economy. With the opening of Galaxy Cinemas eight-theatre complex the following month, a Home Depot store nearing completion, and other retailers lining up for a piece of the action, Eagle Landing could become the largest unenclosed shopping centre in B.C. In addition to drawing shoppers from surrounding communities, the joint venture project between the Squiala and the Property Development Group may also change shopping patterns in Chilliwack. Downtown merchant Ken Popove told The Progress in April that shop-

pers following Walmart to the Eagle Landing, instead of the two malls south of the Trans-Canada, might return to downtown “specialty” stores, if road access is improved through the old UFV campus now slated for re-development. “It’s an opportunity to get

more people on this side of the highway,” he said. Downtown merchants saw a decline in shoppers when the two malls were built south of the TransCanada Highway. Walmart left its location at the Chilliwack Mall for the Eagle Landing develop-

PDG partner Keith McRae said the company saw a “jewel of an opportunity” in a retail development on the Squiala land because of its easy access to the Trans-Canada Highway to catch the eye of shoppers from Hope and Merritt heading to the ‘big box’ stores in Abbotsford. He also said there was a “pent up demand” for retail space on land not tied up in the agricultural reserve to justify a 600,000-square foot development, making Eagle Landing the largest unenclosed shopping centre in the Lower Mainland. In comparison, the Cottonwood Mall is 234,000 square feet. But without the Evans Road flyover and city council’s far-sighted purchase of a road right-of-way up to the Squiala land, the development would likely not have gone ahead for lack of access.

Rockin’ the Winter Games and more Katie Bartel The Progress The Sardis Secondar y Drumline cranked it up a notch last year. The band has always been somewhat attention seeking, what with its snares, toms, bass drums, synthesizers, xylophones, electric and bass guitars, bagpipes, and rockstar-like singers, but last year it took it to a whole new level – rocking out at the 2010 Winter Olympics. The school band caught the eyes of VANOC officials after performing at the World Telus Ski and Snowboard Festival in Whistler the previous spring. But it wasn’t notified until late last December that it would be performing. It had just seven weeks to prepare a musical lineup and to raise $20,000 to cover the costs and find accommodations and transportation. The community stepped up. The District Parents’ Advisory Council secured “frugal” housing inside the gymnasium of Howe Sound secondary school in Squamish. VANOC donated $6,000, $5,000 of which went towards Olympicissued uniforms. Participating students paid $200 each.

And in February, just a week before the Olympics started, the Drumline held a benefit concert at the school, which raised $14,700. In total, $34,000 was raised. The drumline thought it would only be performing in Whistler, but later learned that it would also be playing for crowds at the quarter final and semi final hockey games. And once the games started, the

musicians were invited inside to watch the games. Success didn’t stop at the Olympics though. The band was hired by the Pacific National Exhibition (PNE) to perform during the 17-day exhibition in August. And this year, it’s evolved into a marching band. It’s performed at Chilliwack Bruins games, the Macy’s Day Parade in Seattle, as well

A screaming blur of red and white Canadian flags filled the parking lot behind the Prospera Centre on Feb. 7. The Torch Relay Celebration in Chilliwack offered a surprising and heart-warming display of all-out patriotism and Olympic pride, the likes of which the community may have never seen before. It took months of skillful planning, hundreds of volunteers and attracted anywhere from 8,000 to 10,000 people. Chilliwack resident Dave Stephen got to be an Olympic torchbearer for the second time, in a year that Canada would win a record number of medals. He also carried the torch near Hope for the 1988 Calgary Olympics. “I feel very lucky,” he said. “The flame means hope. It’s emblematic as a symbol and it really resonates with people.” He was stoked. “It’s exciting to imagine carrying the torch along with 12,000 others across Canada,” he said. “I am thrilled to represent Chilliwack.” Torch Celebration committee chair Pat Clark so proud of the community’s torchbearers and the connections they made. “It’s a huge honour and it’s their moment to represent Canada and their community,” she said at the time. “What I’ve come to learn is that the torchbearers all feel connected to the thousands who’ve come before them. “This event is bigger than the sum of its parts.”

Miraculous run brings the fishers Jennifer Feinberg The Progress Sockeye mania hit Chilliwack hard in August when a miraculous run started heading up the Fraser River. The banner run that was estimated to top 30 million sockeye, offered the first recreational opportunity in years for local and visiting anglers to harvest the prized salmon, and it was completely nuts at any access point along the river. In the end it was closer to 25 million fish, but they don’t call it the meat fishery for nothing. Hundreds of anglers stood shoulder to shoulder to fill their freezers.

