No transit to Eagle Landing in short term But city is aware of the call for bus service to the new shopping area Jennifer Feinberg The Progress Chilliwack residents are starting to press city officials about when bus service to the Walmart on Eagle Landing Parkway will start. “The answer is we’re working on it,” said Mayor Sharon Gaetz, who said city hall is currently fielding at least one call a week on the topic. The closest bus stop at the moment is near Stream, but the big-box store is still another 300 metres away. “Council is in discussions with the transportation advisory committee and several options are being weighed,” she said. While travelling on the Santa bus recently, the mayor had several riders specifically requesting a bus route to the new retail development known as Eagle Landing, located north of the Evans overpass. “We know that people who used to take the bus to shop at the malls, are missing that opportunity with new location,” she said. “We’re telling them it’s in the works, but it may not happen immediately.” One transit priority the city is looking at is a bus from Sardis to downtown, with the possibility of service every 15 minutes. Another is a route that would go along Evans Road to Eagle Landing Parkway, down Ashwell, past Prospera Centre and along Hodgins to the hospital and back again. “In order to do that it would take two buses and two drivers, and all the associated costs and maintenance,” said Gaetz. “I know it seems like a simple problem with a simple solution, but it turns out it’s not as simple as some may think.” jfeinberg@theprogress.com

Gary Palaniuk holds one of the flood lights he rewired to use in his outdoor Christmas extravaganza.

Taking Christmas lights to a new level Katie Bartel The Progress Gary Palaniuk was never a Christmas lights kind of guy. They were a waste of time, cost too much money, looked tacky, and were a major storage hassle. For almost 10 years, his house on Diamond Crescent went through the holiday season with not one light tacked to it. But then last year, when his soon-to-be wife Ashala moved in, everything changed. She wanted lights. She loved Christmas lights, loved seeing houses glow with the festive red, green, blue,

white, any coloured lights. Gary put up a fight, but eventually caved and allowed Ashala a set of lights on the bushes in the front yard. “But no lights on the gutters,” he said firmly. Fast forward a year. The Palaniuk house is now aflutter of colour. Four thousand LED lights – three sets of which are on the gutters – and six flood lights flashing purples, blues, reds, greens. They’ve got lights in the trees, lights in the bushes, lights on handmade poles and handmade Christmas trees – all of which are choreographed to songs like We Wish

Right time for James to go: local NDP official Robert Freeman The Progress Chilliwack New Democrats may have “sympathy” for former party leader Carole James, but a change in leadership is the best political strategy for the NDP as the BC Liberals are about to choose a new leader of their own, a local NDP official said. “The only thing I’m sorry for is Carole hung on (to the leadership) for too long,” said Clifford Roulston, head of the NDP constituency association in Chilliwack. He said his personal view is that James was the “best person for the job” when elected seven years ago to lead the party, but “there was always a feeling she was not the right person to become the premier” as other MLAs in the NDP caucus had more political

experience. “Carole was probably good at combating Gordon Campbell (but) it’s time to get someone new in to oppose the leader of the Liberals,” he said. “Everybody had misgivings about Carole being premier.” The conventional political wisdom holds that with the BC Liberals in disarray following Campbell’s resignation, and the lingering hatred of the harmonized sales tax, the NDP’s chances of forming the next government were looking better than ever. Until the party seemed to implode last week as James resigned after an internal fight with ‘The Gang of 13’ dissident MLAs erupted into full public view. But Roulston said he doesn’t see “a major split” in the party. “If there is a division within the party, it is between the provincial

office and the local constituencies. The party policy, introduced by Carole, is not to receive third-party donations,” he said. Which means the labour organizations that had been the financial backbone of the NDP, especially the cash-strapped local constituency associations. Roulston said James was “our Moses,” who led the party out of the political wilderness, but her success - like the third-party donations policy - may have led to her downfall. “I know people who have refused to donate here in Chilliwack while she was the leader,” Roulston said. Chilliwack’s Liberal MLAs are making political hay out of the “turmoil” they see in the NDP, and BC Conservatives are licking their chops at the “golden opportunity” they see as B.C.’s two major politi-

cal parties scramble to choose a leader. Chilliwack-Hope MLA Barry Penner warned of dire consequences to free enterprise in B.C. if the NDP “lurched to the left” following the departure of James, a “moderating” influence on the party. “It’s pretty clear there’s huge turmoil in the NDP, and they may well split into two parties,” Chilliwack MLA John Les said. He said the “tremendous animosity” amongst NDP MLAs in Victoria is visible, and that labour organizations are “intimately involved” in the party’s strife. “The Left is in tatters right now, in terms of organized labour and the NDP itself,” he said. Chilliwack BC Conservative Ben Besler said his party has already gone through its struggles with

Formal process now in place to report city misconduct Jennifer Feinberg The Progress There was “no specific instance” that led to the creation of the city’s new whistle blower policy, according to a union spokesperson. In fact, city workers represented by CUPE Local 458 have been in favour of such a protection policy for some time, said Louise Piper of CUPE 458. It provides a “Now we’ve negotiated one, and it provides safe reporting a safe reporting process process for for public workers to public workers report any wrongdoing to report any they may see, in order to protect residents and wrongdoing taxpayers, without the they may see fear of losing their jobs,” she said. City council approved ~ Louise Piper the new Whistle Blower Protection Policy on rmal process for anyy Dec. 6, mapping out a formal city employee to report serious misconduct. “The City of Chilliwack is committed to maintaining the highest standards of integrity and accountability in its operations,” said Mayor Sharon Gaetz. “This policy makes it clear that employees can assist the city to uphold these values without fear of retaliation or disadvantage.” The policy was jointly developed by city staff and CUPE Local 458 for any incidents related to fraud, waste or abuse of city funds, that are witnessed by employees, protecting them against any form of discrimination or reprisal. “We’re happy to see this policy and we thank the mayor and council for their direction in our community,” said Piper.

