Englewood’s Earle STEM Chess Club Heads to Nationals Earle STEM Academy’s Chess Club is heading to another national tournament. The team - which burst onto the national chess scene in 2016 with less than a dozen members, then went on to make history at other Chicago Public Schools and state tournaments in 2017 – has grown to 50 members; five of whom will represent the school in the National K-12 grade Chess Tournament in Orlando this week. “While I’m proud that our previous year’s teams and successes have made the game of chess appealing to a larger pool of our students, this is more about building character, discipline, confidence and other life skills,” said Joseph Ocol, the school’s math teacher and chess coach. “Every chess piece and game move correlates to an aspect of life - from development from pawn to queen, to careful consideration of your next move and its good or bad consequences.” The team recently received $5,500 from One Chicago Fund to support its growth.

As the old year ends and a new year begins, so does the leadership at Third Baptist Church of Chicago. Throughout 2018, Senior Pastor Rev. Dr. Alan Vincent Ragland has worked to pass on the mantle to Reverend Tyone Hughes. Ragland’s last day as pastor was November 11 and he continues to help with the transition through the end of the year. “God is doing a new thing in my life and the life of Third Baptist Church of Chicago, and the church is poised to take the next step of legacy building for the community and the Kingdom,” said Ragland. Dr. Ragland honors the legacy of those who have come before him and those who will come after him at Third Baptist Church of Chicago. It is this gracious mentoring spirit that welcomes Rev. Hughes as the Senior Pastor-Elect. “The African principle of Sankofa teaches us to look back, honoring our past, as we move forward, engaging the future,” said Ragland. “As a congregation with a rich 55-year history with two pastoral leaders, may this ‘third season’ under new pastoral leadership, be anchored in the wisdom of our previous days, and ready us for the coming of fresh new days.” “I am honored and grateful to have Dr. Ragland as an amazing mentor and friend,” stated Hughes. “The journey of this church’s history has been guided by God, and the future will be no different. I proudly stand on the foundational work of Rev. Fowler [the founding pastor] and Dr. Ragland, and I know that wherever The Lord leads me as the new Senior Pastor, I will work to ensure that Third Baptist Church of Chicago follows.” THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

Creating New Holiday Traditions By Sharice Bradford Defender Contributing Writer The holidays can be a time of great fun and excitement--the anticipation of spending time with loved ones, the gift giving and receiving and of course the food. For many families, the holidays play out like a well-written script: you know what is going to be on the dinner table, who will be notoriously late to the family gathering, who may show up with the unexpected or uninvited guest and even who will be at the center of the family drama. It is almost as if Tyler Perry or Will Packer casted and wrote the script that gets replayed year after year. So, I am suggesting that you begin to shake things up this holiday season. Who says that you MUST follow the same script and do the same thing year after year, holiday after holiday; here are a few suggestions to shake up the holiday tradition and make some new memories. 1. Change the menu. The reality is that in most families we have the same dinner for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Some families even repeat the menu for New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day. What if you did something different this year? What about a seafood dinner instead of the regular turkey, ham, mac and cheese, greens, potato salad, cornbread, dressing or stuffing, rolls and cranberry sauce? What about a seafood boil? That would be a

change. Or what about changing the meat selection? One year my aunt decided that we would have prime rib instead of turkey and it was a hit. Just switching up the menu can be a great way to create a new holiday tradition and break up the monotony of the same meals during the holiday season. 2. Volunteer as a family. Many people do this, but you and your family can too. Either before or after your family meal, volunteer to help feed families at a shelter or community center. Make a large batch of hot chocolate and some Christmas cookies and spend an hour or two spread-

ing joy to the homeless. Giving back is one of the reasons for the season and what better way to give back than by helping those less fortunate. 3. Get active as a family. I can recall many holidays where I ate until I couldn’t move. Then what did I do, I sat around the house or we watched a movie or played the family game of bid whist. Why not get together and go for a walk around the block or at the local park. What a great way to work off that delicious meal while getting a jump start on those New Year’s weight loss resolutions we all make. You don’t have to wait

