Two years for fatal home invasion The Progress Two Surrey suspects were sentenced to nine years in prison Friday for their part in a Harrison Hot Springs home invasion three years ago that left one man dead and another seriously injured. But because of the “two-forone” rule for time in custody awaiting trial, the pair will spend only another two years and nine months in jail. Robert Hugo Grattan, 25, and Nicole Amanda Birch, 27, pleaded guilty earlier to charges of manslaughter, aggravated assault

and robbery. B.C. Supreme Court Justice William Grist said neither accused was directly involved in the shooting death of Scott Daniel Lee, which took place after several suspects entered the home on Echo Avenue to rob the occupants of drugs and money on Nov. 23, 2007 at about 2 p.m. However, Ronald Thom identified Grattan during a court hearing in November as the man who shot him. Thom said he was in the house fixing the plumbing when the robbery took place. Grist said that Grattan and Birch tied up three of the victims,

"We went to JC for our new TV. The service was fantastic and they really knew the products. It was awesome. Great place, great people!" $1.25

and their use of a taser during the planned robbery “added to the overall terror of the assault.” “At some point during the robbery,” Grist continued, Lee returned to the home and several shots were fired. “Lee was shot in the back, in the driveway, where he died,” Grist said. Four of the home invaders left in a van, but Grattan and Birch left the area on foot. Still wearing body armour, the pair was arrested walking down the street about 20 minutes later, and have been in custody ever since.

The police investigation to locate and arrest the remaining suspects continues. RCMP Cpl. Dale Carr, spokesman for the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, said outside the courtroom Friday that investigators won’t stop until they hold everyone “accountable” for the home invasion. “We’re going to continue to move forward to gather the evidence,” he said. The Chilliwack courtroom was filled Friday by friends of the accused, and by police and court officials. rfreeman@theprogress.com

Chilliwack River was on flood watch in the early hours of Monday morning after heavy rain drenched the area. The roaring Chilliwack River peaked at about 2 a.m. on Jan. 17 above Slesse Creek and at Vedder Crossing. “Water levels receded overnight, and are continuing to recede today,” according to a release from the B.C. River Forecast Centre. A high streamflow advisory for other areas also ended, just as rainfall warnings were lifted in the Fraser Valley. FVRD emergency program coordinator Lynn Orstad said she and other FVRD staff were on-site overnight during the flood watch, monitoring the Wilson Road dike. “You could hear the water coming down in a rush, with boulders knocking into each other and trees bouncing like toothpicks. There was just a huge roar,” she said. “Thankfully it crested.” They were prepared. “We had also brought in pumps in the event that we needed to pump the flood water back into the river,” she said. The Chilliwack River above Slesse and at Vedder Crossing crested just above a two-year level of 3.38 metres at about 3.5. No evacuations were required in the end. Residents of riverside trailers were warned at about 8 p.m. that they might have to evacuate, but river levels were about a metre away from spilling over the banks. Now staff will be busy watching for debris flow and other blockages on local creeks and rivers. “We’re trying to get a handle on it before the next system arrives. We’re going to keep on top of it,” Orstad said.

Political warhorse White set to ride again Robert Freeman The Progress Randy White, an outspoken MP for the federal Conservatives and for the Reform Party before that, promises to hold politicians’ feet to the fire at a BC Conservative Party meeting in Chilliwack later this month. “I’m not holding anything back,” White promised in a telephone interview from his home on Vancouver Island. White was among the first Reform MPs who took Ottawa by storm in 1993 to form the official opposition after the federal

Conservatives were nearly eliminated from the Canadian political scene. The Abbotsford MP was never far from controversy after that, until he left politics in 2006. Now White has joined the BC Conservative Party and formed an “advisory” panel with other conservative notables Brian Peckford and Rita Johnson. The party plans to hold a leadership convention May 28 in an undetermined Fraser Valley location, but White insisted he’s not a contender. Well, maybe. “You never say never in these things,” he said.

There are several unannounced leadership candidates, he added, “one of them I’d very much support, but I can’t tell you who it is because they haven’t said ‘yes’ at the moment.” “But I would be in there through thick and thin with that person,” he said. With the BC Liberals wounded by the furor over the HST, BC Conservative officials say their membership is growing. Ben Besler, the party’s regional director in the Fraser Valley, said constituency organizations have been organized in all but one Fraser Valley riding - Maple Ridge/Mission.

White said the enthusiasm of the new members, some of whom arrive at meetings with cheques in hand - reminds him of the grassroots start of the Reform Party. “This is very reminiscent of the Reform Party days,” he said. White said his speech in Chilliwack will take aim at what politicians “of all ilk” have not been doing over the last decade. Like the availability of child porn. “It’s available to just about anybody of any age,” White said. “Politicians have not dealt with that fact.” Without naming names, he lambasted the “stupidity” of a BC

Liberal party candidate who suggested holding lotteries for tax cuts, as an incentive to get voters to the polls in the next provincial election. “Put something in front of them they want to vote for,” snorted the veteran political warhorse. White is scheduled to speak at the Chilliwack Lions Club at 47130 Hope River Rd. starting at 7 p.m. The next day he is scheduled to speak in Maple Ridge at City Hall starting at 2 p.m., and in Abbotsford later that evening at the Garden Park Tower on Clearbrook Road starting at 7 p.m. rfreeman@theprogress.com

IT’S WHAT MOTIVATES.

