coach's

comment On behalf of the Chiefs I would like to welcome you to Waikato Stadium tonight for our match against the Highlanders. I would especially like to thank those of you who came to our game against the Crusaders last week. The crowd was simply outstanding and we are grateful for the enthusiastic and vocal support we received. We also appreciated for the second week in a row that the Black Caps finished their match just before we played. It meant we could head into our game knowing they had won. Their timing is impeccable and we wish Brendon McCullum and his team all the best for the rest of the Cricket World Cup. Our team is very grateful for the on-going support we continue to receive and would like to thank our fans, especially our members, our special group of sponsors, our family, Provincial Unions and Stakeholders. There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes to get our team on the field each week and it is important that we acknowledge the contribution that so many people make. It is essential that we put on performances on that field that earn respect and last week our 40-16 win over the Crusaders was a very satisfying one. We did some things really well and improved in some areas that we needed to after our match against the Brumbies. Our goal now is to be consistent and replicate last week’s intensity, execution and set piece week in and week out during this competition. Tonight we face a Highlanders team who are riding high, after their strong win against the Reds. They are a team on the up and have good momentum. They have recruited well and have strong depth, so they are a tough side. They have plenty of x-factor out wide and plenty of self belief. They will be a real handful so it should be an entertaining match. Enjoy the football Tom Coventry | Chiefs Assistant Coach

hosea gear Welcome back

Hosea Gear has returned to New Zealand rugby after a spell with the Honda rugby team in Japan and he is ready to submerge himself back into Super Rugby as a Chief. Choosing to join the Chiefs was a strategic decision by Gear. He has a clear goal to win his first Super Rugby title and wanted to be closer to his Gisborne based family. There is always the desire to get back in the All Blacks but first he knows he needs to focus on cementing a starting position at the Chiefs and having a strong season. One of the initial factors at the Chiefs to strike Gear upon his return to New Zealand and joining his new team is the level of professionalism in the young guys. He is impressed by the way they conduct themselves and the very high level they train at. He already knows quite a few boys from his time in rugby and is enjoying the smooth transition into his new club and being part of the Chiefs family. The youngest of a sporting family, Hosea was exposed to a variety of sports from an early age. His Mum, a school teacher and his Dad, a well know local league referee would always make sure the three kids took part in all sport. Basketball, netball, touch, rugby, swimming and league were all part of the Gear family sporting codes. Hosea was always keen to play rugby with his mates at Elgin Primary School and values the friendships he made through sports at that early age. He first played rugby for Elgin Sport at the age of 5 and was also joined the Gisborne Athletic Club at the same time. He showed early signs of great speed and won multiple trophies and recalls his fastest time for the 100m as peaking at around 11seconds throughout his athletics phase. Continuing to play all sports, Hosea made the Poverty Bay U14’s as a winger while playing for Gisborne Intermediate. At that stage Hosea stopped rugby for two years to concentrate on basketball. His Dad was the manager of a local men’s representative team in the second division so going to training at 6am a few times a week before school rubbed off on him.

He had already been training for the local men’s A team since Intermediate and made the New Zealand U16’s Basketball team. He continued his education at Gisborne Boys High and made the school First XV in sixth form, the U15’s regional team and made the Poverty Bay sevens team. It was in his final year at school that he had to choose which code to pursue and he opted for rugby as he believed it had better opportunities. He would see all the free clothes and gear that his brother Rico would come back from with the New Zealand Sevens team and the Blues so thought rugby would be the one. His sister Juanita was also flying the Gear flag with her impressive sporting talents in many different sports. While at school he was working in the cornfields and bought a car stereo with his first pay cheque for his Mum’s car. His rugby continued to progress and he made the Hurricanes Secondary Schools and the New Zealand U19’s and U21’s with fellow Chiefs Liam Messam and Jamie Mackintosh. When he was presented with his first black jersey Hosea recalls he thought to himself “Far out – all the hard work has got me here.” He was invited on New Zealand Sevens camp but was injured. He did get the call up by Sir Gordan

Tietjens to play in the last two tournaments on the circuit in 2003 and got to play with his idol Eric Rush in Wales and England. “It was pretty exciting to run next to Eric Rush,” said the 30 year old. Upon his returned to New Zealand he moved to North Harbour to join his brother Rico and went into their Academy with Troy Flavell, Luke McAlistair and Nick Evans. He worked with Chiefs Assistant Coach Andrew Strawbridge who at that time was the NPC Assistant Coach. In 2004 he was drafted into the Hurricanes by Colin Cooper and played under captain former Chief and

“It was an awesome feeling and meant that we had two golds in the family as Rico had won one too for sevens but we didn’t really get a chance to celebrate as we were on the plane home to get back for rugby.”

All Blacks captain Tana Umaga. It was also his first year with the New Zealand Maori side where he has been a regular member alongside Chiefs centurion Tanerau Latimer and Hika Elliot.