Michelle Lemieux runs Bees Knees Christmas Trees in Yarrow where she sells handmade centrepieces and wreaths made from less-than-perfect Christmas trees. JENNA HAUCK/ PROGRESS

The whole idea germinated as Lemieux took over the family business when her brother moved away. They opened a little retail outlet and will be there until Dec. 23 to sell their wares, in a former ice cream shop in Yarrow at the corner of Yarrow Central and No. 3 Road. “It just makes sense to make everything in the operation as

green as possible,” Lemieux says. Although the farm operations are not certified organic, they use organic growing methods and they have been designated Salmon Safe, which means their production practices are not harmful to the watershed or fish habitat. “They set standards that we met right away.” Salmon Safe reps from Oregon conducted a site inspection and gave them the green light. “I think we’re the first

Christmas tree farm in B.C. to be Salmon Safe. “It’s about looking at the ecosystem as a whole, not specifically about that tree, but what can we do better,” she said. “Especially when you’re talking about a crop that’s optional. So we have choice and I’ve been so proud to be able to offer something different.” The Bees Knees trees are at 41909 Yarrow Central Road and No. 3 Rd. in Yarrow, 604220-9927 or www.thebeeskneeschristmastrees.ca.

Every aspect of the Bees Knees Christmas Trees business has been tweaked to make this Christmas as green as possible, says owner Michelle Lemieux. It’s a zero waste philosophy they’ve taken to heart. It starts with the Douglas fir trees and the Grand firs that they’ve grown on two different farms in the Columbia Valley — without any pesticides or fertilizers. “We don’t spray them, we don’t do anything really, but talk to them,” she says. Any trees that don’t make the grade for family Christmas trees, are turned into fragrant wreaths and festive table centrepieces made with recycled glass wear. What might have been seen as a loss by others, was turned into something else, by trimming the fir branches down and re-purposing them at Bees Knees. The feedback to date has been quite positive. “There are a lot of young moms who don’t want a tree with a lot of pesticides,” Lemieux says. She also has trees stands, and organic beeswax candles on display at the store. She added some leather bracelets, hand-knit purses, and cards with wild-flower seeds embedded in them.

dissidents, and although it’s still leaderless, it has managed to “pull together a party that people could relate to and get behind.” “I think we have a chance to come through the middle,” he said, picking up small-c conservatives leaving the BC Liberals, and providing a political home for those who can’t see themselves voting NDP. Wayne McGrath, BC Conservative Party president, said the “disarray” in the rival political parties “provides a golden opportunity for a third party, namely a conservative party, to gain some traction.” He said the BC Conservatives now have time to build membership, set policy, and choose a new leader, probably in the Spring of next year.

The Lions Den “We Serve”

Presented by Mt. Cheam Lions Club

Do you remember your childhood Christmases? For most of us they are happy memories - memories of family dinners, church services, carolling, opening gifts, visiting family and friends and, yes, even Santa Claus. These are, in most cases, happy memories. Unfortunately there are children today that will not have these memories due to circumstances that are beyond their control. These children and their families will have sad memories instead. That is why organizations such the Lions club exist. We are not able to help all these people in need but we feel we do make a difference. We work throughout the year to help those in need and at Christmas it is a rewarding feeling to know that some children will have a better Christmas and in fact a better life because there are volunteers who care. We hope to continue to help those in need - you can too. In the new year think about becoming a Lion. It not only means one more person to help the needy, it is a rewarding feeling to be the person who made a difference to even one person. Also there is a great camaraderie among the members themselves. Think about it as you enjoy your Christmas dinners and festivities, than if you feel you may be interested you can contact me or any Mount Cheam lion member for more details. There is no obligation or pressure if you inquire. In fact we will give you the information you need and even have you attend a Lions meeting before you make your ¿nal decision. Think about it. Now, on behalf of myself and all of the Mount Cheam Lion members I want take this time to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and the best in the New Year. Watch for our turkey draw going on now till Christmas in the Chilliwack Mall. “We Serve” MERRY Club News brought to you by: CHRISTMAS Johns Electronics Ltd. — Lion Jerry McEvoy 604-847-9977

