NEWS ITEM OF THE WEEK

NEW LOOK FOR 2013 CHICAGO JAZZ FESTIVAL Aug 29-SEPT 1 IN MILLENNIUM PARK The Chicago Jazz Festival has long been celebrated as the first of the lakefront music festivals, and as it marks its 35th year, the event will move to Millennium Park from festival grounds in Grant Park, August 29-September 1. Performances will also happen in the Chicago Cultural Center. (78 E. Washington) The festival is presented by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events. (DCASE) and programmed in partnership with the Jazz Institute of Chicago. “The Chicago Jazz Festival highlights a genre that is such a part of Chicago’s musical heritage and it’s a great Labor Day Weekend tradition,” said Michelle T. Boone, Commissioner of DCASE. “But over time, traditions can use a jolt of new and fresh ideas. Millennium Park and the Pritzker Pavilion’s state-of-the-art sound system provide an idyllic setting to enjoy this festival and experience the intricacies of jazz music.” The first evening of the Chicago Jazz Festival, Thursday, August 29, will once again coincide with the final evening of Made in Chicago: World Class Jazz. Then on Friday, three stages will come alive with entertainment in Millennium Park (including the north and south ends of the Chase Promenade) as the festival begins that day at 2 p.m. and continues until 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday hours will also be extended from previous years, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and an additional stage will feature live performances, resulting in the festival providing the most hours of free jazz music than it has in recent years. As is the tradition of the festival, the 2013 Artist in Residence is Chicago drummer/percussionist Hamid Drake. Drake moved to the Chicago area with his parents in the early sixties, living on the same street as Fred Anderson who would mentor the pre-teen drummer. By the early seventies, Drake joined Anderson’s band, playing with him on stage at the inaugural Chicago Jazz Festival in 1979. The worldwide demand for his talents regularly takes Drake away from home. His Artist Residency affords Chicagoans the rare opportunity to hear him in several contexts over the course of one weekend, and his appearance at the Chicago Jazz Festival – 34 years after he first played this event – encompasses the festival’s entire history. The stage that promotes the future of the genre by highlighting local high school and college jazz bands and ensembles, The Chicago Community Trust Young Jazz Lions Stage, will find its new home on the Harris Theater Rooftop on Saturday and Sunday. Millennium Park and the Jay Pritzker Pavilion will also play host to the first night of the 30th Annual Chicago Blues Festival, Thursday, June 6, before the milestone event moves to Grant Park for three full days of music on five stages, June 7-9. For continuing updates on the 35th Annual Chicago Jazz Festival, visit www. chicagojazzfestival.us, and become a fan on the Chicago Jazz Festival Facebook page.

Mark Burnell

Keeping Old School Piano Bars Alive

feature interview written by mick archer I caught up with Mark Burnell last month, just as he was about to start an exciting new steady at THE TORTOISE CLUB,350 N.State. My association with Mark Burnell began via Anne Pringle/ Burnell, his lovely wife, who is a sometimes-member of my Irish band, THE CHICAGO ROVERS. He arrived in town in 1989, just as I was starting my dueling piano career, so it was on one of those raucous gigs that we first worked together. As I recall, it was a private affair at the casino in Hammond. Unlike many highly trained musicians (BFA,MFA/ Carnegie Mellon University), Mark was at ease in the chaotic free-forall that typifies a dueling piano gig. His huge repertoire and easy-going, humorous manner made him a good partner, and I was hoping we could get similar dueling gigs, but that never happened. We continued to run into each other hanging out at Buddy Charles gigs, and stayed in touch through the piano players grapevine. ”My repertoire of over 1000 songs draws almost exclusively from jazz, blues, Latin, and The Great American Songbook. I was most influenced by George Gershwin, Dave Brubeck, Bill Evans, Dave Frishberg, Chick Corea, Duke Ellington, Steely Dan, Fats Waller, George Shearing, Oscar Peterson, Stevie Wonder, Ravel and Debussy.” Asked what comprises a typical night, Mark says “Playing standards, taking requests, accompanying singers, playing solo, trio, or a duo act with wife Anne. Entertaining people, making them laugh or smile”. He is also very generous, sharing the spotlight with occasional fans who also like to get up and sing. This would drive a lot of us nuts, but to Mark “It’s all about entertaining people, making them happy.”

AVAILABLE NOW Buy This Issue/Subscribe

Mark is a show biz ‘lifer; “I’ve played piano and sung professionally for 41 years. Among my best playing nights were gigs with jazz legends Louie Bellson, Richie Cole, and performing at jazz clubs in Bern, Zurich, Paris, Amsterdam, and Frieburg. Also jamming 4-hands with Buddy Charles at The Coq d’Or at the Drake.”

