The Heat is On: Violence Heats up Chicago’s Summer By: Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer

The cool days of summer pale to the continued climate of violence in Chicago. The unnecessary bloodshed has worn the hairlines down to the root of many residents and businesses. We are faced with so many questions yet the answers are clearly there—do we want to face them? Since the start of 2015, there have been a reported 225 murders. This past 4th of July holiday weekend included 55 shootings and 9 killings alone. Although the statistics are down from 82 shot with16 fatally wounded during this same time last year, the tragedy left families without loved ones during a time when most families come together to celebrate. A student and aspiring musician, Vonzell Baker was gunned down in the same park that was named after slain student, Hadiya Pendleton. He was 17 and a member of the Metropolitan Apostolic Community Church where he was also the drummer in the church choir. This week he was to start a new job at McDonalds on King Drive. On Sunday night, the nephews of Illinois State Senator Mattie Hunter (3rd District), John Hunter (25) and Willie Hunter (31) were gunned down in a vehicle crash. They had recently relocated to St. Louis two years ago and were visiting family back home when they were fatally shot in the Auburn Gresham community. A statement was released by Senator Hunter’s office. “My family would like to thank everyone for the prayers and support we’ve received. We are heartbroken and saddened by this tragic and senseless loss of life. My family is no different than any other family, and far too many of us have lost family members to the violence that continues to plague our communities. I would ask everyone to join me in praying for an end to this violence and the gun epidemic that is killing our families and friends. It has to end.”

One of the most difficult to accept was the death of 7-year old, Amari Brown who was fatally shot while playing with other children in front of his father’s home in the Humboldt Park neighborhood Saturday night. The young victim’s father, Antonio Brown was briefly held and released in police custody due to his multiple arrest history and gang affiliation. The CPD believed the bullet was intended for him but there is speculation that a close associate of Brown’s was the target—not him. Community activists and some long standing residents believe a great deal of these shootings are not random—they are intended for a specific target but are taking innocent lives. Although, Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Superintendent of the Chicago Police Department Garry McCarthy believe illegal guns on the streets is a major contributor, it is not the root of the problem. Community leader, Pastor Jedidiah Brown believe over the years, the decay of the Black family has lead to many of the problems we are facing today with young people. It’s not just a gang problem, it’s a societal epidemic. “You have to be willing to build a relationship because this label of ‘gang’ causes the community that could actually change this to ignore them, and box them in. Now we have the cycle of violence, and it’s a continual decay in society, because they have children who watch their children who are still kids ‘playing’ grown,” he said. There was a time that gangs were as organized as any other blue collar union in Chicago—each group had a role and known territory. Every tier in the organization answered to a higher ranking member who earned their position to oversee agreed pockets of territories throughout the city and people residing in these areas were very clear who dominated, which area by the tags on the buildings. The game has changed and over time, many of the known leaders are either six-feet under or incarcerated; leaving a new generation of fractions without the same code or discipline.

2 July 8-14, 2015 • THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

What seemed like a way to rid the problem by the feds and the Daley administration is now a plague that the current Emanuel administration and Superintendent McCarthy can’t find a serum to annihilate. Ameena Matthews has made it her life’s mission to tackle this head-on. She’s known nationally and lauded for her work as well as respected among many on each side of the fence to help defuse problems before they escalate between gang fractions and sometimes preventing further conflict between them and the Chicago Police Department. A former facilitator of Cease Fire, she started “Pause for Peace” with the mantra she relays to young people--’Don’t let 30 seconds of rage change your life forever.’ One of these situations occurred a couple of weeks ago with a South Shore man, Alfontus Cockingham known to neighbors as Nunu was shot and killed by a Chicago Police officer off of 71st and Merrill. The police said a gun was found on the same corner but conflicting stories tell another side of the incident. The 23-year old victim was deaf in one ear and had earphones in the other ear. He was told the police were behind him, upon knowing this, bystanders said the young man immediately held his hands up, still holding his iPod. Nunu paused, held up his hands—the “Don’t Shoot,” signal. He was fatally shot several times. “Four days ago (from 7.6.15), his family had to make a decision to take him off of life support because Northwestern Hospital said his organs were about to shut down. He wanted to be an organ donor. His mother died at 32, he died at 23,” Matthews said. “How can I as an advocate – a strong peace advocate make sure the young guys don’t cross the line? Ask for peace when there is no justice. Give them the police report. The police never gave the family a hard copy.” We reached out to the Chicago Police Department for an interview and received no response. Chicago Summer , Page 14

Burning Black Churches and Flying Confederate Flags By Robert T. Starks Defender Contributing Writer

After Roof’s rampage in Charleston, Blacks called to remove the Confederate flag from government buildings and other public places. We were reminded of the bloodstained history of racial violence that has defined this nation. We were not surprised to learn that Dylann Roof identified himself as a white nationalist with hated for

