Casino group willing to put its money on Chilliwack bingo hall Great Canadian Casino wants to buy charity-run association Robert Freeman The Progress The proposed sale of the Chilliwack Bingo Association to the Great Canadian Gaming Corporation has not been approved by either board of the two organizations, Roy Fraser, chairman of the Chilliwack association, said Monday. “It’s a proposal,” he said, adding that he could not comment further because of a confidentiality agreement. But Fraser did say a reported $1.5 million sale price is “ridiculous.” Why the five-acre property the CBA bought on Young Road to build a new community gaming centre was up for sale in the first place remains an unanswered question for now. City council approved building the proposed Chances community gaming centre by a narrow 4-3 vote in September, 2009. Mayor Sharon Gaetz and Coun. Chuck Stam were unavailable for comment Monday. But former city councillor Diane Janzen, now running for federal election in Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon, said she would be “very interested in seeing how exactly” the 55 non-profit organizations that locally managed the Chilliwack bingo hall would be impacted by the proposed sale to the Great Canadian Gaming Corporation. “I strongly supported those organizations, and I want to see them continue to receive funding,” she said, but voted against the gaming centre in 2009.

Letter sparks candidate controversy Robert Freeman The Progress Conser vative candidate Mark Strahl reacted swiftly to media reports that he had “misconstrued” a letter from the Chilliwack Chamber of Commerce as an endorsement of his bid for election. “I did nothing of the sort,” Strahl said in a Thursday news release. “I simply read from a letter that they wrote, which is posted on the Chilliwack Chamber of Commerce’s own website,” he said. “The letter speaks for itself and could not be more clear in

its support of a low tax policy for Canadian businesses.” In an earlier news release, issued after Strahl read the letter at an all-candidates meeting hosted by the chamber, executive director Lisa Caruth said the chamber’s position on federal corporate income tax rates “should not be misread” as an endorsement for any particular candidate or political party. “No information was made available to any candidate prior to the event, with the exception of information the public can find at www.chilliwackchamber. com,” she said. However, she goes on to say that the specific passage read

by Strahl was from a letter sent to his father, former MP Chuck Strahl, on March 2, before the election was called. “Taxation is one of the policy priority areas identified by our membership, therefore a letter to our local MP at the time was relevant and an appropriate action to take,” she said. Dogged from the start of the election campaign by allegations that his nomination was “tainted” by his relationship to the former MP, and by its short duration, Strahl has also been fending off criticism for missing all-candidates meetings in Hope and Chilliwack. The candidate said he missed

both meetings because of “prior campaign commitments.” Last week, Strahl announced he would do a “telephone townhall” meeting Wednesday night, and Liberal candidate Diane Janzen reported she held a similar meeting the same night. Yesterday (Monday), New Democratic candidate Gwen O’Mahony said her party decided not to hold a “telephone townhall” in which calls are made to voters across the ChilliwackFraser Canyon riding. “I don’t think they’re all that effective,” she said. “People are sick to death of telemarketing schemes.” Continued: DEBATE/ p3

Cities outside Vancouver brace for new casino hunt Jeff Nagel Black Press Vancouver city council’s rejection of a 1,500-slot machine destination casino downtown means the spurned developers may soon be placing their bets on other nearby cities. Paragon Gaming president Scott Menke told reporters Tuesday he remains committed to finding a “permanent destination in the Lower Mainland.” That echoed previous comments by B.C. Lottery Corp. CEO Michael Graydon, who said in February

a rejection in Vancouver would “certainly” prompt a look at sites in other Metro Vancouver cities, potentially as far as Abbotsford. “There could be some knocking on our door,” said City of North Vancouver Mayor Darrell Mussatto. “My feeling is that a casino development, especially one that size, would not be successful in this city.” But he said he would not be surprised if the North Shore was considered, noting the BCLC has identified its 175,000 population as the largest in B.C. not yet served by casino facilities.

Port Moody was also mentioned by Graydon earlier this year as a potential host city, but mayor Joe Trasolini said then it wouldn’t fly. Most other cities in Metro Vancouver already have casinos and a new development would compete against the existing facility, cannibalizing the flow of revenue generated for the host city. Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts gave no indication of how she would view a major new casino proposal, if the rejected proponents try their hand in Surrey. Great Canadian Gaming Corp. already runs the Fraser

Downs Racetrack and Casino in Cloverdale. The $500-million proposal was to include 150 gambling tables and two hotels. Tuesday’s defeat in Vancouver comes as a relief to Richmond’s council, which feared a downtown casino on the Canada Line would suck gamblers away from River Rock and reduce the nearly $12-million annual share of revenue the municipality receives. Vancouver councillors cited various concerns, including problem gambling and money laundering, as well as expanded gambling

being out-of-step with their vision for a green, livable city. The most optimistic estimates pointed to Vancouver collecting $14 million and the provincial government taking in $140 million a year from the redeveloped casino, which was to replace the much smaller Edgewater Casino. BCLC estimated Lower Mainland gamblers are capable of spending an additional $300 million a year. Graydon previously said BCLC could also look at expanding existing casinos or community gaming centres to fully exploit that market if the Vancouver site was rejected.

