Dugan Montjoy of Lillooet clomps through thick mud as he competes with his Percheron horses in the walking plow class of the 89th annual Chilliwack Plowing Match on McLeod Road in Rosedale on Saturday. JENNA HAUCK/ PROGRESS

Plot thickens as Bruins drama continues Eric Welsh The Progress While on-the-record confirmation is tenuous at best, several media outlets continue to report that the Chilliwack Bruins have been sold to Victoria interests that include real-estate mogul Graham Lee and RG Properties. A Vancouver radio station reported late Thursday afternoon that Bruins co-owner Moray Keith had confirmed the sale and Vancouver Island based Chek TV reported it as fact on the sports segment of

their news cast that night. Bruins co-owner, Darryl Porter, contradicted those reports that night, sending a text message to Bruins radio play-byplay man Randy Merkley stating that a deal was not done. And all has gone silent since. Keith has not returned phone calls or emails, citing a confidentiality clause. He did, however, send a couple short text messages to The Progress. “Hi Eric. I am bound by a confidentiality agreement. Jim Bond and I continue to support hockey in Chilliwack and are working hard in that direction.”

When asked to confirm or deny reports of a ‘done deal,’ he texted back with “no comment.” Keith’s Bruins co-owner Brian Burke provided some on-the-record fodder Monday morning when a letter from his legal team to Vancouver radio station CKNW ended up online. The letter indicated the WHL is in the process of negotiating the move of another franchise into Chilliwack to replace the Bruins. Going with a worst-case scenario, a Bruins sale and subsequent relocation application

would require approval from the Western Hockey League’s board of governors. The league has gone quiet over the last few days, declining to return calls or emails. But the league has made no secret of its desire to establish operations on the Island, to head off an incursion by the westward-expanding American Hockey League. It is likely the board of governors would give the green light, despite the fact that Keith’s competing bid to buy the Bruins and keep them in Chilliwack is reported to be significantly larger than the bid accepted by Continued: BRUINS/ p5

Grant Ullyot has been a season ticket holder from the beginning, so the red flags were easy for him to see. Every year at this time, the Chilliwack Bruins would be in contact to make sure he was planning to renew his tickets. If he was at all hesitant, their sales staff would reassure him that the on-ice product was getting better, the ticket package was outstanding and he would not regret signing on for another year. And he did. Happily, Ullyot occupied a Grant Ullyot seat at Prospera Centre from Chilliwack’s inaugural season of 2006-07 to this year. But three weeks ago, having heard nothing from the Bruins sales staff, he wandered down to the team’s office to order his 2011-12 tickets. “And he said he wouldn’t take the order,” Ullyot explained. “He said he had to wait until they were printed, and I said, ‘What do you mean? You take the order, you print the tickets and we pick them up before the start of the season.’ And he said, ‘No. It’s going to be a little different this year. I’ll give you a call and let you know.’” Ullyot already had a bad feeling in his stomach from the last home playoff game. Walking out of the arena after a loss to Spokane, he and a friend were talking about next year’s Bruins. Ryan Howse wasn’t going to be back, nor was Brandon Manning. Kevin Sundher was good and Brandon Magee looked promising. “We were having a great conversation when all of a sudden this voice from behind us says, ‘It doesn’t matter Grant, the team’s gone goodbye.’ In the dark I couldn’t see who it was, but once we got into some light I saw it was Clint Hames. That was troubling for me and I’m really teed off now that the ownership group has pulled the plug.” At the time, it was easier to laugh it off and hope for the best. But now, with the sale and relocation of the team to Victoria a virtual certainty, Ullyot is struggling to come to grips with how it happened.

News

John Les urges Rotarians to support HST Robert Freeman The Progress Chilliwack MLA John Les was an early and ardent advocate of the harmonized sales tax, raising the topic in a meeting with B.C. Premier Gordon Campbell soon after the 2009 election. “I won’t take credit for originating the idea with him,” Les told Chilliwack Rotarians at a Friday luncheon, but the MLA said he pointed out to Campbell in that meeting that without the HST, B.C. would soon find itself at a competitive disadvantage with Ontario, which had already introduced the new tax.

In his speech, Les admitted the B.C. Liberal government failed to introduce the HST properly to British Columbians, but he maintained the new tax will benefit the provincial economy, and improve productivity. Although public anger over the HST eventually forced Campbell from office, Les said there are signs the public mood is turning, and the tax may pass the referendum now scheduled for June 24. “But if the HST fails, then we will have some very unpleasant work to do,” he said. First, the province will have to pay back $1.6 billion to the federal government for implement-

ing the HST, and then it will have to find other ways to reduce the provincial deficit, which is “mortgaging the future of our kids,” he said. But financial models show the HST will generate $900 million more in government revenues over the next three years, Les said, not because taxes are higher, but “just because the economy will grow larger.” And with that larger economy, he explained, there will be “more revenue for government to pay for health care and education.” “The HST is about our future economic growth,” he said. “It’s not about how much taxes are

paid, it’s about (where) those taxes are levied … in the process.” Les was named parliamentary secretary to the new Premier, Christy Clark, last month, and appointed to the treasury board and to the governJohn ment’s planning LES and priorities committee. But Les had high praise for the out-going Premier, saying Campbell had “left a tremendous legacy for this province” turn-

ing it from a “have-not” province in 2001 into a “national player again” in 2009. “We have enormous potential here in the province of B.C.,” Les said, it’s location giving it access to the burgeoning markets of China, India and Korea. He said if the B.C. Liberals are re-elected government in the next election, the party would continue its low taxation policies to spur long-term economic growth and reduce the deficit. “But we’re not hell-bent to reduce taxes to the bare minimum and leave a whole bunch of social carnage,” he said. rfreeman@theprogress.com