Black people. Thus, he chose the most historic Black institution in the state to start a civil war. All Roof’s actions were verified through ramblings on his social media outlets where we find that he had wrapped himself in the Confederate flag and denounced federal government as illegitimate. While some have branded Roof a terrorist extremist, many believe that he reflects the beliefs of too many white Americans who may or may not resort to violence. This

belief is supported by the fact that more than a million dollars have been raised through social media for his legal defense. The horrific violence by whites against Blacks began with the capture and enslavement of Africans and continues today. The recent terrorism of police brutality and murders of unarmed Black men is a continuation of that violence. Black churches became a prime target of slave owners because they saw them as places where the enslaved would organize to liberate themselves. In an article published by Mashable, entitled America’s long, ugly history of burning Black churches, this history is detailed. We are reminded that in 1822 Demark Vesey one of the founders of Mother Emanuel A.M.E. who led a revolt against slavery in Charleston was hanged and the original building was burned to the ground. Philadelphia was the city in which Richard Allen and Absalom Jones founded the A. M. E. Church in 1787 (the state of Pennsylvania abolished slavery in 1780). And because of the white resentment of Blacks in that city, between 1825 and 1850 six Black churches were burned and at least four people died in these attacks. Because Cincinnati, Ohio (Ohio was a non-slave holding state) had attracted many free Blacks in early the 1800’s, between August 15th and August 22nd of 1829 white resentment sparked massacres of Black neighborhoods and destroyed Black churches, homes and Black businesses. Reportedly some 1000 Blacks left the city as a result. In 1863 in the midst of the Civil War during the so-called Draft Riots in New York City white terrorists because of their refusal to fight in a war to end slavery, burned a Black orphanage killing and injuring Black children. At the height of the Civil Rights Movement Americans witnessed more church burnings. According to historian Taylor Branch, Pillar of Fire: America in the King Years, 1963-65, “During the Summer of 1964 bombings terrorized and threaten Black lives almost every other day in Mississippi.” The greatest terrorist attack in this period occurred in 1963 when KKK members bombed the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Ala. and killed four little beautiful Black girls

with promising lives. Between 1970 and 1980 five Black churches were recorded as being burned in Virginia, South Carolina and New York City. In 1995 during the presidency of Bill Clinton there were reports of almost 60 Black churches burned. President Clinton passed a Federal Advisory Commission to study these burnings and by 1996 the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (A.T.F.) investigated some 37 cases of arson in the South. In 1996 Congress passed the Arson Prevention Act that gave protection against church burnings. From 1997 and 2000 some 945 churches were set afire, mostly in the south. In 2006 four churches burned down in one day in rural Alabama and five in nearby Bibb County, Mississippi. 2010 recorded the conviction of two white terrorists who burned Black churches, one in Ohio and the other in Texas. Both were members of white nationalist groups. Therefore, when we witness the six Black churches that have been burned since the massacre of June 17th at Mother Emanuel, we cannot be surprised. Again, white violence against Blacks is endemic to the history of the nation. At the Civil War’s end, the KKK was established in 1866 and had membership in all of the South by 1870. This organized terrorist group founded by Nathan Bedford Forrest in Pulaski, Tenn., was an outgrowth of the slave patrollers who were men hired by plantation owners to patrol the plantation to prevent enslaved Blacks from escaping slavery and if they were successful, capture them and bring them back to the plantation. The KKK wore white sheets to indicate “white purity” in contrast to Blacks, Jews, Catholics, and immigrants declared as enemies of the pure white race. They rode on horseback bearing the cross and in night rallies they set it afire while repeating their pledge to fight to purify America. From its birth, the Confederate flag of the Confederate States was used as the immediately recognized symbol of their intention to stop any attempt on the part of Blacks to be free and progress. ComED Launches Summer Internship Program, Hires 250 Students By Elaine Edwards Two hundred fifty students will be hired by ComEd for its annual summer internship program providing local teens with hands on job training and career experience. As a leader in the corporate arena ComEd/ Commonwealth Edison Company, a unit of Chicago based Exelon Corporation is committed to engaging its future workforce and therefore partners with a number of schools and nonprofit organizations to extend to local students the opportunity to participate and receive invaluable work experience in preparation for their future as members of the adult workforce. Such experience come through internships, apprenticeship opportunities and other educational programs ComEd offers. “We are developing our workforce of the future by engaging young people in our business and introducing them to new career possibilities,” said Anne Pramaggiore, president and CEO of ComEd. “We do this by reaching out to our own communities to build on talent of our local youth. We are truly a local company; our employees work and live in the communities we serve.” More than 150 college and high school students will be assigned to various departments across the company for a three-moth period as part of ComEd’s summer internship program. These selected students who participate gain hands-on working experience that they can take back to the classroom when they return in the fall. Just knowing how to listen and hear another’s opinion and to be

participated in last year’s summer program will return to work as interns this summer in a position that reflects the advanced skill level and commitment they have demonstrated throughout their involvement in the program. Taft High school student and After School Matters participant, David Delgado, said, “I learned about

the history of electricity and how to build a microgrid. Beyond that, I learned teamwork and also had the opportunity to be a leader.” ComEd is the nation’s leading competitive energy provider, with approximately 7.8 million customers providing 3.8 million across northern Illinois, or 70 percent of the state’s population.