New B.C. leaders prepare to face off Tom Fletcher Black Press VICTORIA – The B.C. legislature reconvenes on Wednesday for a month-long session that is expected to feature the debut of both NDP leader Adrian Dix and Premier Christy Clark. Clark must first win a seat in a May 11 by-election in Vancouver-Point Grey, to fill the vacancy left by former premier Gordon Campbell. If she defeats NDP candidate David

Eby, she would be able to take her seat on the B.C. Liberal front bench a few days before the spring session ends on June 2. Clark has hinted at new family-friendly tax measures that could be tabled in the spring session. One of those could be a promised reduction in the rate of the harmonized sales tax, the fate of which will be decided in a mail-in referendum set for June and July. Finance Minister Keven Falcon has launched a prereferendum program that

includes $500,000 to be split between pro-HST and anti-HST representatives, a household mail-out including arguments from both sides, and a series of public forums held at colleges and universities around B.C. The government will also run an advertising campaign urging voters to keep the HST, thus avoiding costs in the billions to undo it and retaining sales tax rebates directed to low-income households. The government plans to start sending out mail-in ballots in mid-June, and complet-

ed ballots must be received by Elections BC no later than July 22. It will be August before the results are known, and the government knows whether to keep the HST or negotiate an end to it with the federal government. The B.C. Liberal government presented a status-quo budget in February, leaving a substantial portion of expected revenue unallocated. That budget must be debated and passed before the government’s spending authority runs out in July.

The B.C. government will vote “as soon as possible” on a final treaty agreement with the Yale First Nation, Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation Minister Mary Polak said in a telephone interview. She said the legislation is being drafted now for the vote, but “one never knows” if it will appear on the next legislative calendar. Polak said the provincial government is “very excited” about the “strong support” the final agreement received from the Yale people in a March 12 ratification vote. “It really is an opportunity for government and Yale to move ahead into the future,” she said. Sixty-six band members, 68 per cent of the 97 members eligible to cast ballots, voted in favor of the agreement. There are about 150 members in total. Yale Chief Robert Hope said in a news release that the treaty will bring “significant benefits to the Yale people, both economic and political.” He was not available for an interview. The final treaty settlement includes about 1,749 hectares of former Crown lands added to the nation’s boundaries, plus capital transfers of about $8.2 million from the federal government and $2.4 million from the B.C. government. The B.C. government has also signed over a large block of land for economic development, while the treaty is being considered for ratification by federal and provincial governments. Dennis Adamson, Yale area director at the Fraser Valley Regional District, and a member of its treaty advisory committee, said the Yale agreement would benefit everyone in the Fraser Canyon area. “Economically, it’s going to be good for the area,” he said. “Any economic development in the canyon is good for the area.” But not everyone is so happy with the prospective treaty. RCMP Constable Gail Starr is counted among those who are leaving a legacy with their police work. And she’s not even done yet. Starr was thrown a surprise ceremony, honouring the accomplishments she’s made since joining the police force in 1987. A Seabird Island resident growing up, Starr has ended up working back in this area. The ceremony was held in the Seabird school gym, as a way for students to learn about the local role model. “Without people like this, we wouldn’t see Seabird on the map,” Chief Clem Seymour said. “It’s commitment like that gets us where we are today,” he said. Starr started as a “special native constable” in August 1987, as was the usual procedure then. She has worked in New Hazelton but has spent the last 13 years in Sto:lo Territory, with the Upper Fraser Valley First Nation Policing Unit. Colleague Constable Chris Gosselin said that Starr is “leaving a legacy” wherever she works. “It’s in how she carries herself,” he told the large crowd that came to celebrate the event. But the event, held April 14, wasn’t just about Starr, who wasn’t made aware of the event, for fear that her modesty would keep her from attending. Her aunt, Evelyn Peters, was also celebrated. And for the same reasons, she was also not told she would be honoured. Peters was being honoured for her close work with the RCMP and her niece, as Seabird’s cultural worker.

Sto:lo Tribal Council president Clarence Pennier said legal - and political - challenges will be mounted to stop the treaty, which effectively gives control of canyon fisheries to the Yale First Nation. Sto:lo fishermen claim historical ownership of traditional fishing sites in the canyon. Chief Hope has promised to work out access agreements with the Sto:lo, but Pennier is not optimistic. He predicted more tension and confrontations at the fishing sites this summer. “Sixty-six (Yale) people voted in favor against the interests of 3,000 to 4,000 Sto:lo -and that’s not right,” he said. Sto:lo communities in the tribal council have pulled out of treaty talks, while those in the Sto:lo Nation continue treaty negotiations. If ratified by the provincial and federal governments, the Yale treaty will be the third reached under the B.C. treaty process.

DEBATE from Front

Bingo sale agreement still not approved “My position was, and continues to be, I was opposed to the expansion of gambling, Janzen said, because of her concern about the “addiction aspects of gambling. Janzen also said Chilliwack residents were “misinformed about the benefits of the gaming centre, saying the funds raised locally do not stay in the community, but are sent to Victoria where they are allocated according to applications made by the community groups. “The money for local charities does not come locally, it comes from Victoria, she said. Monday’s joint news release issued by the CBA and the Great Canadian Gaming Corporation said the purchase agreement will include the CBA’s existing bingo operation and the five-acre site in Chilliwack. Ross McLeod, Great Canadian’s CEO, said the purchase will give the corporation “an opportunity to service a growing and underserviced market with a “high-quality gaming facility for this municipality.

