Emanuel Moving On Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has officially announced that he will not seek reelection. During a press conference held on Tuesday, September 4, 2018, Emanuel stated in part, “It has been the job of a lifetime, but not the job for a lifetime….I will always be here for the future of this great City, not as mayor but in the most important role anyone can play, as a citizen.” The announcement received immediate response from Former Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama as well as from the Chicago Teacher’s Union. Senator Dick Durbin, Gubernatorial candidate J.B. Pritzker and House Speaker Mike Madigan have all publicized responses to the announcement. Rainbow Push and clergy were planning a press conference for Tuesday evening. Obama stated, “I’ve been blessed to call Rahm my friend. Whatever he chooses to do next, I know he’ll continue to make a positive difference, just as he has throughout his career in public service. The Princess Shuri Project, named for Princess Shuri from the blockbuster movie The Black Panther, recently completed its summer session. The program piloted in the Roseland community is a technology and mentoring program. Participants learned how to build websites with light coding and game application. The participants were also exposed to other STEM skills and worked on character building as well as improving general and digital literacy. A public presentation of the skills learned was demonstrated during Demo Day. According to Kyla Williams, President and CEO of the Henry Williams Love Foundation, who coordinated the project, the plan is to take the program global. Anti-Violence Protesters Arrested Anti-violence protesters gathered at Cumberland Ave and the Kennedy Expressway to protest Chicago violence this Labor Day. The protestors, led by Rev. Gregory Livingston, attempted to enter the Kennedy expressway and were quickly arrested. Twelve demonstrators, including Livingston, were arrested for obstructing a roadway. Most of the protesters were released and had to pay a $120 fine. Mayoral candidate Willie Wilson has committed to bailing out any protesters remaining in jail. This is the third such protest in the City with the first organized by Father Michael Pfleger of St. Sabina on July 7, 2018. There were thousands of participants and no arrests. The second protest was on August 2, 2018 on Lakeshore Drive. About 150 protesters marched from Belmont Ave to the entrance of Wrigley Field just before the Cubs game was set to start. Take your child to work day had new meaning for Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson. Johnson’s son, Daniel Johnson, who donated a kidney to his father in 2017, was sworn in last week as a Chicago Police officer. On Friday August 31, 2018, father and son patrolled the streets of Chicago together. On Tuesday, August 28, 2018, the younger Johnson and 218 additional police officers took their oath at Navy Pier as they were welcomed into the Chicago Police Department. Daniel Johnson, a former teacher, now works for and with his dad. The new class of Chicago Police Officers is 69 percent minority.
ComEd Announces App to Save Customers Money ComEd recently announced that a new Save and Share mobile app can help residents in and near the Bronzeville neighborhood to save on energy bills and give back to the community at the same time. The Save and Share App gives eligible residential customers weekly targets for reducing their energy use based on their historic use and weather forecasts. Customers can make daily adjustments using energy–saving tips and resources available at their fingertips. If they meet their energy efficiency goals, customers will be rewarded with Save and Share dollars, which they may in turn share with local non-profit organizations. The app is being piloted in Bronzeville. Depending on its success, it may become available to other ComEd residential customers. Sickle Cell Disease What We Should Know
By Sharice Bradford Defender Contributing Editor September is the month where we celebrate Baby Safety, Blood Cancer Awareness, Childhood Cancer, and Prostate Health Month. There are many other observances that get the recognition and funding that awareness brings. One specific illness that is recognized in September that doesn’t receive the recognition and funding needed to develop more treatments, cures and awareness is Sickle Cell Anemia or Sickle Cell Disease. September is Sickle Cell Awareness Month. Sickle Cell Anemia, or Sickle Cell Disease (SCD), is the most prevalent genetic inherited disease in the world. Annually, in the United States, 1 in 375 African Americans are born with Sickle Cell Disease. While thought to be a disease that only affects African Americans, SCD is found in regions where people are prone to Malaria. This means that places where you find malaria, you will also find the gene variant for SCD. Sickle Cell Disease is most common in people of African descent and Mediterranean countries such as Italy, Turkey and Greece. SCD can also be found in people who originated around the Arabian peninsula, Indian and Spanish speaking regions in South America, Central America and some areas in the Caribbean. Currently, the majority of Sickle Cell patients are African American. But the myth that it only affects African Americans is not true. Awareness Month The annual observance of Sickle Cell Awareness Month began in 1975 when the National Association for Sickle Cell Disease (NASCD) and its member organizations began hosting month long events to raise awareness about the disease. These events were also geared towards addressing SCD at a national level. These efforts included public education and fundraising activities. NASCD is now known as the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America (SCDAA). In 1976, SCDAA began a tradition of selecting a national poster child (now named a child ambassador). Red Blood Cells sador is Kiarra Roseburgh from Pennsylvania who was elected in 2017. It was not until 1983 when Sickle Cell Disease Awareness Month was recognized on more than just a national level. The Congressional Black Caucus of the House of Representatives unanimously passed a resolution asking then President Ronald Reagan to issue a proclamation declaring September as “National Sickle Cell Anemia Awareness Month.” Proclamation 5102 was signed in September 1983. In 2002, The Sickle Cell Disease Association of Illinois (SCDAI) petitioned Governor Thompson to proclaim September as Sickle Cell Awareness Month in Illinois. Chicago Connection According to a written history by William P. Winter Ph.D., and the Sickle Cell Association of Ontario, Sickle Cell Disease was first named in 1910 but has been present in Africa for hundreds of years. Walter Clement Noel, a dentistry student from Grenada who was studying in Chicago, went to see Dr. James Herrick in 1904 at Presbyterian Hospital with complaints of severe respiratory distress and a leg ulcer, both now known as symptoms of SCD. During his time in dental school, Noel was admitted several more times before he returned to Grenada to practice dentistry. Herrick, who was a cardiologist, referred Noel to a
medical resident, Dr. Ernest Irons. When Irons viewed Noel’s blood under a microscope, he saw red blood cells in the shape of sickles. Herrick renewed his interest in the Noel case due to the possibility of a medical breakthrough. Further Discoveries In 1922, Dr. V.R. Mason, who treated the 4th case of Sickle Cell Disease was the first to refer to the illness as “Sickle Cell Amenia.” He noticed that the similarities between his patient and the three previous patients that were known to have similar symptoms were all Black, which led to the misconception that sickle cell originated from people of African origin. In 1927, Vernon Hahn and Elizabeth Biermann Gillespie discovered that red blood cells from persons with the disease could be made to sickle by removing oxygen. This was exciting because red cells are the oxygen transporters of the body. The trouble was that there were people –often relatives of the patient – whose red cells had this trait of sickling when deprived of oxygen but who had no disease. This condition became known as “sickle trait.” Modern research on Sickle Cell Disease is credited to Linus Pauling. In 1949 Pauling introduced the term “molecular disease,” which has been widely used in discussing Sickle Cell Disease. Healthy blood cells carry blood www.chicagodefender.com
from the lungs to other tissues and organs in the body. In individuals with Sickle Cell normal blood cells form a sickle shape which sticks to the walls of various blood vessels which blocks blood flow resulting in pain, organ damage and infections. How to Diagnose There are several tests that can determine whether or not a person has Sickle Cell Disease. No matter what test is used, experts agree that early detection is important. Early detection can reduce the likelihood that patients born with sickle cell anemia suffer from bacterial infections, pneumonia and other complications. Early diagnosis will also make sure that parents receive genetic counseling and other information needed to manage their child’s illness. In 1972, the Sickle Cell Anemia Control Act was enacted and increased federal interest in the illness. However, it was not until May 1, 2006, that all states were required to provide newborn screenings for Sickle Cell Disease despite the fact that this newborn screening was recommended as a national effort in 1987. In older adults, or those born before April 30, 2006, Sickle Cell can be diagnosed by a blood test, sent to a laboratory to screen for hemoglobin S, the hemoglobin that detects the incidence of Sickle Cell Disease. If the test is
positive, further testing needs to be conducted to determine which sickle genes are present. Symptoms and Treatment What is most commonly know as a symptom of Sickle Cell disease is severe pain. Many patients have described the pain as feeling as if someone is crushing their bones. In addition to this often-debilitating pain, patients also suffer from chronic hemolytic anemia, multisystem organ damage and an increased risk of stroke. African American Sickle cell patients also have a shortened life expectancy which is 30 years less than the life expectancy of other African Americans. New therapies have been developed to increase the life expectancy of patients with Sickle Cell Disease and they continue to be developed. In the early 1980s it was determined that penicillin was a preventative method to reduce pneumococcal infections in patients with Sickle Cell Disease. It was also noted that if Sickle Cell patients were given penicillin early in childhood that these pneumococcal infections could be prevented later in life. In most cases, treatment for SCD is designed to help the patient avoid pain crises. Treatment is also focused on preventing complications and relieving symptoms continued on page 4