until January 1, you can start today. 4. Only purchase gifts from small business or Black owned Business. (See story on pgs 3 and 4) What better way to help small business owners stay in business and to support individuals who don’t have the large advertising budgets like Target or Macy’s. Seek out local boutiques and shop owners who have wonderful items for everyone on your gift list. Most small businesses can accommodate any budget so don’t think that items will be ridiculously expensive. You can often get more from your money at a small-owned

business than you can from a larger store. 5. Celebrate without gifts or delay gift giving. This may be a difficult choice for most people. However here are a few options. Take the money you would normally spend on the children in your family and open a bank account or purchase a few shares of stock for them. Put the money you would have spent on Christmas into a short-term savings account and plan a family trip for next Christmas. You would have a year to add to what you saved by not purchasing presents this year. Or if you are a serious shopper like I am, you can stock up the week after Christmas where all of the items you spend large amounts of money on go on sale for fractions of the original price. You can purchase everything from expensive gift sets to Christmas cards for 70-90 percent off if you simply wait. So why not exchange gifts on New Year’s Eve or celebrate Kwanzaa while at the same time saving a great deal of money. Whatever you choose to do, the holidays are ultimately a season of good cheer, time spent with those you love and maybe those who you haven’t seen in a while. However you choose to spend your holiday, whether it is with your same family traditions or with a new tradition, make it a happy and safe one! Happy Holidays! Politics Mayoral Candidate Interview: Garry McCarthy By Charles Preston Defender Contributing Writer It’s a safe assumption that the name “Garry McCarthy” currently doesn’t resonate well with Chicago’s Black communities. For about a half-decade, the Chicago Police Department has faced a new movement demanding for police accountability and criticizing its daily practices. Even last year’s scathing report from the U.S. Department of Justice cited CPD’s “racist and abusive behaviors” due to “systemic and cultural failings.” McCarthy, the previous CPD Superintendent, became a central figure targeted by protests, especially during the height of the Laquan McDonald video release. When cries for transformative change reached the 5th floor of City Hall, Mayor Rahm Emanuel fired McCarthy in December 2015 and selected Supt. Eddie Johnson as his replacement. Now, McCarthy eyes the very mayoral seat responsible for his termination. After being the self-described “scapegoat” for Chicago’s corrupt politics, adding the title of Mayor of Chicago would not only be an interesting turn of events for the city but a personal karmic justice for McCarthy against the machine politics he believes he fell victim to. “Chicago chose me,” says McCarthy. “I’m not being facetious. I’ve never chosen my path. I got recruited to become superintendent and we all know how that ended.” A big concern of McCarthy’s in the mayoral race is history –– which is also the subject in which he earned his bachelor’s degree from SUNY. McCarthy wants to inform voters on who he is, what he was responsible for as superintendent, and how his life experiences have prepared him to handle city hall’s most coveted seat. For starters, he is 59 years old and happily married to 39-year-old current President of the Illinois Bar Association Kristen McCarthy. The couple parent a 2-year-old child in their River North home. McCarthy is a New Yorker –– born and raised –– and it’s easily identifiable when he speaks. Additionally, as a teen, McCarthy learned how to fluently speak Spanish after frequently visiting the home of one of his Puerto Rican best friends. “It comes in handy being a White guy,” he jokes. But the former CPD superintendent details his resume as the prime reason he should be MayTHE CHICAGO DEFENDER

Garry McCarthy or of Chicago, having sat next to some of the nation’s Democratic and Republican mayoral elite as a police leader. “Because I’ve run some of the largest police departments in the country, I’ve been at the top of city government in three major cities for 17 years,” he states. “I sat at the right-hand of Bloomberg, Giuliani, [both in New York] Booker [Newark, NJ], and Emanuel. I learned from all of them. –– what to do and what not to do.” He holds the highest contempt for Rahm Emanuel calling him “... the most treacherous individual I have ever met in my life [who]... makes every decision on what is best for him.” Of course, there is bad blood between the two due to history, but McCarthy legitimately concludes that Mayor Emanuel has ineffectively chaired the city. However, the inciting event that pushed McCarthy to action was the murder of CPD Commander