E NOTES By Kai EL’Zabar

Defender Executive Editor

Would America Accept A Nazi Flag Flying If I were Jewish can you imagine me having a discussion about whether or not to fly or not fly the Nazi Flag in America? It’s a relative comparison to what has become an ongoing discussion in America around the Confederate flag. One would think that a flag that represented the Confederate States, which in an act of treason actually fought against the Union would be banned simply for that reason alone. Historians phrase the cause of secession as either the threat to restrict or end slavery by the Republicans, or that a restriction on states’ rights regarding slave ownership in the territories prompted southern states to withdraw from the Union. The “states rights” argument refers to one of two factors: the right claimed by the states for their citizens to take slaves where they wanted (the main cause of the secession the seven cotton states in winter 186061), or second, the right of states to be free of federal invasion, which was the main cause of the secession of the four border states in spring 1861. Four of the seceding states, the Deep South states of South Carolina, Mississippi, Georgia, and Texas, issued formal declarations of causes, each of which identified the threat to slaveholders’ rights as the cause of, or a major cause of, secession. The Confederate flag no matter how you look at it has no place in a United States of America government facility. The flag should remind the country of its 11 states that formed the secessionist government, that precipitated the Civil War — an act of treason against the United States. Understand that The United States (“Union”) held ‘secession’ illegal and refused recognition of the Confederacy. Yet here we are in 2015 having the discussion about what the Confederate flag symbolizes. So at the very end of the day, we have to accept that the Confederate flag that flies symbolizes an attempt to shutdown the United

States of America. Let’s not even bring up the fact that the big dispute was over enslaved Blacks. It was Frederick Douglass who pointed out to Lincoln that the north would always have a problem if the south had slaves because it meant free labor. Reluctantly facing the truth, Lincoln emancipated slaves. So even though the Confederate flag is one of the most controversial, inflammatory icons of American culture the Federal government has always allowed it to fly freely, why? After World War II there was no question about whether or not the Nazi Flag could remain flying freely in Germany or else where in Europe to represent German heritage and those Nazi’s who fought bravely in the war because it was quite clear that it represented Nazism. The Nazi ideology developed several hypotheses concerning race. Nazis claimed to scientifically measure a strict hierarchy of human race; the “master race” was said to be the most pure stock of the Aryan race, which was narrowly defined by the Nazis as being identical with the Nordic race, followed by other sub-races of the Aryan race. At the bottom of this hierarchy were “parasitic” races (of non-”Aryan” origin) or (“sub-humans”), which were perceived to be dangerous to society. In Nazi literature, the term ‘sub-human was applied to the Slavs, including Russians, Serbs, and ethnic Poles. Nazi ideology viewed Slavs as an inferior non-Aryan group, who were fit only for extermination and enslavement. About two million non-Jewish Poles were killed by Nazi Germany. After the Slavs, lowest of all in the Nazi racial policy were Gypsies and Jews, who were both eventually deemed to be “unworthy of life” and to be exterminated during the Holocaust. The 20th century German Nazi Party made extensive use of graphic symbolism, especially the Hakenkreuz (swastika), which was used as its principal symbol and, in the form of the swastika flag, became the state flag of Nazi Germany standing for it’s racist ideology. The ideology symbolized by the Nazi flag that resulted in some 6 million Jews murdered. To fly the Nazi flag means that you condone all that it symbolizes and what occurred as a consequence of the ideology behind its symbolism. So, it does not fly. The same holds true for the Confederate flag, which still flies high above the South Carolina Statehouse, and throughout the south. It doesn’t matter that it may represent many things to many people like pride in relatives that fought for what they believed in when what they believed in was slavery and the right to own slaves and be the absolute law over them. It was wrong. Wrong! The slave trade imported between 9.6 and 10.8 million Africans who arrived in the Americas. About 500,000 Africans were imported into what is now the U.S. between 1619 and 1807-- Approximately 1.2 – 2.4 million Africans died during their transport to the New World. More died soon upon their

President/Publisher: Cheryl Mainor arrival. Their life as slaves was one of abuse and constant terrorism. And the only reason the Confederate flag is acceptable is because Blacks are not respected or valued even today. The terms heritage and culture, have been thrown around a lot recently by Americans living in the former Confederacy to defend their sick twisted clinging to a flag symbolizing white supremacy and treason against the United States of America. Southerners are quick to claim that the Confederate flag, has nothing whatsoever to do with either white supremacy (racism) or treason. In their estimation they know it’s is a lie, the Confederate flag is just a symbol of Southern heritage and culture. However, that was never what the flag symbolized and there is no better reference to what the flag stands for than the words of the treasonous racist who designed it.

The white supremacist who designed the Confederacy’s flag(s)—William T. Thompson, like Hitler gave the definitive reason why every Republican, KKK member, and so-called Southern heritage advocate still supports flying that symbol of treason and racism. Thompson was proud to admit, “As a people we are fighting to maintain the heavenly ordained supremacy of the white man over the inferior or colored race; a white flag would thus be emblematical of our cause. Such a flag would be a suitable emblem of our young confederacy, and sustained by the brave hearts and strong arms of the south, it would soon take rank among the proudest ensigns of the nations, and be hailed by the civilized world as THE WHITE MAN’S FLAG.” And so it is exactly that. The Confederate flag is a direct insult to both Blacks and the United States. Chicago and suburbs $1

