Illinois Judical Council welcomes their new chair, Judge Andrea Buford Congratulations to Coach Roy Curry who was recently inducted into the Coahoma County, Clarksdale Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame. He is the only person to have been inducted into five Hall of Fames. Coach Curry is a retired football Coach at Robeson High School and Central Office Administrator for the Chicago Roy Curry Public Schools. He is a graduate of Jackson State University and former professional football player for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Back to School “Book Bag Giveaway”, was held at Mae Jemison School in Prairie Hills School District 144. The event sponsored by Yolanda Travis (McDonald’s Owner) in conjunction with the Black McDonald’s Owners Association (BMOA) distributed over 200 bags filled with supplies to the students as they arrived for school. BMOA has distributed book bags to children across the city. Thank you BMOA, it takes a village! Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Theta Omega Chapter recently sponsored their Community Health and Information Fair held at the AKArama Foundation Community Service Center. Children were given free health screenings, backpacks and workshops among other fun activities. Kudos to Mr. Leaks Barber, Mr. Leaks who volunteers every year to assist with haircuts for the students. I watched the face of student Jeremiah Vaughn from Fiske school as he bragged on his new hair cut. The Illinois Judicial Council under the leadership of Chairperson Judge Sharon O. Johnson celebrated its 2016-2017 year at the Palmer House. The theme for the year was “Courts Connecting with Communities.” Among the events held throughout the year were judicial forums such as “How Judges See It: What to Expect When You Go to Court,” held at Mount Ebenezer Baptist Church. They also mentored high school externs and helped expand the PUSH/IJC Youth Oratorical Contest. The event also acknowledged recently appointed Judges and awarded 5 scholarships to Law Students. The membership welcomed its newly elected Chair, Judge Andrea Buford at the ‘sold out’ event. Donna Miller announced her candidacy for the 6th District Cook County Commissioner. Donna has been in the health care industry for over 20 years and will focus on Health Care that will improve the quality of Life by putting “Power into Action”. Donna is a graduate of Howard University and is married to Dr. David Miller. Please support The Healthy Food Hub’s weekly Market in South Shore Saturdays from 11 am - 3 pm at The Quarry, 2423 E 75th Street, Chicago IL. The Healthy Food Hub is in collaboration with Cook County Health & Hospital Systems (CCHHS) to address low food access and food insecurity in Southern Cook County.