Paul Bauer. “The straw that broke the camel’s back was Paul Bauer getting murdered by a four-time convicted felon, in the shadow of city hall, in the middle of the afternoon,” McCarthy somberly recalls. “That was it.” McCarthy personally knew Commander Paul Bauer; he promoted him. He promises to raise his own child in a city where the child would not witness another cop killed in that fashion. But what does Garry McCarthy want to do for Black Chicagoans, especially those negatively impacted by police like Laquan McDonald, Rekia Boyd, or Ronald Johnson? Well, it’s complicated but he does know his criticisms. McCarthy points his finger at the Chicago Police Board as preventing accountability during the time in which his name was associated with police brutality. Interestingly enough, he is competing www.chicagodefender.com

against former Chicago Police Board President Lori Lightfoot in this mayoral race. “They [the Police Board] overturned 75 percent of my recommendations to fire police officers,” says McCarthy. “I’m a very principled person. I worked for Internal Affairs in New York and arrested police officers. I’ll do it again.” McCarthy rebuffs a Chicago Magazine exposé that accused his department of juking the numbers by categorizing homicides as “non-criminal” deaths. He calls it “bullshit.” “You want a great journalism project? Take that article and dissect it,” says McCarthy. “Look at where those cases are today. You will see that it was complete bullshit.” If elected mayor, McCarthy promises to address the constant divestment in the South and West sides of the city. “We’re the third largest city in the country; we’re about to be-

come the fifth because people are leaving –– actually middle-class African-Americans are leaving because of gun violence and high taxes.” McCarthy thinks that the decreasing population fuels the pulling of community schools and social services in the neighborhoods where they are a necessity. What makes McCarthy’s policy positions interesting –– and probably surprising to some –– is that many of them echo the organizations and activists who were routinely arrested for protesting. He cites socioeconomic conditions as the fundamental reason for protests under Rahm’s administration. In education, his campaign website calls on the reinvestment of community schools and special education, and a new partially-elected school board. He has stated that he would reopen the city’s mental health clinics that Mayor Emanuel closed. Perhaps the biggest shocker is that McCarthy opposes the current proposed $95 million cop academy on Chicago’s West Side. “That’s a $180 million issue, not $95 million because nothing gets done on time around the budget,” McCarthy said emphatically. “I’m absolutely against it. That is a bright shiny object to say that Chicago is all about police reform and that’s nonsense. The building does not do the training, the trainers do the training with a program.” The cheaper alternative, says McCarthy, is for the city to assume the $1 vacant lots and use them as CPD training grounds. He also promises that protests won’t be as frequent during his mayoral tenure compared to Mayor Emanuel’s because he is willing to have tough conversations with “friends and foes.” “Access. It’s that simple,” declares McCarthy. “I’m not going to be sitting in the chair. I’m going to be out here. People shut down the Dan Ryan and Lake Shore Drive because they didn’t have access to the mayor. My administration will be inclusive, but you better be ready for frank conversation.” But the most important promise Garry McCarthy is making to the Black community is safety: “I’m going to save Black people from dying,” he says. “That’s the big picture: Fundamental fairness for everybody and a recognition of the root causes that got us here. But I’m going to stop Black people from dying.” December 19 - 25, 2018 5

Community The Hatchery Offers Support for West Side Entrepreneurs By Deborah Bayliss Defender Contributing Writer Garfield Park resident and homeowner Trinisa Williams is preparing for her future by taking advantage of an entrepreneurial opportunity being offered in her neighborhood that will help expand her pastry business. Owner of Trini’s Tasty Pastries, a bakery she runs out of her home, Williams is now a member of The Hatchery, a $34 million food and beverage incubation center that launched recently in East Garfield Park with the goal of providing affordable space, training and other support to help local food entrepreneurs launch and develop their businesses. “I found out about the Hatchery and became a member while volunteering as a demonstration chef for the Garfield Park Neighborhood Market,” said Williams, who has a culinary degree and is working on a food science degree. When she’s not rolling dough, she brings in the “dough” by way of her day job with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. “My pastry business is a side