A spiritual and financial revival of sorts may be seen in downtown Chilliwack as the Promontory Community Church takes up residence in the Liquidation World building on Main Street. The church hopes to move its main services from its present location at the Promontory Heights community school to the downtown site by March. But services will be offered in both locations, John Vermeer, the church’s executive director, confirmed Friday. Vermeer is also a member of the city’s downtown core task force. “Downtown is far from dead,” he said, but it’s hoped the church at the corner of Main Street and Princess Avenue will help draw more people to the area and “revive it to heights we’ve never imagined.” There is no financial connection between the church and Liquidation World. The church will occupy 10,000 square feet of the 57,000 square-foot building, and lease the remainder to Liquidation World under terms of a purchase agreement reached in October. Most of the church’s congregation live outside the Promontory area, some of them coming from as far away as Abbotsford. Vermeer said the church started looking for a “permanent place” several years ago, after its membership outgrew the capacity of the school location. He said a raw land development costing millions of dollars was “not in keeping” with the church’s vision. “We want to use our money for people ... for changing lives,” he said. When the church saw the Liquidation World building up for sale, he said negotiations started for the site as a potential purchase for re-development. The downtown could use some spiritual and financial help, he agreed. “That’s a whole area that could use some help,” he said, adding he believed downtown residents will find appealing the church’s informal dress and the “Kids’ City” ministry that will be going into a building next door to the church.

Spot is a city dog without much inclination for adventure, according to those who know him. But the eight-year-old mixed Labrador from Vancouver had an experience to rival the popular children’s tale The Incredible Journey in mid-December. Spot was staying in Abbotsford with Shirley Tam, the sister of his owner, Kit, who had gone on a Mexican vacation with her husband. Shirley and her husband, Stan, live on five acres on Sumas Mountain – the ideal spot for a pooch to exercise his freedom. But Spot isn’t like that. He has stayed with the Tams many times. Rather than frolic in the wilderness for long periods, he sticks close to the house and pleads to come back inside within about 30 minutes of being let out. On the morning of Tuesday, Dec. 14, Spot didn’t come running when Shirley called him. A search of the property turned up no sign of the white dog with the partially black head. Several hours later, he still hadn’t returned. There had been snow that day, and Shirley and Stan were worried. Shirley phoned neighbours, the local pound, the SPCA and the closest vet clinic. She also notified her sister, who had returned from Mexico and was due to pick up Spot the following day. The next morning, Shirley knocked on neighbours’ doors and showed them a picture of Spot. Somebody said he had seen a white dog walking along Sumas Mountain Road. The Tams concluded that Spot must have escaped from their fenced property when Stan was leaving for work.

City councillors voted last week to permanently change their meeting days. Council will now conduct city business in council chambers on the first and third Tuesdays of the month, instead of Mondays. “I think it will make everything work more smoothly,” said Mayor Sharon Gaetz. The idea is to give Chilliwack council and city staff, as well as the local media, ample time to go over the council agenda and have any related queries answered before the afternoon and evening meetings get underway on

Tuesdays, she said. Mondays are sometimes “chaotic” at city hall and this might help, the mayor added. Statutory holidays also tend to fall on Mondays, so meetings were getting shifted to Tuesdays anyway. Coun. Pat Clark said councillors now receive the agendas by e-mail, usually by midday on Fridays, but it will certainly help those who work full-time or have family commitments to have that extra day to prepare. With recent agenda packages weighing in at more than 200 pages, it will mean the ability to get a head-start on all the reading, she said. “It’s going to be interesting to see if it makes a difference,” Clark said. “We’ll just have to see.”

Cultus Lake is getting a roundabout to slow down traffic at one of its busiest corners. Construction on the two-lane roundabout is

expected to get started soon at the intersection of Sunnyside Boulevard and Columbia Valley Road, said Ron Campbell, park manager at Cultus Lake Park Board. Related signage is also expected to go up

at the site “any day now” to announce the $311,360 project, he said. Through-traffic will be accommodated during the construction period, Campbell added, based on discussions at pre-construction meetings.

ICBC spies rapped for videotaping while driving Judge questions road safety of investigators’ tactics Jeff Nagel Black Press It’s bad enough ICBC investigators relentlessly videotaped an Abbotsford man in a fruitless attempt to reduce the payout he was due after being badly hurt in a car crash. But was it safe for the sur veillance spooks to videotape him one-handed while driving on busy streets and highways at the same time? That’s the question raised by a judge that now has the insurance corporation back-pedalling. B.C. Supreme Court Justice Nancy Morrison last month awarded Ron Madill $760,000 for damages and lost future earnings stemming from the 2004 accident on Clearbrook Road, where Madill was a passenger in a vehicle that was hit by another car. ICBC hired private investigators who videotaped Madill for hours at a time on numerous occasions between 2005 and 2010.