controllers, gutted flood lights and rewired them too. He built triangle Christmas trees out of scrap wood and light poles from metal electrical conduits. He auditioned songs, broke each of them down into 25 millisecond increments to attach the lights to, and created the concert online before even tacking up a single light. Hundreds of spare hours went into the project, researching, building, creating. He took time off work for it, travelled for it, even snuck away the night before his wedding to assemble another floodlight for it – much to the dismay of his then fiance. But when Gary presented Ashala with her own private viewing a few weeks ago, all was forgiven. There, seeing the culmination of her husband’s year of hard work, listening to the music blare from Gary’s 95.7 FM station and watching the lights dance to the music, the pride in her heart swelled. It was worth it. But he’s not done. Even though Gary officially premiered the sixsong concert to the neighbourhood two weeks ago with great amounts of accolades from the approximate 30 people who attended, he’s still tweaking the ensemble. He’s also looking ahead to next year with plans of adding more lights, a star and leaping arches. “Most people wouldn’t dream of doing something like this,” he said. “It’s a lot of work, but it was really worthwhile.” Gary succeeded in the challenge. Ashala got her lights.

The search for a missing 88-year-old Chilliwack woman ended tragically just before noon Monday. “Due to the sensitive nature of this incident, and the family’s wish for privacy, no further information will be provided,” RCMP Cpl. Lea-Anne Dunlop said. Police had earlier issued a news release asking for public help finding the woman, who was reported missing at about 3:40 a.m. from her home on Amber Way in Chilliwack. A night-long search was mounted that included police officers, a search and rescue team, and a helicopter. How and where the woman was found was not disclosed by police.

Political twists and turns

The Chilliwack

Progress

R AESIDE

For most of the past nine years, B.C. politics has been going against the grain. It’s been dull, predictable and very stable. The past year has been anything but. While it started off on a high note, with the tremendous success of the 2010 Winter Olympics, since that time it has been an unbelievable roller coaster ride. Even those who closely followed the politics of the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s were amazed by the twists and turns. It all goes back to July 23, 2009, when a press release announced that the BC Liberal government was bringing in the HST. This announcement came two months after an election in which the HST was not mentioned. The flip-flop was one thing, but then the Liberals proceeded to leave the issue alone for months. Whether the party was fixated on the Olympics, or just too arrogant to care, didn’t matter. People grew more and more upset, and this left former premier Bill Vander Zalm and his fellow anti-HST organizers with a perfect opening. They came up with an initiative proposal that, against all odds, succeeded. This meant that a vote of some sort had to be held on the HST, and doomed Premier Gordon Campbell. He tried to find ways to stay, but couldn’t. When he said he would step aside, that put the squeeze on NDP leader Carole James, whose personal popularity trails that of her party. Now she has stepped down as well. So B.C. voters are faced with what may be a unique moment in Canadian political history. The two major provincial parties are conducting leadership races at the same time. No candidate for either post can be sure who they will be facing, and no one inside or outside either party knows what policy decisions their party will adopt in the next few years. While some may suggest that leaves B.C. in a leadership vacuum, it’s a temporary one. The Liberals (and the government) will have a new leader by March, and we should then get some idea which way the party is heading. After the referendum on the HST, which may be moved up to June, that direction will become more obvious. The NDP, meanwhile, have to not only hold a leadership race, but also have to pay the bills from the last election and heal some very nasty self-inflicted wounds. Black Press

Small steps forward as world talks climate change A little progress is better than none at all and the UN Climate Change talks in Cancun, Mexico, last week at least came to the basics of a deal to curb global warming and set up a fund to help developing nations rein in their own emissions. Given that last year’s climate conference in Copenhagen was such a disaster with mistrust, misdirection and a missed opportunity to find common ground for agreement, delegates from 194 nations approached the Cancun huddle with no small degree of doubt that things could get done. So they made a savvy move to achieve progress in select areas rather than a sweeping deal to extend or replace the thorny Kyoto Accord. In the end they adopted a balanced package of decisions that set all the governments more firmly on a path toward a low-emissions

future and support enhanced action on climate change in the developing world. The package, dubbed the Cancun Agreements, received prolonged applause as UN Framework Convention on Climate Change E x e c u t i v e S e c r e t a r y C h r i s t i a n a Figueres said, ‘Nations have shown they can work together under a common Margaret roof to reach conEVANS sensus on a common cause. They have shown that consensus in a transparent and inclusive process can create opportunity for all.” That sense of cooperation is long overdue. According to data from NASA and the U.K.’s Hadley Centre, the last decade was the hottest on record and this year

is heading to be the hottest, or second hottest, on record globally. Until now 1998 has held that spot. The agreement, endorsed by all countries, recognized that “climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our time and that deep cuts in global greenhouse gas emissions are required according to science” to meet the goal of holding the increase in global temperatures below 2C, measured against pre-industrial times. This is all going to be done through building blocks. The Cancun Agreements are really incremental steps that address not only reduction in emissions but financial aid to developing nations, technology transfer and incentives to leave trees standing. The agreements included such deals as industrial countries developing low-carbon plans and strategies and assess how best to meet

them. A registry is to be set up to record and match each developing country’s mitigation actions with finance and technology support from industrialized countries. Then there’s the $100 billion finance plan. Initially $30 billion in fast start finance funds will come from industrial countries to support climate action in the developing world up to 2012. The intent is to raise $100 billion by 2020. An initiative highlight is that governments agreed to boost action to curb emissions from deforestation and forest degradation by providing incentives to reduce logging. In a speech last Thursday, Environment Minister John Baird pushed the point that any agreement on emissions targets must include all nations, even emerging nations not currently tagged to the Kyoto Accord. And he certainly targeted China and India although he added that tiny nations like