Trinisa Williams job for now,” Williams said. “I’m looking at it as a preparation for retirement. The Hatchery is an incredible opportunity especially for those who cannot afford business school. It’s a free opportunity. I wish it was something I had access to when I was younger.” Williams also would like to fill the void she said exists in Garfield Park as there are no bakeries in East Garfield Park, a predominantly African-American community that has undergone a steady gentrifying pace over the years. Concerns have been expressed as to whether enough Af-

rican-Americans and other people of color will have equal access to the program. Considering the program also extends to Austin and Humboldt residents, Williams said she’s not seeing enough African-American participation in the program. A partnership between local nonprofits Accion Chicago and the Industrial Council of Nearwest Chicago (ICNC), the Hatchery Chicago is made possible with the support of a long list of donors, investors, lenders, sponsors, and partners and will also house Accion Chicago’s micro lending, two

workforce development initiatives, and the Garfield Park Neighborhood Market. “The Hatchery will create new jobs, support local entrepreneurs and strengthen Chicago’s position at the forefront of the food industry,” Mayor Rahm Emanuel said in a press release. “Even more importantly, this facility will extend the success of Chicago’s thriving food industry directly into our neighborhoods and drive future economic growth on the West Side.” The 67,000-square-foot facility, located on the southeast corner of Lake Street and Kedzie Avenue near the Kedzie Green Line station, provides all the necessary facilities and amenities to meet the needs of a wide variety of emerging food and beverage production businesses, including: 54 private foodgrade kitchens, 5 shared kitchen bays, dry-cold storage, loading docks for distribution and food trucks, and open office space. “It is our goal to reduce barriers and provide every opportunity available to each entrepreneur who walks through these doors. The American dream is very real, and it will continue to thrive within these walls,” said Natalie Shmulik,

CEO, The Hatchery Chicago. In addition to kitchen production space, The Hatchery will offer a full suite of business incubation services to support small business owners and host networking events, classes, and other local functions that will be open to the public. The new facility will also provide training to West Side job seekers who want to work for the entrepreneurs who create jobs in the kitchens. In addition, Chicago Chef Rick Bayless will partner with Accion and ICNC to create a chef-training program that will provide life and knife skills for cohorts of young West Side residents who wish to cook in Chicago’s best kitchens. “Redevelopment of Inner City Communities is a high priority for me; therefore, I am pleased to see this new business locate on the West Side of Chicago in the Garfield Park Community,” said Congressman Danny K. Davis. City support for the project includes $7 million in Tax Increment Financing (TIF), the sale of 12 vacant parcels valued at $150,000 for $1 and $1.75 million in New Markets Tax Credits from the Chicago Development Fund.

Seizures can interfere with work, relationships and the ability to live independently. Previous research has shown that living in neighborhoods with high rates of crime have significantly higher levels of the stress hormone cortisol. Stress is also a factor that is commonly reported to trigger seizures in people with epilepsy. Every year, about 140,000 new cases of epilepsy are diagnosed in the United States. Anyone can have a seizure. Delayed recognition and inadequate treatment increases the risk for additional seizures, disability, and in rare instances, death. Researchers found no overall association between neighborhood crime status and the duration of epilepsy or between crime status and poverty. Having more seizures can significantly lower quality of life. Seizures that result in falls can cause bruising or even broken bones. Stigma can also be associated with having a seizure in public. “Understanding the impact of www.chicagodefender.com

violence and crime as potential triggers for seizures underscores the need for further research that might allow clinicians to make better-informed recommendations for self management education and stress management skills,” said Dr. Dilip Pandey, associate professor of neurology and rehabilitation at UIC and an investigator on the study. When asked what those individuals who live in high crime areas can do in light of the findings, Pandey said researchers on the study did not offer any recommendations, it only reported findings on the correlation between neighborhood crime and frequency of seizures. UIC researchers are seeking grants to conduct more studies. According to the CDC, epileptic seizures usually do not require emergency medical attention and suggests calling 911 only if one or more of the following is true: •The person has never had a seizure before •The person has difficulty breathing or waking after the seizure

