The Bounce television network and the Brown Sugar streaming service are teaming up to carry Aretha Franklin’s farewell memorial service live this Friday, Aug. 31.

The funeral will take place at the Greater Grace Temple in Franklin’s hometown of Detroit. Stevie Wonder, Jennifer Hudson, Chaka Khan, Ronald Isley, Yolanda Adams, Shirley Caesar, The Clark Sisters and Marvin Sapp are among the 19 artists scheduled to perform at the family-and-friends-only service. Smokey Robinson, the Rev. Jesse Jackson and Former President Bill Clinton will be among the high-profile speakers.

Bounce and Brown Sugar will partner with Bounce’s local Detroit affiliate, WXYZ-TV, for the special event, airing and streaming WXYZ’s hometown coverage and commentary nationwide.

“Celebrating the Queen of Soul” will begin at 9:00 a.m. ET. WXYZ news anchors and longtime friends of Franklin, Carolyn Clifford and Glenda Lewis, will host the hour-long event. The special will include highlights and remembrances of the legendary singer’s career interspersed with live reports from outside Greater Grace Temple as celebrities, politicians, friends and loved ones arrive to pay their respects. Amara Enyia Announces Run For Mayor Lawyer Amara Enyia recently announced that she’s throwing her hat in the ring of the ever-growing number of candidates for Mayor of Chicago.

Enyia is no stranger to politics. She also ran for mayor in 2015.

Enyia has a law degree focused on international and environmental law and a Ph.D. in Education Policy. She consults with education organizations and community groups to advocate on issues around education equity.

According to her website, her goal is to help communities “unlock their civic imagination so they are empowered to create solutions that address the City’s most pressing issues.”

Enyia, an ironman competitor and marathoner, has been running through neighborhoods with community members each Wednesday at 6 p.m. to “reimagine the city.” After a few miles, the group meets over coffee to discuss ideas for the future.

To combat this blatant racist behavior, some noted celebrities refused to perform in segregated venues. Celebrities like Sammy Davis Jr., and Lena Horne made it clear that they would not perform in segregated venues. Unfortunately, the fight continues. In 1947, Jackie Robinson became the first African American player in Major League Baseball. He fought against the prejudice and discrimination and was an outspoken advocate for Civil Rights. While professional sports teams across the board are more integrated than ever, there is still a divide when it comes to equal treatment in this country. On a positive note, there are still sports figures who are willing to address these issues.

Former NFL player Colin Kaepernick has been the face of this cause over the past few years.

According to his website www. kaepernick7.com, the mission of his foundation is to “fight oppression of all kinds globally, through education and social activism.”

Because of his stance on racial equality, Amnesty International has named Kaepernick as their Ambassador of Conscience.

Recently, during his induction to the NFL Hall of Fame, former NFL player Randy Moss wore a tie with the names of Tamir Rice, Eric Garner, Freddie Gray, Sandra Bland and others. This was a bold statement recognizing those who continued on page 4

Education Celebrities have not stopped at working toward Civil Rights, celebrities champion other causes and another noted cause is education.

Local celebrities such as Jennifer Hudson, who hosts ‘Hatch Day” annually with her sister work to ensure that children are prepared to return to school with the supplies that they need. Chicago’s own Chance the Rapper has committed financially to Chicago Public Schools. This past weekend, Chicago Rapper Lil Dirk, was in the community passing out bookbags filled with supplies.

Not only instrumental in the effort to provide book bags to Chicago youth returning to school, Chicago’s own Vic Mensa, who was grand marshal in this year’s Bud Billiken Parade protested during the parade route about Jason Van Dyke, the police officer who shot Chicago youth Laquan McDonald in October 2014.

Lebron James, noted basketball player, recently opened the I Promise School in his hometown of Akron, Ohio. The school which started with 240 third and fourth graders in its inaugural class, offers students and families much more than education. The school offers free transportation for the students and GED courses and job placement for parents. James who has been known to pay college tuition for students, joins the growing list of celebrities who have funded scholarships and paid to send students to college.

Women’s Rights Women’s Rights and issues specifically related to women have also been championed by celebrities. From the March for Women’s Rights to the #MeToo movement to issues around motherhood, African American celebrities have lent their voices to these causes.