Grenada and Tuvalu should be given a break. Of the 193 countries that have signed on to Kyoto since 1997, less than one fifth (all industrial countries) are legally bound to meet the emissions limitations. The rest, including China, do not have to start their emissions cuts until 2012. “You can’t reduce global emissions with only 37 countries out of 193,” Baird told reporters. There were, needless to say, grumps and disagreements with Bolivia holding out the hardest and complaining that the deal wouldn’t halt climate change. Luckily they didn’t have veto power. The Cancun deal is a one step at a time process. Australian Climate Change Minister Greg Combet considered it an historic step forward. Hope so.

Opera welcomed in Chilliwack Chilliwack experienced its first live opera performance and only slightly abridged, on a recent Sunday afternoon. The performance of “La Bohème” was given in Italian, by students of the Opera School at U.B.C. The singers were wonderful, giving a fine rendering in music and action of the vie de Bohème of mid 19th century Paris, as imagined by Puccini. They displayed astonishing skill and confidence for such young artists; one of the female leads was a local young woman. Though the afternoon lacked an orchestra, the piano accompaniment was of such verve, colour and brilliance that I scarcely missed the orchestra, once we entered the world of privation inhabited by the main characters. With very simple settings and props, the story was told satisfyingly, to present the audience with the “synthesis of word, action and music” that Puccini achieved in his operas, to quote Sir Thomas Beecham. The amazingly beautiful lines of love, regret, sorrow, laughter and the exquisite musical description

of the squalor in which such characters did live and of the symptoms of the “ white plague “ (T.B.) from which Mimi suffers, were as gorgeous and affecting as ever. I have seldom felt the contrast of character between the two pairs of lovers in the scene outside the tavern, so sharply, though the snow was not falling nor did we see the cross section of freezing lower class French life seeking at dawn, admission to Paris from the freezing customs officers; this serves to reinforce the difficulty of these lives. The four main male characters were young ,jovial, empathetic and generous in spite of everything and where else would you hear a wonderful song of farewell, from the basso, to the old winter coat that he is about to sell to help the dying girl. “La Bohème” has social relevance today; it is a drama of youth, sickness, hunger, underemployment, poor wages and privation of all sorts, above all of cold. The story occurs just before the Industrial Revolution in

France, when God was still of a mind that the poor should be poor and the rich should be rich, now “market forces” and or that unwise, runaway beast, “The Economy” decree the same ; the parallels with our present society are sharp. Today these young artists, musicians and intellectuals living in B.C. would/could/might be suffering from the recent cuts by the Liberal government to the arts grants. In every fashion this was a great afternoon, musically and philosophically. I thank the Fraser Valley Philharmonic Society for bringing this performance to Chilliwack and hope we will have more live opera in this town. Also thanks and good wishes to the talented young singers and Mr. Epp, the accompanist. I hope we will hear you all again! I encourage people not familiar with opera to attend; you might find that the irrelevances and elitism so often attributed to this art form are not strictly true.

Egg-take time for salmon hatchery

Austin Julius (right) and Melvin Malloway (left) remove eggs from a coho salmon as Harold Archie supervises at the Skowkale Hatchery. JENNA HAUCK/ PROGRESS

Jennifer Feinberg The Progress The annual “egg-take got underway once

again at the Skowkale Hatchery this month. The facility works in cooperation with the Chilliwack Lake

Hatcher y, and last week they were busy extracting 40,000 to 50,000 eggs for coho salmon enhancement purposes. They were working with 10 male and 10 female salmon, and volunteers included students from Sto:lo Alternate and the Education Centre. “The last couple of years we’ve been really lucky to have volunteers helping out, and it’s good training to see what happens with salmon in the wild, said Harold Archie, manager of the Skowkale Hatchery on Chilliwack River Road. The students have been assisting with the egg-takes and juvenile releases, as well as maintenance efforts at the revitalized hatcher y building on the Skowkale reserve. Some of the coho released from the Skowkale Hatchery a couple of years ago are starting to return to their natal stream in

Chilliwack Creek. “We’re getting good returns in the stream this year, said Archie. The numbers are bigger this year, with 17 coho making waves in the little waterway beside the hatchery. “They’re starting to lay eggs. You can see the tops of their fins in the water.

Chilliwack River Valley firefighters kept a mobile home fire from spreading to nearby houses last Thursday. Firefighters were called to the site in the 50000-block O’Byrne Road just after 9 p.m. Heavy smoke and flames were coming through the roof of the mobile home as firefighters arrived. After eyewitnesses confirmed occupants were safely out of the mobile home, firefighters began battling the blaze and kept it from spreading to nearby homes. Two nearby vehicles were not so lucky, suffering heavy damages. The cause of the fire is not known, but it is not considered suspi-

Local NDP sees ‘swing to the left’

r o f r Hea as! m t s i r Ch

NDP from p3 Roulston disagreed with the “Left is in tatters assessment by Les, and Penner’s warning about NDP economics.

www. CHILLIWACK chilliwackford .com 30309

“I think what’s happening now is Liberal economics has been disproved, he said. “Since the economic collapse we suffered a couple of years ago ... how can we come out of this recession based on consumer spending when the consumer has already maxed out his credit card, can’t afford a home, can’t feed children

because of poverty? And the HST has shifted even more of the tax burden onto consumers, he added. “I think there is, generally speaking, a swing back to the Left, he said, in reaction to the Liberals’ right-wing economic policies. “I think we’re starting to develop a social conscience, he said.