•The seizure lasts longer than 5 minutes •The person has another seizure soon after the first one •The person is hurt during the seizure •The seizure happens in water •The person has a health condition like diabetes, heart disease, or is pregnant The following are general steps suggested by the CDC on how to help someone who is having any type of seizure: •Stay with the person until the seizure ends and he or she is fully awake. After it ends, help the person sit in a safe place. Once they are alert and able to communicate, tell them what happened in very simple terms. •Comfort the person and speak calmly. •Check to see if the person is wearing a medical bracelet or other emergency information. •Keep yourself and other people calm. •Offer to call a taxi or another person to make sure the person gets home safely. Miss Coretta started with the Fried Buffalo Shrimp. She found this starter dish to be delightful. The Buffalo sauce delivered a spicy kick, while not crossing the threshold of being too hot. The shrimp themselves were the jumbo variety and had a nice snap to them, indicating freshness. They were tossed in a flavorful and spicy Buffalo sauce that gently soaked into the shrimp’s crunchy exterior, making for a terrific seafood bite. I had the Buffalo Wings, and they were as tasty as those offered by any chicken restaurant chain around. The wings were prepared well, had enough flavor and crunch for any wing aficionado to appreciate, and were served covered with the same delicious Buffalo sauce as the shrimp. Both appetizers were well above average. As we were licking the Buffalo sauce from our fingers, the first pie arrived. It was Slice of Bronzeville’s Jerk Chicken Pizza. The pizza looked scrumptious and smelled divine, and we could not wait to dig in. A gooey mozzarella cheese blanketed the top of the pizza, with the outer edge caramelized into a beautiful brown. The cheese was plentiful, as well. There is nothing more disappointing than a pizzeria that skimps on the mozzarella. Our pizza was cut into squares like most Chicago-style thin crust pizzas. We grabbed a square and after our very first bite, declared that the residents of Bronzeville are in good pizza hands with Slice of Bronzeville. The jerk chicken was moist and full of jerk flavor, and the tomato sauce was savory with an expertly baked crust – a nice fusion of Italy and Jamaica, all in one bite. The Turkey Sausage Pizza had sausage generously portioned throughout, so with each bite we enjoyed an explosion of lip-smacking sausage goodness. And, once again, there was no skimping on the mozzarella, which only enhanced this pizza’s yumminess. Slice of Bronzeville is a nice spot for dine-in with plenty of tables and ample space for accommodating large parties. There are many different toppings to choose from, so be as creative as you want with your pizza. With Slice of Bronzeville being in business for roughly nine months, we foresee them getting better and better as they accrue more time in the pizza busi-

So, in the very near future, you may want to give Slice of Bronzeville a try – the perfect opportunity to enjoy good pizza that will not break the bank. Good pizza at a fair price, what more can you ask for? We were so impressed with Slice of Bronzeville, we included them on The Black Foodies Taste & Tour of Chicago, which we hosted in early November. (Be on the lookout for our next Taste & Tour in the spring of 2019). All of our tour guests gave high praises for Slice of Bronzeville’s Meat Lovers, Jerk Chicken, and Veggie pizza options. We rank restaurants based on number of kisses (one thru five). One…two… three…four, with five being the best. Slice of Bronzeville receives 4 1/2 kisses. Legendary Actress Pam Grier Represents Iconic Black Movies Through Streaming Service By Marshelle R. Sanders Defender Contributing Writer A new genre of films emerged in the 1970s and centered around the burgeoning Black urban identity. The Blaxploitation movement sought to make relatable mainstream movies that the growing Black population of America could relate to, although after a few years the whole country began to embrace the style and content of the genre. And now those films are available through a streaming service. Actress Pam Grier is the official ambassador and spokesperson for the latest online stream called “Brown Sugar.” This streaming service features the biggest collection of “the baddest African-American movies of all-time,” and for the holidays they are launching a special gift subscription of $42 for a 1-year subscription. The service just recently launched on Xfinity X1, providing more access to over 300 of your favorite films and documentaries, such as Monster’s Ball, Cooley High, Super Fly, This is Purple Reign: The Life, Music, and Legacy of Prince documentary and many more! Grier is a movie legend and blazed a trail for all actresses, showing Hollywood that women could open and carry movies as the lead characters. Many of her films seen on Brown Sugar - Foxy Brown, Coffy, Sheba, Baby, and Friday Foster to name a few - are excellent representations of a leading lady. She also starred in Jackie Brown, written and directed by Quentin Tarantino and co-starring Samuel L. Jackson, Robert DeNiro and Michael Keaton. Brown Sugar launches on Xfinity X1 and is the First US Pay-TV Provider to Offer Streaming Service Featuring Iconic African-American Movies such as Dolemite, Shaft, Super Fly, Black Belt Jones, Cleopatra Jones, Hollywood Shuffle, Three The Hard Way, Richard Pryor: Live on the Sunset Strip and more. Grier stated, “I started working as an ambassador over a year ago to let everyone know that is important to keep our brand and develop our recognition to show there’s a market for Afrocentric Black films, comedy, concerts, musicals and that we are valuable. Also, if we keep that recognition THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