Recently, Serena Williams and Beyonce spoke candidly about the issues they experienced having children by cesarean section. Not only has their candidness showed their humanity, they have been vocal about women addressing the issues that result from childbirth; weight gain, health complications and depression.

Both Beyonce and Serena have championed other issues as well.

Serena is an advocate for victims of domestic violence, having lost a sister to domestic violence, and works closely with Allstate and their Purple Purse campaign. She is also a supporter of UNICEF and has her own Serena Williams fund.

Mental Health African American celebrities are just as dedicated to causes surrounding mental health. Many celebrities have been very vocal about their struggles with mental illness and advocate for others to seek help as well. Mariah Carey and longtime actress Jennifer Lewis have both been open about their struggles with bipolar disorder.

Former Chicago Bear Brandon Marshall was diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder and has started Project375, to help others battling this illness.

American Idol winner Fantasia has spoken about battling depression for years which led to a failed suicide attempt. Michelle Williams, gospel artist and former Destiny’s Child member also speaks candidly about battling depression since her teenage years.

Williams shared in a 2013, Huffington Post article that “We’re taught, ‘Just go to church and pray

about it. The Lord is going to heal you.” She further stated that “…in the meantime, I believe God-gifted people, physicians, doctors, therapists—that’s your healing. Take advantage of it. Go see a professional so that they can assess you. It’s ok if you’re going through something. Depression is not OK, but it is OK to get help.”

The NBA has created the NBA Cares program which according to their website cares.nba.com is to support fans, families and communities by promoting healthy minds and bodies and increasing awareness around emotional well-being.

Players from the NBA, WNBA and coaches share their stories and their journey’s on the site. The NBA Players association has also stepped up to develop a mental health and wellness program for players.

Boys and Girls Club Celebrities such as Denzel Washington, Angela Bassett, Barry Bonds and Ashanti have all been supporters of the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. Celebrities www.chicagodefender.com

The stories of how the Boys and Girls Clubs saved them are part of the reason that the organization has been in existence since 1860.

Celebrities have given back in a number of ways. James Brown created the celebrated anthem “Say It Loud- I’m Black and I’m Proud” in 1968, the height of the Civil Rights movement. Which was a year after Aretha Franklin recorded her chart topping song “Respect”, written and originally performed by Otis Redding, a song that became popular with both the Black Power and Human Rights movement. In her memoir Aretha: From These Roots: Franklin stated that “[Respect] reflected the need of the nation, the need of the average man and woman in the street, the businessman, the mother, the fireman, the teacher-everyone wanted respect.” Just a few months ago

Not only do celebrities lend their time, talent and money to the causes that are near and dear to their hearts, they also create their own foundations in order to give back and support the people and causes that they have an interest in. What is most important is that they are showing that they too are a part of the struggles and issues we all face in society. They show that dealing with heavy personal issues such as educational deficits, mental health and domestic violence, that it is ok to ask for help and seek treatment if necessary. Most celebrities have issues and causes that they advocate for on a daily basis, and the reality is that many of these causes need the attention and notoriety that celebrity status can bring. The even bigger issue is when will some of these issues be resolved? African Americans are now more than ever living in what appears to be a separate but unequal society. African Americans are still being held, detained and killed in record numbers by law enforcement. Domestic violence and mental health are still serious issues within our communities, not to mention the crime rates. When will the world give Black and Proud African Americans and the African American community the R-E-S-PE-C-T it has earned and worked so hard for?

No stranger to prostate cancer, Young lost his uncle, Henry Poindexter, to the disease ten years ago. Two uncles on his mother’s side of the family are also survivors.

Every year since losing his uncle to prostate cancer, Young’s family members, including his aunt Yvonne Poindexter who was married to Henry Poindexter, have been very active in the SEA Blue Chicago Prostate Cancer Walk and Run event.

“My message today is that early PSA screening may lead to early detection of cancer, which can further lead to successful treatment of that cancer and a longer and better quality of life,” Yvonne Poindexter said. “I also believe that all family members should educate themselves about prostate cancer, whether a family member has prostate cancer or not, so that all are familiar with the disease, current research and treatments and the its impact on the entire family.”