Tamia: By Mary L. Datcher

Defender Senior Staff Writer

We’ve come a long way since women first questioned balancing the affairs of mother, wife and the career woman. Since the emergence of women in full force as career women, they have given ‘balancing act’ a new meaning and breath of life. Tamia Hill exemplifies the rare breed and proudly sports the ‘S’ for Superwoman on her chest. With a new album release, “Love Life”, which hit stores in June, she is making the rounds on her promo tour to revisit fans, and nurture industry relationships. Many that have contributed to her music career when her first hit single, “You Put a Move On My Heart” was released in 1995. Since her last album, “Beautiful Surprise”, Tamia secured a partnership deal with Def Jam Music under her independent label, Plus 1 Music Group to release “Love Life”. Although she’s had a successful run on an independent record label, she has always conducted business like a major label, understanding the importance of extending a broader outreach under the new business model. “Well, you know certainly all of this encompasses the fact in the way that we sell music and the way that people consume music has changed since the beginning when I first started. Artists were given six-album deals. I’m just on my sixth album right now, so can you imagine? When you bought the album from your local record store, and you sat with it.” she said. Artist’s lives have become of interest and must compete for that popularity space. The more excitement you bring to the table the more likely the fan base will follow what the artist is doing or up to. Social media has changed the landscape making it an entirely different game. Tamia continues, “You read the credits inside to see who they knew as well as the ‘thank yous’. Now, you can have a top song and a number one hit and we may not know what you look like. The problem as an artist is in order to have longevity and have a career you need to get people interested into who you are—they want to hear what you have to say. They have to be interested in following you not only because you’re hot on the radio.” Being nominated six times for a Grammy, the Canadian born singer knows all too well the evolving changes in the music business. She explains. “As we know, music changes, tastes change, stations change. That is not something that an artist can rely on as a career. The way that we consume music and the way artists are introduced to the public has changed a lot.” With a multitude of hit singles from Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for “You’ve Put A Move On My Heart”; Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group with Vocal for “Slow Jams”, which she performed with Babyface and Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals for her work with Brandy, Gladys Knight and Chaka Khan on the single “Missing You” from the Set It Off soundtrack as well as being nominated for her fourth Grammy in 1999 for the soulful duet with Eric Benet, “Spend My Life With You” which earned her a 2000 NAACP Image Award. Working on “Love Life” was a different process that she felt brought out different emotional levels of expression for her. On this project she worked with several producers, Shep Crawford, Quad Kelly and Polo – each bringing something fresh and unique to compliment her vocal style. “I let the music guide me and a lot of times, it’s just conversation. The musician is playing some kind of chord that makes me feel a type of way that brings out a certain type of lyric. It just depends. With Shep for example, I called him at the tenth hour when I was finishing “Love Life” and www.chicagodefender.com

Balancing Love, Life and Music

I was pressing it the next day.” she said. “I woke up and I said, “I have to re-make this song called, “Black Butterfly” because of all the things that’s going on in the world. It’s just a song that I love. I think it’s a beautiful song and Denise Williams did a great job.” The first single “Sandwich and A Soda” is currently receiving radio airplay but radio stations have been choosing their own favorites, which includes her rendition of “Black Butterly”. Growing up in Windsor, Canada, across the bridge from Detroit, she often listened some of the best voices in Soul music. “Certainly, having Detroit so close and the Motown era and the singers that we know that are from Detroit. Whether it’s The Winans, Anita Baker, Aretha Franklin--all of Motown DeBarge, Michael Jackson to Diana Ross--it was great growing up so close to the border. I feel that I got the best of both worlds. I was influenced by Canadian music as well, Bryan Adams, and all of those things,” she adds. Outside of her incredible career as a singer, songwriter and entertainer— her first job is mom and wife. Married to retired NBA basketball star, Grant Hill—the couple have two daughters and continue to be involved in several charities through The Tamia and Grant Hill Foundation. Although, it’s a challenge to juggle several hats, she takes it all in stride. “I think it’s important to take a breath and take a beat everyday. I don’t know if we ever find the balance. I’m not sure. We just continue to try to find balance in what we’re doing. It’s a balancing act and I think that’s what a lot of working moms are doing. We’re all trying to create this ‘balancing act’ and sometimes it can get out of whack and it’s crazy. You pick the balls up and start juggling again. I don’t know if you ever can achieve balance.” Tamia will go on her first tour since she hit the road in 2012 with R.Kelly in mid-August. Once the U.S. tour is completed, she’s excited to continue the second leg performing overseas for European fans.

Being in the music business for 20 years, we asked her what advice would she tell her younger self, understanding what she knows today. “It’s all about learning as much as you can about the music business. So much is going on and forever changing. A little bit is about talent or if you can sing. There are a lot of great singers and performers out there and haven’t had the longevity out here.” She adds, “It’s also about learning as much as you can in any other business. You wouldn’t start a clothing line or open a store without knowing as much as you can about the business? It’s not always about the talent-- it’s so important to know as much as you can which will help you in the long run.”

Shutdown Heats Up

CTA from Page 5 Black residents feel good to see their community members in business. Chris & Cedric Newsstand will provide the Woodlawn community and CTA riders with the latest news, magazines and more,” Montgomery said. “As longtime resident of the area, we are looking forward to the opportunity to serve our community by keeping everyone up-to-date on the latest events.” Liquids 1, LLC will be operated as a juice bar by owner Donald Grayson Jr. who successfully ran a juice bar while attending Ottawa University in Kansas when pursuing his Master’s in Business Administration. Grayson is a Chicago native, and this will be his first business start-up in the area. The juice bar will fill a concession space at the Cottage Grove station that has been vacant .since April 2013. Grayson said he hopes that Liquids 1 will bring a healthy option for people in the community.

“I grew up on the southeast side of Chicago and I have been riding the Green Line my whole life,” Grayson said. “I’m truly excited to be able to help so many people in the neighborhood by offering something healthy.” The Chris & Cedric Newsstand lease is a three-year term with a net present value calculated at $4,194.17. The Liquids I lease is a 10-year lease with a net present value calculated at $23,300.97. Both leases hold two five-year options and reflect CTA’s effort to eliminate month-to-month leases and secure more long-term leases, which are mutually beneficial to the CTA, CTA tenants and the surrounding community. Revenue generated from retail leases help boost CTA’s non-farebox revenue and provide customers and the surrounding neighborhoods with additional amenities and services that help to boost local neighborhood economies and very little bit helps.

