Charities ratify bingo deal

■ A RT O F T HE C ARVER

Jennifer Feinberg The Progress Chilliwack Bingo Association charities voted in favour of the deal presented to them by Great Canadian Gaming Corporation over the weekend. The resolution by the 49 members ratified the sale of the existing bingo operation, as well as the five-acre site on Olds Drive to Great Canadian Gaming, confirmed Fran Heagy, manager of Chilliwack Bingo. “The CBA will receive a substantial immediate consideration in addition to contingent trailing payments over the next 20 years,” Heagy said. Millions of dollars from local bingo profits have funded non-profit groups over the past 25 years. “This sale will ensure the sustainability of this funding well into the future,” said Heagy. The vote by CBA members took place Saturday in Chilliwack. “We made a presentation to the charities that run Chilliwack Bingo,” confirmed Great Canadian vice-president Howard Blank. “We thought it went very well. There was solid information and we had some good dialogue. That’s all I can say at this point.” More details may be made public about the acquisition on Thursday, when Great Canadian’s quarter results are set to be announced, said Blank. Asked if Great Canadian had any other experience with a charity-owned gaming organization like Chilliwack Bingo, Blank replied that the Maple Ridge facility that is under development had a similar history. Chilliwack Bingo logged the highest bingo revenues in the province, with an $11.1 million total in 2009-10, while Vancouver’s Planet Bingo came in second. City council approved the expansion of Chilliwack Bingo in 2009 into a community gaming centre with slot machines. Continued: BINGO/ p4

complaints residents made to police. Their reports about breakins made the area a “hot spot” under the RCMP’s new crime reduction strategy, which ultimately drew the attention of a special RCMP investigations unit to a rental property that had become a “rats’ nest” of criminal activity. “You guys calling us led us back to the property,” RCMP Cpl. Kurtis Bosnell told about 60 residents who attended the meeting at the Ryder Lake

The Progress The tightly-knit community of Ryder Lake got even tighter Thursday night with residents agreeing to form neighbourhood watch groups to protect each other from the criminals targeting the remote rural area east of Chilliwack. But three suspects in a rash of break-ins around Ryder Lake had already been arrested before the meeting took place, partly as a result of the

Two of the suspects, Mark Perkins and Kimberley Gribbon, both 38, had both been released earlier by the courts, but had fallen back into the criminal lifestyle. A third suspect, Rodney Unger, 51, was arrested separately on drug- and firearm-related charges. Bosnell, leader of the crime

reduction unit in Ryder Lake, said a Chilliwack city bylaw prevents grow-op properties from being occupied again for a certain period of time, and imposes fines on “uncooperative” landlords who don’t regularly inspect and report criminal activity at their rental premises. But many residents at the meeting were clearly frustrated by the legal protection afforded those who burglarize their homes, and by their treatment by the courts once found guilty. ‘It’s your decision’, says panel looking into HST ‘Tele-town hall’ meeting on HST tonight Robert Freeman The Progress Like most things to do with the HST, an independent panel’s report released last week on the harmonized sales tax depends on your point of view. Chilliwack MLA John Les, an HST proponent, called the panel’s report “very balanced” and “very fair.” “I would encourage people to read this report,” he said. “It’s not a sales job, it’s an honest evaluation.” But Chilliwack resident Ben Besler, an active member of the

anti-HST movement, was also “very happy with the findings,” which showed the HST is not revenue neutral - making it a “tax grab” in his eyes - and hikes the tax bill of each B.C. family by an average $350. “It’s the worst possible model of the HST they could give us,” he said, in part because B.C. does not have control over regulation of the tax, like Quebec. “We’re not in control of the administration of the tax, it’s handed over to the feds,” he said. But the report goes on to say the HST will lead to a $2.5 billion

growth in the provincial economy by 2020, or about $830 per family. “The HST taxes the growing part of our economy - services - and will provide extra revenue to fund hospitals, schools, roads and other important services you rely on,” the report states. Going back to the PST/GST system will put a $531-million hole in the provincial budget “in the first year alone,” the report continues, as $1.6 billion in transition money must be refunded to the federal government. “It’s not a simple choice before you,” the panel members said. “It’s your decision.” A province-wide referendum on going back to the PST/GST

system is now scheduled for June 24. Fraser Valley residents will have the chance to talk to B.C. government ministers about the HST during a “teletown hall” starting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 10. Ever yone with a publicly listed John number will get a LES call, and a recorded message will ask if you want to take part in the discussion, and provide further details on how to put questions to the ministers. The independent panel’s

report is available online at www. hstinbc.ca Les agreed the government’s early estimates of a revenue-neutral tax, and the number of jobs created were overly optimistic, but returning to the PST/GST system will benefit small businesses. It’s also a “progressive” tax that affects those who spend more, and there is a rebate program for low-income wage earners. Besler said he personally would rather pay back the money owed the federal government than be paying increased taxes “forever.” He also said “political pressure” could be applied to the Conser vative to reduce the amount of the payback.