And it’s a great time to think about our health. We talked to a few experts to find out some things African Americans specifically should look out for while taking care of our health. Fibroids and Black Women While some of the major health issues like heart and kidney disease, cancer, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, sickle cell disease, and lupus are among the more serious health problems Black people face, uterine fibroids in African-American women are also an issue. Though uterine fibroids typically are not life threatening, the level of pain, and interruption of daily life, calls for attention. While fibroids typically are noncancerous growths of the uterus that often appear during childbearing years, it’s not known for sure what causes them. They reportedly grow rapidly during pregnancy when hormone levels are high and shrink with anti-hormone medication. Just as it is with the diseases mentioned previously, studies show that African-American woman are three times more likely to develop uterine fibroids than other women, and are more likely to develop them at an earlier age with more significant symptoms. When asked if he could shed some light on why African-American women are at higher risk for uterine fibroids, Paramjit “Romi” Chopra, MD, founder of The Midwest Institute of Minimally Invasive Therapies in Melrose Park that specializes in treating uterine fibroids in a minimally invasive manner said, “There are a lot of studies but not one clear reason why. Things like genetics, diet and some studies say hair chemicals could be a factor,” Chopra added. Symptoms include excessive bleeding, pain, bathroom use and pain with sex. caused by the illness. Treatments include pain medications and blood transfusions. Hydroxyurea, a drug used to reduce the frequency of pain crises, is also a treatment for SCD. According to the Center for 4 September 5 - 11, 2018
Dr. Chopra said too often physicians resort to removing the uterus as a way to resolve the problem and that 80 percent of women end up with hysterectomies when it’s not necessary. He said less invasive options are available. Chopra uses non-invasive to minimally invasive methods. “If your fibroids do not cause symptoms, there is no need to treat them,” he said. “Your doctor may want to watch them and monitor for any fibroid growth at each of your annual gynecological examinations. Some women may have fibroids but not experience symptoms that affect their daily life.” Chopra speaks at churches to educate Black women about uterine fibroids and his mind, body and spirit holistic approach when treating patients. Black women, he said, should
pay close attention to their diet, maintain a healthy lifestyle that includes proper self-care and exercise, get plenty of sleep and buy organic produce when possible as a way to avoid chemicals that could stimulate fibroid growth. Chopra also stressed that Black women should be wary of hair chemicals and look for options other than hysterectomies. A lot of Black women have already opted out of chemically processed styles and are embracing their own natural hair. Other Health Facts Though faced with a myriad health disparities, the Centers for Disease Control reports African Americans are living longer. The death rate for African Americans declined about 25 percent over 17 years, primarily for those aged 65 years and older. However, even with these
improvements, new data show younger African-Americans are living with or dying of many conditions typically found in White Americans at older ages. The difference shows up in African Americans in their 20s, 30s, and 40s for diseases and causes of death. When diseases start early, they can lead to death earlier, according to the CDC. Chronic diseases and some of the risk factors may be silent or not diagnosed during these early years. Health disparities are often due to economic and social conditions that are more common among African-Americans than Whites. For example, African American adults are more likely to report they cannot see a doctor because of cost. Cultural factors also play a role. Information cited by WebMD, a medical reference website, show
Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), from birth to age 2, children should be closely monitored by their physicians, and those older than 2 should see their doctors at least once a year, and more frequently if they are not feeling well. Bone Marrow transplantation or
stem cell transplant is also being used to cure Sickle Cell Disease. This requires the bone marrow of a sickle cell patient to be replaced with healthy bone marrow from a person who does not have sickle cell disease. There are several medical institutions offering this treatment and individuals with

diabetes is 60 percent more common in Black Americans than in Whites. Blacks are up to 2.5 times more likely to suffer a limb amputation and up to 5.6 times more likely to suffer kidney disease than other people with diabetes. •African-Americans are three times more likely to die of asthma than White Americans. •Deaths from lung scarring -sarcoidosis -- are 16 times more common among Blacks than among Whites. •Despite lower tobacco exposure, Black men are 50 percent more likely than White men to get lung cancer. •Strokes kill four times more 35- to 54-year-old Black Americans than White Americans. Blacks have nearly twice the firsttime stroke risk of Whites. •Blacks develop high blood pressure earlier in life -- and with much higher blood pressure levels -- than Whites. Nearly 42 percent of Black men and more than 45 percent of Black women aged 20 and older have high blood pressure. •Cancer treatment is equally successful for all races. Yet Black men have a 40 percent higher cancer death rate than White men. African-American women have a 20 percent higher cancer death rate than White women. To address the issue, the CDC suggests public health professionals can use proven programs to reduce disparities and barriers; work with other sectors, such as faith and community organizations, education, business, transportation, and housing, to create social and economic conditions that promote health starting in childhood; link more people to doctors, nurses, or community health centers to encourage regular and follow-up medical visits; and also develop and provide training for healthcare professionals to understand cultural differences in how patients interact with providers and the healthcare system.

