Historic Pastor Rev. James Bass Dies at 98

Austin To Unveil First Ever Quality-Of-Life Plan

Rev. James Bass, Former Pastor of Chicago’s Historic Mount Olive Baptist Church, passed away at the age of 98. Rev. Bass made his transition at a Chicago area hospice facility. He died of natural causes. Rev. Bass was the Organizer and retired Pastor of Mt. Olive M.B. Church, 5729 W. Chicago Ave. “Pastor Bass was a mentor to all of us who dared to be leaders of congregations. He taught us all that our greatest presence is outside the walls of the church,” said Bishop Larry D. Trotter of the Sweet Holy Spirit Church of Chicago. Rev. James Bass Trotter added, “His relationship with Dr. Martin Luther King was extraordinary and well regarded. He was a catalyst of sorts in getting citywide support for Dr. King during some difficult and turbulent times for African Americans living in Chicago in the 1960s.” “Reverend Bass contributed much to upward mobility of African Americans in Chicago. Without his support of Dr. King, Black Chicago would never have experienced the political empowerment in which we enjoy even on today,” says Bishop Tavis Grant of the Antioch Churches Network International. In 1956 Reverend Bass relocated to Chicago, and organized Mt. Olive Baptist Church, where he pastored for 45 years. He retired at age 81. Rev. Bass’ life and legacy were celebrated and remembered on Sunday, December 9 and Monday, December 10.

On Saturday, December 15, 2018, a Quality-of-Life Plan (QLP), created and owned by the Austin community, will be unveiled. The plan lays out a comprehensive set of strategies that build on Austin’s many assets while outlining new opportunities for moving Austin forward together. Over the past 18 months, Austin Coming Together (ACT) partnered with Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC Chicago) to bring together over 400 Austin community stakeholders including elected officials, residents and representatives from local organizations and businesses to voice what they felt were Austin’s needs and priorities. To help Austin realize its vision for neighborhood revitalization, stakeholders have identified 23 strategies and 80+ actions. The results will be presented to the public at the “Austin Forward!” Community Summit. The QLP addresses seven issue areas: Community Narrative, Economic Development, Education, Housing, Public Safety, Youth Empowerment, and Civic Engagement. The “Austin Forward!” Community Summit will include refreshments, a live performance from the Chicago Children’s Choir, and the first look at Austin’s Quality-of-Life Plan. Black Christmas New Christmas Movies Featuring African Americans By Marshelle R. Sanders Defender Contributing Writer It’s about that time again. The lights and tree are up, the gifts are wrapped (or just about wrapped), we have received the snow already and many are checking those lists again-- all because the Christmas season is upon us! Alongside the family visits, cold weather and hot chocolate, your TV, laptop and media devices have nonstop Christmas and holiday programming for the next few weeks. In the age of streaming and Peak TV, there are so many holiday things to watch, so to help you get the most on the small screen, the Chicago Defender has put together a few listings of some new and exciting films featuring African American actors and actresses for you to check out this season. Dec. 13 4/3 a.m. c (Hallmark) A Majestic Christmas Christmas in the charming town of Briar Falls will be bittersweet this year when architect Nell goes back to her hometown having been given the job of turning the historic Majestic Playhouse into a modern multiplex, much to the town’s objections. This job is Nell’s first promotion, and one she wishes she hadn’t been chosen for, especially when she meets the new owner of the theater, Connor, whose vision and ideas clash with Nell’s. Since Connor hasn’t had much experience celebrating Christmas, Nell hopes that if she can give him a crash course in Christmas during the town’s Twelve Day Festival, that he might just change his mind about modernizing the Majestic. Starring Jerrika Hinton and Christian Vincent. Dec. 16 Coins for Christmas 7/6 p.m. c (TV One) Single mom Madison (Essence Atkins) finds herself scraping pennies together two weeks before Christmas after the IRS freezes her bank account, her ex fails to come through with any help, and her boss fires her. Desperate to pay bills and buy gifts for her teenTHE CHICAGO DEFENDER

age children, Madison jumps into the ever-popular “gig economy.” That’s when she meets and eventually gets hired by obnoxious, sidelined former pro football player Alec Darby (Stephen Bishop), who is also secretly on the verge of going broke. This odd couple butts heads time and time again, but they eventually forge a friendship. And, to their surprise, they learn a lot about themselves and teach one another how to be better people. Dec. 16 A Gingerbread Romance 8/7 p.m. c (Hallmark) With Christmas just weeks away, the architecture firm Taylor works for enters her in a contest in which the teams will design and build life-sized gingerbread houses. After the contest, Taylor will

likely be getting a promotion to a position in another city. The firm teams her up with Annabelle, a renowned French pastry chef with whom Taylor instantly locks horns. When Annabelle backs out, Taylor stumbles into a local bakery and meets Adam, a baker and single dad. In an act of desperation, Taylor convinces Adam to partner with her for the contest, arguing that winning would give the bakery and his designs much needed exposure. For years Taylor has been resistant to call anywhere “home” for fear it will only be temporary. But the time she spends with Adam and his daughter Brook in their cozy home, decorating for Christmas, and exploring Philadelphia at Christmas, fills her with a longing for a place to call home. Starring Tia Mowry-Hardrict and Duane Henry. www.chicagodefender.com