Quesnel Millionaires’ owners get offer to move team to Chilliwack Percy Hebert Black Press Owners of the Quesnel Millionaires have received an offer from Moray Keith and Jim Bond to purchase the franchise and relocate the BCHL team to Chilliwack. The Mills owners group decided unanimously to accept the offer at a meeting May 7, a meeting, team president and co-owner Bob Sales said, that was not without emotion. “We were all pretty sad about it,” Sales said. The offer from Chiefs Development Group is subject to approval by the British Columbia Hockey League board of governors who will examine the business plan put forth by CDG. Should the BCHL governors not approve the sale and relocation of the Mills to Chilliwack, Sales said the current group of owners would voluntarily withdraw the Mills from the BCHL. Adding to the difficulty of the decision for the owners, was the commitment they received from volunteers and corporate sponsors. “That is our biggest disappointment,” Sales said. “We know how hard they worked. “Mills hockey was their life.” The Mills owners were hoping to find a new set of owners willing to keep the Millionaires in Quesnel, but it wasn’t an easy sell, Sales admitted, with potential owners remarking on the state of Quesnel’s arena and the less than enthusiastic fan.

The Progress A “high-risk” female sex offender who targets children and teenagers has taken up residence in Chilliwack, RCMP officials reported Friday. Audrey Elizabeth Jean Black, 35, was released Friday under “strict conditions,” said RCMP Sgt. Kevin Gibson, and he urged anyone who sees her breaking those conditions to call the police immediately. Black was serving a four-year sentence for sexual offences against children, and publishing child pornography. “Her method of operating is to offer babysitting and child care/ daycare services and communicating online with children,” police said in a media advisory.

Black is being supervised by the Chilliwack Community Corrections and monitored by the Chilliwack RCMP serious crime unit. Black is described as a tall (6’1”) white woman weighing about 170 lbs. She has brown hair, hazel eyes and wears glasses.

Her conditions of release include: • No contact with anyone under 16; • Not to attend any public place or daycare centre where persons under age 16 might be present; • Not to own, possess or use a computer, phone or other device that has internet access, or communicate online with any person under age 16; • Not to have a relationship with the parents or guardians of children, unless they have been informed of her criminal history in the presence of her probation officer. Jennifer Feinberg The Progress Parking meters are being installed in Cultus Lake Park. Despite the decision to remove pay parking from provincial parks across B.C., there is no similar move being considered in the lots run by the Cultus Lake Park Board, confirmed board chair Sacha Peter. The fact that millions visit the park every year necessitates finding a way to cover costs incurred by the park board, the official added. “Parking fees are a way of recouping those costs,” Peter said. “We consider them to be

each of the two parking lots,” Campbell said. The pay parking stations require a licence plate number to be inputted. Fees are $1 for an hour, $2 for three hours or $5 for all day. “We’re trying to make it more user friendly for people who want to walk the dog or sit on the beach for a short time,” said Campbell. The park board used to have a staffer on duty in each of their two parking lots, Parking Lot A to the east, and Parking Lot B to the west, and collected parking fees from summer visitors that way. By early June the remaining two new units should be installed.

the admission price for the lake, and a fairly inexpensive one at that.” Park board administrator Ron Campbell said they receive “absolutely no provincial funding” for the operation of Cultus Lake Park. It’s mandated to be a park by the province, but funding is mostly from campground revenues and residential/commercial lease fees. Consequently, the park board approved the introduction of pay parking meters with a new fee structure last fall for implementation in the spring of 2011. “We’re hoping the first two meters will be in place by the May long weekend with one in

Parking fees axed in B.C. provincial parks Parking fees have been lifted from 41 provincial parks around B.C., and the provincial government will make up the $650,000 annual revenue in the environment ministry budget. Premier Christy Clark and Environment Minister Terry Lake made the announcement Tuesday at Mt. Seymour Provincial Park in North Vancouver, to mark the 100th anniversary of the B.C. parks system. The parking fees have been unpopular since they were introduced in the first term of the B.C. Liberal government. The environment ministry says they brought in about $1 million a year, of which $350,000 went

