2010 Season Outlook

The Chicago State volleyball team enters a new era in 2010 as CSU alum Bob Eskew heads into his first season as the team’s head coach. Eskew welcomes back returns five letterwinners from last season squad that includes three starters and add six newcomers who will be called upon to help the Green and White compete in the Great West Conference.

Setter Senior Hanya Minta (Eden Prairie, Minn.) looks to become CSU’s all-time leader in assists as she ranks third on the school’s career list heading into her fourth season as the team’s starter at setter. Minta averaged a teamleading 2.90 assists per set in addition to averaging 1.73 digs and 0.98 kills per set while leading the team with a .118 hitting percentage.

Outside Hitter The Cougars bring back three players at outside hitter in senior Brittany Hale (South Holland, Ill.), junior Mazvita Maziveyi (Durham, N.C.) and sophomore Rashonda Woods (Chicago, Ill.) while adding two newcomers who look to bring some depth and compete for a spot in the starting rotation. Hale recorded averages of 1.63 digs and 0.69 kills in her first season with the Green and White in addition to recording six kills against Texas-Pan American and 10 digs versus North Dakota. Maziveyi produced a team-leading 29 service aces on the season while ranking second in kills (102 – 1.32 kps) and blocks (24 – 0.31 bps). She posted a career-best 11 kills at NJIT and finished fifth among the Great West leaders in service aces while capturing Academic All-GWC honors. Woods appeared in 10 matches in her first collegiate season while averaging 1.36 digs and 0.23 kills per set last year. She posted a career-best nine digs versus South Dakota in a reserve role at libero. Freshmen Valeria Desiderio (Chicago Heights, Ill.) and Anna Morgan (South Ridge, Wis.) will look to earn starting roles and provide depth for CSU this season after having stellar prep careers.

Middle Blocker The Green and White lone returner at middle blocker is senior Shandella Darring (Chicago, Ill.), who competed in 20 matches as a reserve last season. Darring recorded 12 digs and 10 kills on the year with her best match coming against Lehigh with a career-best three digs and two blocks. WWW.GOCSUCOUGARS.COM

The lone newcomer to the middle blocker corps is senior Emem Obot (Calumet City, Ill.), who comes to CSU after playing for former Cougar Deborah Scott at South Suburban College and ranked among the NJCAA Division II blocking leaders last season.

Libero/Defensive Specialist Two newcomers from the West Coast will battle for the starting position at libero in freshman Mysta Townsell (Gardnerville, Nev.) and junior Leslie Williams (Phelan, Calif.). The Great West Conference

Chicago State volleyball enters its second year as a member of the Great West Conference this fall after spending three years as an NCAA Division I Independent program. The Great West entered a new chapter in its short history in July 2008 when it expanded from a football-only conference to an all-sports conference after inviting three D-I independent schools (NJIT, Texas-Pan American, Utah Valley) and three schools currently transitioning to D-I status (Houston Baptist, North Dakota, South Dakota) to join the conference. CSU later joined the Great West in October 2008 as the conference’s seventh member. During the 2008-09 season, the Great West conducted championship events in Cross Country, Golf, Indoor Track and Field, and Outdoor Track and Field. Baseball, basketball, volleyball, softball, women’s tennis and women’s soccer opened league play during the 2009-10 school year. The volleyball alignment for the Great West will be a 12-match schedule with home-and-home series for all seven teams which will precede the second-annual Great West Conference Championship that will be hosted by CSU at the Emil and Patricia Convocation Center on Nov. 19-21.