www. CHILLIWACK chilliwackford .com 30309 5-09F CF1

But Morrison concluded the videos did little to undermine his case and then noted much of the recording happened while investigators were driving in traffic, tailing Madill on road trips all over the Lower Mainland and to the Okanagan. “The investigators testified they drove with one hand on the wheel and the other hand operating the video camera, up at the side of their head, to allow them to view through the camera what they were taping, the judge stated in her decision in the case. “That continues to be their practice today, according to at least one of the investigators, which was interesting, considering from whom they receive their instructions, a corporation dedicated to road safety. ICBC officials now say they’ve ordered all contracted investigators to cease such tactics, which violate ICBC guidelines requiring they drive safely and obey traffic laws. “We don’t think driving with a video

camera with one hand and steering with the other is in compliance with those guidelines, spokesman Mark Jan Vrem told Black Press. “It’s not a safe way to operate a vehicle. Since ICBC’s private investigators work alone and not in pairs, it’s not clear how ICBC could have expected them to do anything but use a handheld camera while driving solo. Jan Vrem said the private investigation company ICBC uses had indicated it is installing dash-mounted cameras, which were to be in operation by this month. He said the videos recorded while driving happened before B.C.’s distracted driving laws took effect in early 2010, although court evidence suggests it continued through much of last year. Video cameras aren’t on the list of handheld electronic devices drivers are banned from using under the new law, Jan Vrem said, but he noted their use could amount to driving without due care and attention. Madill said he can’t

comment on the case because ICBC is now appealing the judgment and he doesn’t want to risk a lengthy delay in receiving his payout. But he was critical of the corporation’s investigation practices. “ICBC’s conduct in handling people isn’t in the interest of the people they insure, he said. “It’s in the interest of their bank accounts. Before the accident, Madill was an avid motorcyclist, pilot, gardener, skier and skydiver. His head injur y, which left him with headaches, vision and balance problems, means he likely won’t be able to keep his pilot’s licence or trucking licence. He’s had to ride a trike rather than the two-wheeled Harley he had before and he hasn’t skied since the crash. Although videos shot on 12 different days were entered in court, they make up a small slice of hundreds of hours that were recorded of Madill, his family and neighbours. The corporation made no apology for

hounding Madill or making extensive use of surveillance in other investigations. “We are dedicated to protecting our customers and their premium dollars against

fraud and exaggerated claims, Jan Vrem said. “We will not sit back and simply pass those costs on to our customers. ICBC would not specify how much

Promises worth duplicating

The Chilliwack

Progress

R AESIDE

The promises and proposals are coming fast and thick as the Liberal leadership hopefuls vie for support. Much of what’s been heard from the six contenders has been jockeying for internal party position, and probing for what might register on the public opinion meter. Does it make a difference in the long term whether the referendum on the HST is held next fall or earlier, as Moira Stilwell suggests? Are people all that interested in George Abbott’s proposed vote on the carbon tax, or whether Christy Clark would hold town hall meetings if she were premier? We’d answer “not really” for all the above. Not so with Abbotsford MLA Mike de Jong’s promises last week, which top those of his contenders in terms of initiating government reform. De Jong said he would reduce the size of the cabinet and consolidate the number of ministries from 24 to less than 20, reduce the number of parliamentary secretaries, and cut the premier’s office budget by 10 per cent. Dead on target. Two dozen ministries are not required to run this province, particularly in the light of a $1.7-billion budget deficit this year. The actual savings from those measures may be small in comparison to the overall budget, but the message is the right one. Instead of promising to spend more, this candidate is suggesting practical restraint measures. Ditto with de Jong’s commitment to more accountability from MLAs, who he says should file their expenses every six months, online for all to see, with cabinet ministers providing a similar list of the organizations and individuals they met with. All of these initiatives are long overdue, and should be part of every leadership contender’s platform. ~ Black Press

L OCALLY G LOBAL

Let’s not try to rewrite what’s already been written Last week the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council inflamed music lovers across Canada with its decision that the song Money for Nothing by British rock band Dire Straits (from their 1985 album Brothers in Arms) contravened the Human Rights Clauses of the Canadian Association of Broadcasters’ (CAB) Code of Ethics and Equitable Portrayal Code. Apparently, a year ago, one listener heard the original version of the mega hit song on St. John’s, Newfoundland’s radio CHOZ-FM. That unedited version contains three mentions of the word ‘faggot’ and the listener complained that it was discriminatory toward gay people. Based on that one person’s complaint, the CBSC deemed the song unacceptable for broadcast and that the radio station was in violation of the

codes of ethics. Who are these socially correct commandoes? Whether or not you like Dire Straits or the song in question, the points of reference here are a) does the complaint of only one person justify the ban of a song for 34 million Canadians and Margaret b) why, when this EVANS huge 1985 hit has been played countless thousands of times on public airwaves in the past 26 years, is it an issue now? Money for Nothing was Billboard’s No. 1 single from September 21 to October 5, 1985 and won the 1986 Grammy for Record of the Year and the 1986 American Music Award for

Record of the Year. The irony of this whole thing, so the story goes, is that when songwriter Mark Knopfler wrote the offensive word into the song he did so to make a point against the people who used the word seriously. In fact, the whole song is loaded with the irony of rock singers earning big money for doing next to nothing while the average Joe drudges through a 9-5 day job. It was never written as an anti-gay song. It’s the opposite, mocking those who use a gay slur. OK, so they can edit the word out. But why? There is fundamental danger in editing text, whether lyrics or literature, to fit the comfort zone of today’s sensitivities. The act of editing sanitizes history. It discards the proof of the context in which it was written. It’s no different from the deci-

sion by NewSouth Books in Alabama to publish its upcoming edition of Mark Twain’s classic ‘Adventures of Huckleberry Finn’, by replacing the word ‘nigger’ with ‘slave’. The whole point of keeping these words in the language as written is that they honestly depict the values and beliefs of the past. A 21st century take on the story removes it from being true to the period. Huck Fin, in its original form, is No. 14 in the top 50 banned books of the decade, according to the American Library Association. How shortsighted is that? Twain’s book eerily parallels Knopfler’s lyrics in that they are both misunderstood in the context of the prejudiced attitudes they are criticising. The word ‘faggot’, derived from Old French and Latin, actually means ‘bundle of sticks’ and has

been used since the 16th century. In the 19th century faggot-gatherers, usually elderly widows, gathered firewood for a meagre income. At some time, the word degenerated into a general insult and crossed a line when its historical gender link became a slur against gays. Since the CBSC ban, rock stations across the country have been flaunting Money for Nothing. A Halifax station had a mini-marathon, playing the unedited version on repeat for an hour. It’s wrong that just one person can create all this brouhaha over a hugely successful rock classic. There are many contemporary songs with equally inflammatory words. Are they slated for the ban list on the grunt of just one listener? Scary thought.