Alternative Courts Offer Paths to Avoid Convictions We spoke with the head of Cook County’s alternative court system to find out more about how they divert people from jail and decrease incarceration rates. By Bia Medious City Bureau Though the vast majority of Cook County’s criminal cases are tried in criminal courts, the county also has a substantial “alternative” court system—or courts that aim to rehabilitate defendants rather than sending them straight to jail. Nineteen problem-solving courts have been established throughout the county since 1998. Courts dedicated to specific populations such as those with mental illness, drug dependency and veterans offer alternative sentencing options that keep the mostly nonviolent defendants from returning to jail through treatment programs and intensive supervision. In 2011, the county took another approach by establishing deferred prosecution programs aimed at helping low-level offenders before a conviction is placed on their records. Emily Cole leads the Alternative Prosecution and Sentencing Unit inside of the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office. She began her career as a prosecutor with the office in 1998 and has spent the last 17 years in this type of work. City Bureau met with Cole at the Leighton Criminal Court Building, in her 14th-floor corner office that overlooks most of the Chicago skyline. Surrounded by volumes of books on everything from Illinois statutes to reference guides on searches, Cole shared information about the programs and how access to them can be increased. What are the deferred prosecution and alternative sentencing programs? Deferred Prosecution happens pre-plea [or before conviction]. Alternative sentencing, which is basically the Problem-Solving Courts, happens post-plea [or after conviction]. Problem-Solving Courts handle felony cases, while Deferred Prosecution programs handle both misdemeanors and felonies. When we defer the prosecution of a case, as long as the individual -who is the defendant, 6 September 5 - 11, 2018
Cook County has 19 problem-solving courts. but is called the participant— does whatever is dictated by that particular court, then the State’s Attorney’s Office dismisses the case. People who are at low- and moderate-risk at re-offending, and those who are low-need, typically go into a Deferred Prosecution court, whereas high-risk, high-need individuals go into the Problem-Solving Courts. All of the offenses have to be probationable. Illinois statute actually enumerates the specific crimes that are ineligible. What are the benefits? Reducing recidivism [or the rate at which defendants commit new crimes after they’re released] and any sort of reconnecting individuals back into the community would be the main benefit of the programs. Getting a job, going to school, being better role models for their kids, maybe avoiding a case over in juvenile court with their children... I mean, it’s got the trickle-down effect. You can see the trend—in this office, across the United States and even internationally—that this is a cost-savings
benefit as well. And it’s absolutely the right thing to do for individuals who are nonviolent to have this type of approach versus being in and out of the criminal justice system their whole life. What is the process? So our office actively looks for cases. We have dedicated assistant state’s attorneys who sit downstairs near bond court and screen every case. Public defenders and attorneys also make referrals. Sometimes parents or family members call. I just had a grandmother call me last week about her granddaughter. A case comes to our attention, we review it, we determine if they are statutorily eligible, we reach out to the victim and then the participant has to agree to it. This is because the problem-solving courts are much more rigorous than regular probation. It’s a team approach. In drug court, participants typically get an assessment that’s almost always followed by inpatient treatment and then outwww.chicagodefender.com
patient treatment. From there, they go to a recovery home and then to a job training or educational program. The mental health and veteran’s courts follow similar paths. How can access to deferred prosecution and alternative sentencing programs be increased? We can always use more assistant state’s attorneys. There are currently 15 in my unit working at all of the district courthouses, but not every day. Everyone in my office should know about these programs, but having someone in court every day who knows the programs really well would be better. Also, we could definitely use more funds. The state’s attorney’s office doesn’t charge anyone to go through deferred prosecution programs because that would mean those who had money could defer their cases and not those who didn’t. So we link up with treatment providers that have the resources to figure out how to get reimbursed. So while money may