Fraser said in the news release that the agreement ensures that Chilliwack charities will continue to receive the “millions of dollars raised in the past, but will also “create a significant opportunity for an even greater level of contribution to our community. Great Canadian operates 10 casinos in Canada, including the River Rock casino/ resort in Richmond, two community gaming centres, including one in Maple Ridge, and four racetracks. More information about the Chilliwack gaming centre will be announced on May 12, according to the release.

Bingo hall questions There are more than a few questions stemming from Monday’s announcement regarding the intention by Great Canadian Gaming Corporation to buy the Chilliwack Bingo Association. (See story, front page.) The most obvious is whether or not Chilliwack city council would have approved the CBA’s intent to become a “Community Gaming Centre” back in 2009 if the ultimate owner was going to be Great Canadian. Council approval was granted, but only by a 4-3 vote. And that narrow support was a partial reflection of the unique nature of the Chilliwack Bingo Association. Instead of a single company, the CBA is made up of more than 50 local non-profit organizations. The groups were vocal supporters of the community gaming centre application because they feared the money they gained through the bingo operation (and shared with the community through their organizations) would disappear. They cited the general decline in bingo revenue and competition from larger casinos should they not be permitted to upgrade their bingo hall to a gaming centre that included slot machines. Gambling revenue is divided through a formula that sends part of the proceeds to the province, which keeps some and distributes others to approved community groups across B.C. Another part of the money goes to the bingo hall owners – in Chilliwack’s case the consortium of charities that make up the Chilliwack Bingo Association. How a sale to Great Canadian will affect that formula is just one of the issues that will have to be made more clear in the weeks ahead. The deal has yet to be approved by either group. Because of confidentiality agreements, questions remain unanswered. It is good news that after nearly two years there is movement on an issue that drew past community support. The question is whether or not Chilliwack will ultimately get what it supported two years ago. Greg Knill, Chilliwack Progress

Will the royal wedding revive the monarchy? In three days, Prince William and Kate Middleton will marry in the most celebrated royal event in decades. The wedding is but a day, but will their marriage march right into the crossroads of the monarchy’s future? Dynasties rise and fall and the Windsors are no less vulnerable. In a time of austerity, rising living costs and unemployment, there’s something grating about a birthright that exercises its monied sense of entitlement with deep dips into the U.K.’s public trough. The monarchy’s popularity has been declining in recent decades with many of the younger generation questioning its relevance in a rapidly changing world. While scrapping it is not currently a pressing issue, its value could come down to a cost-effective analysis, especially after the passing of Queen Elizabeth who still

commands the respect and loyalty of the majority of the people. But will her heir Prince Charles have the same magnetism? In a recent poll taken by YouGov for Prosperity magazine, just 13 per cent want the monarchy scrapped compared to 19 per cent five years ago. Margaret And 65 per cent want 86-year-old EVANS Queen Elizabeth to continue as monarch rather than step down. Generally, opinion polls say that republicans make up one-fifth of the population. The division is greater in commonwealth countries. In a May 2010 poll by Angus Reid, 69 per cent of Canadians would like to see a Canadian serving as the

nation’s head of state and 52 per cent support reopening the constitutional debate to replace the monarchy. The immense public affection for Wills and Kate seems to have softened the British attitude but then we’re all suckers for a great romance. Wills and Kate’s relationship has been an ongoing fascination since their university days. After two weary decades of royal scandals, disappointments, blue-blooded meltdowns and the tragedy of Diana’s death, folks are allowing themselves to be cautiously optimistic once more. On Twitter, Facebook and in street talk, the Brits are embracing this wedding as a royal event to enjoy. Truth is, while Brits grumble about royal privileges at the local watering hole, when push comes to shove they’re protective of the royal factor when it comes to

tooting the U.K.’s unique brand and equating it in tourist dollars. The Will and Kate factor is in high economic play right now. Wills, so much like his mom Diana, is a personality centrepiece for the royal clan and Kate coming from hard-working middle class stock has won the hearts of millions. That could be what people love – the idea of a prince marrying a girl whose parents actually work for a living. In that harsh British social hierarchy, she’s known less flatteringly as a ‘commoner’. But that social stigma is being squashed as Kate defines herself with dignity, style and fashion sense. This Middletonia magic is good for the Queen. Of all the royals she alone has never been known to take a misstep. It’s in her DNA to recognize change and embrace it. Having her grandson marry into the working class and

to a girl the public clearly loves is a coup. Keeping with popular movements for change, the British government is considering a review of the ancient and discriminatory rules of royal succession bringing firstborn girls into the line up. It’s been floated that the future of the royal family is wrapped up in this marriage. Failure is not an option. Given how badly three of the Queen’s own children have bombed in their relationships, it illustrates more harshly why this marriage must succeed. Even the pit-bullish tabloids are cautious in the tattling fodder offered the public. This marriage just might be a ver y healthy dose of royal Viagra.

City should have researched sooner Re: Turbulence reported at Chilliwack airport (Chilliwack Progress, April 19) It would be interesting to know how this “City staff” was able to determine how the traffic would double at the airport without knowing anything about the

proposed businesses. This “staff member” also failed to mention that these businesses would create additional tax revenue. An access fee is not included in any leases airport businesses now have with Magnum Management because they are already situated on the

airport proper. The city would have been better off doing some required research on aviation matters back in about 1997 so that they wouldn’t have to spend so many taxpayer dollars on lawyers to navigate through this “uncharted” legal territory today.