Opportunities for new Canadians Re: Are they part of the community? The Chilliwack Progress January 7, 2011 I am writing in response to the letter submitted by Eunice Jasso of Sardis Secondary School regarding the challenges that temporary foreign workers face in the Chilliwack community. The City of Chilliwack is experiencing a growing immigrant population. With economic, political and social pressures in many countries around the world, people are choosing Canada, and Chilliwack, as a place where they can fulfill their dreams. At Chilliwack Community Services, the services we offer to immigrants are made possible through a variety of means, primarily Government of BC contracts. Staff help newcomers learn English and assist them to settle and adjust by completing forms for school, driver’s license and medical cards. They make referrals to local servic-

es and help find housing and employment. They connect isolated immigrant seniors and they work with parents and school age children to make their Canadian school experience successful. The services that Chilliwack Community Services provides are mandated for specific target groups, however, temporary foreign workers is not one of them. Local employers that have recruited temporary foreign workers under current immigration policy have obligations with respect to these workers. Apart from this, I am aware that some churches have stepped forward and are providing spiritual care and English classes and there are some entrepreneurs who are providing business services. The Chilliwack Public Library and Chilliwack Community Services partner on free English conversation classes supported by volunteers that are open to all newcomers, whatever

their status. As you can appreciate, in order to provide services there must be resources. Until such time as policy with regard to temporary foreign workers changes, and/or we have the resources, this agency is unable to extend our services in this direction. At Chilliwack Community Services our mission as an independent local charity is providing opportunities with people to make positive change in their lives. With a view similar to the writer of the letter, our vision is to be a leading partner in helping our community be the best it can be. If community members have ideas for meeting community needs and identifying resources, I invite them to get in touch. I welcome the opportunity for discussion. Struggling students need a break I think the government should help support all students financially. In a time where most of us are unemployed or underemployed (some training and education but no jobs available), what else is there to do but go back to school? Everyone should be encouraged to get more education. I myself am a newlywed; before I got married I took a college course to find a decent paying job. Luckily at the time I had a family member who was willing to help me one time financially. After graduating and going out to the job market there

wasn’t much out there. Most places were word of mouth hiring or were not very nice places to work at. So after two years of working retail and getting hitched I decided, I’m now married and should be able to go back to school. So, like most, I decided to get a student loan, because I now have a mortgage and a husband to feed. Sadly, because I am married and my husband owns his vehicle I don’t qualify for a government student loan. Apparently you are supposed to be broke and not own a thing to get one. I don’t get how anyone is ever suppose to

pay that back then?! I started to ask around and it seemed that most people I knew had the same experience. In 2010 the Olympics were held in Vancouver and hundreds of millions of dollars were spent, close to 900 million. Many people were not happy with the Olympics at all. They were very dissatisfied with the opening ceremonies and several things did not even work out as planned. Now why can’t some of those hundreds of millions of dollars go to help the students in Canada? I was able to take two courses this year and charge them.

My plan was to do the same for 2011. But now somehow it has been approved that you can no longer charge your classes as of January 1st, 2011. And you are charged over $200 in extra fees for a radio station and a U-pass, which I will never use. Can I not get a break? Now I am forced to not be a student and wait until I can save up to pay for a class in full, and UFV only gives you two weeks to pay it. Where is the support from universities and the government to help people get educated?

in the vessel, but he obliged once the driver went back to the shore and returned with Darren, who has a way with animals. Spot was relieved to be back on stable ground. “He was happy. A little bit scared, but happy,” Douglas said. The muddy dog was otherwise in good condition, and was brought to the animal shelter for a much-wanted meal and a solid night’s sleep before being reunited with his family the next day. His first stop after Kit picked him up was at Shirley’s house, where she had a meal of ground beef, vegetables and rice waiting for him. Shirley had been perplexed about what had led Spot to venture towards Chilliwack, rather than his home in Vancouver. Kit had the answer: Spot was born in Chilliwack and was sent from the shelter there to one in Vancouver for adoption when he was a few months old. “So, Spot maybe instinctively went to his birthplace. If only dogs could talk,” Shirley said.

Wet and warm start to 2011 Weekend rainfall in Chilliwack was heavy, but beat no records. However, the mildest January 16th on record was posted as the temperatures soared to 12.8 degrees Celsius or 9.2 degrees above normal. The previous record high for the day - 12.2 degrees - was set in 1974. The low for the day was a record, however - a balmy 8.1 degrees, compared to the “normal” below-zero temperatures.