Inside the january/february issue 10 QUESTIONS WITH CJO’S JEFF LINDBERG & TRAVIS ROSENTHAL ORBERT DAVIS TALKS ABOUT THE CHICAGO JAZZ PHILHARMONC 2013 SEASON JAZZ FESTIVALS TO KEEP IN MIND FOR 2013 MIKE JEFFERS’ WHAT’S HAPPENing AROUND TOWN KELLY SILL’S ZWEE DOT! WES MONTGOMERY IF YOU COULD SEE ME KNOW It appeared to many that Mark was the most logical successor at Coq d’Or when Buddy retired in 2002 . “I DID take over after he left the Drake. I had a 4 month contract, but management decided to go with less expensive musicians when it was over instead of extending my gig.” But, he philosophically reflects, “Though I was perfect for that room, I had to let it go. So what? I’ve had a great career & life.” Like all of us, he’s had some ridiculous moments onstage.. and off: Mark once played on a Chicago sidewalk in 90 degree heat in a gorilla costume. But that didn’t ruin his sunny attitude. As far as requests, ”I just play them. I almost always know them, and if I don’t, I try to play a close substitute, like a song by the same artist or composer. I’ll play any reasonable request. Entertainers are supposed to make customers happy. ”Most requested? Play something by Sinatra.” Mark was on the faculty for 10 years at his alma mater, Carnegie Mellon, and keeps up a busy teaching schedule at his Wicker Park studio, with many piano and voice students. Check out Mark’s fine playing at any of the following venues. “I’m currently playing four nights a week at the Tortoise Club, leading a jazz trio. I play once a month solo at the Signature Room at the 95th. I also play monthly at Chambers with Anne. I play gospel piano every Sunday morning at Gorham United Methodist Church (my 16th year). Recent CDs include Cooler by the Lake (with Richie Cole) West of State Street/ East of Harlem (with John Burnett Swing Orchestra & Randy Sandke) and Blues in the Night (with Anne Burnell)”. He’s the real deal when it comes to old-school piano bar entertainment.

We see a trend developing: the Chicago area has an ever-growing number of jazz festivals! The jazz fest plays an important role during this era of specialized media, in that it is perhaps the single best way to expose the general public to jazz music. That’s why we wanted to compile a list of a few local & regional festivals with in driving distance to Chicagoland so you can start marking your calendars and planning ahead. There are a few milestones on the festival list this year, of course the 35th annual Chicago Jazz Festival and the 46th annual Elmhurst College Jazz Festival are the oldest on the list, but the Englewood Jazz Festival is moving into its 14th year and the Frank Mantooth Jazz Festival at New Trier turns 30 this year! At a time when the economy is struggling, it is good to know that the determination to present jazz in a festival atmosphere is still alive and well. Photography by BRYAN THOMPSON

A LOOK AT chicagoland jazz festivals the 23rd annual tribute to bix festival The 23rd Annual Tribute to Bix Fest (Bix Biederbecke), March 8-11, at the Racine Marriott Hotel, is one of the oldest festivals dedicated to the legendary cornetist. This year’s featured bands include Andy Schumm’s Monkey Chasers with John Otto and Dave Bock, the Scrap Iron Jazzerinos with Andy Schumm, pianist Dave Boeddinghaus from New Orleans, European singing star, Vanessa Tabliabue Yorke, with her New York pianist, Dalton Ridenhour and many other groups. In addition to a weekend packed with performances, Bix Fest also offers a 12-hour “Bus Tour To Hell” of former jazz sites, cemeteries and other locations in the Chicagoland area, two days of new/used record, book, sheet music sales with 50 dealer tables, including the Jazz Record Mart, a late night jam session, rare early jazz films and fun lectures a 1920s dance survey with free lessons for and a magic show with the Grand Marshall of Magic, Marshall Philyaw. CD RELEASE PARTY