R AESIDE

An independent panel looking into the impact of the HST has concluded that, yes, the HST is costing average people a substantial amount of money and, no, it is not revenue neutral. The panel was commissioned to debunk some of the myths and political spin around the tax, in preparation for the upcoming referendum. It has done its best to give accurate numbers about the impact of the tax on individuals and businesses, and about job creation and lower prices for consumers. The panel concluded that the HST is costing average family an extra $350 a year, with a small portion of that offset by lower income tax rates. Most people do not get the HST rebate, but for those who do, the impact is substantially less. The panel also concluded that the number of jobs which will be created by B.C. having a value-added tax will likely be nowhere near as high as the BC Liberal government has claimed. It estimates that 24,000 jobs will be created over the next 10 years, about 20 per cent of the 113,000 figure cited by government. The panel said the tax is good for businesses, who will pay $730 million less annually. Consumers, however, will pay a net $1.33 billion more, and that includes other tax breaks (such as income tax) and HST rebates. Very clearly, this is a major tax shift. The panel said that the restaurant industry has not been too badly hurt by the tax, citing Statistics Canada information. The industry disputes this. In its own survey of members, the Canadian Restaurant and Foodservices association says sales have dropped 15 per cent since July, when the HST was introduced. The association acknowledges that the imposition of tougher drinking and driving laws has also been a big factor, as alcohol sales have dropped by more than 20 per cent since new rules came in. As people consider how to vote in the HST referendum, the information the panel presents (accessible at www.hstinbc.ca) is very helpful in putting the whole issue into context. However, unless the government offers some substantial breaks for average families, the tax appears to be doomed. ~ Black Press

L OCALLY G LOBAL

Death of bin Laden brings more questions With the stunning surprise of Osama bin Laden’s death sinking in, many questions both curious and legal are starting to surface. The demise of the infamous terrorist responsible for the death of thousands of people in mass atrocities was met with shock by some and jubilation by others around the world. But as details of the raid emerged, changed, then changed some more, some are raising questions about bin Laden’s whereabouts, whether his killing was legal in the eyes of international law, and just what Pakistan intelligence and military forces knew about his presence in the country. BBC news reported in an interview with Benjamin Ferencz, international law specialist and prosecutor during the Nuremburg trials, that the issue surrounding bin Laden’s fate by the US Navy SEALS was whether what

happened was an act of legitimate self-defence. Ferencz said that killing a captive who poses no immediate threat is a crime under militar y law and all other law. But without knowing exactly what happened in the moments leading to bin Laden’s death, definitive judgment is hard. Margaret What some law experts fear is a EVANS global assassination policy, not that they don’t already exist in some below-radar form. International law also dictates that one country cannot enter another countr y without its authorization to capture of kill a national of a third state. Unilateral actions weaken legitimacy and Pakistan’s Prime Minister Yusuf

Raza Gilani has already warned of ‘serious consequences’. But that likely won’t amount to a hill of beans given the $20 billion in economic aid the U.S. has shovelled into their coffers since 2001, $14 billion of which was for security assistance. Congress is now debating whether to make changes to aid to this wobbly ally some call unceremoniously the ‘frenemy’. The al Qaeda leader’s whereabouts have reached almost mythical status in past years. He was seen in the Tora Bora mountains of eastern Afghanistan in 2001 and was then seen in Waziristan in Pakistan’s tribal areas around 2005. This was a guy who had banned from his life cell phones and the Internet, was neurotically secretive about his whereabouts and never stayed anywhere for long, preferring the below-radar villages along the Afghanistan

border. The U.S. claims he had been living for six years in Abbottabad at a fortified compound with high walls, barbed wire and security cameras just a kilometre from the prestigious Pakistan Military Academy. For some Pakistani intelligence officials that’s hard to believe. In towns like these, news usually gets out that there’s a character of note in the neighbourhood. Did no one question, suspect, wonder about anything? Once in a while, the kids inside the compound came out to play. Did they never say anything to anyone, even by accident? Many think it unbelievable that no-one in that country’s military, intelligence or government knew where bin Laden was. His three widows are currently in Pakistani custody and the U.S. is itching for a chance to talk with them. When the Navy SEALS took

custody of bin Laden’s body, they also seized a treasure trove of computers, hard drives and videos in the largest haul of terrorist information ever in one operation. They likened the volume of information to that found in a small college. There’s no doubt the U.S. has seen Pakistan as an essential partner in their war against al Qaeda. But the queasy question now is whether they knew more than they admitted, covered for bin Laden, or whether their intelligence was completely incompetent at tracing the whereabouts of such a high profile person. Relations between Pakistan and the U.S. are already at an all-time low. What emerges from further investigation could easily put that relationship in crisis.