Liberal hopeful Christy Clark coming to Chilliwack Robert Freeman The Progress B.C. Liberal leadership hopeful Christy Clark is coming to Chilliwack Thursday with a campaign message of rebuilding public trust in government. “Clearly the people are not happy with government over the HST,” Clark campaign spokesman Shane Mills said Monday. He said if Clark wins the leadership, she would move up the HST referendum date, and if the results showed people are “clearly opposed” to the tax, she would call for a free vote in the legislature to kill the tax. Clark, a former MLA and radio talk show host, will hold a “meet and greet” at the Pantry restaurant in Chilliwack starting at 4 p.m. Thursday. The six candidates for the party leadership are campaigning around the province to sign up new members before the Feb. 4 deadline. The members vote on Feb. 26 for a new leader, who will be the B.C. Premier until the next provincial election May 14, 2013. rfreeman@theprogress.com

January is also turning out to be a soggy month in Chilliwack. A total 74.5 mm of rain fell in Chilliwack over a 48-hour period this weekend, bringing the total for the month to 280 mm.

The average is 263.7 mm for the month. City officials said public works crews were “certainly busy” over the weekend, but no “significant” flooding was reported and only the “odd plugged

culvert.” While the rain seemed unending, it was actually coming in waves, which gave the city’s drainage system a chance to clear before the next onslaught of winter rain.

Students cash in on good deed Students raise $5,700 and gain the benefit of helping others Katie Bartel The Progress

ElderCollege, a non-profit society that offers non-credit courses to adults 50 and older, has regularly attracted hundreds of elders to its one-hour registration day. This year’s registration is today from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Landing Sports Centre. JENNA HAUCK/ PROGRESS FILE

School’s in for city’s elders Fancy learning about computers, cell phones, cooking, history, ElderCollege has your ticket Katie Bartel The Progress For Chilliwack’s golden age, registration day at ElderCollege is like the first day of kindergarten. Many line up for hours before the doors open, hopping from one foot to the other, with nervous butterflies fluttering through their bellies. With a list of desired courses grasped tightly in their hands, they wait, hoping, praying for admittance. “There’s a bit of apprehension,” leading up to the start of registration, “because people really want to get into the courses they want,” said Alison Kalnicki, ElderCollege coordinator. “It has all the excitement of the first day of school.” And that excitement is today. ElderCollege registration is from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Landing Sports Centre. Kalnicki expects at least 250 to rush the doors, with the first registrants lined up as early as 1:30 p.m. With 70 volunteers on hand, Kalnicki doesn’t expect hiccups.

ElderCollege is a non-profit society that, in partnership with the University of the Fraser Valley, offers non-credit courses to people 50 years and older. There are no exams, no studying, no grades, no pressure. “It’s inexpensive. It’s fun. It’s a real vibrant group of people,” said Kalnicki. Courses range from cooking, to acting, to learning Spanish, to working a point-andshoot camera, and more. Some classes are six sessions, others are more like a one-day field trip. And often, the biggest draws are the beginner-level computer courses. “Ten years ago it would have still been okay to say you didn’t know how to use a computer, but now, it is so isolating for people not to have access to computers,” said Kalnicki. “There aren’t a lot of places where you can go and slowly learn. Sure anyone can go to the library and use the computers there, but if they don’t know what a mouse is, they’re not going to get very far.” At ElderCollege, “the courses are designed for people who don’t know anything about computers,” said Kalnicki. ElderCollege offers three levels of computer courses for beginners, as well as slightly more advanced courses on how to maintain your computer, create a PowerPoint presentation, and a word processing document. New this year, the college is expanding its technology repertoire to cell phones. It will be offering a one-day tutorial on how to

master cell phones, which can be a source of confusion and frustration for many in the baby boom plus generations. “A lot of older people are being given cell phones as presents,” said Kalnicki. “They can usually figure out how to make a phone call, and they know it does other things, but they don’t know how to do them. And even if someone shows them once, unless it’s written down or they do it every day, it’s hard to remember.” In the tutorial, they’ll learn how to check their voicemail, take a photo, download photos on to the computer, etc. And they’ll be learning from students. ElderCollege is partnering with the school district’s work experience program. High school students will be teaching the adult students. “They’re the experts,” said Kalnicki. “A lot of members may not have contact with the younger generation ... they might have sat next to a teenager on the bus who was playing on his cell phone and thought what is he doing on there. But now, they’re going to know. Now they can sit beside them and play on their cell phones too.” Anyone who can’t make today’s registration, can still register for courses by contacting the ElderCollege office at 604-702-2611. kbartel@theprogress.com

A Christmas fundraising initiative has since turned into community goodwill. A group of students from Unity Christian secondary school spent five days bagging groceries at Superstore, a Chilliwack grocery store that does not bag groceries for its customers. In turn, the students requested a donation for their Belize Service Training Trip happening this spring. They raised $5,700. “Each child raised on average $125 per day, all from donations,” said Mike Campbell, vice principal at Unity Christian. “It is all very awesome.” The fundraiser was organized to help students pay for a week-long trip to Belize in Central America this March. The trip is a service learning trip where 30 students and eight teachers and chaperones will be spending time in an orphanage, helping to build a house, and spending two days at Cayo Christian Academy, a school where Unity Christian hopes to build a partnership with for teacher and student exchanges, pen pals, resource sharing and prayer. The trip is estimated to cost between $50,000 and $60,000, to which the school has already raised approximately $15,000. “I believe our success can be attributed to the community feel of our school and the community feel of Chilliwack,” said Campbell. But the fundraiser was about more than just raising money, it was an opportunity for students to give back. “Our students met a wide range of people, including single mothers and grandparents and were able to be a blessing,” said Campbell. “Families were so appreciative of having their groceries bagged, especially those by themselves doing their big Christmas shop.” The school hopes to continue the efforts. “We would like to continue this service, possibly once a week,” said Campbell. “The difference this time around is that we would not ask for donations, but just do it to help others and continue to build relationships with our greater community.” kbartel@theprogress.com

