Guitarist/Composer Ken Hatfield celebrates the genius of Harlem Renaissance Poet Langston Hughes with For Langston, An enthralling song cycle drawn from his Blues-steeped verse. Featuring an all-star sextet with Hilary Gardner, Jamie Baum and Hans Glawischnig. To Be Released February 1, 2013, Langston’s Birthday. A supremely lyrical guitarist and award-winning composer with a deep love of literature, Ken Hatfield is always on the lookout for texts ripe for musical interpretation. He found an ideal muse in the great American poet Langston Hughes, whose rhythmically agile verse, marked by penetrating observations about love, life and politics, takes flight on For Langston, due out on Arthur Circle Music on February 1, 2013, Langston’s birthday. A chamber jazz work featuring a stellar cast of improvisers and the startlingly beautiful voice of Hilary Gardner, the album is a remarkable, deeply soulful achievement by a veteran jazz master whose name should be far better known. For Langston encompasses many facets of Hatfield’s far-flung musical resume, though he initially connected with Hughes’ verse on a visceral level. He was particularly drawn to the way the poet’s phrasing and unsentimental sensibility can evoke the blues, both as a musical form and as an essential expression of African-American culture. Rather than trying to encompass the poet’s entire oeuvre, he carefully selected works that spoke to him musically. “As I’m reading them I’m hearing grooves and melodies and even chord changes,” Hatfield says. Structured as a song cycle complete with a stirring overture, the album flows together gracefully, despite drawing on numerous rhythms and forms. Hatfield’s musical concept keyed on assembling a consistent ensemble for the entire project, one capable of improvising with gusto while exploring delicately hued passages in support of Hughes’ verse and Hatfield’s gorgeously calibrated nylon-string guitar work. “I needed to have the same musicians on each track,” Hatfield explains. “I wanted it to feel like an evening of music. And I wanted the guitar to be what George Van Eps called a lap piano.” Navigating Hatfield’s music isn’t for the faint of heart. He called on his frequent collaborator Jamie Baum, a brilliant player whose husky alto flute often parallels Gardner’s soaring vocals. Percussionist Steve Kroon and drummer Jeff Hirshfield are both dynamically sensitive musicians who can swing with authority or play texturally as an arrangement requires. In many ways, the ensemble keys on the melodically inspired, rhythmically fluid bass of Hans Glawischnig, the Austrian-born master best known for his work with David Sanchez, Miguel Zenón and Bobby Watson. Hatfield has recorded extensively with Glawischnig, dating back to his acclaimed 1998 debut album Music For Guitar and Bass. “Something about the way he plays really works with the way I play,” Hatfield says. “It’s like Bill Evans playing solo and he’s the left hand and I’m the right hand. But everyone contributed an incredible amount to this music. I wrote a lot of the music with these players in mind. I could hear their sound and playing.”

guitarist john moulder Chicagoan John Moulder is a guitarist and composer whose music has evolved from an assimilation of various musical traditions. Moulder’s compositions and playing are featured on his CDs entitled Awakening, Through the Open Door, and Trinity and Bifrost, each named one of the ten best jazz CDs of 2006 and 2009, respectively, by the Chicago Tribune, and his most recent release, The Eleventh Hour: Live at the Green Mill. Moulder has been a member of the Paul Wertico’s bands for close to twenty years. Recordings with Wertico include Live in Warsaw, Don’t Be Scared Anymore, StereoNucleosis, Another Side, and Impressions of a City by Wertico’s Mid-East/Mid-West Alliance. Moulder is also a member of the Larry Gray Trio and is featured on his recordings on the Chicago Sessions label entitled 1,2,3 and Three Equals One. In addition, he has played on numerous recordings by other jazz artists and vocalists such as Jackie Allen and Terry Callier. Moulder has played nationally and internationally at numerous festivals, clubs and concert halls and has performed or recorded with artists such as Eddie Harris, Bob Mintzer, Paul McCandless, Lyle Mays, Paul Wertico, Gary Burton, Niels Orsted Pederson, Arild Anderson, Bendik Hofseth and Kurt Elling. Moulder received his master’s degree in music from Northwestern University. As an educator, he is currently a faculty member at Northwestern University, Benedictine University and the College of the Performing Arts at Roosevelt University. He has lectured, taught master classes and conducted clinics at universities, high schools, music institutes and other settings. Moulder is a priest of the Archdiocese of Chicago, where he serves at St. Gregory the Great Church, the Sheil Catholic Center at Northwestern University and is the Arts Chaplain of the Archdiocese. With his unique combination of talents and vocations, Moulder hopes to improve the connection between the arts and the Church, while building greater participation in both.