School goes back to the future A time capsule buried 25 years ago is opened Katie Bartel The Progress

Central elementary Grade 5 teacher Suzanne Bartel and Grade 6 teacher Christopher Lister have started a living library, where community members tell their stories to the classes. The stories are recorded and uploaded to the web where students can repeatedly check them out. Living library was designed to improve oral language skills in students. JENNA HAUCK/ PROGRESS

Giving life to storytelling Katie Bartel The Progress Everyone has a story to tell. An adventurous dream, a trip with mom to the market, milking the family cow – all stories. A chemistry lab gone awry, a battle with a chronic disease, an afternoon baking cookies – all stories. A frolic with friends, a triumphant game of hide-and-seek, a girls-only slumber party – all stories. And Central elementary is turning those stories into a living library. Since the start of the school year, Grade 5 teacher Suzanne Bartel and Grade 6 teacher Christopher Lister have been inviting members of the community into their classrooms to tell their stories. Sharon Gaetz spoke about the loss of her daughter. Angus Haggerty spoke about being a child in the middle of the second world war. Patty Tyson spoke about being a proud Canadian in a foreign country. Each story is recorded and uploaded to the school’s living library website where students can repeatedly “check them out.” Essentially, the people are becoming the books. “Everyone has a story to tell,” said Bartel. “We want our students to understand that.” Oral storytelling has been practiced for centuries. For many cultures, it’s how traditions and beliefs and family tales are passed on through generations. But with modern-day advances, like TV and the Internet, oral story-

telling is fast fading into the background. Central elementary, however, is bringing back the art of storytelling. And by doing so, they’re improving their students’ oral language skills. “It’s really hard to assess and practice oral language in the classroom,” said Lister. “The living library was designed to improve oral language in our students.” Sitting in the Grade 5 classroom while “Auntie” Yvonne Sandau told her story of going from being a big city girl to a small-town farm girl, the kids didn’t make a peep, not one. They stared intently, some had their heads propped up into their hands, others craned their ears closer for better listening capabilities. And with Auntie Yvonne’s story having shades of Anne of Green Gables and Robert Munsch in them, they giggled at all the right spots and dropped their jaws and let their eyes grow wide in all the right spots too. At story’s end, nearly every hand in the room went up. “You get so into the stories, it’s like woh,” said Grade 6 student Kayla Bradshaw. “You don’t want them to end,” said Grade 5 student Whitney Foster. “After the first one, you want to hear another one. “It kind of makes me think, how would I tell that story if it happened to me?” Which is exactly what Bartel and Lister had intended. Central elementary is an inner-city school where more than 70 per cent of its students start kindergarten at risk for language develop-

ment. As such, the teachers often teach outside the box in order to reach all their students. The Living Library is one such example. “The kids who struggle with reading, are really thriving here,” said Bartel. They’re learning what makes a story stronger by witnessing the local storytellers’ hand gestures, facial expressions, voice intonations. They’re learning about different topics and genres, that there’s a whole range of stories out there from something as simple as a wild dream to something as heart-wrenching as the loss of a child. They’re finding personal connections to the stories. They’re asking thoughtful questions. “They’re developing skills that we want them to use when they’re reading,” said Lister. “Listening, reading, writing skills – they’re all transferable.” Another aspect of the living library is the online component. Students are required to post comments after each story on the living library website as part of the reflection process. In an era where kids everywhere are tuning into the Internet, Bartel and Lister believe this is just another tool to engage their students. “It’s brought the engagement level up 100 per cent,” said Lister. By the end of the school year each student will have also told a story, which will be posted on the website with all the other living books. Anyone interested in sharing their story can contact the teachers at livinglibrary33@gmail. com. kbartel@theprogress.com