The 14th Annual SEA Blue event is scheduled for 8 a.m. to noon, Sept. 9, in Lincoln Park on Chicago’s lakefront. Money raised will help fund the work of Us TOO International (www.ustoo.org), a nonprofit that provides free educational resources and support services to the prostate cancer community.

In addition to the walk and run, SEA Blue will include a “Talk to the Experts” education tent, free PSA (prostate-specific antigen) testing,

Trinity Child Care Centers, Inc. Celebrates 40 Years with Fundraiser For 40 years, Trinity United Church of Christ’s Child Care Centers have been intentionally providing affordable and quality child care services in the community.

It is rare for small child care centers to continue for such a long time especially when they depend upon federal, state and local funding, but TUCC’s Child Care Centers have been able to withstand.

The church began the child care program when then-pastor Jeremiah Wright, Jr. (now pastor-emeritus) wanted to carry out the church’s mission of being in the heart of the community, ever seeking the community’s heart.

TUCC operates two centers— one on 69th and Stony Island for children ages 2-5 years and one at 532 W. 95th St. for children ages 6 weeks through 5 years, and an after school program for children 5-12.

Through the years, Garner said the centers have grown deeper by offering intentional services to guarantee that each child is “100 percent” ready to begin school.

The school is African-centered and teaches young children that “we come from greatness…we embrace our own. We need to know where we come from and we give them pride and a sense of

understanding.”

Garner said the center also creates an atmosphere where the parents and adults in the children’s lives will believe the same thing.

“We’re not just a drop off service,” Garner explained. Parents and adults are often asked to model the same behavior and think about their roots when making decisions.

For the 40th Anniversary celebration, alumni of the child care centers will make presentations and share how they were shaped by the centers. A 14 year-old who has developed a foundation to give kids toys will speak along with a young man whose oratorical skills have earned him the position of introducing the Mayor of Chicago www.chicagodefender.com

several times. Others from college will talk about how TUCC Child Care Centers made them leaders at an early age.

Wright Jr., TUCC’s current pastor Otis Moss, and Garner will also share the center’s vision from the past, present and future.

The money raised at the fundraiser will be used for staff development and other programs not earmarked for usage with funds from the government.

Garner pointed out that the centers have one of the lowest turnover rates in early child care because the workers believe in the mission.

“When you find people who are in love with what they are doing, it makes it easier,” she said.

“We want to develop and cultivate genius not only in children but in our staff.”

The goal is to raise $40,000 for 40 years.

“I believe we save lives,” Garner said. “When you have the ability to offer a child hope, especially in the Chicagoland community, when you can motivate and cultivate greatness, I believe we save lives.”

The celebration will be at Imani Village, 901 East 95th St. on Friday, September 14 from 5-8 p.m.

Community Back to School Tips for Fathers

By Jeffery M. Leving Defender Guest Writer With a new school year just around the corner, it’s worth taking a moment to reflect on the significance of a child’s first day in a new classroom. There is not only the excitement of a fresh start, but also the anxiousness that comes from a new environment and new school work. The start of the school year offers parents an opportunity to demonstrate that they are unified in the goal of advancing their children’s education, even though they may live apart.

My advocacy on behalf of divorced fathers has shown me the importance of cooperation between parents with back-to-school matters and with classroom activities throughout the year. There are four important areas of emphasis: 1) sharing the cost of school supplies, 2) sharing responsibility for supporting your child’s school schedule, 3) sharing responsibility for involvement in the child’s activities, both in and out of the classroom, and 4) maintaining a unified message regarding academic expectations.

Parents can lay the groundwork for a successful school year weeks before the first day of school. The annual rite of buying school sup-

plies is one that many parents dread. Rather than burden one parent with the costs, parents should team up, coordinating the shopping and splitting the costs (unless it’s agreed that one parent is in a position to pay more). If a big-ticket item needs to be purchased, such as a laptop or an expensive calculator, the child should understand that both parents were responsible for providing it.

The next obstacle to navigate is the school calendar. Your children’s teachers and the school administrators should be made aware of your co-parenting arrangements, and both parents should be on the school’s and teachers’ email lists.

Parents should be in communication to coordinate attendance of important events, such as parent-teacher conferences, athletic events, and school performances.

It is human nature that one parent tends to manage scheduling more than the other, but both parents should make sure they are aware of what’s coming up to avoid misunderstanding and resentment.