Excitement grew as tackle shop owners, and other related businesses dealt with the onslaught of traffic. It coincided with commercial and First Nation fishery openings, which triggered the opening for anglers. It’s exactly that world-class freshwa-

Liberal leadership candidate Mike de Jong, with support from counterpart George Abbott, wants the province to look at lowering the legal voting age to 16. That means some Grade 10 students, who aren’t even trusted to drive on their own yet – let alone study for a test – would help elect the next government. It would give youth a greater voice, but the real intent here is to generate greater voter turnout, which hit a record low at 51 per cent in 2009. It wasn’t much better in 2005, when it was 58 per cent. As far back as 1983, it was 70 per cent. Lowering the voting age from 18 by two years could also change the focus of elections, from, say, the HST, or infrastructure spending to tuition rates, minimum wage, or the environment. Certainly, issues discussed less in past elections could gain prominence as candidates try to entice younger voters. We could see social media play an even greater role. Would we see new parties, dedicated solely to issues affecting youth, sprout? Could we see younger candidates – as young as 16? Schools already discuss political issues during election campaigns, and even host all-candidates meetings. Students might take a greater interest in them if they knew their vote counted for something. But do we want political candidates pandering to the most easily manipulated demographic of voters, those who are too young to remember a party’s past sins? Lowering the voting age won’t guarantee a greater percentage of voter turnout. It would come at a cost, as well. Politicians would be better off examining why voter participation is in decline, instead of blaming a hockey playoff game. Maybe they just aren’t as interesting. Maybe voter turn-out has declined in recent years because voters have no one worthy to vote for? What voters in this province want is someone who will take the best interests of British Columbia, as a whole, to heart, not just the specific interests of campaign contributors, be they labour unions or big business, someone with the desire to make this province a better place, not just guided by their own ambitions. If people aren’t interested in politics it is because they have been ignored for so long they feel politics just don’t matter anymore. Lowering the voting age is a nice idea, but we think Mr. de Jong is missing the point. – Black Press

2010 proved to be a year filled with excitement To say the least, the events of 2010 have been pretty riveting. From natural disasters to sports to politics, there wasn’t a dull moment. Eleven months ago, on the tail winds of a warm winter, officials were furiously trucking in snow from Manning Park for the Winter Olympics. What began so tragically with the death of luger Nodar Kumaritashvili ended so triumphantly with Canada in 3rd place winning 14 gold medals, the most ever won at a Winter Games. But nature took a shot across the bow this year. Earthquakes, heat waves, floods, volcanoes, typhoons, blizzards, drought and landslides sent people racing out of harm’s way. A deadly snowstorm in southern Ontario stranded nearly 250 people. Torrential rains lashed the Maritimes, southern California and Australia. It has turned out to be the dead-

According to Swiss Re, one of the world’s largest and most diversified re-insurers, nearly 260,000 people died from natural disasters this year, the vast majority (over 230,000) as a result of the 7.0 earthquake in Haiti. Power ful earthquakes (those over mag. 6.0) hit worldwide Margaret starting with the EVANS Solomon Islands January 3rd (magnitude 7.1), Indonesia (rocked six times in 2010), Chile, China, Equador, India, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand and Turkey. And speaking of volcanic ash, a theory was floated this fall that ash from the August 2008 eruption of Alaska’s Kasatochi volcano might have triggered an algae bloom to boost food supplies for sockeye salmon that returned in such massive abundance this summer. Speaking of volcanoes, political explosions were, like the sockeye, in abundance this year. That magma blast was the launch of the hated harmonized sales tax coming out of the bowels of the Legislative building this spring with no warning. The lava flow of public anger finally took out Premier Gordon Campbell and that pyroclastic flow you can hear in the background was the meltdown of the NDP after Kwan et al

pushed leader Carol James from office. Nationally, there have been the rumbles from Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney about the risk of another global economic recession. Throughout the year the economy stuttered along and the central bank rate raised its benchmark lending rate 25 basis points in June, July and September. Things slowed in the fall and in the December issue of the Bank of Canada’s Financial System Review, it was reported that the main risk is the growing seriousness within the European financial system and its debt crisis. Despite this year’s modest economic growth in Canada, factors outside our borders threaten an adverse feedback loop. Should the economy falter, Carney expressed concern about the vulnerability of Canadians carrying too much debt should jobs go sideways.