June, July, August and September will do double-duty as “garden harvest swap” opportunities for local gardeners, as well as “Plant-a-Row produce drop-off” events. “Anyone growing food who has a surplus of veggies can trade and swap, and at the same time we’ll be accepting donations for the Plant A Row program, which will not be swapped.” Volunteers will be washing and weighing the donated produce,

which will then go to the Salvation Army Food Bank program. Anything left from the swap will also go to the food bank. In the meantime, on Saturday, they will start things off with the ‘How to turn a patch of grass into a thriving garden plot’ workshop — rain or shine — April 9, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. in Gwynne Vaughan Park. Seedy Saturday will follow the workshop, where gardeners will be swapping seeds, including heirloom varieties.

Park along side streets Bonavista or Fairview to avoid the bike paths on Williams, advise the organizers. The first 100 gardening fans to arrive on Saturday will receive a free gardenstarter seed kit. and the first 30 families without access to a patch of grass will receive a free cedar planter, soil and seeds. IT’S WHAT MOTIVATES.

As motorists take the curve along Shxwha:y Road going toward Chilliwack Mountain, many have been musing about what the heavy equipment has been up to in the large field. Some locals actually stopped by at the Shxwha:y Village band office in recent weeks to ask officials what was going on. “People are coming in every day,” said Shxwha:y CEO Murray Sam. “What is going on is an environmental cleanup project to cap an old landfill.” The band received funding for the project from the Canada Economic Action Plan, he said. “It’s been in the works for years,” Sam added. “It was just a matter of obtaining the funding to do it.” Consultants Golder and Associates were hired by Hazco Environmental Services to facilitate the cleanup operation. Clay-based material from an adjacent stockpile is being applied about a metredeep at the old landfill site that closed in the 1980s. The environmental work should be wrapped up by mid-June.

Many people dream of transforming a section of their backyard into a thriving food garden. Here’s a chance to finally do it — with renewed purpose. Everyone is invited to learn tricks to successful veggie growing on Saturday afternoon, as master gardener Brian Minter hosts a workshop on soil health at Gwynne Vaughan Park. It’s also an opportunity to launch the Plant A Row/Grow A Row program by Food Matters Chilliwack, where participants will be generously cultivating root vegetables for the local food bank. Expert gardener or novice is not important, only the desire to help. “Growing food for the food bank, how cool is that?” asked Alanna Clempson, Plant a Row/Grow a Row coordinator for Food Matters Chilliwack. “We’re feeding our own community.” The target is root vegetables: beets, onions, potatoes, carrots, squash, turnips and more. The advantage is that they are not as perishable as others, and can sit in the ground for a few extra weeks if need be. “They won’t bolt like the lettuces for example,” said Clempson. Chilliwack is perfect for the Plant A Row program, and it has operated in Chilliwack in the past. “We’re a farming community, with generations of families who know how to grow. There’s better potential for access to land to grow vegetables.” Of course many urban dwellers have lost the art of gardening over the decades. “It’s a life skill everyone should have. People need to know how to grow their own food.” Four sessions in the last week of

Police later found the victim’s purse, but there was no identification inside. “The police are asking the victim of this senseless crime to come forward and speak to them,” Const. the majority stake-holders; Brian Burke, Glen Sather and Porter. Keith’s bid reportedly included major league baseball slugger Justin Morneau and Los Angeles Kings defenceman Willie Mitchell. The car magnate publicly stated in a recent Progress article that he had the capital to out-bid any reasonable bid for the Bruins. “It’s only proper that our partners would take a look at whatever offers are out there,” Keith explained in mid-March. “What we’ve simply said is that if there is an offer and the majority want to sell, then Mr. Bond and I are willing buyers and we will certainly compete at whatever price. Currently, we’re willing to pay substantially more than anything else that’s out there, even from a conjectural point of view.” The loss of the Bruins would leave Keith and business partner Jim Bond without a tenant for their building, Prospera Centre, operated under the Chiefs Development Group banner. Speculation has Keith aggressively pursuing another WHL franchise, with the Prince George Cougars the most likely candidate. After moving from Victoria to Prince George, the Cougars were among the league leaders in attendance in the late 1990’s and early 2,000’s. But crowds have dipped precipitously in the last three years, with the Cougars now averaging close to 2,000 per game. According to the Prince George Citizen, the Cougars signed a new lease agreement in January of 2010, locking them into the CN Centre until 2018. There is a buy-out clause in the contract which would cost whoever moves the team a hefty chunk of change. The Cougars have also applied to host the 2013 Memorial Cup, which would complicate matters. extremely resistant to selling the team, even with its recent troubles. “This team is not for sale, and we’ve made that abundantly clear about a hundred times,” Cougars general manager Dallas Thompson told The Citizen, speaking for owner Rick Brodsky, his father-in-law. “We’re exploring a way to make our business work here and relocation is something we don’t want to have happen and it’s not an option. We want to make this thing work in Prince George and that’s what we’re trying to do. Chilliwack is not an option. We can’t comment about anything that’s going on there.” Meanwhile, local Bruins fans remain resolute in their belief a last-minute solution can be found. R AESIDE