Rewind. The year is 1985. It’s Sardis elementary’s 100th anniversary. Jodi Kalernick, a Grade 6 student at Sardis elementary, is writing to the future – 25 years into the future. Like Hi Bud, she wrote. This gnarly (sic) year’s style was like bright colours (sic) called neon ... and if you looked at everyone’s hair like totally all you would see is like ... pink, blue, yellow, and even far out green ... Like you should have been here. It was total charisma (sic). Fast forward. Sardis elementary recently dug up a time capsule that was buried in the front garden by students of the school 25 years ago. “There’s history here, a lot of history,” said school principal Taryn Dixon. “It’s an opportunity for our students to gain an understanding of where Sardis was and how much has changed over the years.” Inside the thick plastic time capsule, there were pictures of kids in short shorts, oversized tops, stretchy stirrup pants, slouchy socks, high tops, and yes, as little Jodi mentioned, neon, lots and lots of neon. There were pictures from the school’s 100th anniversary, a commemorative t-shirt, student assignments, workbooks, grading sheets, and a box of slides. “When I showed the slides, the kids didn’t know what they were,” said Dixon. “But of course there were slides in there, because that’s what they used.” The time capsule was an extension of another time capsule the school had buried several years before. And so there were pictures from as far back as 1898 when Sardis was just a one-room school, and class pictures, one of which had 42 students to one teacher, and several black and white photos of May Day celebrations from the 40s and 50s, a tradition that has long since faded away at Sardis elementary. Also included was a list of health rules that advised students not to put pins, fingers, pencils or anything except “food or drink” into their mouths; to breathe only fresh air; and to breathe, sit, stand and walk correctly, because “in doing so, you will do more to prevent consumption than all the physicians combined,” it said. It’s more than coffee at Coffee Plus that have become such a hit. On a gloomy, wet afternoon, nothing warms the soul better than a bowl of hot soup, Yap says. But don’t arrive too late, he adds. Once they’re gone, they’re gone until a fresh batch is made the next day. The soups are not the only thing homemade. Sandwiches, too, have Sandi’s expert touch. For example, the turkey doesn’t come from a package. It’s freshly roasted and then sliced. Scones and deserts are also made fresh. As for the coffee, that certainly hasn’t been neglected. Coffee Plus offers a choice of organic and fair trade blends, as well as the rich and deeper flavours of more traditional varieties. The decor is clean and comfortable, Yap says. When the space was remodeled, the emphasis was on new. And that combination is

The day starts early at Coffee Plus. Long before most of us have had our first cup of Morning Joe, Sandi Lange is working on the “Plus” side of Coffee Plus. Although fine, rich and roasted coffee is an integral part of the downtown café, it’s not the only part, says owner Melvin Yap. The Yale Road business sprang from humble beginnings. It was originally opened a few months ago to serve people working in the same building. “We wanted a nice place for people to go and relax and have a coffee,” says Yap. But since then, its reputation has grown. It’s become a favourite place for people to stop by for a quick lunch or comforting snack. Sandi’s day starts at around 5:30 a.m. She’s preparing ingredients for the homemade soups

The art of hair design at Inkspell

Jocelyn Wilson always had an artistic flare. The challenge, as many artists discover, is finding a way to earn a living and provide for your family from the proceeds of your work. For Jocelyn, the solution was to diversify. Several years back she decided to turn her talent for visual artistry to hair

design. “I thought it would be a good extension of my art,” she says. Hair design, she says, is often like sculpting. Complemented by her eye for colour, symmetry and style, the combination was a successful mix that soon earned her a loyal clientele. Her success was spread mostly by the

recommendations of others. “I’ve always felt that my work is my best advertising.” Unfortunately illness prevented her from continuing. And at one point she was even uncertain if she would ever be able to be a hair stylist again. However, she looked to her creative roots for inspiration and decided to add tattoo artistry to her repertoire. When Jocelyn learned she would be able to continue working as a hair stylist, she decided to keep the tattoo service. And thus was born Inkspell Tattoo and Hair Design. Located just off Kipp and Main Street, the business has only been open a few weeks. But already the word is spreading. “It’s really going well,” she says. The combination of hair and tattoo styling is a reflection of the changing perception of tattoos. “They’ve become more mainstream,” Jocelyn says. Nonetheless, clients who might consider getting a tattoo may still feel uncertain about walking into a more conventional tattoo parlour. Inkspell will help bridge that

Community Carollers head to the hospital tonight Jennifer Feinberg The Progress It started out with just a few volunteers who were asked if they’d like to sing Christmas carols for patients at Chilliwack General Hospital, to help make their season a little brighter. Then the idea mushroomed from there, said Mayor Sharon Gaetz. So far about 40 people will be meeting at the hospital tonight at 7 p.m. to sing some Christmas tunes. City staff will be joined by local high school students and teachers, some grocery store employees, an elf, an RCMP officer in red serge and a prison guard. PriceSmart stepped forward with an offer to make up 250 goodie bags for the CGH in-patients. “All I asked was that they donate an orange each that we could give out,” she said. “But I was told, ‘We’ll do better than that.’” It’s shaping up to be a good turnout. “We never expected to get this kind of interest,” Gaetz said. “Now everybody wants to go.” They’re meeting at the hospital entrance at 7 p.m. on Dec. 14 for anyone who wants to join them.

Soldiers raise funds for kids They’re at the mercy of the elements, and they’re doing it for BC Children’s Hospital Foundation. Two members of ASU Chilliwack, Sgt. Erasmo Gavini and Master-Cpl. Jason Doiron will be living atop a scaffolding platform that’s eight metres in the air all this week.