Leaders can learn lesson from BQ Recently the Conser vative leader Stephen Harper said a “Conservative majority is the only way to stop Quebec Sovereigntists” basically reopening a debate he would not engage into during the French debate. The Harper government recognized Quebec as a Nation not long ago. He played the separation card to advance his cause in the rest of Canada. I don’t know much. This much we should know about our parliamentary system. A Quebec government lead by the Parti Quebecois will be the only one getting a man-

date to separate, not the Bloc. The Bloc’s participation in the House of Commons will not be the ones who will take Quebec out of the Canadian Federation. If the Bloc had 152 seats then and only then would it have a majority in winning a separation vote in the House of Commons. Everything else is scare tactics by the Conservative leader. The Bloc can only be popular up to 75 seats. Not a very threatening position. The rest of Canada has a majority in the house. The “winning conditions” so-called, will be exercised by Pauline Marois of the Parti

Quebecois in Quebec’s “Assemblee Nationale”. Not the Bloc Quebecois, that much is clear. The HOC would be the recipient of the request to negotiate the separation mandate from the Parti Quebecois. Frankly, ever since the Bloc has been in the HOC 1996 this yardstick has not moved an inch. Parizeau a staunch separatist, and Lucien Bouchard, equally as strong and Rene Levesque all were unable to create the “winning conditions”. The Bloc has delivered what Quebecers want. What is good for Quebec gets voted yes. If it’s not

good for Quebecers is voted against. What the party thinks for itself in voting for or against has not seen the light of day. It is always, what’s in it for Quebecers not what’s in it for the Party or elected representatives. The Bloc looks after its constituency exclusively and not for it’s own interests. Our only wish is that our leaders and representatives were as forthright with a goal we can all agree on. If only, some of our local politicians would be in it for us and not to building a dynasty. Jacques Gratton, Chilliwack

No one should be scared of life I am writing in response to “Youth suicide: A Chilliwack prevention model” (Chilliwack Progress, April 15) to express my concern with teen suicide. I feel it’s important for Chilliwack to have a variety of services because I know there are many teens out there that need help. Furthermore, I feel more cities should be aware of this awful action. I, being a 16 year-old high school student, can see what goes on at school, what goes on Facebook,

and I can easily hear about what text messages are flying around. People can be cruel these days. We were all born into this world with the right to live, and I feel nobody should be so scared of life that they have to take it away from themselves. I know people who have committed suicide and I have seen the trauma the people around them go through, and it’s awful. I feel it’s important for more people to know about suicide, and be aware about warning signs.

For example, some warning signs would be signs of depression or feelings of hopelessness, lack of interest or energy, changes in eating habits, sleep patterns, or personal appearance, and increase in anxiety or anxiety related illnesses. If people are aware of this, then maybe suicide won’t be the second leading cause of death in teenagers.

Returned purse proves Chilliwack’s ‘a fantastic community’ I would like to send out a huge thank you to Stephan Kingsma (hope I got the spelling right) for being a upstanding person in our community. I was in a rush to pickup my son from school and, in the chaos of trying to get my 21-monthold into the car with an

injured shoulder and back, I must have forgot my purse on top of the car. It wasn’t until I got to the school that I noticed it was gone. I phoned home and asked my mom if she could have a look for it. She did a look-around and when she got back home there was a white

van in front of our house. A young man got her attention and sure enough, he had the purse! He assured my mom that he collected what he could find of the contents and that my wallet was there. When I got home I was so incredibly relieved! Everything was there. I

couldn’t believe it! So, Stephan, you have my heartfelt thanks and eternal gratitude. It’s people like yourself that make Chilliwack such a fantastic community to live in. May whatever deity you believe in bless you and your family. Lindsay French

Relay for Life moves indoors Chilliwack Relay For Life’s Volunteer Organizing Committee is counting down the weeks to its seventh annual Chilliwack Relay For Life event at Prospera Centre on Friday, June 3. That’s right, this year Relay For Life is being held at Prospera Centre. With the construction set to begin at Chilliwack Secondary, this year’s event will be held indoors, with teams walking or running around the mezzanine for 12 hours of fun, friendship and fundraising. Entertainment and activities through the night will be taking place from the stage on the lower floor ... and this year organizers can promise it will be warm and dry. “Chilliwack joins over 53 B.C. communities in bringing Relay to life each year, we are a community committed to the fight back against cancer”, says Meghan DenHertog, chair of the organizing committee. “I don’t think there’s anyone of us that doesn’t know someone who has been touched by cancer. On June 3rd, we invite everyone to come out and support our friends, our families, our community. Come, celebrate, remember and fight back against this terrible disease.” “Every step taken and every dollar raised makes it possible for the Canadian Cancer Society to invest in lifesaving cancer research, lead crucial cancer prevention initiatives and deliver caring practical and personal support to people living with cancer,” says Tim Dixon, Chilliwack Relay For Life’s Coordinator. “Together, we continue to make a difference in the lives of Canadians fighting cancer.” The Canadian Cancer