Too many elections? As the acrimonious machinations of federal Parliament spun inevitably into Canada’s third national election campaign in five years, most voters just shrugged their shoulders. Wearied by years of recession and recovery, higher fuel prices, a yo-yoing dollar, escalating international conflicts and maybe even Charlie Sheen’s ranting, they just want the politicians to do their jobs. The politicians are quick to blame each other for the $300 million expense of another election that is as likely as not to end up with the very same or similar result as the previous two minority Conservative governments. In British Columbia, voters face the daunting prospect of as many as three trips to the polls this year—the federal election, municipal elections in November and a possible provincial election if new premier Christy Clark makes good on her pledge to seek an early mandate. We’ll even have a mailin referendum on the HST in June. The people of Egypt, Libya, Yemen, Tunisia, Bahrain and any number of dictatorial states feeling the stirrings of democracy should have such problems. As we whine about campaign signs being erected on public boulevards, or vitriolic attack ads cluttering our TV viewing, Egyptians are still trying to figure out what their successful ouster of their president means to their country and Libyans trying to free themselves from the murderous 42-year reign of Muammar Gaddafi are dodging bullets. For most voters election campaigns are a series of contrived photo opportunities and divisive rhetoric, a test of endurance rather than a celebration of democracy. It’s easy to get cynical about our parliamentary system when it’s all we know. Every time we get the chance to vote, we are given the opportunity to exact change. No international sanctions or no-fly zones required. It’s worth thinking about that when we ponder whether to tune out this federal election. ~ Black Press

L OCALLY G LOBAL

Debates are meant to inform the voters Last week the election campaign took a sideways turn with who should/should not be in a televised debate and whether/ whether not to have a one-on-one face off. It started with the decision by the consortium of broadcasters not to allow Elizabeth May, leader of the Green Party, to participate in the televised debate. Their decision was that only the leaders of the four elected parties – the Conservative Party, the Liberal Party, the NDP and the Bloc Quebecois – would participate. That is, only those parties with elected representatives in Parliament. We had this go-around in the 2008 campaign when the same exclusion happened. Public outrage won May a place at the table. The Liberals supported her, and do now, but it could be bit more of a grunt getting the

nod from the media honchos. In 2008 the Greens at least had one seat in the House, albeit turncoat MP Blair Wilson, who had been a Liberal. The argument against her participation is that the Green Party currently has no elected representative to Parliament. Her counter argument is that the Greens Margaret are running canEVANS didates in all 308 ridings in Canada and in 2008 received almost a million votes making them a party to be taken seriously. May’s argument gets more persuasive given that the Bloc Quebecois, while a federal party, has no candidates outside that province and they are solely devoted to Quebec’s interests.

Read that sovereignty interests. If they can debate, May argues, so should she. And she’s taking the issue to court for the right to do so. The whole idea of having a few closeted media heads decide who to invite to a debate needs an overhaul. The process is too arbitrary. Do you have to have a seat in the house? Must you have a candidate in more than one province? The criteria for coveted arguing rights needs to be better defined and set up well ahead of campaigning. Why not have an independent commission as they do in the U.S. to organize these things, not media people cobbling together debates that their own journalists are reporting on. On the flip side, the danger of debates with too many heads is the boredom factor. The 2008 effort ended up with five people

snapping at each other, desperate for memorable sound bytes to make their point heard, or noticed, and which could at least become campaign fodder until Election Day. But last week, the debate debacle head count came down to the one-on-one factor. Stephen Harper tossed the gauntlet down with the invitation for a debate with Michael Ignatieff, who instantly ran with the challenge. Then Harper wimped out the next day. What’s with that? Rogers and the University of Toronto agreed to host the twosome. Even CBC comedian Rick Mercer said on Twitter he’d happily host the twosome showdown and apparently Ignatieff twittered an “I’m in” response. Harper’s still in back down mode. Maybe debates should be regional. Politics in Canada is pretty fragmented. In Ontario

and the Atlantic provinces voters would expect a scrum between Harper and Ignatieff where there’s a higher conser vative/ liberal presence but maybe western Canada would tune in for a Harper/Layton kick-off given more NDP seats Manitoba west to the coast. Debates need to be focused, clearly informative, and devoid of spats, bad-mouthing and negative criticism. The whole point is to inform the public on policy issues as directly and succinctly as possible. And speaking of informative messaging, the same rule applies to those negative TV/radio commercials. Those message planners in the political war rooms need to get a head’s up on the relationship between offensive ads and the usefulness of the remote.

Capitalists trickling down on us est levels possible as a matter of general practice (I guess we are to assume this is a good thing). And yet, he does believe in miracles! After the market economy and its strongest adherents have proven themselves to be as the main sources of recent global financial disaster, he still want to argue for the market economy and the trickledown effect, as the way for salvation. If the market economy was going to deliver on its promise, it has had ample opportunity to do so. Governments should not be lamenting the cost of health care and education – are we supposed to accept the double standard that the economy is doing fine but we can’t afford anything that matters? The fact that so much retirement funding has been manipulated into the hands of capital

interests illustrates, rather than detracts from the fact that there are competing interests in society. For example, capital interests benefit from warfare, whereas it is hard to argue that the casualties of war have gained anything, except perhaps the peace of death and the exemption from paying taxes. Why doesn’t Fletcher get radical and take up the cause of a sustainable economy based on improving our environment and making a more peaceful world for the generations that follow? What is there to risk? I can assure him we are going to hell in a hand basket on our present course anyway. Canada a military power in the Middle East! What will these lunatics think of next?