No one should end up saying, “You didn’t tell me this was happening.”

When the school year begins, parents should strive to be as physically present as possible.

Both parents should take the child to school on the first day, if they

can. This will send a message to teachers that both parents will be involved with decisions regarding the child’s education. Similarly, parents should strive to attend all parent-teacher conferences. If this is not practical, then perhaps one parent can be available by phone, while the other appears in person.

Parents should also make a point of attending as many of their children’s school activities as possible. Both parents will likely be juggling work-life and parenting responsibilities without a second adult in the house, which severely limits flexibility. However, children will often view a parent’s lack of attendance as a consequence of divorce or separation. Therefore, having parents in the audience will always be welcome. After all, if parents don’t get along, they don’t have to sit together. It’s your attendance that’s key.

Finally, when it comes to keeping children on track in their school work, both parents should be willing to play good cop and bad cop.

For fathers who aren’t living with their children, matters of discipline around school performance can be tricky. If a father feels the child is not maintaining his or her potential, he may want to be clear with the child about expectations.

Similarly, there can also be strong

incentive to be the good guy, especially when the amount of time spent with the child is limited.

Studies have shown that children of divorce commonly suffer from low self-esteem but a strong performance in school can help offset such feelings. A strong start to the school year can set a family on a

smooth course for the entire year.

Cooperation among co-parents in the summer can set a positive tone for fall, spring, and beyond.

Director Lavinia Jadhwani brings the heart-wrenching story of Vietgone to life with a fresh perspective of boldness and sexiness. Vietgone will have you laughing one moment, bobbing your head to the rhythms and beats in another, and in pure joy and feeling the pain of this romance and comedy.

Playwright Qui Nguyen’s humor, which is a part of his personality, is precisely placed in this play to bring just the right amount of joy, laughter, and thrills. Thank you, Mommy Nguyen, for helping him see that his delightful character was needed to bring this play to life.

All of the actors in “Vietgone” do a remarkable job and make this

play believable and worth a trip to Writers Theatre. The chemistry between Aurora and Quang was brilliant, and Emjoy Gavino as the mother almost stole the show with her performance. Please pay special attention to the messages delicately inserted into the play. They are a refreshing reminder that we need to come together regardless of our differences.

Connie Simms-Kincaid of 5 Loaves Eatery, located in Chicago’s Chatham Neighborhood at 405 East 75th Street, told us, “5 Loaves doesn’t necessarily sell soul food, but food for the soul… and you’re going to know someone cared about you that day to make such great tasting food.”

While 5 Loaves Eatery may be small in structure, it offers big and bold flavors, displays great charm Connie and is a well-established fixture in the Simms-Kincaid Chatham Community.

Let us begin with 5 Loaves Turkey Cristo which, essentially, is a Monte Cristo sandwich. But, instead of ham and cheese, it is made with turkey and cheese. Whole grain wheat bread is soaked in an egg and milk mixture; this creamy brew is loaded with tender and smoky slices of turkey, a blend of cheddar and Swiss cheese and is fried till golden brown. Powdered sugar is lightly dusted on top, adding a sweet component to this savory sandwich. It is complemented with a side of thick raspberry dipping sauce. The combination of these flavor profiles delivered a “delish-ofa-dish” that walloped our taste buds. The gooey cheese holds the turkey in place, while the bread is like an unspiced French toast. The powdered sugar and raspberry dipping sauce adds sweetness that really rounds out this sandwich. The end result is nothing short of spectacular. Once you try this masterfully prepared sandwich, you’ll find yourself craving it, inspiring a return to 5 Loaves for your Turkey Cristo fix!

Next up was the Catfish Po’ Boy which came with a house-made honey mustard dipping sauce. This mammoth New Orleans classic was very impressive, indeed.

This 5 Loaves po’ boy was served on a hoagie roll with garden-fresh onions and tomatoes. But, make no mistake about it, the sweet, succulent catfish was definitely the star of the show. We were amazed at how much fried catfish comes with their po’ boy. This po’ boy can easily feed two.

Now on to some breakfast items, starting with 5 Loaves Lemon Zest Pancakes and Homemade Buttermilk Syrup.