Society’s Chilliwack Relay For Life is a 12-hour, overnight non-competitive community fundraising event that brings teams of colleagues, friends and families together to take turns walking or running indoors at Prospera Centre. Vedder Mountain trails cleanup this Sunday Earn some good karma by lending a hand at the Vedder Mountain Trail Cleanup and Maintenance Day, Sunday May 1. Each year tonnes of garbage and recyclables, which have been illegally dumped on Vedder Mountain roadways, parking areas and trails, are removed. The second half of the day is dedicated to trail maintenance. Without this effort this natural playground – enjoyed by so many – would not exist. Chilliwack Search and Rescue will be on hand to help out and educate volunteers on their role in the community. These people volunteer their own time to come out and help when individuals need it. The association will be accepting donations on the Sunday, so bring a few dollars to show your support. There will also be a mini auction for some awesome prizes, so bring extra cash and you will get some stuff at a great price. All proceeds are used for the ongoing maintenance of the trails. Food and swag will be provided. Purchase a Vedder Mountain Trails Association (VMTA) Membership sticker for $10 (regular price $20) which supports the work of negotiating permanent, sustainable and legal trails for everyone. Those purchasing their VMTA Membership Sticker at

this event will also be entered to win extra-special swag (only available to those purchasing a VMTA membership sticker). Volunteers are asked to meet at 10 a.m. at the first Y on Parmenter Road. Bring your enthusiasm, along with a few friends or family to help out, and a few dollars for the auction and VMTA membership. Volunteers can also bring gloves, shovels, rakes, buckets and other trail building tools (some tools will be provided for those wishing to stay and help with trail maintenance). Saving streams one salmon at a time Mario Bartel Black Press

Oh, !#*&%!! You need Tek Solutions!

Joan Carne, co-founder of Stream of Dreams, even wears her passion for saving fish habitats. Mario Bartel/ Black Press

passed through that busy intersection every day. Carne and Towell, an artist, conceived the idea of a mural of individual salmon swimming along the chainlink fence surrounding the lot. “The creek had died, the corner was looking bad, the neighbourhood was feeling weird, and we wondered what we could do,” says Carne. The mural would not only beautify the corner, it would also remind everyone who saw it that live fish were swimming not far from the concrete ribbons on which they were driving and walking. The folk art installation with a message was an instant success. Nearby Edmonds and 2nd Street community schools wanted their own fish fence. Students at Stoney Creek, Cameron and Lyndhurst elementary schools began painting

more than 1,000 fish for a fence near Lougheed Town Centre, which lies in the Central Valley watershed. Fences went up around New Westminster schools like F.W. Howay, and Lord Tweedsmuir. Community volunteers, like the Burnaby Firefighters Association, were enlisted to cut, sand and prime the plywood fish. Everywhere the fish went, Carne went as well, educating the volunteers and students about the watersheds in which they lived, the hazards to those watersheds, and the things they can do to protect them. “We couldn’t really figure out what it was,” says Carne, as Stream of Dreams became more like a torrent. “Is it community engagement, is it community public art, is it children’s art, is it environmental awareness? But because it’s all

those things wrapped up into one project, it’s magic.” In 2004, Stream of Dreams was recognized with a gold medal at the Canadian Environment Awards. And their idea was spreading, to more than a dozen projects in Burnaby and New Westminster, to Vancouver Island, the suburbs of Calgary and to two conservation authorities in Ontario. To protect the integrity of their concept, Carne and Towell trademarked Stream of Dreams and formed a registered charity. Carne, who’s trained to recognize rock formations and mineral deposits, can now identify every watershed from Vancouver Island to the Interior. Many of the early fences are still up, and the students who worked on them have grown up, some now have children of their own, and at least one has

become a teacher at a school that recently completed its own mural. “There’s a positive continuum,” says Carne. “We’re starting to see some incredible young people really drive the environmental message. People are starting to get the picture and we’re part of it.” But it’s an ongoing struggle. In the years since Stream of Dreams started, Byrne Creek has been killed a few times by spills. At times it can feel like one step forward, two steps back. “We always tell the story about the death of Byrne Creek because this is why we do this,” says Carne. “There are still people who don’t understand.” As Stream of Dreams has grown, managing the project has also become more intensive, keeping Carne from the classrooms as she

The First Lady of Streams is going back to the land. Joan Carne, who co-founded Stream of Dreams with Louise Towell 11 years ago, is leaving the project that has decorated fences around schools throughout the Fraser Valley, including six in Chilliwack, and as far north as Prince George and in Alberta and Ontario with colourful swimming salmon. She’s heading to the Yukon to resume her career as a mapping geologist for the mining industry. She leaves behind 125,000 brightly painted plywood fish created by a like number of school children, teachers and parent volunteers. In Chilliwack, Stream of Dreams salmon line the fences of Sto:lo Alternate, Chance Alternate, Vedder elementary, Cultus Lake elementary, Cheam elementary and Watson elementary. Carne hopes, a legacy that each of those fish represent a growing awareness and stewardship of urban streams and the wildlife that inhabit them. That’s why Stream of Dreams came to be in the first place. Frustrated by spills of paint and toxic chemicals into Burnaby’s Byrne Creek that would instantly undo months and years of work by her Byrne Creek Streamkeepers, of which she was president, Carne knew she had to spread her message to take care around the creek and the storm drains that pour into it beyond her small group of dedicated environmentalists. She had to reach residents who wash their cars in their driveways, sending toxic soapy water down the culverts. She had to remind businesses to take care when disposing of used motor oil and solvents. She had to reach kids who could care for the creek into the future. But first she had to let people know about the creek in the first place. Byrne Creek begins near St. Thomas More secondary, where it flows underground through culverts and pipes for nearly two kilometres. But it gathers its water from much of the Edmonds area. At the heart of that area, at the corner of Kingsway and Edmonds, was a barren, bombedout lot awaiting redevelopment. Thousands of cars and pedestrians