Written by Hrayr Attarian The title, the tracks within and even the bursts of color on the cover art of Rob Mazurek’s 2012 release, Stellar Pulsations, are reminiscent of John Coltrane’s Interstellar Space. The music, now and then, also pays homage to the classic album. On “Spiritual Mars,” for instance, drummer John Herndon channels hints of Rashid Ali with his far-reaching polyphonics. The overall recording, however, is earthier, warmer and more modally introspective than Coltrane’s, and its sound more anchored in melody and much less exploratory. Mazurek’s long cornet lines, for example, on “Spanish Venus” are subtle and nuanced, and his opening duet with Angelica Sanchez’s lilting piano is an ardent, passionate dance. Phoenix born and New York based Sanchez is an improviser and composer in her own right. She exhibits both a deep sympathy with Mazurek’s vision and a unique and versatile individuality. Her cool yet edgy tone tempers the primal rawness of “Primitive Jupiter,” while on “Twister Uranus” she unleashes a fury of circular notes that wind around Herndon’s angular and emphatic percussion. The tune also features Mazurek’s exhilarating, raggedy vibrato. Deep bluesy hues color Mazurek’s horn on the mystical “Magic Saturn,” while Matthew Lux’s luxurious bass guitar enhances its aura. Sanchez’s bright sparkling piano and Herndon brushes add a hypnotic quality to this piece, which, with its contemplative serenity and lush melodic lines, is simultaneously ethereal and sensual. Although the three men have been band mates for a while in the leader’s various ensembles, Sanchez is a relative newcomer to the group. This, nevertheless, does not affect the seamless camaraderie of the quartet. A cohesiveness that is apparent throughout from the crepuscular and mellifluous “Folk Song Neptune,” with its shimmering cornet/piano echoes over supportive rhythms, to the mellow but assertive Mazurek and Sanchez improvisations over urbane beats from Herndon and Lux on “Spiral Mercury.” This hearty, intellectually satisfying yet quite accessible record is a mature and distinctive work from a highly idiosyncratic artist. It is sure to enthrall his long-time fans and novices alike.

Written by Hrayr Attarian The exciting traditionalist septet, the Fat Babies, not only replays jazz of the1920s, but also reflects the exuberance that characterized the original style. Their debut release, Chicago Hot, consists of sixteen tunes from jazz’s transitional era from New Orleans to Chicago. These include songs by the Louis Armstrong/King Oliver combo, Bix Beiderbecke, Fats Waller, George Gershwin and Erskine Tate among others. Led by the bassist Beau Sample, the group has the collaborative approach of King Oliver recordings as they echo Oliver’s ingenuity on such classics as “Snake Rag.” Sample’s melodic approach to the slapping and picking the bass anchors the music not only in the rhythmic structure of each piece, but also in the rich heritage from which they stem. Banjoist Jake Sanders provides the cadence and harmonic framework and takes lilting and fragile solos on such ballads as “Dardanella” and “Please.” The latter is a hauntingly nostalgic version of the standard and features an achingly beautiful cornet and clarinet dance. Andy Schumm’s smooth and blues-drenched cornet hits all the high notes on Victoria Spivey’s “Black Snake Blues.” His warm tone is perfectly matched on the frontline with John Otto’s wailing clarinet. Otto’s bittersweet sound blows over the syncopated rhythms like a soothing zephyr on “Weary Blues,” while his deep, throaty saxophone plays with a slow simmering fervor on “Willow Tree.” This Fats Waller composition also showcases Paul Asaro’s rolling stride piano. Asaro’s boogiewoogie stylings mark “Liza (All the Clouds’ll Roll Away),” particularly on his stimulating duet with drummer Alex Hall. Dave Bock’s smooth trombone with slight vibrato is like fine aged whiskey. His virtuosity is showcased both while soloing on the romantic “Susie” and deftly tailgating on the infectious “Here Comes the Hot Tamale Man.” Adding extra padding to the bottom line, tubaist Mike Walbridge joins the ensemble for “Stomp Off, Let’s Go,” adding effervescent humor to fast piano lines and high cornet notes. The Fat Babies are true revivalists. They not only reproduce dry, note for note music from a bygone era, but also breath new life into forgotten masterworks making them accessible to a new generation of listeners.