Illinois State Capital

By Maze Jackson Defender Political Editor

on his Turnaround Agenda, he will balance the budget, which will have severe impacts on the Black community. The three largest areas of spending in the State Budget are Medicaid, pension payments, and education. While Medicaid is often a political lightning rod, it is a revenue generator for the state, with fifty cents on every dollar being reimbursable by the federal government. K-12 education is a priority for both parties, and the pension payments, which are the Illinois’ biggest liability, are constitutionally protected, meaning the state has no choice but to pay. Ironically, the pension crisis can be blamed on the Illinois General Assembly choosing to skip pension payments in the past and the higher interest rates that came along with refinancing those payments. The next largest bucket is human services. Because human services is discretionary, recipients are often easy to disregard, and it is such a large line item in the budget, human services is an easy target for Rauner who is looking for big savings and fast. While he and Madigan fight over torts and workers compensation, the real battle for the Black Caucus is saving summer jobs, childcare assistance, and anti-violence initiatives in the communities that need it most. The Illinois Legislative Black Caucus has mounted an unprecedented public awareness campaign to engage the Black community in this fight “We, as the Black community, must become more involved in understanding how government affects us. Our community receives far less tax dollars than white communities, and because of that our community has to support legislators who defend and fight for what little we have funding-wise in all areas. Specifically, those programs that help our most vulnerable, protect and educate our children, and spur economic development in our community. Our legislators must know that we will reward their courage,” said Malcolm Weems, Former Chief of Staff of the Governor’s Office of Management and Budget and currently of Weemsway Consulting and Senior Advisor at Dentons US LLP.

July 1st has come and gone and Illinois is in the midst of its first shutdown, but most Illinoisans do not yet feel the impact of the doomsday scenario that was forecast. Business is running as usual, state workers have continued to report to work, and state facilities remain open. The shutdown has turned out to be uneventful as shutdowns go, but things have begun to get interesting. On June 30th, in anticipation of vetoing the latest budget passed by the Democratic controlled Illinois General Assembly, Governor Bruce Rauner (R) ordered state employees to report to work, reassuring them that they would continue to be paid. Comptroller Leslie Munger (R), who is responsible for issuing state checks, requested an opinion from Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan (D), who ruled that Munger could NOT pay state workers without a budget. In an effort to provide some relief for the state, the Illinois General Assembly attempted unsuccessfully to pass a temporary 30-day budget while negotiations continued. Rauner has stated on various occasions that he will not sign a “phony” budget or temporary budget. Democrats argue that the budget crisis cannot be fixed without new revenue (tax increase). Rauner counters that he will not consider new revenue (tax increase) without the structural reforms he calls his “Turnaround Agenda.” Rauner’s Turnaround Agenda includes workers compensation and tort reform. Both are issues that Rauner says would make Illinois more attractive to business. With supermajorities in the House and Senate, the General Assembly could override Rauner’s veto, and give the Governor a “phony” (unbalanced) budget, meaning a budget that gives the Governor the authority to spend money (appropriates) more money (revenue) than the state actually has available to spend. While that is the way business has been done in Springfield for decades, Rauner ran on a campaign to balance the state budget and clean up Springfield. He maintains that if Democrats do not negotiate 8 July 8-14, 2015 • THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

Burning Black churches from Page 4 The most interesting correlation in this history is that of Christianity (the church, the cross and the philosophy of white supremacy) and violence. It has been said that more violence and slaughter has been committed in the name of religion than in any other cause. That is a fact in the American case since slavery was justified by the white supremacist interpretation of the Bible and subsequently, the beating, torture, rape and murder of enslaved African people because they were the “chosen ones” and Blacks were “cursed” by that same God! Incidentally, this is the same line of reasoning that was used by Adolf Hitler and the Nazis, as well as, the current group that calls itself ISIS. In each case the terrorists have wrapped themselves in a flag that they claim is a part of their heritage and symbolizes their mission. What a triangle of mayhem and destruction based on religion, flag, and race! The current spate of church burnings emerged as a direct reaction to the renewed call for the removal of the Confederate Flag. To be sure the defenders of the Confederate flag will continue to fight with the triangle of terrorism that

they have used since the inception of the nation. More Black churches will be burned and more Black people will be murdered. However, the Black community is determined to do everything in their power to make sure that the perpetrators are caught and punished and these dastardly deeds stop. Accordingly, Cornell William Brooks, President of the NAACP has said “For centuries, African-American churches have served as the epicenter of survival for many in the African-American community. As a consequence, these houses of faith have historically been the targets of violence. We will use every tool in our advocacy arsenal to preserve these beloved institutions.” Two of Chicago’s Black Congressmen, Danny Davis (D-7th) and Bobby Rush (D-1st), have pledged their support for any federal government action that is necessary. Lastly, “Removing the flag is long overdue. But for the crucifixion to turn into a resurrection will require removing the flag agenda, not just the flag, addressing the substance, not just the symbol,” says Rev. Jesse Jackson, Rainbow PUSH Coalition.

