Mechell Daniel Boynes was born on April 29, 1939 to Samuel and Bessie Boynes. He was the youngest of three children, born and raised in Chicago, IL. Mechell attended DuSable High School and graduated with honors from Olive-Harvey College with an Associate of Arts degree in Education. He pursued his advance education at Chicago State University receiving a Bachelor’s degree in Corrections with a minor in Psychology and Master Degrees in Counseling and Early Childhood Education.

As a young man, Mechell worked for the Chicago Transit Authority as a train conductor. In 1965, he joined the Chicago Police Department working as a Patrol Officer and later a Youth Officer until his retirement in 1995. While working for the Chicago Police Department, he was involved in the African American Police League. After retirement he continued to be involved with the retired police officers through Brothers and Sisters Banded Together and The Guardians Police Organization. The spectrum of his additional professional experience includes Chicago Public Schools, the City Colleges of Chicago and the Christian Community Health Center.

Mechell was baptized at an early age at Ebenezer Baptist Church and was active in a variety of youth ministries. He joined Trinity United Church of Christ in 1992. He participated in an array of ministries and activities that impacted the community and improved the lives of others. His passion to be a catalyst of change in the community also transcended to his work with his beloved fraternity, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated.

Mechell became ill in 2014 and fought a valiant fight until Jesus welcomed him to eternity on Sunday, November 29, 2015.