The federal government has had its rumbles with the decision to keep more troops in Afghanistan past the 2011 withdrawal date, the miserly Veterans’ Affairs policies and the long form Census debacle. As for the push-back from veterans, the Supreme Court of Canada has given the go-ahead for a class-action lawsuit over pension payments. Good decision. On the plus side, Aung San Suu Kyi found freedom in Burma, Prince William and Kate Middleton finally announced their engagement (watch for an economy-driven wedding next April) and all 33 Chilean miners were rescued after being trapped in a gold and copper mine for 69 days. Even Prime Minister Harper was live on stage singing ‘Sweet Caroline’ at the Conservative’s Christmas Party. Go figure.

Les cleared, Sanborn charged Robert Freeman The Progress Chilliwack MLA John Les was cleared in June of improper land dealings after a 27-month investigation by a special prosecutor found “no available evidence” to lay charges against the former Chilliwack mayor. However, special prosecutor Robin McFee alleged evidence to warrant three charges of breach of public trust by former city employee Grant Sanborn. Sanborn’s court fight against those charges is not expected to start until February, 2012. He pleaded guilty earlier to charges of fraud and using a forged document. A sentencing hearing is scheduled for Feb. 17, 2011. McFee was called into the RCMP investigation in June, 2007 after Les’s name came up during a police probe into allegations made in 2006 of a “pattern of improper practices” at City

Hall. An Agricultural Land Commission review of land-use decisions in Chilliwack, sparked by the special prosecutor’s investigation, found 66 of 213 decisions on boundary adjustments for housing subdivisions made between 1991 and 2009 were “inconsistent” with ALC regulations. But Mayor Sharon Gaetz questioned the ALC’s findings after 2002 when the rules were tightened and municipal approving officers no longer had sole discretion in approving some landuse decisions without informing the land commission. McFee also alleged a “prodevelopment/can do” culture had been fostered by Mayor Les and city councillors that encouraged city staff to find “creative solutions to facilitate development,” which resulted in “a number of recommendations and approvals ... that did not

adhere to Chilliwack’s own planning and growth objectives as set out in the Chilliwack Official Community Plan, did not comply with Chilliwack’s municipal bylaws and/or did not comply with provincial statutes or regulations, including the ALC.” Gaetz agreed after the ALC review was released that city staff were encouraged to “facilitate development” after the city was hit by some hard economic times, but denied that any were asked to “bend the rules.” “I can assure you that since I was first elected in 1998, I’ve not been aware of any elected officials encouraging staff to bend the rules or to use them as guidelines,” she said in a statement. More than 80 land transactions in Chilliwack were reviewed by McFee, who was paid $172,643 for his work as special prosecutor during the 27-month investigation.

The Progress It was a tough year for the Chilliwack school district budget wise. After months of speculation, district officials confirmed at the first budget forum in January there would be cuts coming down the pipe. The district was facing a $4.7 million shortfall for the 201011 school year; $2.6 million of which came from unexpected cost pressures that included carbon offset charges, full-day kindergarten and unfunded salary, pension and MSP increases. And because the school district had

depleted its surplus funds the previous two years, it needed to tighten the purse strings. The district was spending 84 per cent of its budget on instruction, 3.3 per cent on administration, 10.2 per cent on operations and maintenance and 2.5 per cent on transportation. The trimming started at the top. In February, district officials announced 7.6 full-time executive, management and administrative staff would be cut in positions and hours. The district also cut principal and vice principal hours at nine elementary schools and all middle and secondary

schools, which was the equivalent loss of three full-time principals. In March, the B.C. Ministry of Education announced it would be allocating $99.6 million to the school district’s operating grant; an increase of $1.2 million from the previous year. It also committed to covering the negotiated two per cent increases in teachers’ salaries and benefits. However, because the ministry changed the way school districts could spend the money, it ended up costing the district more, resulting in a near $5 million shortfall. In May, Chilliwack trustees approved a budget that cut 53 jobs,

including 20 teachers, 16 educational assistants and 12 support staff to make a balanced budget. “We thinned our operation down, but we didn’t decimate one area,” district superintendent Corinne McCabe said in a previous interview. “We went right through the organization and trimmed a little bit wherever we could.” It also started charging parents for busing this year, $200 per child to a maximum of $600 to help offset costs. In addition, a twoweek spring break was implemented this year, replacing the previous one-week, as another cost-savings measure.