Need anymore proof it’s NHL playoff season? Just take a few minutes to walk through Sports N Stuff. It’s mid-afternoon, and the Chilliwack Mall store is buzzing with activity. Merchandise spills out the entrance, luring in every type of sports fans, from the bandwagonjumpers to the diehards. Right now, as the war between the Canucks and the Blackhawks wages on, the store is a sea of blue, green and white. Owner Rick Lovell looks through a new shipment — he gets them almost everyday — while his wife, Wendy takes care of the steady stream of customers popping by. Jerseys are the hottest item right now, Rick says. And they’ve got sizes for all, including baby jerseys. Up above him, a row of blue

T-shirts lines the wall, each lined with the numbers and names of your favourite Canuck. But the store isn’t just about jersey and T-shirts. The novelty items they carry run the gamut from licensed dental floss, mints and pens to oversized green Canucks thumbs. And while the store supports Vancouver’s team, they also play fair for other sports fans. Rick says they’ve got something for every sports fan, with something from every NHL team. And for those that are anxiously anticipating the start of football season, the Lovells have you covered, too. “We have our Football Day planned already,” he says. This year’s event is August 6, and will include visits and autographs from

three star players from the BC Lions, and three big prize giveaways, including a trip to Vegas, a trip to Calgary, and a set of 2012 Grey Cup tickets with a hotel stay. Rick says the days they get to bring in sports stars are always a hit. A visit from Canuck Alex Burrows drew over 800 people to the store. And while those days are special highlights of owning the business, which they started nine years ago, it’s the day to day visits with their customers that keep them going. At the front counter, Rick opens up their guest book. It’s filled with signatures from around the world. Australia, Scotland, France and the Yukon, to name a few. “People come here from all over the world,” he says. They’re visiting in person, and on their popular web-

understand about water through art.” As Carne embarks on the next phase of her life, she’s satisfied she’s left a positive message, one that makes her smile every time she passes by a Stream of Dreams fence. “When I drive by those murals, I say ‘there’s culture, there’s BC culture,” says Carne. “We are helping bring joy to the doom and gloom movement.”

And while the first Stream of Dreams mural at Kingsway and Edmonds is gone, replaced by a gleaming condo development and a shiny new public library, its spirit carries on with a concrete sculpture of a leaping salmon in the plaza, and a teeming salmon stream embossed into the concrete walkways of the neighbouring Highgate development. “I think we’ve left some kind of mark,” says Towell.

Local boxer bombs Blanco in debut Eric J. Welsh, Black Press Tom McCormick can still remember one punch that caught him good. Halfway through a threeround bout with Richmond’s Andrew Blanco, McCormick dropped his gloves and was rocked by a shot that literally left his eyes rolling in their sockets. “I remember backing up, trying to get my composure and wondering if my eyes were going to stay like that,” he recalled. “They felt all cross-eyed and I saw three of him. I felt like the Cookie Monster. I’ve never been hit that hard.” Welcome to boxing, Mr. McCormick. An under card at the Clash of the Cascade Seven, held March 18 at the Cascades Casino in Langley, the fight was a first for the 24-yearold Chilliwack native, and it didn’t take long for him to learn his first big lesson. Keep those gloves up. “They told me that he (Blanco) was going to come out hard and that he wasn’t that good,” McCormick recalled. “I remember sitting after the first round thinking, ‘Man, this guy’s pretty good.’” If nothing else, Blanco’s punch probably served to settle some nerves. McCormick spent two gruelling months at Chilliwack’s Revolution Martial Arts preparing for the fight. But all the training in the world won’t calm those butterflies as you prepare to step into the ring. “I came out a door, and Blanco was 10 feet away from me. We’re both getting ready to go out and my legs were like Jello,” McCormick recalled. “Before a fight you can feel it all over. But once you get in there and see the guy on the other side you know it’s for real. No more laughing. No more smiling.” McCormick’s coach, Keith Holdsworth, believes you learn a lot about a boxer by watching what they do when they get hit. If they back off and get timid, that’s not good. If they shrug it off and continue fighting, that’s the type of fighter he wants to work with. Not long after taking Blanco’s bomb, McCormick came back with one of his own, a beautiful combo that staggered the Richmond fighter.