Brown Sugar can be added to X1 customers’ service for a seven-day free trial period and then for $3.99 per month after that. Brown Sugar programming includes critically acclaimed films like the 1967 classic Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, starring the legendary Sidney Poitier. In addition to popular “Blaxploitation” movies and classic Black films, Brown Sugar will also include complete seasons of Bounce series shows including “Saints & Sinners,” “Family Time,” “In The Cut” and more, along with exciting events such as the boxing series “Premier Boxing Champions.” Documentaries featuring musical icons, such as Beyoncé, Prince and Michael Jackson, will also be available. The Brown Sugar service of African American films and culture shows that we are not a monolithic community. The service also brings nostalgia to many people who were around during the rise of Blaxploitation movies. “My mom back in the day couldn’t afford to go to the movies; now she and my relatives and neighbors, they are sitting down and watching this, and the look on

She is also starring in a new TV sitcom “Bless This Mess” that will be debuting in 2019. Grier plays Constance Terry, a Sheriff and store owner who’s the hub of the town’s gossip. She has a film coming out next year called POMS alongside Diane Keaton, Rhea Pearlman and Jacki Weaver about a group of women who form a cheerleading squad at their retirement community. 12 Voices On The Front Porch: How the Greens (Almost) Stole Christmas By Shanita Baraka Akintonde 12 Voices I am a big fan of everything about this time of year—the Christmas tree, holiday decorations, sparkly dresses with a hint of décolleté, and especially the Shanita Baraka FOOD— Akintonde as in oldschool, home-cooked, GOOD grub. I am the great-granddaughter, grand-daughter, niece and daughter of some of the BEST soul food cooks. I’m talking about women who put the SO in SOUL food, as in SO out of this world. Lucille, Helen, Catherine, Willie Mae, and Mary Catherine created magic in the kitchen. This culinary cohort was on top of #SlayDaily before it became a Beyoncé-endorsed hashtag. These were my role models. They were women who fed my body and my spirit. Then they passed their cooking mantle in my direction. What a tall order. But I was ready. I remember the first time I was asked to prepare the ENTIRE family Christmas meal. That was nearly 20 years ago. I woke up the day before, Christmas Eve, ready to prep my meal. I planned to rinse, chop, stuff, stack, slice, and dice all day- just like my family’s gastronomic gurus had done for decades prior. There I was, strutting around

Today, I’m surprised by the number of women from my generation who don’t follow suit and prepare holiday meals, or any meal, for their families. As elder populations in the Black community continue to shrink, apparently so does the desire to carry on family mealtime traditions. my kitchen, snacking twice as much as I stacked—feeling myself. Not. So. Fast. I had forgotten to buy the GREENS!! “No big deal,” I said aloud. I’ll just have my husband, Jimmy, grab some. But wait! It was Christmas Eve. All major grocery stores were closed on major holidays. I started to panic. Then I got a BRILLIANT idea. A-Ha! I could use CANNED greens. I knew Walgreens sold them and they would be OPEN! I had seen them there when I’d gone shopping for peppermint sticks weeks prior. I gave Jimmy instructions on what to buy—canned ‘lead leaves’ with the word ‘Glory’ scribbled across the front. He returned with four or five cans of gastrointestinal goodies and placed them in my hands. My strut returned. It continued through my prep and presentation of this inventive vegetation at the family dinner. I already know that YOU, dear reader, know what happened next. But keep reading, anyway. It was now Christmas day, and my dinner had turned out flawlessly. The turkey was juicy. The ham fell off the bone. The macaroni and cheese was gooey and good. The dressing was divine. The entire meal was so succulent and savory that at several points throughout the meal my family periodically slapped each other. Then