MLAs feels heat from HST anger ment led to the success of the petition, which needed the support of 10 per cent of registered voters in all 85 ridings in the province. But a recent poll suggested some softening of voter anger with a “significant number” of respondents in a focus group reconsidering their opposition to the HST “once they began to weigh the consequences” of eliminating the tax. A referendum on the tax is now scheduled for Sept. 24, 2011, but some candidates vying for the party leadership, following Premier Gordon Campbell’s res-

ignation, are calling for an earlier date. FightHST organizers mounted the petition drive, but recall campaigns must be launched by an individual, according to Elections BC rules. Forty per cent of registered voters must sign the recall petition within 60 days for the campaign to succeed. Twenty such campaigns have been launched in B.C. but only one succeeded - and the MLA in question resigned before the petition was verified by Elections BC.

Transit comes under fire Jennifer Feinberg The Progress Talk of making much needed improvements to local transit hit a fever pitch in 2010. Highlights included some almostnew buses rolling into town, and selfproclaimed “Chill-activist” Jennifer Bigham calling for a radical overhaul of local routes, frequencies and a new transit hub. Various levels of government were simultaneously moving ahead with master planning documents to play catch-up on the region’s considerable transit needs. At the same time many local residents started demanding bus service to the new Eagle Landing Development and Walmart. BC Transit is moving ahead with a long-range plan for improved transit options for Chilliwack and beyond. This

was made clear with the November launch of the Fraser Valley Transit Future Plan, with two-pronged public consultation process starting in January or February 2011. The long-term vision of the Future Plan will “complement” the just released Strategic Review of Transit in the Fraser Valley, which calls for a huge boost in local transit over light rail, from the B.C. Ministry of Transportation and the Fraser Valley Regional District. The first stage of the extensive consultation process for the FV Transit Future Plan will be focused on “listening” to feedback from communities. The idea is getting a clear understanding of local transit issues and concerns. The resulting implementation plan is expected by May 2011, will direct BC Transit and local government transit investment in the region.

When the school district and aboriginal communities jointly signed the Aboriginal Enhancement Agreement in February, they made a commitment to enhance and improve education for all aboriginal students. The Aboriginal Enhancement Agreement, which will be in effect until 2014, is a working agreement between the Chilliwack school district, Chilliwack’s aboriginal communities and the B.C. Education Ministry. Its purpose is to enhance the educational success of aboriginal students. Something that is desperately needed in the Chilliwack school district. Almost 14 per cent of Chilliwack students self identify as being aboriginal, and yet, success for aboriginal students in the school district has been substandard.

Tyrone McNeil, president of the First Nations education steering community, told The Progress that more than 95 per cent of Chilliwack’s First Nations students who started kindergarten never graduated. And the six-year school completion report, which was released in November, showed that just 45.4 per cent of aboriginal students who started Grade 8 in the district graduated in the district six years later; a six per cent drop from the previous year. The Aboriginal Enhancement Agreement is meant to change that. The agreement was developed through input from band members, community members, district staff, parents and students. It’s intended to improve academic success, as well increase respect and understanding of language, culture, governance and history of aboriginal people in order to create a better sense of school and community.

The Empress steps aside Gravel mining stirs controversy Jennifer Feinberg The Progress The sale and subsequent demolition of a crumbling downtown landmark was the talk of town over the summer. The sale of the historic Empress Hotel building to the city for $1.27 million went through on July 8, and the demolition wasn’t far behind. The clearing and leveling out of the site which measured about .8 of an acre, included the removal of hazardous materials after the demolition. It was all done by December. The pivotal downtown property was bought from Slipstream Developments by the city and will be held in trust and managed by Chilliwack Economic Partners Corporation. The original hotel at 9260 Young Road

opened in 1908 during a Chilliwack growth phase, and was hailed as a “credit to the owner and the to City of Chilliwack,” according to a Progress article dated Sept. 9, 1908. The last owners, Slipstream, had been striving for a relatively quick land assembly and redevelopment process, but it didn’t work out, mainly due to market forces at the time. Now there’s a clear view of the mountains beyond the site that hasn’t been seen for more than a century. Officials are exploring a range of possibilities for future, but there are no firm redevelopment plans in place yet. A Downtown Task Force was struck to help facilitate the ongoing revitalization of the area, including suggestions for that key piece of property.

