Daily News… ‘JAPAN’S BEETHOVEN’ ADMITS USING GHOST COMPOSER A deaf composer dubbed «Japan’s Beethoven» confessed Wednesday to hiring someone to write his best-known works, leaving duped broadcaster NHK red-faced, and casting a cloud over a figure skater set to dance to his music in Sochi. Mamoru Samuragochi, 50, shot to fame in the mid-1990s with classical compositions that provided the soundtrack to video games including Resident Evil, despite having had a degenerative condition that affected his hearing. Samuragochi, who also spells his name Samuragoch, became completely deaf at the age of 35 but continued to work, notably producing «Symphony No.1, Hiroshima», a tribute to those killed in the 1945 atomic bombing of the city. In 2001 Time magazine published an interview with him, calling him a «digital-age Beethoven». «I listen to myself,» Samuragochi told the magazine. «If you trust your inner sense of sound, you create something that is truer. It is like communicating from the heart. Losing my hearing was a gift from God.» Samuragochi’s reputation grew when public broadcaster NHK aired a documentary in March last year entitled «Melody of the Soul», in which it showed the musician touring the tsunami-battered Tohoku region to meet survivors and those who lost relatives in the 2011 catastrophe. The film shows Samuragochi playing with a small girl whose mother was killed in the disaster and apparently composing a requiem for her, despite his own struggles with illness. Viewers flocked in their tens of thousands to buy his Hiroshima piece, which became an anthemic tribute to the tsunami-hit region and its determination to get back on its feet, known informally as the symphony of hope. But on Wednesday morning the composer’s life was revealed to have been a fraud, and an NHK anchor offered a fulsome apology for having aired the documentary.

ED CROSS 2013 UPDATES ON 2013 The territorial Delegation of the Red Cross of St. Barths wishes to the entire population all the best for 2014 and would like to thank all the donors for their generosity throughout this year 2013. Donations in clothing, linen, baby equipment and toys are essential for us to finance all or part of our various actions. Evaluation of French Red Cross 2013 activities in St Barths. Hospital of Margency : A donation of e 10,000 was sent in April 2013 to this» Red Cross» hospital located in France and which only welcome seriously ill children and their families coming exclusively from Overseas Territories. Haiti in collaboration with the Lion’s Club who provided us with their container. A large shipment was made in May / June which consisted of 77 boxes of clothing for adults and children and toys + orthopedic equipment and childcare + several tents for 4 to 6 people. Marie- Galante in collaboration with a doctor of the Island. 9 bags of clothes (adults and children) and toys were prepared and sent. Exceptional sales at the clothing shop for the benefit of the Association « Hope for Loucas « on May 7th and 11th, 2013. The delegation was able to hand a e 2,000 check to the association. Toy donations to Dr. Olivo : Toys were donated to Dr. Olivo, Director of the HAD ( Hospital at home) in St Martin and St Barths, during the month of December 2013. All clothing and toys that we receive are sorted and cleaned before being sold or sent. We are a small team of volunteers and we work in a small room. Please make an initial sorting before bringing them to the Red Cross to facilitate our work. Assistance provided in the recreation center «The Zandolis « in collaboration with the Rotary Club. Assistance was offered to this recreation center to enable them to keep their doors open during the summer of 2013 and thus offer holidays to children who stay at the center. The participation of the Red Cross and the Rotary Club was e 3,000 each. Purchase of equipment for the Association «St Barth Handicap» in collaboration with the Rotary Club. Four chairs for disabled were offered. These chairs allow them to go swimming and enjoy the benefits of the sea. The Rotary Club participated for e 6,000 and the Red Cross for e 3,000. The official presentation of these chairs to the Association will be held in the coming weeks and will be announced through the press. Please come! Donate to the French Red Cross of the St. Martin Territorial Delegation. The Delegation of Saint Barths has allocated the sum of e 3,000 to help the functioning of first aid and for the purchase of equipment in St Martin. First Aid : The Delegation has invested e 1,800 in the training of a monitor in Modane which is the official training center of the French Red Cross’s first aid team. First Aid : Defibrillators : The Red Cross has purchased and installed three new defibrillators for a total of e 8,935 on the island in Colombier, Salines and Grand Fond. Do not forget to look for them so you can quickly find them when needed.

Marine mammals mission with AGOA

We are monitoring two colonies of pelicans nesting on Fourchue and Gros islet and the first ones are already healthy. Other births are imminent, some very good news for this specie coming back to St Bartsh after a dramatic episod.
Sea turtle nesting in Saline Saint Barths is part of the AGOA sanctuary created to protect marine mammals in the Caribbean region. The Environment Agency has participated in the AGOA mission in December 2013 to identify marine mammals species in the region at this time of the year. No humpback whale, which provides information on their migration but many dolphins. In addition was observed a whale shark in St Martin! One of St. Barths’ guard was present on both charter boats for the mission. One was found on the waters of Saba and Statia when the other was found between St. Martin, Anguilla and St. Barths according to a well-defined scientific protocol . We will meet in March 2014 for the next mission.

A sea turtle track was reported by a morning walker to the guards on Saline beach in early December! This is a quite rare thing because births are rather expected at this time ... The turtle, identified as a green turtle, has effectively laid on top of the beach away from the vegetation, now we have to wait for about two months to see hatchlings out of the sand if they have not been attacked by predators... Because guards have found the presence of three dogs on the beach that same morning, yet banned since 1986, all with collars, one with his owner. In addition to the health problems associated with excrements, dogs locate turtle nests and dig . Too bad for the turtles…