He scored a record 14 tries for the Wellington Lions in 2008, making him the Air New Zealand Cup’s top try scorer. During his time at Wellington he got to share the joy of winning the Ranfurly Shield in 2008 with Wellington when they beat Auckland. “It was a wicked feeling and great to win it with the older boys like Piri Weepu, Chris Masoe, Tamati Ellison, Ma’a Nonu and Ross Filipo.”

the World Cup, Hosea was called into the side and was rapt to be joining his All Blacks friends. He didn’t actually take the field but enjoyed being part of the experience. Needing a fresh start and not ready to go overseas, Gear headed to the Highlanders in 2012 to continue his relationship with Jamie Joseph who had been part of the coaching team when he played in the New Zealand Maoris and Wellington Lions.

On the back of a strong 2008 ITM Cup campaign he was called into the All Blacks by Graham Henry and Wayne Smith, making his debut in Hong Kong where the All Blacks beat Australia 19-14.

Deciding it was time for a break from New Zealand rugby the Gear clan headed to Toulouse France where Hosea started covering centre and wing. He

Hosea describes running through the tunnel in his All Blacksjersey for the first time as quite ‘surreal’. He spent the next few years in and out of the side.

“It was a wicked feeling and great to win it with the older boys like Piri Weepu, Chris Masoe, Tamati Ellison, Ma’a Nonu and Ross Filipo.”

During that time in 2010 he made the Commonwealth Games Sevens team and won gold at Delhi with Liam Messam. “It was an awesome feeling and meant that we had two golds in the family as Rico had won one too for sevens but we didn’t really get a chance to celebrate as we were on the plane home to get back for rugby.” The following year was set to be a year of highs and lows for the hands-on-Dad with September proving to be the biggest month of his life. He had missed out on 2011 World Cup selection but he and his partner Kate had twins in September which expanded their family to three. During that month when former Chiefs captain and All Blacks centurion Mils Muliana was injured during

loved France but moved to Japan the following year where he found the rugby to be less physical. “They train more but play less.” said Gear. Hungry to win his first Investec Super Rugby title and with the possibility of getting a crack at the Rugby World Cup and the Olympics in Rio Hosea knows it is an exciting time to be a rugby player in New Zealand.

macdonald gears up

for big 2015

It hasn’t taken long but Chiefs hooker Quentin MacDonald looks to have settled in quite well to his new surroundings. Following a brief spell playing for European giants Munster last season as injury cover, MacDonald brings his playing experience to a Chiefs outfit aspiring to reach the summit of the Super Rugby mountain again. “The environment is awesome. It’s true what they say, we [Chiefs] do have a good thing going on here,” the 26 year old said. “I’m just trying to fit in and get to be a part of it and add a bit of input so it’s going real well. Training is going well and hopefully it bodes for a good season ahead.” Since his debut with the Crusaders back in 2010, and a stint with the Blues in 2013, MacDonald is amped at the prospect of turning out for his fifth season of Super Rugby with the Chiefs in 2015. Although the former Maori All Black remains grateful to have been a part of the Crusaders set up, he admits there is more of a family feel here with the Chiefs club which has given him a fresh outlook on his footy and he aims to flourish here in his new team. “Once you get into the [Chiefs] environment you kind of get that family feel and you kind of realise it’s just a different outlook – it’s more family orientated. “The boys work hard for each other, and you can see that through all the trainings and stuff we’ve been doing so I mean that’s kind of opened my eyes a bit. “It’s just good to meet all the new boys and the coaching staff, they’re awesome as well. It’s just

a good chance personally for myself to hopefully thrive in this environment and give it a good crack.” For MacDonald, who is an avid follower of the Ultimate Fighter Championship, he insists the passion for the game remains as does his desire to one day wear the black jersey. But his love for the game has stemmed from his days playing for Marlborough Boys’ College first XV and the Central club back in Blenheim where he recalls a few special moments. It was there at Central RFU where he flashed back to one of his fonder memories when he, his father Paul and brother Jesse played together in a club final and managed to claim the top prize in the Marlborough competition. However in 2015, MacDonald is intent on creating further highlights heading into the Super Rugby season with his new side.

“I’m just trying to fit in and get to be a part of it and add a bit of input so it’s going real well. Training is going well and hopefully it bodes for a good season ahead.”

MacDonald hasn’t placed any massive expectations on himself but insists he is fully focused on this season and with the high level of competition within the squad - in particular in the hooker position - he’s aiming to contribute as much as can, both on and off the field. “I’m looking to try and have a real big campaign with the Chiefs just wherever I can on or off the field, just try and contribute as best and the most I can,” he says with the hope that if he can perform at a high level then things should begin to take care of itself. But rest assured he is aware that nothing is certain in terms of playing time but the one thing that he is convinced of is he’ll be going out to ‘work hard, play hard’ at every chance. It’s not just on the rugby field that MacDonald is finding his feet again. He believes having a school of Tasman Makos in the Chiefs squad, has helped with the move to Hamilton. Currently flatting with Chiefs teammates Bryce Heem and Tevita Koloamatagi, he confesses he is adjusting nicely to life in Chiefs country. He says he has been introduced to some of the area’s beautiful spots like Waihi and Raglan, and has even had a taste of the restaurants around Hamilton. And having adapted well to things at the Ruakura based club, MacDonald can now turn his attention squarely on competitively challenging his fellow Chiefs brothers for the all important number 2 jersey.