Written by Dan Healy Beka Gochiashvili is a sixteen-year-old jazz pianist who is joining the growing cadre of astonishingly prodigious and mature jazz pianists, including Taylor Eigsti, Tigran Hamasyan, and Eldar. On his self-titled debut, which was produced by jazz drum legend Lenny White, Gochiashvili proves that ahis reputation as a jazz prodigy is well deserved. Throughout this enjoyable recording, Gochiashvili plays with a distinct crispness and melodic flexibility that is reminiscent of Chick Corea, an early influence on the young artist. This recording is also an joyful all-star affair, featuring such musicians as Stanley Clarke, John Patitucci, Lenny White and Wallace Roney. Gochiashvili demonstrates this flexibility with considerable aplomb on the opening “Un Gran Abrazo (dedicated to Chick Corea).” In particular, his ability to follow the natural logic of a melodic line regardless of harmonic or technical limitations places him as a remarkable Corea disciple. As if this was not enough, guitarist Tom Guarna and alto saxophonist Jaleel Shaw play remarkably hip solos on this stimulating track. Another highlight of the recording, “For Keith,” is an eponymous homage to another one of Gochiashvili’s seminal piano influences. The track features a beautiful flowing melody played by Gochiashivili and Guarna. The leader’s solo is brimming with exciting melodic ideas and Guarna’s follows with a wonderfully mysterious and ethereal guitar solo. Gochiashvili changes the mood entirely on “Come Everybody (Herio Bechebo),” an almost operatic jazz dirge, chockfull of musical pathos. On this track, he enlists the assistance of a string ensemble and the vocals of Natalia Kutateladze, creating a powerful musical statement. On “Coco,” Gochiashvili demonstrates his stylistic flexibility with a departure from his previous modernistic originals. This swinging original pares down the ensemble to piano, bass, and guitar. The leader, in particular, impresses with his hard-swinging lightning right-hand lines. “When Almonds Blossomed” is a lovely ballad that features Guarna and the vocals of Natalia Kutateladze. “Exit to the West” quickly picks up the pace, opening at a blistering pace with free interaction featuring Guarna, Shaw, and Gochiashvili on the Wurly. The controlled chaos then gives way to a scintillating up-tempo melody, followed by one of Guarna’s best guitar solos on the recording. Shaw follows with an alto solo ripe with melodic twists and turns which then leads to a flight of light-fingered virtuosity by Gochiashvili that puts a bow on this exciting recording debut by a promising young pianist.