not help with volume, because people still have to qualify, it would probably affect the success rate of the programs. There are things like recovery homes that aren’t covered by CountyCare or Medicaid. We’re always looking for referrals for participants to get into any of these programs. Another example is when inpatient stays are covered, they are usually shorter than we would prefer. Getting the word out about these programs is another way access can be increased. I can only do so much training myself, and that’s done with state’s attorneys, public defenders, bar associations, the sheriff’s office, the Chicago Police Department and at a variety of speaking engagements. National Criticism of Rev. Jasper Williams Follow His Remarks at Aretha Franklin’s Funeral By Lauren Burke NNPA Saying his subject was “Aretha the Queen of Soul,” Rev. Jasper Williams of the Salem Bible Church in Atlanta gave the audience gathered for Aretha Franklin’s funeral a few unexpected memories laced with political commentary. Though he began simply, referring to the history of soul music and gospel, his talk became political as Williams appeared towards the end of the eight-hour service. Rev. Williams was one of over three dozen speakers at Franklin’s lengthy Detroit home going ceremony. Rev. Williams referenced Blackon-Black crime, said single mothers are incapable of raising sons alone and proclaimed that Black America has lost its soul and it’s “now time for Black America to come back home.” “Where is your soul, Black man?” he asked the audience at one point. “As I look in your house, there are no fathers in the home no more. Where is your soul?” “Seventy percent of our households are led by our precious, proud, fine Black women. But as proud, beautiful and fine as our Black women are, one thing a Black woman cannot do. A Black woman cannot raise a Black boy to be a man. She can’t do that. She can’t do that,” Rev. Williams said. “It amazes me how it is that when the police kill one of us, we’re ready to protest march, destroy innocent property,” he said. “We’re ready to loot, steal whatever we want. ...But when we kill 100 of us, nobody says anything. Nobody does anything,” he went on. “There was a time when we as a race had a thriving economy. I remember we had our own little grocery stores. We had our own little hotels. They weren’t big and

Singer Gladys Knight’s
performance was also viewed as a moment that brought the ceremony back from Williams’ political speech. “Black Mothers been raising Black boys for years! We still are raising proud, accomplished and aware Black men! I should have known! Rest of this eulogy has been a conservative Black confusion rant!” wrote attorney Barbara Arwine from her twitter feed during the speech. “Folks, he can’t see, but Stevie Wonder can hear. And he is offering a rebuke to the eulogy. Don’t think for a second, he isn’t! And
the folks in the room heard it,” wrote journalist Roland Martin, who attended the service. “Reverend Jasper Williams’ plantation style speech at #ArethaFranklinFuneral is a prime example why there is a total disconnect between young Black people and the older Black church crowd. All that cowardly “you’s gots to do better” talk ain’t fooling these kids,” offered anti-racism strategist Tariq Nasheed on twitter. Before Rev. Williams spoke, Smokey Robinson, Shirley Ceasar, Jennifer Hudson, Chaka Khan, Jennifer Lewis and Ron Isley per-
formed among many others. Rev. William Barbour and Rev. Jesse Jackson also delivered remarks. “Aretha was in her very own special category,” said founder of Arista Records Clive Davis. “Her voice will be impacting others literally for centuries to come,” Davis added. A second tribute to Franklin and her music is planned at Madison Square Garden this fall. After 30 years, that average has risen to $9,970 for the 2017-2018 school year, a 213 percent increase. There is little change at private schools. In 1988, the average tuition for a private nonprofit four-
year institution was $15,160, in 2017 dollars. For the 2017-2018 school year, it’s $34,740, a 129 percent increase. The #TwitterTrunkParty, and trunk parties in general, not only indicate that college is not free, but communities are still dependent on the benevolence of its individuals to pay for what many would call
a human right – education. Regardless of the politics around education, #TheTwitterTrunkParty provided a successful container for people to support young scholars and forged new relationships. Hundreds of college students have been supported and Kaba has already moved on to her next organizing effort. Her hope in
the goodness that resides in people produces the ideas that eventually leave a positive imprint on the lives of others. Kaba believes others are capable of doing this as well: “People want to do good deeds. If the container is provided, and they’re given basic steps on how-to, it will happen.”