Melanie Whaley offers her “Essential Elements of entrepreneurship Tatiana-Walk-Morris Defender Contributing Writer

In a way, Melanie Whaley was born and bred for entrepreneurship. Whaley, owner of Essential Elements at 1640 E. 87th St., has been running the women’s clothing, jewelry and footwear boutique since it opened in 2007. She caught the business bug from her parents, who also ran multiple enterprises including a janitorial business, a restaurant and several clothing stores. These ventures helped to put her and her brother through college, and her father instilled a value for education as well as business ownership. And though she studied communication design at the University of Illinois - Chicago and later became a teacher, she found her way to the fashion business. “I ended up going to the Board of Education and teaching preschool for 12 years and coming back full circle to this,” Whaley said. “I was an excellent teacher, but this is me. I love people. I love bringing smiles to these women’s faces.” Essential Elements sits among other Black-owned businesses on Chicago’s South Side, but it’s known for unique threads made in the U.S. and abroad including clothing from Germany, Denmark, Lithuania and Croatia. Whaley said she tries to balance high-quality garments with moderate price points, but it isn’t easy. Some of her options are more high-end -- some fetching up to $400 -- so she avoids trendier options and instead offers customers fashion staples they can wear as often as they like. When looking for potential store items, quality and craftsmanship are key. She said she looks for clues such as how a garment has been sewn -- or in the case of shoes, the quality of leather, how the shoe was manufactured and how the leather was dyed.

Getting the right clothing apparel is just one of many challenges. In addition to traveling to trade shows and working with vendors, she also has to juggle other duties like managing the staff and taking care paperwork on the back end, which makes it difficult at times to keep her energy up. “Everyday is a challenge in a sense that to whom much is given, much is required,” she said. “Not saying that the challenge is bad, but [it’s] just continually evolving.” To keep everything moving smoothly, she has help from her staff as well as her family. Her brother, a State Farm insurance agent, advises her on managing her employees, while her mom helps to package clients’ phone orders and her dad takes them to the post office for shipping, she said. It’s a Family Affair. Currently, the store’s website doesn’t allow for online transactions, but Whaley said she’s working to change that by getting a new website while taking phone orders for customers who can’t make it to the physical store. Though there is only one Essential Elements location, it draws the attention of shoppers throughout the city, nation

and from all walks of life. Whaley said it’s fun to meet celebrities when they visit the shop including R. Kelly, Oprah’s mom and Albertina Walker, but she equally appreciates her everyday customers. “I have customers from all over, customers that come from as far as Indianapolis, Evanston, [and] Highland Park all the time,” she said. “My everyday customer who drops by every pay period or every few weeks or so, she’s the bread and butter.” The dollars brought into the store don’t stop there. Given that her customers believe in supporting Black businesses, Whaley said they like the fact that the store hires women in the black community and also gives back to charitable causes such as breast cancer research, a local women’s shelter and even jewelry for local high schoolers’ proms. As for the store’s future, Whaley said she doesn’t plan to expand beyond its current location, though she would like to have a separate storefront for its shoe selection. Rather than opening new boutiques, Whaley said she prefers to keep Essential Elements as a destination boutique and instead focus on building an ecommerce website for clients who want to shop online. It’s the organic experience as well as the clothes that the shoppers love. The ambience. They run into friends and associates as well as meet new people right there in the store. Each year Essential Elements hosts a special end of Summer sales held in it’s parking lot. Shoppers say, that ‘it’s a perfect time to get choice pieces at great prices.’ “Not to say that I’m content, but I just love to be on cruise control,” she said. “I like to continue to bring in exciting brands, and continue to experience the growth of my customers, my customers’ daughters and continue to be a source of light and inspiration in the community.”

Van For Men brings exclusive menswear to the South Side Tatiana-Walk-Morris Defender Contributing Writer

On any given day, Terence VanWade Johnson’s clients may walk into his boutique on Chicago’s South Side to find him dressed down, typically in a pair of blue jeans and a buttoned-down shirt that isn’t too revealing. Do not be beguiled by his casual style. He’s the go to guy for the city’s most exclusive men’s wear. VanWade, a image consultant who advises people and businesses on how to look their best, recently styled the Chosen Few for the Defender’s last front page, photographed by David Jenkins; now owns the VanWade for Men, a men’s wear boutique at 2141 W. 95th St. It’s the third store that he has opened, and he’s hoping the third time’s the charm. His interest in clothing began when he was growing up, leading him to study merchandising and management at the Ray College of Design in Chicago, he said. He credits several mentors who helped him learn the ropes including Susan Glick, vice president of Apparel at Merchandise Mart Properties, and Dorothy Fuller, who were instrumental in helping him enter the business. “Growing up I’ve always been interested in retail and clothing, not being able to have a lot of the [clothing] that I’m able to now, growing up,” he said. “There have been quite a few individuals who’ve been a very big inspiration.” In the beginning of his career, one figure, who was particularly supportive and inspirational to VanWade was Walter Singleton, the owner of Brock’s For Men who VanWade worked for as his first job out of college. VanWade said he accompanied Singleton at trade shows and assisted in buying and merchandising the stores. It was this experience that gave him first-hand knowledge of working www.chicagodefender.com

in retail. “Him being his own person, his own business [and] a black man in today’s society doing what he wants to do … that was a very big inspiration to me to want to do it myself,” VanWade said. From there, he worked his way up in the fashion industry, becoming a personal shopper, working for Back Racks, styling in the men’s couture department for Nieman Marcus and working as a marketing manager at Sears for seven years, he said. After opening -- and subsequently -- closing two women’s clothing stores, VanWade experienced his fair share of challenges in the retail business. The first store flooded four times. The partnership for the second store just didn’t work out. So, VanWade took some time off to recuperate and now is back again. Among the challenges of getting a store up and running are finding financing and getting the right fashions for your cus-