Written by Dan Healy Frank Russell’s newest disc, Circle Without End, is a fun recording that is also an obvious love letter to Miles Davis’s 1980s innovative synthesis of jazz, R&B, funk, and pop. Not only does Russell use the talents of Davis compatriots Robert Irving III, Darryl Jones, and Frank Patterson, but also recruits trumpet sensation Wallace Roney, who was once crowned the official Miles Davis acolyte when young Roney became the only disciple to study with the Dark Prince. Aside from Russell’s affection for this period in Davis’s recorded history, he puts together a wonderful disc of contemporary jazz, with each track featuring a different collection of Chicago talent. Russell himself is a musical institution in Chicago, well known for his razor-sharp electric bass skills and for his series of recordings with the excellent guitarist, Henry Johnson. Throughout this intense disc, Russell moves talented musicians in and out of different tracks, producing an interesting array of pop, R&B, and funk-influenced jazz with a focus on the creative use of musical electronica. Russell is from the school of virtuosic electric bass players, inhabited by such figures as Jaco Pastorius, Victor Wooten, Stanley Clarke, and Marcus Miller. On this recording, Russell’s time is rock solid and he displays considerable musicality with his crisp articulation and tight groove. The album gets off to an intense start with “Code MD-2,” a funk vehicle with much solo space, ably utilized by both Russell and Roney. “Her Name is Roz” takes it down a notch with a groovy, contemporary R&B feel. This is a song written for Russell’s wife, which has an intentional Earth, Wind, and Fire/George Duke feel, as described in the liner notes. Although the ensemble is in excellent form, particularly the vocal ensemble work of Russell, Yvonne Gage, and Verne Allison, it is Russell who shines with his virtuosic soloing, making complete musical use of the full range of his bass. Another album highlight is “Quick Pix,” which also makes excellent use of the aforementioned vocalists, and features a bass melody with particular up-tempo funk flair. “Quick Pix” is dedicated to two Miles Davis bassists who are featured on this track, Darryl Jones and Frank Patterson. Individual solos by both Jones and Patterson are equally scintillating and one of the music high points of the recording. Russell simplifies the mood with “Desi in Sedona,” a slow, mellow contemporary jazz tune that is reminiscent of some of the work of George Duke and Grover Washington, Jr. One of the highlights of this track is Greg Spero’s colorful accompaniment, as well as Buddy Fambro’s melodic acoustic guitar solo. Russell pays homage to his experience working with the South African singing group, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, on the track “Ladysmith.” A groove-packed tune that has a decidedly African rhythmic tinge. “Would If I Could” puts the fun in funky with a tight groove that could easily back Stevie Wonder or Chaka Khan. Roney and Russell play a superb simultaneous version of the melody. The groove of this track benefits even more by the return of Darryl Jones to the bass chair. All in all, a wonderfully produced recording that is particular recommended to fans of contemporary jazz.

Written by Hrayr Attarian Trumpeter Marquis Hill’s second release as a leader, Sounds of the City, is a mosaic of musical ideas and tonal colors that together form a variegated portrait of his hometown. The theme that runs through this engrossing album is the African-American experience in Chicago. This is not only evident in the short, free verse poems that vocalist Milton Suggs delivers with restrained yet expressive descant, but also in the subtle hints of other genres that spice up Hill’s originals. “Inner City Blues,” for example, is replete with distinctive Chicago accents. From Charlie Kirchen’s heavy rolling bass to Christopher McBride’s gritty alto, like an amplified mouth harp, the tune has strong shades of electric blues. The soulful swagger of “Kiss and Tell” brings an early R&B feel with its funk infused, sinewy electric bass, and Joshua Mosier’s urbane Fender Rhodes flourishes. The title track is perhaps the most impressionistic of the record, as it emulates the beat of city streets. Starting with morning’s mechanized pace of Kirchen’s fast walking bass and Jeremy Cunningham’s marching drum beat, Hill’s trumpet and McBride’s alto express the bustle of the city in a call and answer duet. As “night” falls, Mosier’s relaxed piano lines weave a nocturnal melody that usher in the languid and mellow horns. Hill not only excels as an imaginative and elegiac composer, but also as an improviser. His wistful and clear flugelhorn takes an achingly beautiful solo on the sparse ballad “To Be Free” that matches well with Greg Ward’s yearning alto. On the boppish “Wrath of the Lark,” over McBride’s warm groove and vibraphonist Justefan’s angular resonance, Hill’s improvisation is darkly hued and heady, like aged brandy, flavorful without an aftertaste. Latin ambience permeates the passionate notes of Hill’s horn as Bobby Broom’s brilliantly articulate guitar adds a bluesy romanticism to the simmering “The Token.” On this sophomore effort Hill exhibits maturity and a savior faire that belies his youth. This restlessly innovative multifaceted work is an engaging homage to an ever evolving, kaleidoscopic metropolis.