Congratulations to L ydia Saunders for speaking out about the situation in our federal prison system. (Jails a ‘Club Fed’ for prisoners, says former prison nurse, Progress, May 3.) She voices an opinion, based on hard facts, that

the majority of the public already feels, namely, that too many of our politicians are soft on crime. Let’s hope that our newly-elected majority government will start listening to those of us who pay taxes to support this farce called

‘Canadian Justice’, conduct an independent investigation into prisoners’ rights and start giving less benefits to the prisoners and more to their victims. I Robertson Dryden ON

Texting driver puts others at risk On May 7th at approximately 6:50 pm we were driving north down the Columbia Valley Highway. Just as we approached the entrance to Riverstone Heights a white SUV swerved left in front

of us into the development. I was a passenger and I noted the driver of the SUV was not only driving fast, he was looking down! It was obvious that he was texting. I have noticed many motorists texting

while driving but this was a very close call. If we had left our home a few seconds earlier we would have been broadsided. I know that writing letters to the editor is not always the best way to get a message

across but I am hoping that the fellow texting that night will read this and realize that he is putting himself and others in jeopardy. Joanne Nokleby Cultus Lake

Thankful for the kindness shown by others My parents are both in their 80s and live in Chilliwack, they have a route that they walk daily, east on Airport Road. In early to mid March during their walk my father suddenly did not feel well, so he and mom abruptly turned around and headed home. A car stopped and a woman spoke to them and said that she

saw them turn around and she knew that they usually went straight, was everything okay and did they need a ride? They declined the ride, but were grateful for her offer of assistance, my father noticed a sticker on her vehicle for the tourist information center. I was so touched when my parents related their experience,

as I live over four hours away in Washington State. It gave me peace of mind to know that there was someone out there looking out for my parents. I would like to thank her for her thoughtfulness and caring. What a great asset she is to the City of Chilliwack and the tourist center. Frances Tait

Residents organize to fight crime CRIME from Front It’s a view shared by the RCMP. “I totally agree with you, I know what you’re saying,” Bosnell told the residents at one point. But police hands are tied by the very laws they are paid to enforce. Bosnell said he personally believed many medical marijuana grow-ops approved by Health Canada are “dirty” or illegal. But judges won’t grant police the warrants needed to search licensed grow-ops without evidence, he said, yet police can’t get the evidence to prove illegal-

ity without doing a search. Medical grow-ops are required to be inspected by Health Canada, but Bosnell said he’d never seen a Health Canada inspector in all his experience as a police officer. “I think Health Canada is afraid to tackle the problem,” he said. Asked by one resident how the community can be “positively vigilant” in the future to thwart another criminal invasion, Bosnell replied: “You have to look after yourself.” And by that he meant expanding the neighborhood watch network already existing in Ryder Lake.

An orange 1974 Buick Apollo being restored by elementary school students in Boston Bar was stolen sometime over the weekend. Police said the car, with a distinctive white racing stripe, was being used as a school project, and was stolen along with a green U-Bilt flat deck trailer sometime between 4:30 p.m. April 30 and 10:30 a.m. May 2. “It’s very disappointing to have this car sto-

Peter Whitlock, president of the Ryder Lake Farmers’ Institute that organized the meeting, said residents will meet in the next two weeks for more details on forming Grow Watch groups that specifically target marijuana growers. He said the purpose of the Thursday meeting with police was to “bring down the concerns a bit” of residents following a recent rash of break-ins. “I think people were happy with the process,” he said, after the meeting. “They wanted to know what was going on, and they got that from the RCMP.”

Miles for Smiles

News Chilliwack buses go to electronic fare collection Transit customers in Chilliwack can now use a new electronic system that will improve fare security, reduce fare disputes and collect accurate ridership data. Chilliwack is one of several communities across B.C. that has switched to this new electronic system. The new machines will record data from each fare card, such as product type, boarding time and bus route - valuable data that can be used to help determine future changes or improvements for the local transit system. Prior to the installation of the electronic fareboxes, customers simply showed their valid bus pass to the bus driver as proof of payment when boarding a bus. Now, passholders will be asked to swipe their encoded pass at the farebox when boarding a bus for validation. The method of payment remains the same for customers paying by ticket or cash. The encoded bus passes are now on sale.

Presented by Mt. Cheam Lions Club

When Lion Gord Hutton became a Mount Cheam Lion he attended a Unity meeting. This is a group of Lions Clubs in the area with representatives from each club participating. The idea was to combine the efforts of all the clubs to enhance the beneÂżts to the community. Different clubs working together can increase the good that we can do. While this group was kicking around the ideas, Lion Gord Hutton came up with the idea of the Walk ’N Knock Drive, knowing that the Salvation Army Food Bank was in need of replenishing at this time of year. Soon, other service groups and numerous volunteers joined in this project. Since that time Lion Gord Hutton had chaired the group until he passed away a few years ago. In honor of Gord the name was ofÂżcially changed last year to the Gord Hutton Walk And Knock. This project is now in its 21st year. This year we have changed the date to May 31st to correspond with National Hunger Awareness Day. When a volunteer arrives at your door on that day collecting non-perishable food items, please give generously. The seniors project that the Mount Cheam Lions has initiated a short time ago is going strong. We feel it is a great success. The seniors are enjoying it as it helps to Âżll the gap left by the discontinuation of the Seniors Time Out Program. The tremendous turnout of volunteers for this ongoing project is very heartwarming and I would like to thank each and every one involved. I’d like to Âżnish with a Thomas Jefferson quote – “Determine never to be idle. No person will have occasion to complain of the want of time who never loses any. It is wonderful how much may be done if we are always doing.â€? Until next time Club News brought to you by: “WE SERVEâ€? Johns Electronics Ltd. — Lion Jerry McEvoy

Students are (from left to right) Natalie Steele, Carissa Dyck, Marguerite Rheaume, Lara Kustaski-Hein, and Alyssa Stewart.

