It’s more than coffee at Coffee Plus that have become such a hit. On a gloomy, wet afternoon, nothing warms the soul better than a bowl of hot soup, Yap says. But don’t arrive too late, he adds. Once they’re gone, they’re gone until a fresh batch is made the next day. The soups are not the only thing homemade. Sandwiches, too, have Sandi’s expert touch. For example, the turkey doesn’t come from a package. It’s freshly roasted and then sliced. Scones and deserts are also made fresh. As for the coffee, that certainly hasn’t been neglected. Coffee Plus offers a choice of organic and fair trade blends, as well as the rich and deeper flavours of more traditional varieties. The decor is clean and comfortable, Yap says. When the space was remodeled, the emphasis was on new. And that combination is

The day starts early at Coffee Plus. Long before most of us have had our first cup of Morning Joe, Sandi Lange is working on the “Plus” side of Coffee Plus. Although fine, rich and roasted coffee is an integral part of the downtown café, it’s not the only part, says owner Melvin Yap. The Yale Road business sprang from humble beginnings. It was originally opened a few months ago to serve people working in the same building. “We wanted a nice place for people to go and relax and have a coffee,” says Yap. But since then, its reputation has grown. It’s become a favourite place for people to stop by for a quick lunch or comforting snack. Sandi’s day starts at around 5:30 a.m. She’s preparing ingredients for the homemade soups

The art of hair design at Inkspell

Jocelyn Wilson always had an artistic flare. The challenge, as many artists discover, is finding a way to earn a living and provide for your family from the proceeds of your work. For Jocelyn, the solution was to diversify. Several years back she decided to turn her talent for visual artistry to hair

design. “I thought it would be a good extension of my art,” she says. Hair design, she says, is often like sculpting. Complemented by her eye for colour, symmetry and style, the combination was a successful mix that soon earned her a loyal clientele. Her success was spread mostly by the

In the meantime, many of her former clients are finding their way back to her new salon, and she’s confident about the future. “I like to say, ‘If I get someone in my chair once, that’s all I need,’” Jocelyn says with a laugh. recommendations of others. “I’ve always felt that my work is my best advertising.” Unfortunately illness prevented her from continuing. And at one point she was even uncertain if she would ever be able to be a hair stylist again. However, she looked to her creative roots for inspiration and decided to add tattoo artistry to her repertoire. When Jocelyn learned she would be able to continue working as a hair stylist, she decided to keep the tattoo service. And thus was born Inkspell Tattoo and Hair Design. Located just off Kipp and Main Street, the business has only been open a few weeks. But already the word is spreading. “It’s really going well,” she says. The combination of hair and tattoo styling is a reflection of the changing perception of tattoos. “They’ve become more mainstream,” Jocelyn says. Nonetheless, clients who might consider getting a tattoo may still feel uncertain about walking into a more conventional tattoo parlour. Inkspell will help bridge that