Jillian must find a way to make it stop before her holidays, her job and her relationship are ruined. Christmas Everlasting Hallmark Christmas is fast approaching, and years of long workdays employed at New York’s top corporate law firm are about to pay off now that Lucy Toomey (Tatyana Ali) will be made partner after the New Year. However, when Alice, her older sister with special needs,

unexpectedly passes away, Lucy returns back to Nilson’s Bay, Wis., to attend the funeral and handle her estate. Community Closing the Education Gap With More Black Male Teachers By Deborah Bayliss Defender Contributing Writer Two recent programs in Chicago are aimed at increasing the number of Black male teachers in the classroom. Men of Color in Education (MOCE) is an initiative from Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and City Colleges of Chicago to support men of color in pursuing careers in the education field. “Those of us who have walked through the door of opportunity have the responsibility to not slam it behind us, but to reach back, grab someone else’s hand, and pull them through too,” Emanuel said in a press release. “The Men of Color in Education initiative is not only vital to providing these students with a strong foundation for their future, it is the beginning of a ripple effect for men of color to continue teaching and mentoring their younger peers for generations to come.” The initiative, a three-semester program, will be led by men of color in the education field across Chicago who will work with students interested in pursuing education careers. Students can earn a college-level early childhood credential or 15 transfer credits. “There is a void when it comes to men of color in education, and this unique initiative—which was built by educators and for educators—allows Truman and City Colleges to help fill that need,” said Dr. Shawn Jackson, President of Truman College, which is City Colleges’ center of excellence in education, human and natural sciences. “With an esteemed group of mentors and strong support from CPS and our communities, these students will make up the next wave of minority leaders in education.” In another program, this fall, the University of Illinois of Chicago (UIC) welcomed six students in its newly formed “Call Me MISTER” program that aims to prepare Black and Latino men as elementary teachers who want to teach in the Chicago Public Schools system. The program, which stands for “Mentors Instructing Students Toward Effective Role Models” is part of a network currently operating in 31 schools across the country, with UIC serving as the first large urban research institution. The program began at Clemson University in 2000 as a way to increase the pool of available teachers from a broader, more diverse background. “We have students who go from Head Start to 12th grade and they can say, ‘I’ve never had a Black male teacher,’” said Alfred Tatum, dean of UIC’s College of Education. “They are rarely recruited to be elementary teachers.” THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

The six students in UIC’s inaugural cohort had to show a deep commitment to want to teach at the elementary level in Chicago public schools. The students, who first had to be accepted into UIC, come primarily from schools with predominant Black and Latino student populations, said Tatum. “We are really creating a pipeline for these young men to go back to the Chicago public schools and the same neighborhoods where they came from,” Tatum said. The students, who are pursuing approved programs of study in urban teacher education, will receive full tuition and room and board; an academic and mentoring support system to help ensure their success; a cohort system for social and cultural support; and assistance with job placement. At UIC, the students will live in the same residence hall and serve as a support network for each other. Barriers for Black Male Teachers According to Teach for America, a diverse network of individuals working to confront educational inequity through teaching and at every sector of society to create a country free from this injustice, Black male teachers make up only two percent of the total teaching force in the U.S. These teachers tend to experience more barriers to staying in and moving up in the teaching field due to fewer opportunities for mentorship, professional development, and career advancement. Black male teachers also experience feelings of isolation as a result of many times being the only Black male educator on the entire school staff. It’s a serious issue that’s often talked about and needs to be addressed because the positive impact Black male teachers can have, especially on Black boys, is profound. Studies have found that when at least one Black teacher is present in the classroom, especially during third through fifth grades, there is a decrease in Black students’ likelihood of dropping out of school later on—particularly among the most economically disadvantaged Black males— and an increase in the likelihood that Black students of both genders will pursue higher education. MOCE students will pursue an early childhood or education credential at City Colleges, with all classes for students offered at Truman College. The first group will be comprised of current City Colleges students while the second group will engage Chicagoans interested in obtaining certification. Students pursuing these tracks will be eligible for the Chicago Early Learning Workforce Scholarship to support their pursuit of an early childhood credential