Student nurses take training to Belize that will allow the UFV student nurses to see how health care is provided in other countries. Edwards says the learning opportunities are endless. “I travelled to Belize last year, to see if a program like ours would work there, and it seems ideal,” Edwards says. “It is a very different culture that that of Canada, but it is an English-speaking country and is relatively peaceful and a safe place to travel to.” Belize, formally British Honduras, is still part of the British Commonwealth and it still has a strong English presence in the country. It gained independence in 1964, changed its name to Belize in 1973 and became an independent nation in 1981. For Edwards, it offers the perfect combination of cultural diversity, security, and learning opportunity. Edwards met with instructors from the University of Belize last year and has ironed out all the details for the study tour. The students will have lots of opportunity to learn, while also enjoying some

of the tourist destinations unique to the Central American country. The student nurses leave in early May and while there they will visit a 120-bed tertiary hospital and an 18-bed private hospital in Belize City. They will also visit a Mission hospital in the town of San Ignacio, where they will be based for much of their stay. Their visit coincides with International Nurses Day, so they will also be able to participate in events dedicated to celebrating nurses, and attend Ministry of Education health workshops. Students will also visit with local residents, assess the health of family members, and propose health promotion strategies to help families. “One of our objectives of the study tour is to explore the similarities and differences of nursing roles and nursing education between Canada and Belize,” Edwards says. “While visiting the hospitals, they will be there basically as observers, but they will also have the opportunity meet with nurses, and other nursing students,

and directly see what nursing is like in Belize.” Edwards has done lots of background work with UFV administration, the International department, and within the Faculty of Health Sciences to get the study tour approved and up and running. While sounds like a lot of fun, is the experience will also count as a threecredit course, and the student nurses will be asked to report on basic issues like how the customs and beliefs of the residents can affect general health care, and the impact of Belize health care policies, and its delivery system, on the health and well-being of the countries residents. “I expect our students will learn a lot in the short time that we are,” adds Edwards. “And they will see different styles of medical care, and health care issues, that I can talk about in a classroom, but could never demonstrate them as well as what they will see while in Belize.”

While universities can offer great teaching, it’s a proven fact that many great learning opportunities happen during hands-on situations. And when you can make that hands-on situation occur in a country other than your own, it opens many doors for the adventurous student. The University of the Fraser Valley is introducing a new course option that will allow its senior nursing students to travel to Belize on a field study tour. Nursing instructor Sheila Edwards says the newly introduced International Nursing option is a three-credit course that combines 20 hours of classroom study with a two-week study tour to Belize. Belize is the perfect country for a nursing study tour, explains Edwards, as it has a fairly stable political landscape and is an English-speaking country. It is, however, a very poor nation that struggles with health issues such as malnutrition, dysentery, and malaria. It also has a busy university that teaches health sciences, and has multiple layers of hospitals and clinics

Often just re-arranging elements in your home’s interior can make a significant difference, for a small investment of time and money. If your living room is crowded with furniture, keep the newer, better-looking pieces and put your well-worn leather club chair in storage. Eliminate some of the clothing in your closets and they will appear larger. Repaint the mint green bedroom and the pumpkin colored dining room in neutral tones, a better palette for the buyer’s mental transfer of their furniture into you home. Bring in a professional cleaning company so your home can be shown in sparkling condition. Purchase some flowering plants to enliven the entrance, where buyers receive their first impression of the interior. Replace any counter clutter with flower arrangements, fruit bowls or designer home accessories. Ask your real estate agent for feedback from other Realtors who brought clients through your home regarding their impressions of your home and their reasons for not making an offer. If these comments coincide with your re-assessment of the strengths and defects of your home, you’ll know what areas to address in order to improve your likelihood of selling.