think so. At least Harper is cautiously trying to rebuild the economy, tr ying to reform our ridiculous “justice system.” He is not promising billions of dollars as Ignatieff and Layton are promising, or did Ignatieff find the $20 million that the Liberal party “lost”. The cupboard is bare so where do the Oligarchs plan to get this money from? Oh yeah, increase taxes, corporate taxes to let us think the Oligarchs care, this is just a cynical ploy to blind us, the tax payers. What do you think the corporations will do? Doucette’s plan is to bleed the stupid Canadians dr y; then separate anyway. The Oligarchs care ver y little for Canada and even less for the west. We are nothing but cash cows for them, if they cared so much for Canada they would

have tried to co-operate with Harper. True, Harper is spending billions of dollars on prisons and fighter jet planes. We send our young men overseas to fight for us and keep us free and safe we had better provide them with up-todate, decent and safe equipment. You can be sure that Al Quaeda spends top dollar for the best. We want our young men home, alive not in a body bag. Or you and I can discuss Harper’s spending in an Al Quaeda concentration camp. As for the prisons, since our bleeding heart judges make life so comfortable for these miscreants they have to be placed somewhere. Maybe you would take in a “poor” prisoner. Maybe the Oligarchs will take one in. Ever since the Conser vatives got in power there has been a concerted effort by the

Oligarchs to get rid of them. I guess common sense is well and truly dead; which Harper tried to practice. Who’s going to pay for this unwanted election, certainly not the Oligarchs? Since Ignatief f, Doucette, and Layton forced this election, they and their parties should pay for it, not the beleaguered tax payers. Harper has been blamed for everything these selfish, totalitarian spendthrifts could think of, while ignoring theft, cronyism, and illegal patronage that they themselves have indulged in. So here is my question, why did the east, especially Quebec get most of the money and jobs while we out west lost a lot of ours, where oh where is the $20 million the Liberal government “lost”? Harper ‘forced’ into election Re: Election to be bitterly fought, Margaret Evans, Chilliwack Progress, March 29. Yes this is going to be a bitterly fought election, the fourth in seven years. As usual you don’t explain the bitter hatred that the Eastern Oligarchy has for anyone from the West especially a Western prime minister. You accuse Harper of wanting this election, which he was forced into, if anything the Oligarchs decided long before the budget that the government had to come down. Sure Harper would have liked a majority last election; I sincerely hope he gets a landslide majority. Ignatieff can go back to Harvard, Doucette can go to Quebec (by the way what is he doing in federal politics?), and Layton can go back home. That Harper wanted this election, I don’t

Re: That ‘70s political show (B.C. Views, April 1). Tom Fletcher’s column covers quite a range of topics and makes some rather strange assertions. It seems that in his opinion if certain professionals and workers are asking for a pay increase, we are making arguments for a class war and our thinking is stuck in the ‘70s. Perhaps we can’t call it a class war but there sure is a different agenda for those who create their wealth with capital appropriated from the public versus those who work for an honest living. There is a conspicuous lack of comment on Fletcher’s part about politicians voting for large pay raises for themselves, or for other arbitrary taxes raised and inflicted on the public at large. Also, there is no mention of the fact that all businesses set their own incomes to the high-

Adamson eyes NDP nomination for Chilliwack-Hope Dennis Adamson, electoral area director for Yale at the Fraser Valley Regional District, has announced he’s seeking the New Democratic Party’s nomination in the provincial ChilliwackHope riding. Adamson has been an outspoken advocate for residents opposed to “conflict gravel” operations in the region, the same constituency as Chilliwack River Valley resident Glen Thompson is counting on to support

his bid for the NDP nomination. While Thompson has also been an outspoken critic of gravel removal operations, Adamson said he believes that he has the government experience to make a difference as MLA, if he wins the NDP nomination and goes on to take the riding currently held by BC Liberal MLA Barry Penner. “The fact is I’ve had some experience doing the job as electoral area director, with a $13-million budget to look after,” he said. Adamson said he sits on 13 FVRD com-

mittees, including the Hope airport and recreation commissions and the Fraser Valley Treaty Commission, “and I’ve spent the last three years serving the people.” In that time, Adamson said he’s travelled some 34,000 kilometres around the region, and spent

“countless hours” pouring over government documents. A former volunteer firefighter, and member of the Yale Ratepayers’ Association, Adamson said he wasn’t politically active until he ran for election in Area B, but since then he has “taken

the job seriously.” “I’ve made some tough choices, because it was the right thing to do, because it was in the best interests of the people,” he said.

“Victoria once had a good WHL team and they let it go because they couldn’t support it, Ullyot said. “It wasn’t much of an arena that they played in, but there wasn’t much of a following for that team either. So it surprises me that the league would be so willing to accept that team again. I find it rather disheartening to say the least. By choosing to remain silent on the matter the WHL brings their credibility as a league into question. If they can treat Chilliwack in such a cavalier fashion, then other WHL cities need to beware. Ullyot acknowledged Chilliwack’s own failure to draw crowds, a major factor in the league’s willingness to move the

Ullyot is unsure, but if another one set up shop in Chilliwack he knows he would be back in line to support it. “Would I? Definitely, he said without hesitation. “And I’d like to think other people would too. What bothered me was when I read that the team didn’t contribute anything to the community. Are you kidding me? You couldn’t ask for more. They go to schools and read books and all that stuff. Reading that really bothered me.