tomers. The key to addressing these obstacles -- patience, he said. “Patience is probably the biggest key to making your business become successful, because it’s not gonna come all at once,” he said. “It’s not gonna come in two months [or] six months. You just gotta have that patience to just wait and do the right thing.” Though some of his options are a bit pricier -- a few of the button-ups are $200 -- he said he considers his store to have fashionably practical clothing. When buying for the store, he shops for a successful man who his image conscious and has “a certain way of life,” he said. VanWade said he’s willing to bring designers into the store, but the quality has to be there, otherwise he won’t look at the products any further. Some see his feedback as negative criticism, but his reputation is also at stake, he said. “I have certain customers in mind when I’m buying,” he said. “ I’m very picky about how the stitching is, how it’s finished inside [and] if it’s lined. To me, if it’s done correctly, you know it’s a quality product.” What sets him apart from other men’s stores is both his selection and exceptional service. Clients can not only find hardto-find goods from Italy or Turkey, they can also get a manicure, a pedicure a hand-picked outfit from VanWade waiting for them and even pick up rare women’s accessories for a wife or girlfriend. Two years ago, VanWade was offered the opportunity to open a men’s boutique in Hyde Park but wasn’t ready to take the chance, he said. If given the opportunity in the future, he would take it. But for now he’s making his cozy, 2nd floor store to look just how he envisioned it would be. “This is just the beginning of a whole other chapter,” he said. “This is exactly how I wanted it.” THE CHICAGO DEFENDER • July 8-14, 2015 11

The Double Duty Players with ESPN Analysis Michael Wilbon and Ken Williams of the White Sox.

The Chicago White Sox host the “Double Duty Classic” Eugene Mcintosh Defender Contributing Writer

There’s nothing like a major league baseball clubhouse! Thirty-five high school players shared the visitors side at US Cellular Field for the 8th annual Double Duty Classic. They all had one thing in common....a dream to one day enter a clubhouse as a big leaguer! They were provided with a golden opportunity Wednesday afternoon as the scouts got to see some great baseball. I’m sure Minnie Minoso and Ted “Double Duty” Radcliffe would be proud. (He was nicknamed “Double Duty” because he played pitcher and catcher in successive games of a doubleheader in the 1932 Negro League World Series) Hosted by the Chicago White Sox, the Double Duty Classic is a showcase that celebrates the history and tradition of Negro League baseball in Chicago and promoting the next generation of inner city players. They come from the Sox Amateur City Elite (ACE) program headed by the Director of Youth Initiative and former Simeon star Kevin Coe. Players were dressed in retro East-West AllStar uniforms honoring past Negro Leaguers and those who played in the historic game at Old Comiskey Park. (Jackie Robinson played in 1945 as a member of the Kansas City Monarchs) There was a special forum held before the game in the Conference Center. It was hosted by sports reporter Julian “JR” Jackson who is featured on CNN’s HLN and JRSportBrief. Special guests at the forum included former White Sox All-Star pitcher James Baldwin, Negro Leagues Baseball Museum President Bob Kendrick, ESPN analyst and Chicagoan Michael Wilbon and the White Sox Executive

Vice President Kenny Williams. Baldwin had one thing to say to the kids...”play the game hard with no regrets, understand it and be professional in your approach. It will give you everything back.” Michael Wilbon echoed the same sentiments and talked about his days growing up playing baseball in the inner city. “I was about 14 years old and I was on the mound feeling good. I threw my best stuff and this short stubby kid had to hit my pitch about 400 yards. That kid turned out to be Hall of Famer Kirby Puckett. That’s when I knew my career was over!” Bob Kendrick has helped restore the NeChicago Summer from Page 2 The ongoing violence that has fueled the city has been reported as the residual of Black and Hispanic youth who ‘gang bang’ and war with one another. Matthews disputes this stereo type because the gang culture has changed—beyond the old school structure. “Stones (Black P. Stone Rangers) are still Stones, GDs (Gangster Disciplines) are still GDs and so on. What is different now is that they are clicking together. They are all rolling together. Our young guys are not ‘gang banging’ and when you really get into the nitty-gritty of the conflict, it’s because often somebody’s girl got into it with somebody else’s girl and they called their guy to beat down that somebody. When this happens, the Chicago Police is called. Of course, to them it’s a ‘gang’ thing.” explains Matthews. As people enjoyed 4th of July festivities from the peaceful outings of the Chosen Few House Picnic in Jackson Park attended by

gro League Baseball Museum’s reputation. It features multi-media computer stations, film exhibits, photographs, bronze sculptures and baseball artifacts. He spoke on how the Negro Leagues helped make baseball the global game that it is. “They would play in Japan and the Spanish leagues for the competition. He also stated that “shin guards and night games started in the Negro Leagues.” Kenny Williams said something I knew resonated with the players. “Don’t take the opportunity for granted because many people before you never had it.” The panel took a few questions from the players, there was a quick lunch and then it was game time.