Placing your home on the market in this favorable climate, you might expect your property to sell quickly and easily, for close to the listing price. But what if your home has been sitting on the market longer than you expected and you have not been approached with offers you can take seriously? It may be time to have a frank discussion with your Realtor and re-evaluate your expectations regarding the sale. Start by looking at your asking price. Does it truly conform to the range of selling prices of comparable homes in your neighborhood? Are you attempting to get too high a return on the kitchen remodeling you did to make the house more attractive to buyers? If your real estate agent agrees, you may want to reduce the asking price. Next, put yourself in the buyer’s position and take a realistic look at your house and yard. Try to be critical of your home’s shortcomings: identify features a buyer might consider to be defects, and decide what you can improve. Look at the features of your home that would interest or attract a buyer, and try to highlight these areas. Ask your Realtor to give you constructive feedback about both your home’s assets and liabilities, then make a list of projects you want to work on.

The Mission... The Vision... An Enduring Purpose... A Future Focus... Who Am I... My Promise... These words begin to describe how I differ for the norm. I have spent the past 16 years in the Sales, Marketing, and Advertising field. It is this background that gives me a unique perspective of how a home should be marketed. Are you tired of leaving messages that aren’t being returned? Do you find it annoying when the homes advertised in the newspapers are not as they seem? Wouldn’t it be nice to work with someone who understands your point of view? Nothing puts a bigger smile on my face than having satisfied clients whom I have helped to reach their real estate goals. I provide you with the highest degree of professional service excellence and customer satisfaction that is “TOUGH to BEAT.” I am Mike DellaFortuna, and it would be my pleasure to help you.

Ask any old time Rosedale resident and they’ll tell you they are familiar with the Archibald house. This property has history! The original owners owned the Rosedale General Store and the solid oak counters from that store can be found in the basement of this home today. Meant to be a showpiece of it’s time, this home was built with quality and craftsmanship you will never see in modern buildings. Built-in bookshelves in the living and dining room, huge windows with stained glass accents, wood floors, 10 inch baseboards is just the beginning of what awaits you. Each of the three spacious bedrooms upstairs has it’s own walk-in closet with a window. The bright renovated kitchen has lost none of it’s original charm. Many more updates including electrical and plumbing have been done. Languish in the morning sun or entertain in the evening on the wrap-around veranda. Two thirds of the 1/4 acre property is fully fenced to keep in the smallest dog. The backyard finds it’s way down to the Hope River. An absolute treat to view. Call Tamra Ford of Sutton Group Showplace Realty today at 604-793-9900. See more photographs at www.tamraford.ca

Chilliwack is not my hometown, but it feels like it is. I was born in Tisdale, Saskatchewan and spent most of my growing up on a dairy farm. After graduation I moved to Calgary for 15 years, then my husband was transferred to the coast and we made our home in Surrey. I moved out here as a single mom with my three kids almost 12 years ago. We loved Chilliwack immediately and my family has had a very happy life here. So I feel like I’m well qualified to work with new people coming to the area, as well as those who have been here forever, because I believe in this city. I think I’ve found a little piece of paradise and the wisest people know this to be true. Give me a call anytime for your complimentary market evaluation or if you know someone moving to town, pass along my name, because Chilliwack is my hometown now.

Graduating Grizzly signs with UFV

Caps visit Chilliwack

Eric J. Welsh, The Progress Though she spent the first nine years of her life in Manitoba, Amber Gregory considers Chilliwack her hometown. And that’s why the soon-to-be-graduated G.W. Graham student is so excited about the next step in her soccer career. The tenacious centermidfielder has signed on with the defending CIS champion University of the Fraser Valley Cascades, which means she’ll be sticking close to home for the immediate future. The 17-year-old has been fantastic for her high school club this year, helping the upstart Grizzlies to a 5-1-0 regular season record in the AA East league. But the scholarship opportunity came about through her work with the Abbotsford Soccer Association’s metro program. “My coach in Abbotsford (Peter Errington) was also the coach at UFV a couple years ago and he saw me play a lot,” Gregory explained. “When I was with Abbotsford’s U-17 team I got called up to the U-18 team for a game. Peter told me it was one of the best games he’d ever seen me play, and if I stuck around there would be scholarship opportunities.” Errington passed her name along to current UFV coach Rob Giesbrecht, who met with Gregory to discuss the program. “We met at a Starbucks in Chilliwack and he told me about himself, his coaching philosophy and stuff,” Gregory recalled. “The meeting ended with him giving me a letter of intent to sign.” With tuition rates for one semester running in the $1,600 range, Gregory had set her sights on a soccer scholarship several years ago. Having that letter of intent in hand was exhilarating. “To know that I had done well enough to draw interest from

Chilliwack is getting set to host a Vancouver Whitecaps women’s game May 27 as the Colorado Rush invade the Fraser Valley. All proceeds from the W-League game, being played at Exhibition Stadium, will be split between the Canadian Cancer Society and the B.C. Cancer Foundation. The Whitecaps will wear special jerseys during the game that will auctioned off afterwards to help the cause. Tickets are $10 each, on sale now by contacting chilliwackfcinfo@gmail. com.