Tom McCormick won his boxing debut in mid-March, beating Andrew Blanco at the Cascades Casino in Langley. JENNA HAUCK/ PROGRESS

“It was my right hook, jab, straight left and right hook right in the kisser,” he said with a smile. “I watched it on tape a few times. It’s amazing and I can’t believe it’s me.” The rest of the tape was less spectacular, more clinching and body shots than rights and lefts. By the end of it, McCormick had done just enough to win on points, getting a 3-2 decision from the five ring-side judges. “I could feel Blanco getting tired in the final round, but he kept trying to push the pace, charging forward with his head down,” said McCormick, who works a day job at Fraser Valley Roofing. Watching from the corner, Holdsworth wanted his student to do the same. “He almost lost because he wasn’t pushing the tempo enough,” the veteran boxer and coach said. “I was yelling the whole time for him to get going. In the third round he needed to step it up, and the only reason he won is because he was throwing cleaner punches.” Aggression should come naturally to McCormick, a

man who fights southpaw (left handed) and spent much of his youth brawling in street fights. “When I first moved here (at 15 years old) I was young and dumb. I didn’t know anybody and I wanted to make a name for myself,” he said. “When Blanco hit me it felt like I was back there again. Everything I trained to do felt like it went out the window. I just wanted to hit the guy.” McCormick may have been seeing red, but Holdsworth was seeing a tentative fighter. “He may feel that way, but visually it doesn’t match up,” Holdsworth offered. “He wants to sit back and counter and he paws a lot too. I’m trying to get him to commit to his punches more, because it looks like he’s doing a lot out there, but he’s not really scoring.” If he sticks with boxing, there’s little doubt McCormick will eventually get where he needs to be. The young fighter sat ringside in late January as his coach beat Alex Pippes for the B.C. Combative Sports Association light heavyweight title.

“It was his title fight that got me into it, sitting front row and looking at my girlfriend and saying, ‘This is what I want to do,’” McCormick said, sounding very committed to the sport. “It’s happened so fast since then, and I can’t wait to do it again. Win or lose this is what I’m supposed to do.” Until his next bout, McCormick will continue to hone his technical skills and improve his conditioning. Cardio, in particular, will tell the tale of how far he can go. “My first coach told me anybody can fight, but how long can you fight for,” McCormick said. “Conditioning is huge, and Keith will help me with the other stuff. I’m going to practice more on harnessing my energy the right way, and once I master that I’ll be unstoppable.” ● As he was helping McCormick prepare for his boxing debut, Holdsworth had a fight of his own to worry about, training for a bout with Bisla Boxing’s Hardeep Saran. Scheduled for March 18, the two were to meet for

the Combative Sports B.C. Championship belt. “But about two and a half weeks before the fight he cancelled, saying he had college commitments that were getting in the way of his training,” Holdsworth said. “Combative Sports told him he had to forfeit his title, so he phoned back to say the fight was on. Then, around March 13 his people phoned and said he needed a couple more bouts before fighting me.” Saran was forced to vacate his title. Having invested a lot of time in training, Holdsworth offered to fight the next highest-ranked boxer, only to be rebuffed. “That didn’t leave me with anyone else, because everyone below him didn’t have enough experience to compete with me,” Holdsworth said. “They’re young up-andcomers, and I was in the same boat at one point. But I fought. Not always to the best results, but it made me a better fighter. So it doesn’t hold a lot of water with me to back out of fights because of less experience.” Holdsworth had decided the Saran fight was going to

be his last, and with no one else willing to step into the ring with him, it appears his boxing days may be done. “When I watch the guys who are fighting, I still feel I can compete with them, and if it wasn’t for my daughter (promising young boxer Shalynn Holdsworth), I’d probably keep going,” he said. “But I need to devote more time to coaching, so I’ve fought my last fight.” Holdsworth didn’t sound emphatic as he closed the door Brett Favre-style, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see a comeback in the next year or two. Meanwhile, he hopes Shalynn, McCormick or another young fighter helps him transition fully from boxing to coaching. “It would be easier on me if someone could go on a run and I could coach them and see them going somewhere,” he admitted. “It would be easier for me to accept where I am, because I still feel I can do it, but no one wants to fight me.” Anyone interested in boxing can contact Holdsworth at 604-316-2409 or Revolution Martial Arts at 604-7952972.

tion, curiosity, ambition and talent. They also involve community partners such as Red Cross, hospitals, planned parenthood and the police in classroom activities. The Antiguan students learn to take better care of themselves and others. They learn about the roles they can play as leaders, young citizens, helpers and care providers and they apply what they are learning to decisions about health at home and in the community. Finally, they learn to respect each other, take pride in their work, build knowledge and skills, develop creative solutions to today’s problems and approach the future with optimism. The Cascades will be in Antigua for approximately 10 days, marking their second international voyage under the guidance of head coach Al Tuchscherer. Tuchscherer took the Cascades to China for 17 days in the spring of 2004, making stops in Chegdu and Beijing. “I am looking forward to the post-season trip to Antigua,” Tuchscherer said. The Cascades currently have four Chilliwack natives listed on the roster; Nicole and Sarah Wierks, Courtenay Bartel and Alexa McCarthy. Their team finished the 2010-11 Canada West regular season with a 12-12 record and went on to earn a berth in the Canada West Final Four, sweeping the University of Winnipeg in two straight games to earn a berth in the inaugural CIS Regional National tournament. Get more UFV basketball information online at www.ufv.ca/ athletics. UFV’s men’s basketball team will run an identification camp tomorrow at the Envision Athletic Centre in Abbotsford. Going from 1 to 4 p.m., it is open to those who are serious about playing post-secondary hoops. The cost is $25 per athlete, and participants should bring a reversible jersey or two shirts, light and dark.