The Minnie Minoso MVP Award presented by Minnie’s wife Sharon and son Charlie was given to Najee Gaskins who plays at Cienega High in Vail, Arizona. He finished the game 2 for 4 with 2 walks, 3 rbi’s, 3 stolen bases and 2 runs scored. For Mt. Carmel junior standout Jeremy Houston (who committed to Indiana U), this game meant everything to him. “It’s such an honor to play in this game. Learning the history of the Negro Leagues and everything they went through for us to be here means the world to me.” For more info on the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum go to www.nlbm.com

multiple thousands peacefully, and the African Festival of Life in Union Park along with various neighborhood festivals throughout the city—summer is not over. We are reminded that we are a peaceful people on the whole. Yet tensions are still high and there are several variables to finding a solution. Social activist Afrika Porter explains, “I think it’s time out for the big ‘I’s’ and the little ‘you’s’. People are mad about the word ‘Chi Raq’? Unfortunately, we have a history here (that conjures it up) and it’s time to deal with it – there have been people dealing with it. As a mother, I have to consider the fact that my youngest son is 13. He doesn’t go to the park without me. Even when he’s with his father, I still call to check in with them to make sure he’s okay.” she said. On Monday, there were several vigils and demonstrations as a result of the deaths of Amari Brown and Vonzell Banks. Mayor Emanuel attended the press conference on the

front steps of Metropolitan Apostolic Church of God along with Reverend Leon Finney and young students calling for peace. Finney vowed to help and assist young people in the community to have a safe haven with or without financial assistance—it is his mission. Afraid of not being able to assist those in need, Afrika Porter started her own company Afrika Enterprises to have more flexibility in her work schedule. She currently mentors eight young girls, whom she placed in summer jobs. Porter said, “The village is not what it once was either. I see the same people when I go to these community meetings. We have to do some things differently to get more people involved. If I’m seeing the same activists all the time – then we’re talking to each other. It’s the same circle and we need to expand out.” One thing is for sure, it’s our community, our children, our family, our people. So we have to make the change. www.chicagodefender.com

©2015 Donna Battle Pierce

By Donna Battle Pierce As far as I’m concerned, there’s no such thing as a Missouri compromise when it comes to barbecue sauce. My dad and Ollie Gates, the octogenarian-owner of Kansas City-based Gates Bar-B-Q, were buddies back in the 1950’s. So a sauce reminiscent of the molasses thick, deep red, slightly sweet authentic Gates sauce I grew up savoring as my go-to flavor continues to win family taste tests for finishing ribs, brisket, chicken…and even tofu... year round. Living away from the ShowMe state, I no longer stock my cabinet with Mr. Gates’ specific sauces marked by the “strutting man” logo passed down by his parents, Arzelia and George Gates who purchased their first barbecue “stand” on Kansas City’s most famous 18th and Vine intersection in 1946, soon after Mr. Gates became a teenager. Years ago, during a visit from our home in San Francisco Mr. Gates’ offered a strong reminder to cheer for the Chiefs and feed my small son him only Kansas City-style red sauce, adding that childhood introductions made lasting impression when it came to pro-sports allegiances and barbecue sauce. Unfortunately, a famous Atlan-

ta-based cable station swayed my son to grow up cheering for the Braves, but as far as barbecue flavor is concerned, his commitment and devotion has never swayed from Kansas City-style. Last week, I thought of Mr. Gates’ “early-start” wisdom when living in the middle of a big city, without benefit of a balcony or grill, my now grown son offered an enthusiastic thumbs up to these tender meaty chicken legs served from the oven with Kansas Citystyle sauce, cole slaw and “super-mini” biscuits. ONGIEVITY DIET You may ask whether or not there is such a thing as a longevity diet. Increasingly, studies suggest the answer is yes. There have always been certain groups of people around the world who enjoy exceptionally long lives. Imagine the people of Okinawa in the Pacific Islands who have an average life expectancy of more than 81 years. Compare this to 78 in the United States and a worldwide average of just 67. Another group, members of the Seventh Day Adventists, who typically eat vegetarian, outlive their neighbors by four to seven years on average. Residents of the San Blas islands off the coast of Panama very rarely suffer from high blood pressure and heart disease. Obesity is nearly non-existant. Indeed, research shows that their rate of heart disease is only nine per 100,000 people, compared to 83 per 100,000 among nearby Panamanians on the mainland. What some have known for years is now supported by a growing body of evidence, which suggests that diet is one

of the important contributors to longevity and healthy living. Here’s what’s on the menu of people who enjoy long and healthy lives.

Foods for a Healthy Heart Most of us now know to go easy on saturated fat, the kind found in meat and high-fat dairy products. Saturated fats have been shown to raise blood cholesterol levels into the danger zone. Just as important is what you should be eating. Some plant base dieters eliminate all oils including those that are listed as the good oils like olive and

coconut oils.

For heart health and longevity, you should eat: Plenty of fruits and vegetables: Packed with fiber and nutrients, fruits and vegetables are also relatively low in calories. Studies consistently show that diets plentiful in fruits and vegetables help people maintain a healthy weight and protect against cardiovascular disease. Whole grains: Like fruits and vegetables, whole grains pack a lot of nutrition into a low-calorie package. Grains like oats and barley are also rich in a long list of disease-fighting compounds. In 2009, researchers at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in Houston reported that study participants whose diets included plenty of whole grains and fruit cut their heart disease risk by almost half compared to those whose diets favored meat and fatty foods. Findings from more than 161,000 nurses enrolled in the Nurses’ Health Study also show that whole grains protect against type 2 diabetes, a disease that increases the danger of heart disease.