at City Colleges. The scholarship will increase access to higher education certification programs across the city in an effort to build a more diverse, trained workforce that meets the needs of the youngest learners across the city. The third group of students will be current Chicago Public Schools students participating in an early childhood education or education dual enrollment program, which allows them to take coursework at City Colleges for free while they are still in high school. “We’re working together with our partners to help bolster the pipeline of quality educators who reflect the students they serve, which exemplifies our underlying belief that the strength of our district lies in our diversity,” CPS Chief Education Officer LaTanya D. McDade said. “We must invest in a diverse educator pipeline and by extending our hands as mentors, we can build and empower the leaders of tomorrow.” All MOCE students will receive guidance and lessons in career-readiness from mentors from the Chicago PK-12 and higher education community, including distinguished Chicago Public Schools principals. Student participants will also be able to take advantage of an introductory paid internship through One Summer Chicago, and upon completion of initial coursework, a paid externship, also through One Summer Chicago. The program will work with CPS and the Department of Family Support and Services to create additional work-based learning opportunities for the students. “One Summer Chicago provides more than a job. It gives youth pride, exposing them to mentoring opportunities and teaches them valuable life skills,” said DFSS Commissioner Lisa Morrison But-

www.chicagodefender.com

Dr. Shawn Jackson ler. “The Men of Color in Education initiative will help to leave a lasting impression through additional work-based learning opportunities for the students, so they can continue to lead a positive and productive life while contributing to our communities.” According to the Illinois Report Card Data, Black and Latino children make up 17 and 26 percent of the state population in school districts in 2018, while the teacher workforce has only 12 percent of teachers from these two groups. Research completed by the National Collaborative on Diversity in the Teaching Force found that “increasing the percentage of teachers of color in classrooms is connected directly to closing the achievement gap.” Students who have not yet completed a degree or credential program will be given preference. To learn more about the Men of Color in Education initiative or to apply, students should contact Hollie Ware-Jaye at 773-907-4456 or hwarejaye@ccc.edu. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois Breaks Ground on First Neighborhood Center Aimed at Improving the Health of a Chicago Community Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois (BCBSIL) broke ground last week on a neighborhood center in Chicago’s historic Pullman community. Called the Blue Door Neighborhood Center, it will be BCBSIL’s first-ever neighborhood-based site, offering Chicagoans the opportunity to access in-person services aimed at helping them improve their health. The groundbreaking ceremony and celebration was at the 111th Street Gateway Retail Center at 756 E. 111th Street, just west of Doty Avenue. “We believe that health care is local. By working in partnership with residents in the Pullman and Roseland community our collective efforts can directly impact its overall health,” said Maurice Smith, president, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois. “We plan to offer education and wellness courses, access to support services and help our members make the best use of their benefits.” The center’s services will be for everyone in the community – not just BCBSIL members. Programming will be free and will include: Educational workshops with a focus on nutrition, diabetes, asthma, heart disease and behavioral health; wellness classes such as www.chicagodefender.com

Roseland communities to improve whole person wellness by connecting residents to resources that can also have an impact on health such as transportation to medical appointments or lack of housing.” “Because of the positive economic and social impact that recently completed projects like the Pullman Community Center, the Whole Foods Midwest Distribution Center, Pullman Park and others have had in the community, I’m confident the new Blue Cross Neighborhood Center will continue this positive trajectory well into the future,” said 9th Ward Alderman Anthony Beale. The BCBSIL center will occupy 3,700 square feet of space in the 111th Street Gateway Retail Center, which already houses a Potbelly Sandwich shop and Star Cleaners. The Retail Center was developed and built by Chicago Neighborhood Initiatives (CNI), a nonprofit community development organization which has created more than 1,300 new jobs and more than 200 new units of housing. The Blue Door Neighborhood Center is scheduled to open in April 2019. THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