Babies of 2010

They’re almost halfway to their $3,000 goal, attempting the seven-day survival challenge. They have no shelter, minimal rations and supplies and are exposed to the weather. But “nothing compares to the challenges” faced by kids at the hospital day to day. They invite the public to come say hello and offer a donation. They’re at 5535 Korea Road near Tyson. Bruins rolling on Alberta road trip Eric J. Welsh, The Progress Here’s something Marc Habscheid may wish to consider at the next Western Hockey League scheduling meetings. Chilliwack’s head coach/general manager may wish to pitch a 36 game road schedule, with all games in Alberta against teams from the Central division. Outside the box thinking for sure, but given recent history, it seems like the sensible thing to do. Consider the numbers. Since entering the league in 2006-07, the good guys have a winning record against four of the six Central division teams; Red Deer, Calgar y, Edmonton and Lethbridge. It is the only division Chilliwack has posted a winning record against, with a cummulative all-time mark of 23-17-2-4. Weekend road wins over Lethbridge (4-3 on Friday) and Medicine Hat (4-1 on Saturday) make the case look even stronger, and if Habscheid could somehow pull this off, we could all start planning the Memorial Cup parade route. “We’ve still got a ways to go on this trip, but we’re certainly glad we started off

this way,” Habscheid offered when asked about the idea of an allCentral road schedule. Fair enough. The Central teams would certainly shoot it down anyways, not wanting to see any more of the Bruins than is absolutely necessary. Take the Tigers. Always one of the league’s top teams, Medicine Hat is extremely tough to topple at home. And yet the Bruins made it look easy Saturday night, playing a lethally efficient road game. “It was probably our best game the year in terms of attention to detail,” Habscheid noted. “It was a very cohesive game and the guys were really engaged. They played hard and structured and they were full marks for the win.” Scoreless through 20 minutes, Kevin Sunder got the Bruins on the board early in period two with a shorthanded tally. The 18-year-old wired a shot over the glove of Tiger keeper Tyler Bunz with such velocity that it ripped right through the mesh. The unusual circumstances required a second look by game officials, but video review eventually confirmed Sundher’s 10th of the

PUCK PREVIEW

HEAD-TO-HEAD The Bruins are 5-4-0-0 alltime against the Rebels, with a record of 2-2-0-0 within the unfriendly confines of the Enmax Centrium.

LAST MEETING The Bruins dug themselves a three goal hole and ended up losing 4-3 back on Nov. 12. The Rebels built their lead on first period goals by Mathew Dumba, Tyson Ness and Ferguson. A pair of Brandon Manning goals cut the gap to 3-2, but Turner Elson provided the eventual game winner in period two.

year. Curt Gogol doubled the Chilliwack lead at 11:12, showing off some rarely seen dangling skills. The 19-year-old forward, more known for scrapping than sniping, picked the pocket of a Medicine Hat defender, and notched his third of the year on a top-shelf backhand over the shoulder of Bunz. Sundher made it 3-0 at 12:31, converting a two-on-one feed from Forsyth for his second of the game. Emerson Etem got the lone Medicine Hat goal late in the middle frame, but the Bruins

locked things down in the third. Robin Soudek wrapped up the scoring, notching his 11th of the year with 6:45 remaining. “It was especially good to see, considering two of our best players didn’t play,” Habscheid added. “It gave other guys to the opportunity to step up, and they did.” Ryan Howse missed the game as he attends the Canadian National Junior Team selection camp in Toronto, and captain Brandon Manning missed his second straight with a groin injury.

Among those stepping up were the goaltenders. Lucas Gore turned in a 35 save effort in the Friday win over Lethbridge, and Braden Gamble was the first star in the win over Medicine Hat. Good stuff from two guys who’ve had their issues. “It was good on both ends,” Habscheid agreed. “You anchor is always your goaltending and that’s what we need from them.” The road trip continues tonight in Calgary as the Bruins take on the suddenly sad-sack Hitmen.

The perennial power house and defending league champ has hit hard times this year, sitting dead last in the league with a record of 9-21-2-0. Continuing with the overall theme, Chilliwack has had good success in the Saddledome, winning three of five in the home of the NHL’s Calgary Flames. The trip continues tomorrow with a game against a tough Red Deer squad (20-9-1-3), led by potential first overall NHL draft pick Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. The five game trek wraps up Saturday in Edmonton.

Lunachicks outlast Langley The Chilliwack Lunachicks edged the Fort Langley Islanders 3-2 on Sunday in classic women’s division soccer action. Playing with a shorthanded roster of 10, the Lunachicks persevered

and opened the scoring at the 13 minute mark. Janelle Cavanaugh pulled the trigger on a feed from Andrea Feaver, then returned the favour 12 minutes later, setting up Feaver to put Chilliwack up

2-0. A pair of Fort Langley goals in the final five minutes sent the teams to half-time knotted at 2-2. Eleven minutes into the second half, Trudy Hall picked the pocket

of an Islanders midfielder and fed the ball through tow Feaver. She buried her shot for the game winner. Launa Perry had an outstanding game on defence, as did Leigh Roberton in goal.

G.W. Graham’s boy’s and girl’s basketball teams opened their regular seasons with wins last week. The girls bounced the Hope Mustangs 68-30, led by star rookies Kaitlyn McDonald and Aveen Rezends. The boys also handled Hope 106-58, with Lucas Mannes leading the attack and 14 players seeing floor-time.