~ Correction ~ An article that ran in the April 1 edition of The Progress ‘Child care centres struggle to survive’ miscalculated the financial losses to date since full-day kindergarten was implemented. A Is For Apple Daycare is actually losing $300 a month per child, which totals $2,100 a month, and $15,000 to date. The Progress apologizes for any confusion this may have caused.

Make Entertaining the Focal Point of Kitchen Design

It is widely known that improvements to kitchens and bathrooms often reap the greatest return on investment. When making changes to the kitchen, paying attention to the trend of kitchen entertaining can make the room even more valuable -- should a homeowner choose to sell at a later point in time. Gearing renovations around kitchen entertaining also can make the space desireable for current homeowners. Here are some renovation decisions to consider that can make the kitchen an ideal gathering spot for family and friends. * Space: The best kitchens for entertaining are roomy and feature an open floor plan. For homeowners who have limited space, the first decision may be to expand the kitchen by building an extension on the home or taking down a wall. Many homeowners find that spacious eat-inkitchens are preferable over a small kitchen and

* Multiple islands: Instead of one large island, consider two islands. They are less cumbersome, making it easier for guests to easily traverse the kitchen. One island can be set up with a prep sink and wine cooler, while the other can feature a countertop-mounted induction stovetop for convenience and safety. A few tall stools around the back of one island can provide seating while prepping, or for simple conversation. * Company cleanup: Think about large sinks that can accommodate tall pots and pans, such as a double-basin apron sink. Drawer-style dishwashers can be installed so that delicate china and glassware can be washed separately from grimy pots. This segregated style means homeowners can save money by washing smaller loads as needed. * Gathering niche: A butler’s pantry or another alcove equipped with beverage center enables guests to gather in an area away from the main cooking and preparation space.

* Hidden appliances: The kitchen should be decorated according to homeowners’ preferences. Key appliances such as dishwashers, refrigerators and even ovens can be masked with cabinet facing, so they blend right into the rest of the cabinetry. A larger refrigerator with features for entertaining, such as room for platters or bakery cakes, is ideal for the host and hostess. A separate beverage drawer eliminates the need to open the refrigerator repeatedly, plus it’s at a great height for kids looking for juice boxes.

* Breakfast nook: Cozy banquette seating nestled next to a picture window is a great spot for earlymorning coffee or when overnight guests trickle down for a hearty breakfast. Decorative brick or stone -- or even a fireplace next to the nook -completes the warm and fuzzy feel of the area.

* Lighting: Homeowners should consider many different lighting sources. Pendant lights over islands illuminate these work stations. Recessed lighting under cabinets can brighten countertop areas that tend to be dark. A chandelier or bold fixture over the table shows off the amazing meal.

* Large table: Homeowners who do a lot of hosting can benefit from a table that seats many. Purchase a large table or one that can be expanded with a drop-in leaf.

Because the kitchen is such a gathering spot, renovations to this room should reflect how much foot traffic and use the kitchen gets.

SPRING 2011

This saying has adorned wall plaques in many people’s kitchens, and for most individuals the sentiment is quite true. The kitchen tends to be the gathering place for the family. When thinking about renovating the kitchen, it pays to have entertaining in mind.

Successfully Plant Around Your Property Spring is a season for rebirth, and for homeowners, that often means bringing their property back to life. Once the winter weather has subsided, it’s time to head outside and take inventory of the landscape and see how the yard, trees, bushes, and shrubs fared after another long winter. One of the best and most eco-friendly ways to bring your yard back to life is to plant around the property. Planting can be a soothing and enjoyable way to spend some time outdoors in the spring air, and it’s not as difficult as it may seem. When planting around the home this spring, consider the following pointers. * Be aware of depth when planting. It’s common for those who aren’t used to gardening to plant too deeply. The idea of planting deeply seems to be correct, as homeowners want to be certain their plants or trees will take root and it seems like common sense that the deeper the plant is planted, the more likely it is to take root. However, planting depth should mirror the depth the plant was grown in at the nursery. When purchasing a plant at the nursery, ask for the planting depth and be sure not to go any deeper than that when planting the plant on your property. * Stake new trees if necessary. While it’s great to imagine spring as a season of warm sun and extended daylight, in reality, most regions still get some wind and cold throughout spring. This can make planting trees a difficult proposition, as new trees might rock back and forth and struggle to establish new roots. To mitigate any strong winds, stake new trees when planting around the property. Not all new trees need to be staked, but for the ones that do, the stakes will act as a stabilizing force during strong winds, enabling the tree to establish healthy roots for years to come. * Consider container-grown plants. Novice green-thumbers might find it best to go with container-grown plants. Container-grown plants are easy to plant around the property, and it’s also easy to change the look of the property by simply moving the plants around. Also, as the seasons change, it’s easy to reposition the plants so they’re still getting the sun exposure they need to thrive. * Give the trees or plants their best chance to grow. It’s important to survey the property ahead of planting to be certain the plants will be in the best place to thrive. Call the utility company and ask if there are any buried utility lines you’ll want to avoid. Also, a tree’s roots spread far beyond its branches, so be sure to plant the tree in a location that allows for that root growth without jeopardizing the property (i.e., roots spreading beneath the home’s foundation).