12 Voices On the Front Porch: R-E-S-P-E-C-T, What Does That Word Mean to Me? By Shanita Baraka Akintonde 12 voices I, too, like many of you, am very familiar with the term RESPECT. A significant portion of the credit is due to the gospel-tinged, guttural bellows of the late, great Are- Shanita Baraka tha Franklin. Akintonde Most of us also know how to spell the word as well due to our ability to engage in melodic memorization. After all, that’s how we learned the alphabet. The Queen of Soul’s lyrical ability was so remarkable that she brought attention to a word whose very utterance yields both a message and a mandate—RESPECT. As I reflected on her passing, I took a step back and asked myself, “Do you REALLY know what the term ‘respect’ means?” Surprisingly, I found myself shaking my head from side to side as the word “No” escaped my lips. Don’t misunderstand me. I’ve always known what “Respect” meant in THEORY. I thought it to be a word that was earned, expected and demanded. It is an action that I regularly sought to practice. Despite these things, I realized that I have never officially taken the time to find out what it really means. So just like I do when pondering other life problems, I decided to GOOGLE IT. Here’s what I found from my handy online dictionaries. Respect is a definite feeling or action shown towards someone or something considered essential or held in high esteem or regard; it conveys a sense of admiration for excellent or valuable qualities, and it is also the process of honoring someone by exhibiting care, concern, or consideration for their needs or feelings. De-
rived from Miriam Webster Dictionary and Cambridge Dictionary Reading the definition of the word “respect” struck a chord in me. I realized I had never fully understood its meaning, despite my attempts to embody it. I was mainly drawn to the concept of exhibiting care, concern, and consideration in honor of someone you respect. The “care” concept is one that I learned from my great maternal grandmother, Great Grand, a woman I’ve written about in numerous columns. I unpack that notion further in my newly released book, Leading from the Heart. Here’s an excerpt: Our arrival to Great Grand’s white, wooden abode was almost theatrical. I sprang from the back seat and watched as Daddy unpacked our Chrysler, its lopsided headlights stared dimly ahead like the eyeballs of someone who’d had one too many drinks. I immediately ran toward Great Grand’s house, my gym-shoe clad feet sank deep into the rich soil that led to the wide front porch that surrounded the house. I sprinted past my mother, who’d been a few feet ahead of me, as my ears rang from faint drumbeats left behind by slave ancestors whose anguished whispers told stories of love and longing. Once I leaped onto the porch, I was heralded by warm greetings, hugs, and kisses bestowed upon me by a slew of uncles, aunts, cousins, and people that merely claimed to be related to us. Throughout the entire gathering, Great Grand remained silent, her full frame positioned in the middle of the porch in her rocking chair as she smiled and took it all in. I was a Tween during this visit, and I wrestled with feelings that ranged from awkward to excellent, sometimes in what felt like seconds. It was though Great Grand instinctively sensed my insecurities as she rose up in her chair and spoke with a voice so loud it was within earshot of the family assem-

bled on the porch and anyone else within a five-mile radius. “Y’all see how beautiful this child is? “Her Mama tells me she does good in school. Making straight A’s. She’s smart as a whip, probably gonna be the first Black president!” Even decades before the President Obama era, Great Grand had vision enough to realize there would be a Black president, even if it hadn’t turned out to be her great-granddaughter. “Look at those big pretty eyes. Watch out now, you gonna break some hearts, someday!” Great Grand exclaimed as she sat up in her rocking chair, it’s wooden base swayed vigorously, as if in agreement with her. “We’re all so proud of you, baby. You’re going to be a great woman SOMEDAY. Bless Your Heart.” I gleefully bit into a slice of watermelon and allowed its sweet juices to tickle my tongue. I felt happy. Great Grand’s words were transformative. Great Grand passed away in 1987, the same year that Aretha Franklin became the first woman inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Great Grand had a simple homegoing, much like the woman herself. It was a stark contrast to the funeral held for the Queen of Soul. The latter was sent home in a gold-hued coffin, a “chariot of gold” while wearing red stilettos. The only thing gold at Great Grand’s funeral was the crooked wig splattered on the minister’s wife’s head and the only thing red was the Kool-aid we drank as we stood in her kitchen. As we swapped stories and sorrow, I noticed a common theme. Great Grand was a woman who had commanded, and when necessary, DEMANDED respect. Aretha may have taught me to spell it, but I now realize that Great Grand taught me how to turn it into a rallying cry. R-E-S-P-E-C-T, I’ve found out what it means to me. Pandora’s Box Has Been Opened By Carl West 12 Voices This summer, the world has been, again, discussing Chicago’s perceived violence problem. This same excitement and attention around my city’s’ hyped-up wild-wild west week- Carl West ends, where the body count of shooting victims took center stage, happened last year and the year before, as well. This problem of war-torn neighborhoods goes so far back that I don’t completely blame the current mayor. The former