they slapped themselves. Twice. All was good until it wasn’t. “Baby, what kind of greens are these?” That came from my Grandmother, Helen, a sweet, demure woman seated next to my grandfather, William, at the head of the table. She held a vanilla wafer swaddled in golden goodness in her left hand, evidence of the recent dip she’d taken into the homemade banana pudding that I’d slaved over the night before. “Turnip,” I said confidently, proud of myself for remembering my family’s discerning taste for the type and taste of whatever greens they ate. Collards were for Sunday dinners and funeral repasts. Turnip greens were for holidays. “Hmmm…,” she said while fingering her fork, which was draped with stringy, green threads. Her bottom lip was pulsating so violently it looked like it wanted to jump off her face and run away in disgust. My stomach started to bubble. “Are these CANNED greens?” This question, once hurled from the lips of my late, great Aunt Catherine, took the form of an invisible lasso that was headed in my direction. Aunt Catherine had been a female firecracker, a woman who shot from the hip and kicked casualties to the ground with stiletto-clad feet (she had

worn HIGH HEELS while pushing a walker). She passed away this past October, a stones’ throw from her 100th birthday. But on this day, back in 1999, she was alive and well. “Well they came in a can, but I seasoned them with……………………….” I weakly murmured. “AW LAWWWD!!!” My Aunt Catherine clutched her chest as she struck a Fred Sanford-inspired fake heart attack. What happened next is a blur in my memory. But those are the women who raised me. Traditional stalwarts who didn’t believe in taking any shortcuts, especially in the kitchen. Today, I’m surprised by the number of women from my generation who don’t follow suit and prepare holiday meals, or any meal, for their families. As elder populations in the Black community continue to shrink, apparently so does the desire to carry on family mealtime traditions. Research shows that the average American eats one in every five meals in a car, and one in four eats at least ONE fast food meal every day. According to a 2014 analysis from The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), students who do

not regularly eat with their parents are significantly more likely to be truant at school. The OECD study further reports that students who do not share meals with their families have higher rates of school absenteeism as well. Granted, a large portion of students today are being raised in households where parents are trying to make ends meet, not shop for and prepare potatoes and meat. Mom and Dad are often too tired to even DREAM about sitting down at a dinner table. So perhaps the answer is to find a happy medium. The key is to try to SHARE a meal with the family as much as possible, whether the food is store-bought or homemade, in a car or at a table. In my house, there will be plenty of pots burning on the stove this year as I prepare our traditional family Christmas dinner. With everyone’s busy schedule, Christmas is one occasion that we always find time to break bread together. I will make the usual time-tested treats, which will include FRESH greens of course. Here’s wishing you and your loved ones. Merry Christmas! Shanita Baraka Akintonde is a tenured professor in the Communication Department at Columbia College Chicago. #OnTheHolidays - Five Tips On How To REALLY Shop For The Holidays By Elle Smith 12 Voices

Is there a set spending limit per person? Have you gotten yourself into too many “grab bag” situations? Making a list and checking it MORE than twice is necessary. Budget - Budget - BUDGET! 3. Business Owners: if you are looking to purchase for clients, think about discounting a service for a month. A deal is ALSO a gift! Offer select services to your clients (or potential new clients) at a discounted rate! Anyone can appreciate holiday specials! 4. Plan a trip to a local shelter to feed the homeless during the holidays. Getting a group of your www.chicagodefender.com

friends together to spend “time” giving is ALSO a gift. Get your girls/guys small tokens on the day of (i.e. buy coffee, provide a small, continental breakfast, etc). 5. If this is the year that you are unable to afford gift giving, then this is the year that you are unable to afford gift giving. Sometimes, taking a year off to regroup and/or save for other big ticket items (i.e. buying a home, paying off a car, building savings) is what takes priority over shopping. You don’t have to explain your reasons; your decision is ultimately your decision. Those who understand won’t be offended;

those who get offended just don’t understand. The holidays are a time for family, love, togetherness, preparations for a new year, and so much more. The holidays are also a time when people tend to go overboard. Always apply focus on what really matters, and everything else surrounding your decisions typically falls into place on its own!