Maintain Healthy Soil Through the Season

* Avoid wet soil. When soil is wet, don’t walk or drive over it and keep the kids out of the yard. When wet soil is walked on or driven over, the soil gets packed down, pushing out air and making it more difficult and sometimes impossible for water

* Use compost. Compost can prove very beneficial to soil health. Organic compost is typically loaded with nutrients that, upon maturity, feed the soil and promote soil health. Biodegradable items like grass clippings, leaves and even excess food like apple cores can strengthen the compost. Even worms, which break down compost quickly and add nutrients, can be a valuable addition to organic compost. * Don’t be scared off by slime. Like bacteria, slime has a bad reputation. However, veteran gardeners understand that reputation isn’t warranted. Slime mold is ugly, and many new gardeners see it and instantly assume it’s bad for their garden. However, slime molds are good for the soil, helping break down dead wood and leaves. They might not add aesthetic appeal, but slime molds do serve a practical and important purpose in maintaining healthy soil. * Pests can be an ally to healthy soil. Some garden pests like mites, millipedes and centipedes are incorrectly assumed to be enemies of healthy soil. In fact, such pests can vastly improve soil health. Mites consume dead leaves and additional plant matter, enabling bacteria to more effectively release nutrients into the soil. Millipedes and centipedes are also beneficial to soil, as their droppings improve both the soil’s texture and fertility.

SPRING 2011

* Get the soil tested. When addressing soil health, it’s best to first get the soil tested. A soil test will show which type of soil you have as well as its makeup and structure, and just how good or bad it currently is. Such tests can also reveal if the soil is missing any essential nutrients. Some soil tests can be conducted by novice green-thumbers, while others are best left to the local agricultural bureau. These tests are a good investment, as they will remove the guesswork from fertilizing. Without a soil test, many homeowners end up overdoing it when fertilizing, which can prove a costly mistake. Take a soil sample a few months before you plan to plant or landscape to give yourself enough time to apply the test’s recommendations to your lawn and garden.

* Use well-drained soil. Well-drained soil will dry fast and enable oxygen to reach the root zone, helping build stronger roots as a result. Plants with strong roots are more likely to survive severe weather.

Home & Garden

Of course, such lawns and gardens take time and effort, and a host of factors will determine if a lawn and garden is something homeowners should be proud or ashamed of. One such factor is soil health. Healthy soil helps deliver food and water to plants, allowing them to thrive and add aesthetic appeal to homes. To maintain healthy soil, homeowners should consider the following tips.

to pass through the soil. That makes it hard for roots to grow. Gardeners who plan to plant this gardening season should wait for the soil to dry before planting.

2-11O WP25

A lush lawn and garden is a part of many homeowners’ dream home. A lawn that emanates green and a garden that’s home to succulent vegetables is desirable to homeowners across the country.

It’s got all the trappings of a royal wedding, but without the jet lag and pressures to curtsey just the right way. Dickens Sweets and British Museum, has an invitation that’s almost too good to pass up. You are invited to celebrate the marriage of Prince William of Wales to Catherine Elizabeth Middleton. Invites are limited. For those of you living under a rock, Prince William and Kate Middleton are tying the knot on April 29. And while most in B.C. will be watching the long, drawn-out nuptials on TV, those attending Dickens’ Royal Wedding Celebration will be doing so in high British fashion. On April 30, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Dickens Sweets and British Museum is hosting a delayed screening of the wedding, which will include all the proper trimmings of a real royal wedding: Tea, crumpets, finger sandwiches, semi formal attire, every guest announced at the door, oh yeah, and

a vast selection of Brits and English accents too. “Whether you’re a royalist or not, everyone is going to be watching this wedding,” said Jean Mayer of Dickens. “Prince William is going to be the future king, there is no doubt about that. It is going to be a huge event; how could we not do something?” Dickens Sweets and British Museum is owned by Anne and Fred Hails, who were both born and raised in Britain, and who have a home in Wales just 10 minutes from the young Royals live. The couple, themselves, will be in Wales for the wedding affair. But at home, in Chilliwack, where a large British population resides, they knew they couldn’t just let the event slip away uncelebrated. “We’ve been planning this as soon as we found out,” said Mayer. By the looks of things in the shop, though, it’s as though they’ve been planning it since Prince William was born. There’s pictures of a young Wills, a teenage Wills, Wills with Princess Diana and Prince Charles, William in university, in the military, with his brother Harry, with Kate Middleton, a selection

of Kate in a variety of Brit-flavoured hats, a young Queen Elizabeth after taking the throne, a much older Queen Elizabeth, and even a replica of Kate’s engagement ring, formerly the ring of Princess Di. “I think this is fabulous,” said Mayer. “It’s probably going to be the last time in our lifetime that we will see a king get married.” William and Kate met in their first year at St. Andrews University in 2001 while living in the same hall of residence. For nearly 10 years, Kate, a mere commoner, has been hounded by the paparazzi just like Princess Diana, who also came from “common” roots, once was. When Prince Charles and Princess Di wed in 1981, more than 750 million people watched it on TV, and two million spectators lined the route to the church to get a glimpse of Diana, dressed in a puff ball meringue dress with a 25-foot train. Mayer, then still living in Northern Ireland, still remembers watching the wedding on TV. “You had to watch it,” she said. “Everyone was watching it. It was the wedding of the century.”