Start of a new dynasty downtown A new restaurant is bringing the Asian flavours of Vancouver to Chilliwack’s downtown. Dragon Dynasty Asian Cuisine opened just four months ago. But it is already establishing a reputation for fresh and authentic Asian food. Its traditional Chinese ensemble is complemented by Thai and Singapore dishes, providing an exotic addition to Chilliwack’s restaurant scene. “We are trying to bring Vancouver standards to Chilliwack,” says owner John Chen. “So many people are moving here from Vancouver,” he says, and they’re looking for the same variety and commitment to freshness that they remember from there. “We try to keep everything as fresh as possible,” Chen adds. “That’s the way you keep it good.” John Chen, owner of the new Dragon Dynasty restaurant in downtown Chilliwack. Chen and his partner Ben Chen have more than 25 years in the resThat emphasis on freshness and hot and sour soup, to Malaysian shrimp taurant business. They’re familiar authenticity has Chen bringing in with a variety of cooking styles, and their fried rice, to authentic Chinese barbecue ingredients from Vancouver. Indeed, duck. menu reflects that diversity, from Thai

nearly every day supplies are being brought in from Vancouver’s Asian markets. The Dragon Dynasty menu offers a unique addition to Chilliwack: Dim sum. “I was surprised nobody offered dim sum in Chilliwack,” says Chen. Dim sum is a traditional midday Cantonese meal that involves individual portions ordered separately and usually served in bamboo steaming baskets. Dragon Dynasty currently has 12 items on its dim sum menu, starting at $2.99 each. The feedback on the menu addition has been great, Chen says. “People are very excited to see dim sum.” The menu includes favorites like barbecue pork bun, shrimp dumpling, and sticky rice. The 120-seat Dragon Dynasty is located at 46171 Yale Road. It is fully licensed and offers a banquet room that can hold 60 to 70 people. For more information, call 604-7021868.

Topped with fresh vegetables like lettuce and tomato, the sandwich is a wholesome and healthy meal, says Unger. In addition to the beef and chicken donair, the Donair Stop also offers vegetarian donair, or “falafel.” The Donair Stop also has fresh baked

pizza, although that will take a little longer to prepare. And if you can’t make up your mind, Unger even offers a donair pizza. The Donair Stop is at 8-45840 Yale Road. For information, call 604-795-0008.

If you’re hungry and in a hurry, Edward Unger has something that’s a little different from the usual burger and fries. Unger is the owner of the newlyopened Donair Stop in downtown Chilliwack. As the name suggests, the Donair Stop specializes in Donair – a traditional spiced meat dish, served on flatbread. “It’s not fast food,” Unger explains. “It’s a quick food.” Donair draws its origins from the markets of the Mediterranean. Meat, originally lamb but since expanded to beef and chicken, is slow roasted on a rotating spit. The meat is sliced from the spit and served on a flatbread wrap, accompanied with chopped lettuce and vegetables, and served with a special sauce. When Unger was looking for something special to offer in Chilliwack, people suggested donair. “My idea was to bring really good donair to Chilliwack,” Unger says. Unger serves his donair on handmade flat bread that they make each day. He also makes his own sauces, which include the traditional tzatziki sauce as well as the popular “Halifax” sauce.

Bruins take two of three from Cougars Eric J. Welsh, The Progress Glass half empty? Glass half full? On Friday night the Chilliwack Bruins travelled up to Prince George and got rolled by their B.C. division rivals, losing 7-3. Glass half empty. On Saturday night, they rebounded with a solid all-round effort, taking a well-deserved 3-1 decision. Glass half full, and in many ways a microcosm of the Bruins season, one filled with more ups and downs than a kid on a trampoline. “I didn’t think we played very well on Friday, and we weren’t happy about it,” said Bruins coach Marc Habscheid. “The work ethic wasn’t there. We didn’t compete or execute, and it wasn’t just one or two guys. It was a flat effort from pretty much everyone.” Starting netminder Lucas Gore didn’t make it past the first period on Friday, giving up three goals on 19 shots before yielding to backup Braden Gamble. But like the team in front of him, the goalie bounced back nicely on Saturday, earning first star recognition with a 46 save effort. The Bruins opened the scoring at 4:52 of the first period on a gift from Cougar keeper Ty Rimmer. With his team on a power play, the 18-year-old ventured out to play the puck up to a teammate. Instead, he played it onto the stick of Chilliwack’s Ryan Howse, and the Prince George native quickly buried his team-leading 29th of the season. With a bit more

puck-luck, Chilliwack could have had two or three more. Rimmer was bailed out by his goal-posts as Brandon Manning, Brandon Magee and Roman Horak all hit iron in the opening frame. “We had some glorious chances that we didn’t put away, and their goaltender made some outstanding saves,” Habscheid said. “We let them hang around longer than we should have, but the final result was good.” Gore was steady, and often spectacular, at the other end. The Cougars had 14 first period shots, several of the Grade-A variety. The 20-year-old goalie’s biggest stop may have been on Juraj Valach, who swooped in off a faceoff and had a great chance in tight, only to be thwarted by the right leg-pad of Gore. “When he’s on he’s one of the best in the league and makes a huge difference for us,” Habscheid said. “We’d like a bit more consistency from him, and you can say that about just about all our players.” With Gore’s help, Chilliwack escaped to the intermission with the one-goal lead, and then added to it at 12:40 of the middle frame on a goal by Mike Forsyth. The exMoose Jaw Warrior gobbled up a turnover by PG defenceman Cody Carlson and quickly fired from the left faceoff circle, beating Rimmer for his seventh of the year. Still unbeaten this year when leading after two periods (140-0-0), the Bruins were in good shape through 40 minutes. But the Cougars weren’t going to go