Robert Freeman The Progress The gravel mining issue moved from its perennial place on the Fraser River to landbased operations with the release of the Aggregate Pilot Project. Opponents of the APP were incensed that the plan was negotiated behind closed doors, by Fraser Valley Regional District directors and officials of the provincial government and the gravel industry. The promise of public hearings before final approval of the draft plan, which proposed

red, green and yellow zones where gravel mining would be banned, or approved, or approved with conditions, did nothing to dampen their anger. And then the September approval by the BC Mines Ministry of a gravel pit in the Chilliwack River Valley, located in one of the APP’s proposed red zones, further inflamed the issue. A proposal to expand a gravel pit on Vedder Mountain and build a conveyor belt system to carry the material down the mountainside felt the full fury of public mistrust when it became known in October.

Residents in Lake Errock complained at public meetings that they have lived for years next to gravel pits, some of which the FVRD admits violate regional bylaws. But the regional district adds its court challenges have failed because the region does not have jurisdiction over the gravel pits governed by provincial legislation, one reason the APP was approved by a majority of FVRD directors in a vote late last year. New agreement for child care CARE from Front But Gerard Peters, treaty negotiator for the In-SHUCK-ch First Nation, which is included in the service agreement for the first time, said his personal view is that critics should give the new agency time to prove itself before judgments are made. “Of course, I’m disappointed that (Pennier and McNeil) don’t support the new agency,” he said. “But for Pennier to say that the new agency is no different than the

ministry ... is to ignore the fact that we have not yet taken back the authority, which the ministry removed in 2007.” “Pennier and others should feel free to offer up their criticisms in six months or a year when we’ll have a record on which we can be fairly judged,” he added. In 2007, the ministry took over dayto-day operations at Xyolhmeylh while the independent board worked on a new governance structure.

Xyolhmeylh will remain the agency delivering services in the Fraser Valley under the authority delegated by the ministry to the new society in the enabling agreement. There are 22 similar agencies in B.C. deliver-

ing child protection services under delegated authority.

Forsyth finally finds a home

Eric J. Welsh, The Progress Forsyth is one of those Western Hockey League underdogs you love to root for. Drafted by the Medicine Hat Tigers in the eighth round of the 2007 WHL bantam draft (175th overall), he was a long-shot to see any time in major junior hockey. That he even played one game with the Tigers was an achievment. But when Forsyth spent his 17-year-old season with the AJHL’s Camrose Kodiaks, it looked like the WHL dream was done. The Tigers flipped his rights to Moose Jaw for 19-year-old forward Matt MacKay, but he never saw a game with the Warrriors. “It was a good place and a good organization and they were very respectful there,” Forsyth recalled. “They told me I had a great shot at making the team, but it came down to numbers. They had younger guys, and they were very up front about what they were doing.” They sent him to the Bruins on the eve of the 2010-11 regular season in exchange for a conditional bantam draft pick — only slightly more valuable a bag of hockey pucks. It is here in Chilliwack that someone finally gave him a chance. Bruins bench boss Marc Habscheid inserted the 18-year-old into the lineup on opening night, and there he has stayed for all but one of Chilliwack’s regular season games. He was never going to be an offensive star, as his four goals and eight points this year

But with good wheels and hockey sense, Forsyth has established himself as a reliable defensive player, a fixture on Chilliwack’s third line. “I’ve gotten good feedback from the coaches, and I’m trying to bring what I can to the table,” Forsyth said. “I’m pretty happy with the way things have gone for me so far.” More than willing to stick his nose into any on-ice situation, Forsyth’s tenaciousness comes from growing up with two older siblings. Both sports can be frus-

trating, and you can either blow up or you can calm down and get back at it.” It should come as no surprise that Forsyth’s first WHL goal was a golf shot in disguise. During an Oct. 13 road game in Everett, he collected a puck in the slot and sandwedged a shot, rainbowing the puck up and over Silvertips stopper Kent Simpson. “It was one of my more interesting goals for sure,” he said with a chuckle. “I’ll take 15 of the worst goals people could imagine as long as they go in, but my dad still bugs me about that one.” Forsyth and the Bruins are at home New Years Eve, hosting Moose Jaw.