Just like how their son’s wedding will be the wedding of the 21st century. “I think actually more people will be watching this one than they did the last one,” said Mayer. They’re going to be watching to see what the bride wears, see the extravagancy of the affair, see who’s on the guest list, and what they wear. “It resonates with so many more people now,” said Mayer. “A lot of people were Diana fans, so even if they’re not royalists, that’s her son – they will be watching this wedding.” The Dickens’ Wedding Celebration being held in Oliver’s Tea Room will entail four hours of refreshments, lunch, afternoon high tea, socializing, door prizes, best dressed prizes, photographers and more. There will be five TV screens all airing the wedding extravaganza. Only 40 tickets are available, 15 of which have already been sold. Tickets are $35 at Dickens Sweets and British Museum. kbartel@theprogress.com

Potential sale saddens first Bruins GM

Season ends in Spokane

Eric J. Welsh,

The Chilliwack Bruins may have played their last game as a Western Hockey league franchise Saturday night, losing 6-4 to Spokane in game five of their first round playoff series. With the prospect of a sale and relocation to Victoria hanging over their heads, the Bruins hit the ice at Spokane’s Veterans Memorial Coliseum trying to avoid elimination. The Chiefs stepped on their throats early, taking a 3-1 lead through 20 minutes. Mitch Holmberg opened the scoring 4:58 in, and Blake Gal added a pair late in the first period. Kevin Sundher got the Bruins goal on a power play, with assists to Brandon Magee and Jamie Crooks. The Chiefs upped the energy in period two, out-shooting Chilliwack 20-7. Holmberg scored his second of the game for the home team, but Robin Soudek and Dylen McKinlay replied for Chilliwack to make it a one-goal game heading to period three. McKinlay’s second of the game 11:14 into the final frame briefly tied the game at 4-4, but Gal restored the lead at 13:05 and Levko Koper added an empty netter to end Chilliwack’s season. On Monday morning, Bruins head coach and general manager Marc Habscheid had time to reflect. “Two games went to overtime and two ended with empty net goals,” he said of the Spokane series. “The guys, for the most part,

The man who helped usher the baby Bruins into the Western Hockey League five seasons ago is disappointed with how things seem to be turning out. Darrell May was the team’s first general manager, his first months on the job spent working from his home with a folding chair and card table. From those surroundings he put together a roster that made the playoffs in their first two seasons, an accomplishment rarely seen from expansion teams. He signed two of the team’s all-time best players, Mark Santorelli and Nick Holden, as free agents and was responsible for recruiting the best player in franchise history when he brought Oscar Moller over from Sweden. Now a scout with the National Hockey League’s Chicago Black Hawks, May is watching this drama unfold with a heavy heart. “I’m disappointed for all the fans and the people of Chilliwack who’ve put their time and effort into supporting the team,” he said. “It bothers me personally because I would have liked to have seen more patience and time for this team to grow into what I think it could have been. But patience is a virtue, I guess.” Through their first two years, May’s Bruins averaged 4,500 fans per game. In year three the on-ice product suffered through a series of unfortunate events. Moller, Santorelli and Holden moved to the pro ranks, Evan Pighin defected to the BCHL and Jadon Potter suf-

to 3.260 per game in 2009-10 before rebounding slightly this year. “If it was just about hanging banners, there’s only one team per year that does that,” May said, questioning those who viewed a struggling team as a reason to stay away. “Winning is the objective for every team, but it’s about being entertained too. The thing about junior hockey is seeing these players come in as kids and progress up the ladder. That’s what it’s all about and I think most Chilliwack hockey fans are savvy enough to appreciate that. I do believe this is a legitimate WHL market and the argument would be

that there are a lot of teams out there drawing a lot worse crowds.” Fallback options have been bandied about, including the possibility of a return of the BCHL. May believes what was once a natural fit would be a tougher sell now. “If it’s all about just winning and having a winner then they could probably do it, but if it’s about the talent level and the game itself, I think that there’s a big difference between the two leagues,” May said when asked if Chilliwack might reembrace junior A hockey. “I hope it works out, because Chilliwack’s a great place and they deserve good hockey.”

brought their game. A lot of them were beatt up pretty bad and theyy still found a way to compete. All in all, we’re disappointed we lost, but that’s how itt goes sometimes.” The entire season was a challenge forr Habscheid. The Bruins were given honourable mention in pre-season national rankings and entered 2010-11 with high hopes. But injuries and inconsistencies left them scratching for a playofff spot with two weeks remaining, and the team never truly lived up to the hype. “Throughout mostt of the season we justt had a lot of ups and downs, and injuries played a huge partt in us not being able to get into synch,” Habscheid said. “When we got guys back, we got our game back. But when you go into the playoffs as a lower seed, you draw a really tough team. That’s what happened to us.” Regardless of where the franchise ends up in 2011-12, we know w 20-year-old veterans Brandon Manning, Jeff Einhorn and Lucas Gore won’t be back. “Brandon has done very well for himselff and he contributed a lot to the franchise and the city,” Habscheid said of his departing captain. “Jeff is a quality person and he was a guy who gave us everything he had on and off the ice. He’ll be successful in whateverr he does. Lucas was a pillar of strength forr us down the stretch, and he’s another quality person who hopefully continues to pursue his pro hockeyy dreams. Yale star signs with Cascades Dan Kinvig, Black Press Sometimes, one play is all it takes to send a high school athlete’s stock into the strato-

sphere. Consider the case of Yale secondary (Abbotsford) basketball star Jordan Blackman. Playing for B.C.’s U-17 team at the national championships in Winnipeg last summer,

he used a game against Ontario as a launching pad – both literally and figuratively – for his post-secondary career. Recalling the moment still brings a smile to his face.