LAST MEETING The Bruins have seen a lot of the Cougars lately. Chilliwack downed PG 5-2 on home ice last week, then split a pair of games in Prince George on the weekend. The Bruins lost 7-3 on Friday, but rebounded to win 3-1 on Saturday behind a 46 save effort from goaltender Lucas Gore.

prospect checked back into the lineup on the weekend, and while he’s not yet up to speed, his cannon from the point and ability to quarterback should help immensely. “He’s been out for most of a month and he’s still trying to round his game out,” Habscheid said. “But the power play, over the course of a long season things get a bit predictable. We need to change some things up and take the blinders off to get that power play working again.” Rimmer came to the bench with 63 seconds remaining, but PG couldn’t come up with the equalizer. The final score continued a trend in the season series, with neither team winning two straight in the six head-to-head matchups so far. Gore was an obvious pick as the first star. The second star was

Horak and the third star was Valach. With wins in two of the three back-to-backto-back matches, the Bruins managed to gain some traction in the tightly packed B.C. division and Western conference standings, improving to 20-19-2-1 on the season. That leaves the good guys sitting fourth in the division and eighth in the conference heading into a Tuesday night tilt with Spokane. “They’ve played a real good team game this year,” Habscheid noted. “They work hard and they’ve got a real horse on defence in Jared Cowen. He eats up a lot of minutes and he’s a world-class player. They’ve gotten solid goaltending as well and it will be an interesting game for sure.” Catch a report in Friday’s Progress.

OMMUNITY SPORTS REVIEW

REVIEW

The Reign Valley Vixens have roots in Chilliwack through three founding members and several local players. The roller derby team trains and plays in Abbotsford, providing exercise, comraderie and female empowerment to their members. JOHN VAN PUTTEN/ BLACK PRESS

Exercise and stress release on wheels Over the last few weeks, the Chilliwack Progress has been publishing a series of articles written by Sardis secondary honours english students. Today’s article is written by Grade 10 student reporters Caitlin Reid. She takes an in-depth and intriguing look at an unusual sport and the women who play it.

Caitlin Reid, Student Reporter

Female empowerment is something that the Reign Valley Vixens advocate in their sport and in their daily lives, whether they are waitresses, housewives, lawyers or business owners. The Vixens are a women’s flat-track Roller Derby league that is 100 per cent skater owned and operated. They support and teach one another, getting the most out of their practices as they build themselves up physi-

cally and mentally. They go into everything with a positive, competitive attitude. Their coach, Major (people rarely use their real name in roller derby), gives them encouragement and pushes them to do more with his motto “You get what you give.” He tries to give them the bite they need to succeed. The sport originated in Texas in the 1970’s and since has grown worldwide. “When the sport first came out it was like WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment),” Major said. “It was staged. But now, it’s more aggressive and about the sport itself. Husbands encourage their wives to join to let out all their anger, stress, and frustration.” The Vixens first formed in Abbotsford in November 2007 and since then have become a very successful league. “RVV has been through many trials and tribulations to accomplish what we have to date,” Major noted. “We

started off with just a handful of skaters and have kept a great strong core group of awesome women since the start.” It was formed by three women, one of whom was on Chilliwack’s roller derby team before forming the Vixens. They are now divided up into six teams with new players joining all the time. They have approximately 10 girls that come out from Chilliwack to play for them, with ages ranging from 19 to 40. Vikki Towson (aka Death Trap Diva #77), one of the Vixens most senior members, specified what they are looking for in players. “We want players with the desire to play, and work hard to get what they want out of it,” she said. “Each person will join for their own reasons and desires. I like to see the players come in that are willing to do the work. You need a helmet, mouth guard, aggressive knee and elbow pads, wrist guards,

a pair of quad skates and a great attitude, with an eagerness to learn!” To be a member of the Vixens, you don’t need any special skill; all you need is perseverance, dedication, and determination. “We train people right from scratch and anyone can play this sport,” Towson added. “You just have to want it. Your desire for success must be greater than your fear of failure. So the special skill required is as simple as the desire to succeed as a skater!” At the moment, roller derby is one of the fastest growing sports in British Columbia. According to the Vixens, just in B.C. there are more than 10 leagues that have formed over the last couple years, with each league usually including three teams. The Vixens practice two or three times a week and they have at least one game every month between April and August. They practice at the Cadet

building on Haida drive and they recently held their first public bout at the MSA Arena in Abbotsford. “You go out and play these girls and you feel animosity, but then after you just go out and spend time with them, and you are best friends,” Towson said. Some might think it is costly to be a part of the Vixens, but several members say it’s worth it for the quality exercise and comraderie. “It is less than a monthly gym membership,” Towson noted. “Not only do we get to exercise while on eight wheels, we get to release our daily stresses on our teammates during practice and play. This is extremely healthy due to us all being willing participants in knocking each other around on skates.” The Vixens strive to encourage athleticism, individuality and inclusiveness for all women in the community. There is a fantastic