The Wizard of Oz: Over The Rainbow By Rick and Brenda McCain Let’s Play It’s been 79 years since the American musical fantasy “The Wizard of Oz” hit the silver screen. In 1939 the adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s 1900 children’s book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz took the cinema world by storm by following the yellow brick road using Brenda and Rick technicolor, fantasy McCain storytelling, music and memorable characters. Baum wrote a total of 14 novels in the Oz series. There’s no place like home for the holidays, especially when it is filled with the magic of the iconic, memorable movie which is now playing at The Paramount Theatre through January 6, 2019. Acclaimed Director Amber Mak takes the audience “Over The Rainbow” into another fantastical world with “The Wizard of Oz,” as never seen before with a stellar cast, dazzling scenic designs, and outstanding choreography. Kids around the world remember the story of Dorothy Gale, the girl who was stuck on a Kansas farm with her aunt (Harriet Nzinga Plumpp), uncle and her beloved dog Toto (who was totally adorable) longing for a better and exciting life. When a tornado hits, Dorothy is whisked away to the magnificent world of Oz--an incredible place, full of munchkins, a living scarecrow, a tin man without a heart, a cowardly lion, and the mean and powerful Wicked Witch of the West, who swears revenge on Dorothy for her sister’s death! In her Paramount Theater debut, rising Chicago theater star Elizabeth Stenholt plays Dorothy and takes us on a journey to Emerald City where dreams and courage walk hand in hand down the yellow brick road. Stenholt’s performance was outstanding. She has a spot on resemblance of Judy Garland starring in the coveted role donning the red ruby slippers. It was also very refreshing to see a new face so thrilled to be on stage and almost in tears when the audience gave her a standing ovation. Accompanying Stenholt to see the Wizard is a trio of loveable characters: Kyle Adams (Scarecrow), Carl Draper (Tinman) and Paul-Jordan Jansen (Cowardly Lion). As they ease on down the road, they try to dodge the harassment from the wicked witch (Caron Buinis) and her winged monkeys. Caron Buinis (Wicked Witch of the West/Almira Gulch), Harriet Nzinga Plumpp (Glinda the Good Witch/ Aunt Em), and Elizabeth Stenholt (Dorothy) Paramount Theatre Presents The Wizard of Oz Directed by Acclaimed Chicago Director Amber Mak NOVEMBER 14-JANUARY 6 out the musical. We don’t remember hearing the iconic witch’s ghoulish laughter or evil squeal. We say: drop sexy and bring back the wicked witch. “The Wizard of Oz” is a great way to kick off the holiday season with some memorable songs such as ‘“Follow the Yellow Brick Road,” “We’re Off to See the Wizard,” “Over the Rainbow,” “DingDong! The Witch Is Dead,” and “If I Only Had a Brain;” it’s an awesome musical theater extravaganza! Director Amber Mak does another exceptional job bringing to life this historical performance. Mak, a respected Chicago based director, is also known for her critically-acclaimed directed and choreographed Paramount Theatre’s production of “Hairspray - The Musical” and was the director and associate choreographer of Paramount’s 2014 smash hit “Mary Poppins.” It’s a nice haul to Aurora, but this play is definitely worth the trip. “The Wizard of Oz” will surely warm your hearts from the ruby red slippers and the adorable Toto all the way to Emerald City. Remember, my pretties, this musical can teach you some timeless life lessons on brains, courage, heart, and feeling appreciated, and you could learn from Dorothy’s journey if you follow the yellow brick road! Let’s Play “Highly Recommends” The Wizard of Oz.

first album we worked together on I probably gave him a hard time. It was the first time he was doing a whole record and producing a CD so when he won the Grammys, I said ‘OK, well I guess I have to trust you this time’ (laughs). But we had fun; we both wanted it to be something that’s really magical and that captures the spirit of Christmas with the sound.” As a mom, Winans was overwhelmed by her son’s accomplishments. Winans stated that winning the awards was encouraging to her son, but he’s always been extremely talented. “When you get acknowledged by your peers like that, I love to see that, not just for my children; when I see the younger generation being confirmed, affirmed and acknowledged for the gifts and the talent that they have, I love it.” During this holiday people take a nice vacation somewhere warm, have huge parties or try to do something drastic, but not this year for Winans and her family; they are staying warm and keeping it simple. When asked how she was going to spend her holiday this year she stated, “I’m doing nothing www.chicagodefender.com

(laughs). My favorite thing to do at this point of my life is nothing. We are going to be home [in Nashville] this year. I thought I was going to be in front of the ocean doing nothing, but no we will be home in the cold. Just being at home with my husband, my children, and I have a son-in-law this year, so I’m excited about that.” The Winans family will start their Christmas day by having breakfast with prayer in the morning, talking about the real meaning of Christmas, reading scriptures, telling one another why they appreciate each other, and then for the rest of the day, everybody’s doing their own thing and chilling out. The holidays are a time of joy for most people. However, the holiday time can also bring unhappiness to some as well, but Winans has some sound advice for anyone who is not in the holiday spirit at this time. “Be encouraged. Don’t give up…. I know there are many people who are still sad but you know I want them to know that God is with them and things might not feel right, but just know that you’re not alone and if you just keep walk-

ing and applying God’s principles to your life, things will get better; so my thing is to hold on, hold up your head, don’t give up because things are going to get better, and we’re praying for them.” Before her latest Christmas album, Winans released a slew of albums that have crossed genres and boundaries and influenced a generation of gospel and secular vocalists. Her mantel today holds a staggering 12 GRAMMY Awards, 23 Dove Awards, and 7 Stellar Awards. She’s been inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame, Hollywood Walk of Fame, and Nashville Music City Walk of Fame, in addition to being named a Trailblazer of Soul by BMI and garnering multiple NAACP Image Awards, Soul Train Awards, Essence Awards, and more. And “Something’s Happening!” follows in line with Winans’ stellar brand. “Something’s Happening!” is sure to put listeners in a reflective yet festive mood all while helping you remember the true meaning of the holiday season.