Written by Hrayr Attarian The release of Afro Straight is a return-to-roots moment for saxophonist Ernest Dawkins. Not that he had wandered very far from them, as even his freest musical output remains grounded in the blues and maintains a strong sense of swing. This current record, though, is an honest-to-goodness hard-bop date with a loosely swinging cadence, edgy improvisations and a dash of Afro-Cuban percussion to spice up things. John Coltrane’s “Mr. PC” opens with Corey Wilkes’ clear, warm and elegant trumpet solo that builds intricately upon the melody. Dawkins’ own fluid, intelligent and engaging improvisation pushes the tune further out into freer domains without losing touch with its spirit. On Wayne Shorter’s “Juju,” Dawkins lets loose a storm of wailing, honking saxophone as he embarks on an exhilarating flight of spontaneous creativity that despite its angularity remains quite dulcet. Greg Penn’s energetic congas provide a subtext of Latin sensibilities over which Willerm Delisfort’s percussive, rolling piano lines cascade in an imaginative extemporization. Junius Paul’s rapid pizzicato adds to the restive beat of the piece while Isaiah Spencer demonstrates his trademark virtuosity on the drums extracting multicolored rhythmic structures out of his kit. Dawkins showcases a soulful, laid back groove on the Billie Holiday classic “God Bless The Child,” gliding over the gospel tinged Hammond B3 sounds. Organist Ben Paterson combines a sublime spirituality with a simmering earthiness in his expressive style on the keys. The old fashioned, gutbucket “Old Man Blues,” featuring Dawkins smooth alto and vocals, are the ultimate homage to Chicago and the raw, emotionality the city’s music represents. Surrounded by the vanguard of young talent, including conguero Greg Carmouche and percussionist extraordinaire Ruben Alvarez, Dawkins, once again, demonstrates his versatility an improvising musician. Regardless of the setting his idiosyncratic artistry shines through transforming any date to a stimulating and engrossing experience.

We see a trend developing: the Chicago area has an ever-growing number of jazz festivals! The jazz fest plays an important role during this era of specialized media, in that it is perhaps the single best way to expose the general public to jazz music. That’s why we wanted to compile a list of a few local & regional festivals with in driving distance to Chicagoland so you can start marking your calendars and planning ahead. There are a few milestones on the festival list this year, of course the 35th annual Chicago Jazz Festival and the 46th annual Elmhurst College Jazz Festival are the oldest on the list, but the Englewood Jazz Festival is moving into its 14th year and the Frank Mantooth Jazz Festival at New Trier turns 30 this year! FitzGerald’s has been a gathering spot since it was built in the early 1900’s. Up to 1925, the frame building at 6615 W. Roosevelt was a roadhouse used as a hunting lodge and sporting team headquarters. As more buildings rose along Roosevelt Road, the club was home to several nightclubs, the best-known being The Hunt Club, which flourished through the 1950’s and early 60’s--acts included Turk Murphy, Bob Scobey and Lill Armstrong. After the Hunt Club closed, the space became the Deer Lodge, complete with pool tables and a fortune teller.

Andrew Distel is a vocalist and trumpet player.
He was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio where he attended the prestigious College Conservatory of Music studying both trumpet and voice. He moved to Chicago to continue his education, receiving a graduate degree in jazz voice from Roosevelt University. He has played at such notable venues as: The Green Mill, The Pump Room, The Blue Wisp Jazz Club, Green Dolphin Street, and Pops For Champagne. His quartet plays regularly-every Friday and Saturday night at The Pump Room-featuring Pete Benson, Hyosub Kim, and George Fludas.