The lemon zest was not overpowering but added a citrus backdrop to a fluffy and light pancake. The buttermilk syrup had plenty of flavor and wasn’t too sweet which bode well due to the fact that the pancakes came with a generous sprinkling of powdered sugar. When poured over the pancakes, the buttermilk syrup soaked right through, creating moistness similar to that of a tres leches cake.

Not everyone knows how to prepare a proper Salmon Croquette. Such is not to be said of 5 Loaves – they do an admirable job. They offer two options, grilled or

The salmon-to-binder ratio was on-point, allowing the salmon to shine through. The croquettes were seasoned well, noting that our personal preference is croquettes prepared with diced green pepper and onions. The spicy option has a nice “kick” but nothing that any heat connoisseur can’t handle.

We also suggest trying 5 Loaves Fried Chicken Wings with their house-made ranch dressing (yum), Smothered Potatoes (yummy), French Toast (yumlicious), and make sure to wash it all down with their Tiger Woods Sweet Tea. This past week, some old tweets surfaced of Sox’s top pitching prospect Michael Kopech dropping “the N-word” numerous times and using homophobic slurs that have us wondering “what the hell was he thinking?” Kopech quickly addressed the controversy as “not the type of person he is now,” but my quarrel is less with Kopech and more with the White media members who have seemed satisfied with that explanation and are willing to sweep the incident under the rug and ultimately place the responsibility of holding Kopech accountable for his comments to journalists of color. I refuse to believe that in 2018, you need me, a Black journalist to explain that tweeting out “nigga” as a young White man is not only problematic but extremely stupid no matter what age you are at the time. When these things happen, it’s too lazy to just look for the nearest Black teammate or sportswriter. It’s time for White sportswriters to stop letting these pitchers off the hook just because they are enamored by the fact that they throw a 100mph fastball.

Kopech thought he cleaned his tweets by deleting them but learned just like the others how the social media world we live in truly works. Once you put it out there...

It’s OUT THERE! Now I’m sure we’ve all said/

The fact of the matter is...most “twitter fingers” can sit behind the keyboard and just fire away insults/ insensitive remarks without having to worry about any scrutiny. Professional baseball players can’t! In the words of the great Herman Edwards....DON’T PRESS SEND! Premature posting comes with repercussions especially for professional athletes, entertainers and anyone under the “microscope.” Twitter has been around long enough now that you’d think people would use better judgement. But then again one of my favorite lines is “man you never know what people be thinking!”

Well for Hader, Newcomb, etc. now Kopech, the social media world will let you know exactly what they’re thinking. Hopefully these guys have learned a valuable life lesson... DON’T PRESS SEND! What’s more amazing than the tweets themselves are the people who screenshot the tweets before they’re deleted and have them on deck when the moment of truth comes. There’s always somebody lurking..

Naggy hangs his hat on “Practice?” *Allen Iverson voice* Week 3 of the preseason is usually reserved as the last “dress rehearsal” before the start of the regular season, but new head coach Matt Naggy touched a nerve with some Bears fans with his decision to sit his starters, including QB Mitch Trubisky, for their 3rd preseason game vs the Kansas City Chiefs. After beating the Chiefs 27-20, he had this to say about his decision to not play his starters just 2 weeks before they face Green Bay in Week 1. “I hear it, but I don’t believe it right now in regards to where we’re at. We’re at almost 2,000 snaps right now in practice. Team snaps and OTAs ‘til now we’re at 2,000 snaps. And so for somebody to tell me that 25 to 30 reps [in a preseason game] is going to go ahead and make him a better player Week 1, Week 2, Week 3 is ... it’s not going to happen. This offense does take time; it doesn’t mean that for him he can’t be successful, but 25 to 30 plays regardless of just Mitch, we’ve had a lot of reps, and we get quality reps in practice. I understand it.”

Markeese Jacobs decommits from Kansas Four-star recruit and the consensus #1 player in Chicago’s class of 2019 hoopers, Uplift’s Markeese Jacobs has officially reopened his recruitment after verbally committing to Kansas University almost two years ago. Florida St. and Nebraska wasted no time to submit offers to the newly available 2019 point guard. At the time of his commitment to the Jayhawks, Jacobs told the Tribune that he viewed it as an “opportunity of a lifetime.” Now, with more schools lining up to offer scholarships, he sites “leadership” as the area of his game that he must improve the most.