I’m ready to help reduce our carbon footprint in new ways. By investing in biomethane, we turn the everyday waste of farms into not-so-everyday energy. Terasen Gas and FortisBC now share one name — FortisBC. Watch for your natural gas bill from FortisBC. Visit us at fortisbc.com.

The future. We’re ready.

“One of our guards stole the ball, and he passed it ahead to me,” he recounted. “There was just one guy back. I was dribbling down the left side, and he tried to cut me off right at the basket. But I was already in the air, and it was too late. I just went (and dunked) right over top of him.” The huge throwdown sent the crowd into hysterics, and simultaneously expanded Blackman’s recruiting options from local to national. B.C. coaches were already well aware of the 6’5” shooting guard, whose skill set blends explosive athleticism with a smooth stroke from beyond the arc. Suddenly, university coaches from across Canada were courting the hoopster. “He definitely made a name for himself at that tournament,” said University of the Fraser Valley head coach Barnaby Craddock, who coached Blackman on the provincial U-17 team. “It was remarkable. (The dunk) was one of those plays where I knew he’d be recruited by schools across the country.” Blackman weighed offers from programs in B.C. (Trinity Western, SFU, UVic) and Ontario (Toronto, Western Ontario), among others, and also considered spending a year at prep school in North Carolina with an eye on earning an NCAA scholarship. Ultimately, Craddock was able to convince the versatile 18-year-old to stay close to home, and Blackman committed this week to join the UFV Cascades. While Blackman solidifies UFV’s perimeter rotation, the Cascades also figure to have much-improved depth in the post next season. Jasper Moedt and Kyle Grewal are set to return from knee injuries that sidelined them for the entire 2010-11 campaign, and Craddock has added another topnotch big man in former University of Winnipeg centre Mike James. “He’s a 6’6” banger with a really nice post game,” Craddock said of James, who is heading into his fifth and final season of CIS eligibility. “The buzz around our program right now is quite exciting.”

Buying a ‘fixer-upper’ home? Buy wise! Does buying a fixer-upper pay off? What do I need to watch for? A fixer-upper can and will pay off if you go about it in the right way. It can be one of the best investments if you do it correctly. First, know how much time and money you want to spend. A Realtor will give you a market comparison of the prices of other homes in the neighborhood. If prices are the same, it might not be worth fixing up. But, if other homes are higher, then you can upgrade the fixer-upper to meet or even exceed other homes in the area. If you are a do-it-yourself person and you have the time and money, it can be worth your while! Also, if you want a nice home eventually and you do not have a lot to spend, a fixer-upper might be what you need. Look for one with potential. If you are planning a family, be sure it has enough bedrooms. Have an engineer check the foundation and condition of the house including the

answers and estimates. These estimates are usually free but, if not, it may be well worth it. A few hundred spent before may save unexpected thousands afterwards. All in all, a fixer-upper can accomplish two goals. You can find a house with the size and potential value that otherwise would have been out of your range, and what you invest in terms of money and sweat equity will come back to you in appreciation on the value of the real estate you purchase. When the market is extremely active, do not be afraid of making a strong offer to purchase subject to a home inspection to determine that the house and property are sound. If needed repairs can be accomplished over a period of time, the fixer-upper might be your best bet to making a sound investment.

I have been a licensed Realtor in Chilliwack for the past 21 years. I have a previous background of about 40 years in a combination of new home construction, home sales and architectural drafting and design. I served on the Chilliwack Real Estate Board for 2 years as director, 2 years as president and 1 year as past president. As well, I served a 2 year term as a director for British Columbia Real Estate Association. I believe strongly in Realtor professionalism. I believe Realtor professional education is essential in order to serve both Buyer and Seller in a professional manner. I have a long list of satisfied clientele who have now become friends. roof. Figure out how much you want to spend and over how long a period of time. Painting is the least expensive and easiest way to improve any home. A word of caution: there are fixeruppers and there are disasters. The degree and type of work should be related to your budget and then you should add an additional percentage to that budget for an unexpected surprise. If you are a pure hobbyist with unlimited resources, time and talent pool, then go for it. But if your talent pool has a definite “no diving” sign, proceed with caution. Does the fixing up require structural items such as roof, siding or windows, or mechanical items such as furnace or water heater? If so, this can be prohibitively costly and here is where your inspections are crucial. In addition to a qualified professional engineer, hire plumbers, electricians and any other professionals that will give you honest, no nonsense

ps. mark your calendars.... The greatest little YARROW plant sale is coming up April 30th at 9am. Arrive early to get the great savings and selections for your garden. At the Yarrow hall, end of Community Street in Yarrow.

Chilliwack is not my hometown, but it feels like it is. I was born in Tisdale, Saskatchewan and spent most of my growing up on a dairy farm. After graduation I moved to Calgary for 15 years, then my husband was transferred to the coast and we made our home in Surrey. I moved out here as a single mom with my three kids almost 12 years ago. We loved Chilliwack immediately and my family has had a very happy life here. So I feel like I’m well qualified to work with new people coming to the area, as well as those who have been here forever, because I believe in this city. I think I’ve found a little piece of paradise and the wisest people know this to be true. Give me a call anytime for your complimentary market evaluation or if you know someone moving to town, pass along my name, because Chilliwack is my hometown now.