Ava Logan “Chicago Jazz Singer” and Chicago Jazz
Band leader is an award winning singer-actress from Washington, D.C., who now lives in the Chicago area. A graduate of Yale and the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Logan, a Jazz Vocalist is a veterinarian by day and a jazz singer at night is available for Corporate Events. The classically trained vocalist has performed jazz, pop, and rhythm and blues in the U.S. and abroad. She has portrayed two of her idols, Ella Fitzgerald and Nancy Wilson, at the Black Ensemble Theater. She has released “So Many Stars”, her first major CD! National airplay began in September, 2008. The CD has received rave reviews! It was produced by Henry Johnson, who played guitar for Joe Williams for many years.

Corky McClerkin, a Chicago native grew up

Encouraged by his favorite uncle and jazz musician Lewis Ogletree, he studied piano for seven years before attending Northern Illinois University with a major in music. Jim Sellers is a Chicago based jazz pianist, having
been lucky enough to have performed with some great musicians, including Wynton Marsalis, Frank Catalano, Spider Saloff, Luba Mason, Ava Logan, Art Davis, Bill Yancey and many others. Jim’s interest in jazz began in grade school when he discovered Daddio Daley’s radio program on what was then WXFM. With a lot of tenacity and a little help from his older brother, Jim learned how to play the blues and to read music – having no formal lessons until he was in college. Still, by the time he was studying music as an undergraduate, he was proficient enough to be selected to perform in a trio with guest-artist Wynton Marsalis. He went on to earn a Master of Music degree from DePaul University in Chicago.

Endres, music played a bit of a different
role in the beginning. Finding the perfect song to choreograph and dance to was key, as Lindy dreamt of becoming a professional dancer one day. Her childhood was filled with an array of dance styles, recitals and show choir competitions, always being labeled the ‘dancer’, never the ‘singer’. Upon graduation from Sauk Prairie High School, Sauk City, WI, Lindy attended UW Stevens Point to receive her BA in dance. With her goal in sight, Lindy dove into the world of college dance, only to become sidetracked by the musical productions UWSP had to offer. These shows ignited Lindy’s flame for singing, a talent which she thought she would never desire. Being cast in multiple musicals paired with private voice lessons created a newfound goal; to become a professional singer.

Cyrano’s Marc Pompe began performing around Rush
Street as a solo piano/vocal in the mid fiftys and was influenced by the music of Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Thelonious Monk. Vocal influences include Frank Sinatra, Joe Williams, Ella Fitzgerald, Carmen McCrae and Jon Hendricks. In 1965, Marc left Chicago to work out of New York and played at Jilly’s (NYC), Eddie’s Backstreet in St. Thomas, The Gaslight Club in Toronto and Mother’s Lounge in Pittsburgh. composer, arranger, and educator originally from Detroit and now residing in Chicago. Many of his compositions are featured on his cds, and have also been heard on promo spots, children’s CD’s and national television. Mark has been a full-time working musician for over 30 years. Mike Frost has been a featured performer with

After a successful career as a print model for Jewel Foods, Soft Sheen Hair Products, and several others, she returned to her first love of music, where she received her Associates Degree in Fine Arts from South Suburban College and her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Columbia College Chicago in Jazz Vocal Performance. Rhonda has worked with some of the finest musicians in Chicago such as Roger Harris, Chuck Webb, Curtis Robinson, (to name a few). Currently, Rhonda is the bandleader vocalist of her R&B, Jazz trio “Pieces.” She performs at weddings, corporate functions and various social events and describes her music as “Feel Good Music.”

Roger L. Harris is a pianist residing in Chicago,
IL. His musical talents were evident at an early age. His father, Leo Harris, is the cellist that founded the South Side Family Chamber Orchestra and encouraged Roger to embrace his gift. Roger is currently the Conductor Emeritus of that orchestra. After receiving his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from Roosevelt University in Chicago, Roger taught band, orchestra, choir, general music, and commercial music in various Illinois and Indiana school districts.