patricia barber

From her early days leading a jazz trio in small Chicago nightclubs, Patricia Barber has drawn extravagant accolades. The praise came at first from local writers, impressed by her unique arrangements and coolly composed piano improvisations. As she added vocals to her repertoire, the praise poured in from national reviewers intoxicated by her recordings. And when (after years of international touring) she began to focus on her own compositions, kudos arrived from new fans, besotted by her lapidary lyrics and her often indelible imagery. Born in the Chicago suburbs, Barber came by music naturally. Her father was Floyd “Shim” Barber, a saxophonist who had worked with Glenn Miller’s orchestra, and the instrument beguiled young Patricia: “When he played the saxophone around the house, I’d put my hand in the bell to feel the music.” She began playing classical piano at the age of 6, but by the time she had graduated high school – in South Sioux City, Iowa, where the family had moved in the mid-60s, following her father’s death – Barber had foresworn jazz entirely. “It was hanging over my head the whole time,” she recalled years later. “But I thought that becoming a jazz musician was such a stupid thing for a woman to do – for a smart woman to do – that I tried to resist it.” Barber enrolled at the University of Iowa with a double major in classical music and psychology, while continuing to indulge the voracious reading habit she had nurtured since childhood. But the jazz echoes she thought she’d banished only grew louder, and by graduation, she had decided to follow in her father’s path. She returned to Chicago, and in 1984 she landed the gig that put her (and the venue at which she performed) on the national jazz map: five nights a week at the intimate Gold Star Sardine Bar, which held 60 people at the most, but where the audience made up in sophistication what it lacked in size.

available Jan 22 on Concord Jazz

www.patriciabarber.com Soon her reputation spread beyond Chicago, spurred by enthusiastic response to performances at the Chicago Jazz Festival (1988) and the North Sea Jazz Festival in the Netherlands (1989), culminating in her major label debut (A Distortion Of Love) in 1992. Two years later, she released Café Blue, her debut for the small Premonition label; working with label head and producer Michael Friedman, Barber garnered rave reviews from around the nation, which would quickly become the normal response to each new release. At about the same time, Barber began a steady engagement at Chicago’s legendary Green Mill (which was owned in the 1920s by a lieutenant of Al Capone’s, and is today considered the city’s leading jazz room); when not on tour, she continues to perform there every Monday night. And, ever the student, Barber returned to academia in the mid-90s to earn her master’s degree in jazz pedagogy from Northwestern University. (She regularly gives master classes in this country and overseas.) Barber’s first two albums for Premonition made her an international star: despite the label’s tiny size, Barber sold more than 120,000 of the album Modern Cool and even more of the follow-up Nightclub, attracting the attention of Blue Note Records. In 1999 Blue Note started distributing her discs as part of a unique partnership – the first joint imprint in the fabled label’s then-six-decade history. In 2002, Barber moved into an exclusive contract with Blue Note, recording three albums, including Mythologies, a genre-crashing song cycle based on the writings of the ancient Roman poet Ovid; the project was supported by a Guggenheim Fellowship in composition (the first ever awarded to a non-classical “songwriter”). By then, Barber had secured her place in modern jazz history. Among her contemporaries, only Cassandra Wilson had managed to create a comparable chemistry of new and old standards (catalyzed by uncategorizable originals); and only Diana Krall would match the compound appeal of Barber’s rarefied vocals and pristine piano. In recent years, she has released two volumes of music recorded at the Green Mill, available on her own label. Now with Smash, her January 22, 2013 debut on Concord Jazz, Barber proves that her poetry continues to search ever deeper, even as her music grows all the more magical. Photography by Jimmy Katz

FitzGerald’s has been a gathering spot since it was built in the early 1900’s. Up to 1925, the frame building at 6615 W. Roosevelt was a roadhouse used as a hunting lodge and sporting team headquarters. As more buildings rose along Roosevelt Road, the club was home to several nightclubs, the best-known being The Hunt Club, which flourished through the 1950’s and early 60’s--acts included Turk Murphy, Bob Scobey and Lill Armstrong. After the Hunt Club closed, the space became the Deer Lodge, complete with pool tables and a fortune teller.

“Frank D’Rone is one of the few finer singers and

Frank was headlining the world famous “Copacabana” when Tony Bennett took over the microphone on opening night and told the audience, “A few years back, Nat “King” Cole said that Frank D’Rone was the finest singer around. LINDY ENDRES

Hw

For Lindy

CMF

Endres, music played a bit of a different

role in the beginning. Finding the perfect song to choreograph and dance to was key, as Lindy dreamt of becoming a professional dancer one day. Her childhood was filled with an array of dance styles, recitals and show choir competitions, always being labeled the ‘dancer’, never the ‘singer’. Upon graduation from Sauk Prairie High School, Sauk City, WI, Lindy attended UW Stevens Point to receive her BA in dance. With her goal in sight, Lindy dove into the world of college dance, only to become sidetracked by the musical productions UWSP had to offer. These shows ignited Lindy’s flame for singing, a talent which she thought she would never desire. Being cast in multiple musicals paired with private voice lessons created a newfound goal; to become a professional singer.