comradeship amongst the Vixens. They have had teammates in the past go through some troubled times in their own personal lives. Whether it be financial, personal or otherwise, they are always there to help each other. “I do think this is a good sport for women because it is a place where they can be aggressive, supportive, feminine, tough, or whatever they want to be,” said Cara Denham, one of the newer Vixens. “It is also a place for women to have as their own, a place to get away from all of the responsibilities of their normal life (even though it comes with its own set of responsibilities). It is a place to be a leader, to be a teammate, and to be a friend. It is a chance to be a powerful aggressive woman, yet still show off a feminine side.” To learn more about the Reign Valley Vixens, check out their website at www. rvvrd.com.

The Fraser Valley Dragon Boat Club was well represented at the Lotus Icebreaker double hull races, held in Burrard Inlet on the weekend. The top performer was the Pirates outrigger team, placing a strong second in their division with a time of 31 minutes and 16 seconds. The Myriad Mavericks posted a time of 35:39. Thrown together at the last minute, Smells Like the Fraser Valley was impressive with a time of 33:16. This was a good showing for the local teams in their first crack at outrigger canoe racing. Next up for the Pirates will be the March Madness races held in False Creek. The regular dragon boat schedule is set for early March and more information can be found online at www. fvdbc.com.

Cascades come back to beat Pandas

The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s basketball team earned a weekend split with the Canada West leading University of Alberta Pandas. The Cascades edged the Pandas 69-63 Friday night at Abbotsford’s Envision Athletic Centre. It was the first time the Cascades have beaten the Pandas — UFV went 0-4 in previous exhibition and conference action. The Cascades came

out strong, opening with a 9-2 lead before the Pandas roared back. The Albertans held a six point lead at half time. UFV stayed within striking distance as the second half progressed, trailing by five points as the third quarter came to an end. The fourth quarter belonged to the locals as they outscored their opponents by 11 points. UFV held off a late rally by Alberta to clinch their eighth victory of the 2010-11 season. Four Cascades hit double figures in scoring, led by Chilliwack’s Nicole Wierks with a team high 15 points. Winnipeg’s Tessa Klassen added 14 while Sarah Wierks (Chilliwack) and Aieisha Luyken

(Mission) chipped in with 13 each. Sarah Wierks led all Cascades with 12 total rebounds, with UFV pulling down 39 for the game. Klassen and Luyken also record four assists each in the victory. “This was an important win tonight against a very good Alberta team. I thought the team was really committed to the game plan and even when we were down early in the fourth quarter they stayed dedicated to each other, said UFV head coach Al Tuchscherer. “I think it was also important to establish ourselves as more than a three-point shooting team. Alberta took that away from us, and we found other ways to score. Saturday’s rematch

HZ_eVc|d _`e `gVc

wasn’t nearly as pleasant, with the Pandas taking a 70-52 decision. The Cascades led 15-14 after one quarter, but a dismal second quarter left them facing a 35-22 half-time deficit. The Pandas limited UFV to 11 third quarter points, opening up a 20 point lead. “Alberta showed why they came into the weekend as the top team in the Canada West conference, Tuchscherer noted. “They played physical, controlled the pace of the game and really forced us to rush shots on offence. These are the lessons we need to learn if we are going to break through against the league’s best. Klassen led UFV with 18 points with Luyken hitting for 11. The Wierks sisters pulled down five rebounds apiece, but the Cascades were only able to collect 20 total rebounds. UFV returns to action Jan. 28-29, hosting Regina. See www.ufv.ca/athletics for more UFV basketball information.

Chilliwack native Sarah Wierks is turning into a dominant rebounder at the CIS university basketball level. JOHN MORROW/ BLACK PRESS

UFV men earn split The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades men’s basketball team defeated the University of Alberta Golden Bears, 80-69, at the Envision Athletic Centre on Friday. UFV got off to a redhot start and never lost it, leading by seven points after the first quarter. The Cascades played excellent defense all night, holding the Golden Bears to 26 first half points, and only nine second quarter points as they led by nine points at the break. UFV continued to play great defense in the third quarter as the Golden Bears only hit the 40 point mark on the final play of the quarter. UFV had built up an 18 point advantage after the quarter and early in the fourth led by as many as 22 points before Alberta cut into the large lead. The Golden Bears never got any closer than nine points. The Cascades were led by Coquitlam native Sam Freeman, who turned in a game high 26 point performance. Abbotsford’s Joel

Friesen added 23 points and three other Cascades scored seven points each in the victory. James Elliott (Perth, Western Australia) led all Cascades with eight total rebounds as UFV registered 40 for the game. “We have a few guys on our team that can really shoot the ball, and we needed it tonight. Ferguson and Baker are tough checks, and Alberta is a well coached team, and we will need to continue to have our best players step up to the challenge, said UFV head coach Barnaby Craddock. “Sam shot the ball extremely well tonight, and did a good job at the defensive end. Joel managed to make some spectacular plays despite being under the weather. UFV earned an important two points as they chase one of the two final playoff spots in Canada West, but an 84-70 loss in the Saturday night rematch tempered their enthusiasm somewhat. The Cascades host the University of Regina Jan. 28-29 in Abbotsford.