longstanding mayor, Richard M. Daley, also seem to have ignored certain Black communities, in desperate need of revitalization. But the difference between Daley and Emanuel is that Richie actually allocated hundreds of millions of dollars to the Black community during his over 20 years in office. Yep, he did! But he designated Negro leaders to divert the cash to their select crews. Heck, let’s call it what it was, they stole from their own people to enrich themselves. And Rahm has never given any real capital development dollars to this new generation of home-owners, small businesses and aspiring hustlers who wanna make a difference in the communities where they live, work and play. The worse part is that Emanuel is still doing minimal business with the same old heads who stole from Black folks for decades. He keeps them on his “grant” payroll in order to utilize their self-imposed leverage over the Black community. They have a few select responsibilities like rallying the seniors during elections and other spirited moments. Their main duties are to stand zombie-style behind the mayor during crisis management stunt conferences. The mayor also has new puppets in my peer group who benefit slightly from their loyalty as his trusted surrogates. But here’s what’s incredibly real: regardless what they do in terms of more police on the streets, the Pandora Box has been opened far too long and generations of evil spirits have been unleashed. The investment in select Black com-
munities should have been made decades ago. This could’ve provided these now (shooters) children and grandchildren of the career unemployed, uneducated and uncontrollable men and women with possible opportunities to dream. The evil spirits lurking are the results of generational poverty which has ascended over this City like a steaming blanket. The Pandora Box will not be closed until real efforts are made to change the direction of poverty and illiteracy. Is there a lack of morals and respect for people, places, and things? Yes, that’s absolutely correct! But the current mayor did nothing to prepare select Black and Brown communities for longterm pain and suffering from years of starvation and poor education, which prevents certain people from developing critical thinking skills because they’re raised in lifelong despair and dysfunction. It’s also clear that Chicago’s Black aldermen are clueless. They wanna maintain their status as elected officials at all cost. Now, to make matters worse, the city council, the mayor and the police chief have authorized Bait trucks to sit idled in poor communities. This is a blatant attempt to find another way to entrap and abuse disenfranchised individuals. How wicked and unscrupulous is that? These people have NO concern for humanity. Black folks in city council and law enforcement hate their own people! Then you have residents on the South and West sides who’re fighting City Hall over an influx of industries polluting the air in their communities! The Pandora Box has been blasted wide open and now all of us must pray, be careful, and hope that none of our families, as well as ourselves, become a casualty of the war that has been waged not only in Chicago but across the globe. Racist and uncaring leaders and even Black fraudulent people who’ve turned their back on their community are mainly at fault! I only hope that the hidden hands of power soon admit their failures and attempt to make good. That’s the only way to put the padlock back on the Pandora Box. Locking Negroes up will not stop these demons! Carl D. Scholarships, Awards and Alpha Kappa Alpha, Inc. International Day of Prayer The Illinois Judicial Council recently held their Annual Luncheon; scholarships were presented by the Honorable Marilyn F. Johnson (Ret.) Vice-Chair of IJCF. Five students received scholarships: Sara Agate, Antionette Bolz, Alexandria Johnson, Addison Morgan and Vanessa Pratt. Awards were also given in various categories to: Hon. David B. Atkins; Hon. Rodney Hughes Brooks; Hon. Dominique C. Ross; Hon. Thaddeus L. Wilson,; Hon. Patricia Banks; Hon. William H. Hooks. A special tribute was given to Justice Charles E. Freeman, retired Supreme Court of Illinois. The Hon. Cynthia Y. Cobb was sworn in as the 2018-19 Chairman of the IJCF by Supreme Court Justice P. Scott Neville. There was also an oratorical presentation delivered by two students representing PUSH Excel Youth Oratorical, under the direction of Hon. Stanley Hill. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., XI NU Omega Chapter, hosted the AKA International Day of Prayer “Impact Day” recently at Trinity United Church of Christ. The service was attended by the 30th International President Dr. Glenda Glover, who is also the President of Tennessee State University, and the International Chaplain, Pamela Bates Porch. The AKAs packed the house in their pink and green. Trinity Creeks, a subdivision of Matteson, Ill., recently had a wonderful block party, and as part of the celebration, a new Trinity Creeks Monument was unveiled. The event was attended by the homeowners and local politicians. The Chicago White Sox are excited to announce the arrival of the Negro League’s Beisbol exhibition, a traveling collection from the Negro League’s Baseball Museum that explores the connection between African American baseball history and Hispanic cultures dating back to the late 1800’s. The exhibit was dedicated to the memory of “Minnie” Minoso. Minoso was known as the “The Cuban Comet” and Mr. White Sox . Sports by #TheBIGS Bears – The Mack Attack The Bears are back! Or at least that is the pulse of the fanbase