The Whitecaps will be hosting a prematch clinic for players between the ages of 6 and 10 on May 27. Clinic participants must have a ticket to that night’s game and limited space is dealt with on a first-comefirst-serve basis. Find registration info online at www. chilliwackfc.com. The Whitecaps are also looking for local soccer players to serve as ball retrievers, flag bearers and team escorts on game day. This is also on a first-come-first-serve basis and info for that can be found at the Chilliwack FC website. Finally, there is an opportunity for spring and fall teams to participate in halftime mini-games. Coaches should contact CFC president Andrea Laycock at cfcchair@gmail.com.

someone, that was definitely exciting,” she admitted. Gregor y’s game might not be the flashiest on the planet, but her safe style is exactly what coaches love. A responsible and cerebral player, she makes it a priority to keep the ball away from the opposition and she makes the right play far more often than not. “If I have the ball and I don’t see anyone open, I’ll hold onto it rather than just kick it away,” she said of her patient approach. “I’ll kick it off the field if there’s no other option, but I really strive to not turn the ball over. And if I get

knocked off the ball I’ll get it back. I don’t give up.” That approach has made her a key player for the fast-improving Grizzlies, who are the latest GWG team to turn the corner and suddenly become title contenders. Through the six game regular season schedule the Grizzlies scored 29 goals and surrendered just five, with Gregory working the ball up to talented finishers like Janelle Tucker, Kristie Voitic and Kayla Unger. Finishing her fourth and final year with the Grizzly girls, Gregory says it has been fun watching the team

develop. “This year especially I’ve noticed a lot of big improvements, where everything the coaches have been trying to teach us has caught up with us,” she said. “Working harder on and off the ball, better movement and play making — the whole team really works together better now than we ever did before.” Their near spotless regular season had the Grizzlies in line to host Surrey Christian in the Fraser Valley playoff opener Monday, with the winner moving on to another game Wednesday. Gregory would love

to cap her high school career with a provincial run before joining the Cascades. “This season has been very enjoyable because of the winning,” Gregory said. “We’ve evolved into a better team and I’m happy that I’ll be able to look back on my last year as a successful one.” And then, off to university. “I’ve played summer league with a lot of the girls on the Cascades,” Gregory said. “The first couple times I was pretty intimidated and nervous, but I’ve calmed down and I hope that I can fit in well and play my game.”

The fourth round of the B.C. Golf Junior Spring Tour teed off at Meadow Gardens this weekend. Swan-E-Set golfers dominated the tournament, with the top four all shooting under par. In first place, shooting a five-under-par 67 was Tai-In Lee. Second and third place went to Kevin Kwon and Andy Yang, both shooting 68’s. Kevin Ko shot a 69 to finish fourth.

Representing the Chilliwack Golf and Country Club, Connor McLellan shot an impressive 76 to finished tied for 13th in the field of 49. Scott Gibson, also from CGCC, shot a 79 to finish tied for 26th place. The fifth of six tournaments goes next Sunday, with golfers teeing off at Chilliwack’s Royalwood Golf and RV Resort. NATIONAL NURSES WEEK 2011 Often described as an art and a science, nursing is a profession that embraces dedicated people with varied interests, strengths and passions because of the many opportunities the profession offers. As nurses, we work in emergency rooms, school based clinics, and homeless shelters, to name a few. We have many roles – from staff nurse to educator to nurse practitioner and nurse researcher – and serve all of them with passion for the profession and with a strong commitment to patient safety.

National School Nurse Day : May 11, 2011 National Student Nurses Day : May 8, 2011 International Nurses Day : May 12, 2011 National Nurses Week begins each year on May 6th and ends on May 12th, Florence Nightingale's birthday. These permanent dates enhance planning and position National Nurses Week as an established recognition event. As of 1998, May 8 was designated as National Student Nurses Day, to be celebrated annually. As of 2003, National School Nurse Day is celebrated on the Wednesday within National Nurses Week (May 6-12) each year. International Nurses Day is celebrated around the world on May 12th of each year. The theme for National Nurses Week in 2011 is "Nurses Trusted to Care." 5-11T NNW10