Chilliwack FC shakes up academies

Eric J. Welsh, The Progress Once a month, the Chilliwack Progress is working to bring you up to date on the goings-on of Chilliwack FC, one of the community’s largest minor sports organizations. This month, we take a tour of CFC’s evolving academy programs. The never ending quest to get bigger and better has led Chilliwack FC to make some changes to their academy programs. Head coach/technical director Glenn Wilson has supervised the launch of four new-look programs designed to replace the old-look ACES Academy. It starts at the top with CFC’s Player Academy. For boys and girls (now separated), its stated goal is to take Chilliwack’s best of the best and make them better. “These players go through a selection process and it’s not a case of come-one-come-all,” Wilson explained. “The criteria is obviously their ability along with their commitment to training, their attitude and ambition.” The hand-picked players (U-12 to U-15) work in small groups bi-weekly

CFC soccer coaches going back to school The players aren’t the only ones expected to improve in CFC. The coaching staff carries expectations as well, and the executive is always trying to dream up new ideas to make them better at what they do. To that end, a first for the club. “We’ve set up a coaches field trip,” Wilson explained. CFC will take a dozen or so rep-level coaches down the I-5 to Seattle in

February. They will spend several hours on the field and in the classroom getting specialized instruction from the folks at All-Sports School. “It’s been running for a number of years and it is very highly thought of,” Wilson said. “We spend a lot of time in our academies developing our players, and this is a good step towards developing our coaches. Getting them out to these clinics is highly

beneficial.” A lot of the training will be position-specific, with emphasis on tactical concepts. The coaching staff of the NCAA University of Washington Huskies leads the weekend. Husky head coach Dean Wurzberger starts the clinic with a three-prong seminar discussing the 2010 World Cup and its benefits for the youth soccer coach, modern trends in soccer coaching and counter-

attack strategy. Wurzberger’s assistants (Brandon Prideaux and Brendan Bourdage) handle additional sessions. Stanford University assistant coach Theresa Wagner will offer her thoughts on combination play, goal-scoring mentality and runs off the ball. ISRAEL Howard Albert

April 9, 1921 to Dec. 11, 2010 Howard Albert Israel passed away from a heart attack at the Chilliwack General HospiISRAEL tal on Saturday December 11, 2010, at the age of 89. He is dearly missed and remembered by his wife Edna M. Israel and numerous family members. He was born on April 9, 1921 to Albert Israel & Cathrine Dennison in Mt Lehman, B.C. He moved to the Yukonin 1950 where he worked on the river boats. In Mt Lehman he did gardening, haying and wood cutting for 10 years. There will be a service on Saturday January 8, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Mt. Lehman United Church, in Mt. Lehman B.C. Tea to follow. Family would like to express many thanks to Dr. Kay Ho, the nurses and doctors on the third ﬂoor at the Chilliwack General Hospital. In lieu of ﬂowers donations can be made to charity of choice.

On December 21, 2010, surrounded by all whom she loved, Stella was ushered into the pres- KIRKLEVY ence of her dear Lord and Saviour at the age of 66. She is pre-deceased by her son-in-law, Steven and survived by her loving husband for 47 years, John, her daughters, Dawn, (Stefano), Jenny, Kimberley, (Jason), and Melanie, (Robert) and her son, John Jr. (Kerianne), her twin brother, Roy as well as 12 grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren. Stella Wells was born on December 16, 1944 in St. John’s, Newfoundland and grew up in Bonavista. She moved to Montreal in 1962, where she met the love of her life, John Kirklevy and they were married on Feb. 16 1963. Following her husband to Marathon, Ontario in 1976 with five children in tow, Stella was not only a full-time mother, but assisted John in planting the first Pentecostal church in that town. It was in 1979 that the family made their final move to Chilliwack, BC. Stella continued to raise the children and also became a long-term care aide for 21 years. Upon retiring, Stella was able to devote more time to her favourite hobbies, quilting and gardening. Stella had a deep and unshakeable faith in Jesus Christ. She worshipped God as she lived her life, with vibrancy and boldness. Nearing the end of her life, Stella showed remarkable courage and looked forward expectantly to “going home.” Typically, her only concern was for the wellbeing of her loved ones in her absence. A faithful wife, adoring mother, loving sister and devoted grandmother and great-grandmother, she will be deeply missed. A Visitation will be held on Tuesday December 28,2010 from 7:009:00 PM from Woodlawn- Mt. Cheam Funeral Home, 45865 Hocking Ave. Chilliwack. Private Burial arrangements. A Celebration of her life will be held on Thursday December 30,2010 at 1:00 PM from First Ave Christian Assembly Church, 46510 First Ave. Chilliwack . Reception to follow.