after GM Ryan Pace traded two first round picks to the Oakland Raiders for elite pass rusher Khalil Mack. The move affectively takes their defense that was ranked in the top ten last year into potential elite territory. The Bears didn’t wait long to give Khalil Mack the payday he had long been looking for. After agreeing to acquire the three-time Pro Bowl pass rusher in a trade earlier Saturday, the Bears reached a six-year, $141 million extension with Mack that makes him the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history. Mack will be ready for Week 1 when the Bears head to Lambeau to take on Aaron Rogers and the Packers. White Sox give us a glimpse of the future After a nice August where the South Siders put a 17-12 record that included series wins over both the Yankees and Red Sox, that’s the nature of the White Sox right now. In baseball’s current era of teams publicly tanking and rebuilding that forces fans to endure a bunch of losing, the White Sox are beginning to look like the latest to bring that process to fruition. They posted a losing record in each month of the season until August, but since late July things appear to be clicking. The future of the White Sox is starting to arrive, and that future is exciting. South Side On The Rise. Eloy On Ice According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the White Sox will not be calling up outfielder Eloy Jimenez when rosters expand in September. The decision to keep Jimenez’s MLB debut on ice has little to do with performance according to GM Rick Hahn. The White Sox young slugger and top-10 MLB
prospect has hit .341 with 22 home runs between Double-A and Triple-A this season, and the team itself admitted that he’s close to being MLB-ready. This almost certainly has to do with service time and the White Sox wanting to be ahead of the curve, as keeping Jimenez down now and not calling him up until a few weeks into the 2019 season would give the White Sox an extra year of team control down the line. Patience is still a virtue when it comes to the Sox rebuild WNBA- Amber Stocks out as Sky GM/Head Coach The Chicago Sky fired Amber Stocks as general manager and head coach on Friday after a twoyear stint. She leaves with a record of 25-43 and no playoff appearances. “The entire organization would like to thank Amber for the hard work and dedication that she has given to the Chicago Sky for the past two seasons,” team President and CEO Adam Fox said. “At this time, we felt a change was necessary for the 2019 season. We wish her nothing but the best in the future. Our search for a new coach will begin immediately.” Stocks was named general manager and head coach of the Sky in December 2016 after serving as an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Sparks.

Now with new expectations on the horizon for our “Monsters of The Midway,” we look at the state of the Bears after the addition of All-Pro linebacker Kahlil Mack. Sports by #TheBIGS And just like that...”Roquan The Chef” talks take a backseat. With the addition of all-world linebacker Khalil Mack (acquired from the Raiders), there’s a heightened charge for week 1 in Green Bay for fans, players and coaches alike! (If you can’t tell, go and check Bears offensive lineman Charles Leno’s instagram account where he shows off his 2K18 dance moves to “Return of The Mack” by Mark Morrison.) Will Mack play? How much will Mack play? Those are important questions for the 2016 NFL Defensive Player Of The Year and week 1! More importantly...Ryan Pace is on his job. That Mark Trestman era was unbearable and Pace has all but revamped that roster. He’s putting the ball in second year QB “Money Making Mitch” Trubisky’s hands and trusting his growth process to flourish with the best of them. Now to have a marquee player like Mack in the most coveted Bears position (Butkus, Singletary, Urlacher) looks like a set up for winning football. Now it’s up to the coaching staff, players and front office to be on one accord to steer this boat in the right direction. One thing’s for sure...the hype is REAL and going into the infamous Lambeau Field to kick off the season is a top notch test for the Monsters of the Midway. I know Aaron

Terrence says… Over the last three years, the question of which sports organization is tops in Chicago has been an alluring debate. With the rise of the Cubs and them shaking off their 108-year Championship drought, it was clear that the Bears, who once held the top spot had to take a backseat. Forgettable stints with head coaches Marc Trestman and John Fox made the team formally known as “The Monsters of The Midway” an afterthought. But the last two seasons, GM Ryan Pace has been going hard trying to shake that off. Trading up a spot in 2017’s draft to select quarterback of the future Mitch Trubisky was a respectable first step. But that pale’s in comparison to the bomb Pace just dropped on his fanbase-trading away their 2019 and 2020 1st round draft picks for the Oakland Raiders All-Pro linebacker Kahlil Mack. Mack is an elite pass rusher who has wreaked havoc on the league since he entered the NFL…and now he will wear the blue and orange. Now, with the city a buzz because of the new “monster” at Halas Hall, expectations have risen and this town, seemingly overnight, is a Bears town once again. It is officially okay to start speculating about a playoff berth, although talk of another Superbowl shuffle is premature. The addition of Mack to a defense that was ranked in the top 10 last season allows you to wonder if they can rank in the top 5 this year. Or maybe even be the best defense in the league.