OMMUNITY SPORTS REVIEW

Storm set sights on basketball’s best 2010-11 SENIOR BOYS HIGH SCHOOL

BASKETBALL PREVIEW The stor y at Chilliwack secondary school is raised expectations. Coach Joe Mauro believes his Storm squad has the size and talent to be a major player in the AAA Abbotsford East division. “We’re a very talented team up front with decent size compared to past years,” he said. “We don’t have anyone who’s six-foot-four, but we have some big kids who will give us an advantage in the paint because they’re big, they’re strong and they can jump.” Mauro can throw out a front line of Erik

Neels, Gary McCrea and Kyle Rollheiser and feel good about it, and Zach Flemming is more than capable coming off the bench. Matt McConnell has the size (six-foot-three) and ability to play up front, but he’s more likely to be used at guard. Mauro raves about his passing ability, calling him the best on the team. “We’re looking for mismatches, and he has the mobility to play outside and win matchups against smaller players,” Mauro noted. “He struggled at that position last year, but he’s

REVIEW

worked hard at it and I hope he’ll be OK.” Mauro wants his team to be dangerous from the outside, but that is where his biggest question marks are. The status of veteran Kyle Lorteau is uncertain due to health concerns, but he has tremendous upside if available. Darian Williams and Kyle Hamilton are also good options. “If we can get the ball up the floor without any problems, we will be a good team,” Mauro said. “If they come through the way I think they can, I think we can be really good.”

Grizzlies get close to ultimate goal The story at G.W. Graham is experience. Fresh off an apperance at last season’s AA provincials, Grizzly coach Jake Mouritzen oversees an older and wiser squad that enters this year ranked 10th in the province. Mouritzen is carrying a large roster (16), with most of them in Grades 10 and 11 and all capable players. “We would have to be the most experienced young team out there, because 11 of those

guys went to provincials last year,” he explained. The guard positions are in the capable hands of Lucas Mannes and Fran Armengual with a front line of Geoffrey Slovick (shooting/ small forward), Josiah Cockrill (power forward) and Hank Derksen (center). The team has tons of depth and interchangeable parts, with names like Austin Neetz, Cody Hansen and Ryan Tempel leading the charge off the bench.

“We feel the bench is deep right down to our 16th guy,” Mouritzen said. “We feel really good about the depth we have.” The Grizzlies arrived as a force last year, and there seems no reason to believe they can’t continue their upward trajectory. “I think we’re on a two-year plan right now,” Mouritzen said. “Our goal is to get back to provincials this year, and probably win it next year.”

Falcons fly with fast-paced attack The story at Sardis secondary school is stability. This time last year, new coach Kyle Graves was installing his systems and trying to get up to speed on the fly with a group of guys he barely knew. This year, he knows who he’ll go to war with, and they know what’s expected of them. That alone gives the Falcons a head start. “We’re way ahead of the curve compared to last year,” Graves said. “And I think we have

the talent to do some damage.” Michael Covey will be the go-to guy at Sardis, expected to score upwards of 20 points per game. Secondary scoring could be a concern, although the Falcon roster is loaded with shooters. “I think we’ll do it by committee, but at least all five starters are capable of shooting three balls,” Graves said. James Rendal has looked good in practice and pre-season action,

and could be a good Plan B behind Covey. Logan Rogers, Max Chadsey and Colin Currie are the other expected starters and they will have a ton of fun playing the run-andgun style that Graves favours. “We’ll play Phoenix Suns style basketball, except hopefully with a bit more attention to defence,” Graves said. “We’ll push the ball up as fast as we can, get a lot of fast break points and hopefully hit a lot from the outside.”

Kyle Rollheiser defends teammate Gary McCrea during a Chilliwack secondary school basketball practice. The Storm have high expectations coming into the season. JENNA HAUCK/ PROGRESS

THIESSEN Mary

1929 - 2010 Mary (Froese) Thiessen passed away December 5, 2010 at age 90. She was born to Abram Fro- THIESSEN ese and Katherine Janzen. In 1926, the family emigrated from Orenburg, Russia to Canada and settled near Tofield, Alberta. In 1946, she married Nick Thiessen. They farmed and started their family in Vauxhaul, Alberta. In 1955, the lure of homestead land in the Peace River Country brought them to DeBolt, Alberta, where they raised five children and cared for foster children. Mary had a passion for vegetable and flower gardening, the produce and beauty of which she willingly shared. She graciously accepted the total strangers that Nick often brought home for dinner. She had a strong and practical faith, demonstrated by numerous acts of kindness and generosity. Her earthy wisdom, unassuming nature and loyalty to family and friends, provided a quiet stability for those around her. In 1994, Mary and Nick moved to Chilliwack, BC where they enjoyed the fellowship of neighbours and friends at the Greendale MB Church. In 2007 they moved to Abbotsford. She spent many hours making quilts, sewing for MCC and enjoying time with family and friends. She dearly missed Nick after he passed away April 24th, 2010. Mary is lovingly remembered by her children; Stephen (Vange), Victor (Judy), Violet (Rick) Chappell, Janice (Owen Kavanagh), Edward (Anne) Thiessen; thirteen grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three brothers and two sisters. A memorial service will be held at the Greendale MB Church, 6550 Sumas Prairie Rd., Chilliwack, BC on Saturday, December 18th, at 1 pm. Donations to MCC gratefully accepted.