...we’ll all have a hand in its’ creation

Perennials are a gardener’s friend Gardening is often seen as an art form to men and women with a green thumb. Once the landscape is designed, homeowners may not want to change much from year to year. That is where perennial plants can be an advantage. Designing a landscape and keeping the garden looking beautiful can take a keen eye. It also may require a lot of time and commitment. If home gardeners have to replant items year after year, gardening can become time-consuming and expensive. Turning to perennial plants and flowers to serve as the anchor for a home garden can make the process easier. Perennials are plants that live indefinitely. In terms of flowering plants, perennials will bloom every year. In essence, they have the staying power of shrubbery but are more delicate in nature and often appealing to the eye. There are perennials for every season, soil type and sun exposure. Perennials come in a wide variety of blooming flowers or attractive foliage. Chances are if a homeowner wants to add perennials to the

garden, there is a variety available that will fit his or her needs. Here are some perennials that can be added to the garden: lavender, ornamental grasses, asters, chrysanthemums, irises, poppies, milkweed, goldentufts, anemones, columbines, daylilies, peonies and hostas. Once perennials are in place, there is relatively minimal maintenance that is required. The tune-ups that may be needed are some deadheading to promote new and stronger growth and some cleaning up after winter before the new blooming season takes place. Once warmer spring weather arrives and the ground is not too muddy or rain-soaked, clear out any leaves and debris that have gathered around where perennials are located. Gardeners can also till the mulch or

soil in these areas to aerate the planting beds. Using shears, cut down any dead grasses, stems and stalks from spent perennials that overwintered. Remove any dead wood and broken branches. Be careful not to trim spring-blooming shrubs because some flowers bloom on year-old stems and this can cause the plant not to flower. Perennials that aren’t flowering as well as they used to or have dead centers may need to be divided to promote stronger growth. This should be done in early spring before the plant blooms or late fall before the winter arrives. Dividing plants and replanting not only grows the garden, but also it is a healthy revitalization for the plant. Gardeners who prefer to take a laid-back approach to gardening may appreciate the ease with which a beautiful and easy-to-maintain www. landscape can be created with perennials. Luxurious spa bathrooms becoming a new trend Some of the most requested bathroom renovation features include glass showers, soaker tubs and heated tile floors.

May y Sale!

Maggie Calloway A luxurious spa bathroom is at the top of most renovation wish lists. Once we were exposed to modern hotel bathrooms, we wanted our own bathrooms to change from a utilitarian room to an oasis of calm and relaxation. Gone are the bathrooms of old with vinyl wallpaper, coloured fittings (dare we whisper avocado?), shag rug and a cute toilet paper cover. Bathrooms are now much larger rooms built to hold a separate glass shower with rain shower heads and body sprays and, for the totally spoiled, steam showers. Bathtubs are extra deep soaker tubs or Jacuzzis to whisk away the cares of the day. Televisions are built into the walls or even the mirror and cappuccino machines at the ready. Your personal playlist is piped into the shower through waterproof speakers. The floors are warm and the towels are fluffed and tearing oneself away from this to face the world must be almost impossible. Todd Senft, Principal of reVision Custom Homes, knows all about building luxurious bathrooms. One of his recent projects is a finalist in the first-ever Greater Vancouver Home Builders’ Association 2010 Home RenOVATION Awards. A good size at 10’ x 16’ but not huge, the appeal is the feeling of serenity one gets from the simplicity.

There are no bells and whistles, but every inch of this bathroom has been thought out and care has been taken to get everything perfectly executed. The 8’ x 6’ ft walk-in shower, with shower heads and body sprays, and the deep soaker tub offer luxury but with clean spare lines. “The tub is six feet long dropped into a surround built of Wenge wood, the same wood used in the vanity,” Senft says. “Wenge wood from Africa is very hard, perfect for bathrooms.” Located in an older home, the original bathroom was much smaller. “We made this bathroom much bigger by incorporating a closet and the separate room which held the toilet,” Senft says. “We also raised the vanity off the floor which also gives the illusion of space.” The vanity mirrors float four inches off the wall, mimicing the vanity that is also floating off the floor. The two sinks are spaced to match the length of the bathtub, which Senft says gives symmetry to the room. Storage, always an issue in the bathroom, is built into the 12’ long vanity which allows everything to be stored behind those closed doors. All of these details add up to a perfectly balanced room. You may not individually notice each detail but you feel the totality in this luxurious bath.

BEFORE This bathroom renovation by reVision Custom Homes has been nominated for a Greater Vancouver Home Builders’ Association of B.C. RenOVATION Award. Contributed photo

Finally, he concentrated on the Vedder Crossing location, where he appreciated his loyal customers, whom he greeted by name, until his retirement in 1986. His love of sport prompted him to organize the first Chilliwack Community Football League and the first public swimming lessons at Cultus Lake. He had a passion for fishing, golf, tennis, football, poker and bridge. He was a proud Kinsman and Rotarian and was an avid traveller. He travelled the world and had spent the last twentyfive winters in Maui. Bill will be missed dearly; his kindness and love brought two families together. Family and friends are invited to gather at 3:30 pm on Saturday, May 14, 2011 at the Water’s Edge Club House, 2600 Ferguson Road, Saanichton. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Victoria Epilepsy and Parkinson’s Centre, 813 Darwin Avenue, Victoria, BC V8X 2X7 or BC Cancer Agency, 2410 Lee Avenue, Victoria, BC V8R 6V5 would be appreciated.