Chilliwack FC’s U-18 Gold Attack won a Coastal Cup semifinal match against South Burnaby Metro last weekend, punching their ticket to July’s Provincial B Cup tournament in Penticton. The 3-0 win was the team’s fourth consecutive victory in knockout games, and they are the only Chilliwack team to qualify for provincials this year. The Attack led 1-0 through one half on a goal by striker Cole Ewart, set up by a Justin Stanton cross into the 18-yard box. Starting the second half, midfielder Jeff Janz fed a great pass to Connor MacMillan, who finished the play for a 2-0 lead. Stanton finished the scoring on a breakaway. Chilliwack’s midfield (Branden Klassen, Gerrid Crowe, Justin Williams and Chris VanDer Werff) was dominant and forward Zenow Renaerts caused tons of trouble for the Burnaby defence The defence of Jordan Lam, Patrick Bowie, Kyle Staiger and Ben Ross kept things tidy, and any shots were turned away by keeper Jamie Freeman. The team next plays in the finals of the Coastal Cup on Apr. 30.

Recruiting riches for Cascades basketball Dan Kinvig, Black Press At this point, the University of the Fraser Valley’s women’s basketball recruiting class for 2011 has officially entered “embarrassment of riches” territory. Zoey Haramboure, a standout forward out of Langley’s Brookswood Secondary, became the latest to commit to the Cascades on Tuesday. She’s the sixth member of a recruiting class that already included her high school teammate Sydney Schepikoff, Lauren Sollero of Coquitlam’s Centennial Secondary, and the W.J. Mouat Hawks trio of Kayli Sartori, Katie Brink and Jaslyen Singh. Haramboure had originally committed to the University of Victoria, but she reconsidered after Brian Cheng stepped down as Vikes head coach last week. “This just kind of fell into our lap, no doubt about it,” Cascades head coach Al Tuchscherer enthused. “She sought us out. “I was pretty pleased with our rotation after Jas (Singh) signed. But when this opportunity came around, we had to explore it. We’re really excited she’s coming.” Tuchscherer describes Haramboure as “super-competitive.” She’s also a lights-out shooter – against the Riverside Rapids of Port Coquitlam in January, she knocked down 11 three-pointers en route to a 45-point outing. “We have kids who can shoot it, but she can step in and be one of our better shooters right out of the gate,” said Tuchscherer, who envisions Haramboure slotting in as a small forward. She could also play power forward when the Cascades go with a quicker lineup. Singh, another in the lengthy list of prized recruits, finalized her scholarship two weeks ago. The senior guard helped Abbotsford’s W.J. Mouat Hawks Send scores, statistics and schedules to the Chilliwack Progress sports department by e-mail at sports@theprogress.com or contact sports editor Eric Welsh at 604-7025572.

earn the first B.C. high school AAA basketball crown in school history, earning first team allstar honours along the way. But when asked how she thinks her skill set will translate from high school to Canadian University Sport (CIS) competition, Singh picks her game apart in merciless fashion.

“I can’t say I’m coming in with tons of skill – I have a lot of work to do, because the CIS is a totally different level,” she said. “I’ve got to work on my ballhandling quite a bit. My shooting is decent, but I’ve got to work on it to bring it to the next level. Honestly, I can’t say I’m bringing much, except maybe leadership. I’ve

got a lot of work to do.” If it sounds like Singh is being overly hard on herself, it also illustrates her deep thirst to improve as an athlete, and the passion she has to put in the necessary effort. That’s a big part of what drew Al Tuchscherer to Singh. The UFV women’s basketball coach was

very familiar with the 17-year-old’s game – she’s been a member of the Junior Cascades developmental program the past four summers. “We needed to add depth at that position, and we think Jas is a good one, for sure,” Tuchscherer said. “She had a great senior year.” The necessity of sign-

ing Singh became apparent to Tuchscherer over the second half of the season, as second-year guards Tessa Hart and Alexa McCarthy battled injuries. Hart dealt with a painful case of patella tendonitis that seriously curtailed her practice time and may cause her to redshirt the 2011-12 season to fully heal.

McCarthy had surgery on both knees two weeks ago, and her status for next season is similarly uncertain. Singh’s addition bodes well for an upand-coming UFV team that’s coming off a firstround playoff upset of the Winnipeg Wesmen, and trips to the Canada West Final Four and the CIS East Regional.

HARTMAN Augustus (Gus)

Hartman, Augustus (Gus) passed away peacefully on April 18, 2011 aged 87. He will be lovingly HARTMAN re m e m b e re d by his sons Paul (a doctor in LA, California); Peter (living in Western Australia) and Mary, his wife of 54 years. Gus left Ireland at the age of 17 to eventually join the R.A.F. Aircrew in England and served in WWII. Immigrating to Canada in 1953, Gus joined the R.C.A.F. for 18 years plying his trade in electronics through 10 years with N.A.T.O. in the Republic of Germany and with the UN in the middle East, before retiring and immigrating to Australia with his family to meet his motherin-law and extended family in 1971. Staying 18 years, he met Mary, an RN who nursed and lectured at Murdoch University and hospital for 11 years retiring in 1989 aged 66. Leaving one son, who was born in Australia, while with the UN and the other, finishing his specialty medicine at Yale University, Gus and Mary returned to the Canada they loved in 1989 to stay for good, settling in Chilliwack 14 years ago. His parting will be greatly missed by the many friends and relatives across the world who enjoyed his sense of humor and sincere friendship. He may now have the peace he so justly deserves.
