The Chicago Jazz String Summit 2013 announced The Chicago Jazz String Summit 2013 premieres May 31st and June 1st at the University of Chicago Arts Incubator at Washington Park and the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts. The Summit will serve to foster community amongst improvising string players and to encourage and inspire a new generation of improvising string musicians. Over the course of two days, the Summit will highlight the achievements of string players nationally and internationally who are making bold statements in the world of jazz, improvised and contemporary music today; players who are developing new techniques and languages and who are pushing the boundaries of what is possible for stringed players who still remain marginalized in the field. Chicago has been key to the development of the some of the most recognized string players in jazz such as Stuff Smith, Eddie South and Johnny Frigo, all of whom have left numerous recordings that are testaments to their abilities and achievements. Until now, Chicago has yet to showcase this history in a visible and/or formal way. Northern illinois university summer jazz camp This exciting camp is for enthusiastic jazz musicians of all skill levels who want to focus on a creative approach to improvisation and ensemble playing. This camp is jam-packed with performing, learning, and listening, and is for musicians who want to improve their understanding and performance of the jazz tradition. Campers attend rehearsals, seminars, master classes, jam sessions, sectionals, and group classes, all taught by renowned NIU jazz faculty, alumni, and students. Concerts, optional private lessons, and recreational activities fill the evening hours. Campers participate in classes on jazz improvisation and jazz theory and attend instrument master classes that focus on specific techniques for performing jazz and related music. All-camp seminars include discussions on jazz styles and the business of music. Campers are welcome to prepare a piece for the auditions, and improvise blues or rhythm changes, but this is not necessary. Sight-reading is part of the audition. Audition and evaluation results will be used to assign campers to classes and ensembles. The NIU Summer Jazz Camp will be held July 14 - 19, 2013 for Grades 8 - 12, grade completion. Space is limited for certain instruments and early registration for this camp is recommended. Mosaic Records set to release Woody Shaw set Mosaic Records is set to release Woody Shaw: The Complete Muse Sessions in early June. Included in the new collection are the mid- to late-1970s recordings that established his musical identity, and saw him break through as an inspiring and influential musician and bandleader. Also included are the Muse sets from his return to the label from 1983 through 1987, where as a mature musician he displayed his range on the instrument and his appreciation for music of many jazz disciplines. The “Complete Muse� concept allows Mosaic Records also to present Woody’s very first set from 1965 when he was just 20 years old. Originally recorded for Blue Note but returned to Woody by Alfred Lion when the record company founder experienced remorse over selling his label, it became a Muse set years later. He was denied fame more than once. Woody hit his prime when fusion was the rage and there was no cohesive jazz scene to support his career and recognize his innovations. A freak subway accident led to the kidney failure that claimed his life in 1989, far too early for his genius to be sufficiently appreciated by the public. chicago’s own- Merit school of music- 2013 NAHYP finalist Chicago’s Merit School of Music is has been selected as a 2013 National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award (NAHYP) Finalist by the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities and its partner agencies, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the National Endowment for the Humanities. If Merit is chosen to receive an award, the school will receive national acclaim, a $10,000 grant, and an invitation to attend a White House awards ceremony in August hosted by First Lady Michelle Obama. Merit was named a Finalist for its accomplishments in youth after-school and out-of-school arts and humanities learning. The President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities reviewed a total of 376 nominations from 49 states. According to the President’s Committee, Merit’s selection as one of the 50 Finalists distinguishes it as “one of the top arts and humanities based programs in the country.” Merit School of Music, is a non-profit community music school providing high quality music education to more than 6,000 Chicago-area students, from newborns to age 18. Founded in 1979,

san jose jazz summer fest 2013 reveals eclectic line up Summer Fest is known for its variety, and for discovering talent that’s about to break onto the international stage. Witness 2011’s Trombone Shorty, who stunned all of us with his performance and has since shot to international fame. This year’s lineup will be no different. We’re presenting the best of straight ahead and vocal jazz, Latin, salsa, blues, zydeco and related genres performed by established stars, emerging talents and local gems. While the festival may be a full three months away, they’re already excited about the artists they’ll be bringing and the changes being put into place. A full announcement of the lineup will come on May 30, but here’s a taste of what’s in store August 9-11 that will make downtown San Jose the temporary center of the jazz universe. For the first time, San Jose Jazz will have a parade from Plaza de César Chavez Park to the Poor House Big Easy Stage on Saturday, August 10 at 1:30 pm, to kick off the first concert on that stage. The evening Club Crawl will also appear at select venues in downtown to extend exclusive nighttime music offerings on Friday, August 9 and Saturday, August 10; venues will include The Fairmont Hotel, Hilton, Hyatt, Hotel De Anza, Blackbird Tavern, and Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant.
The 2013 Summer Fest promises to be one of the best yet, featuring diverse artists; great food, wine and microbrews; and the festive setting of downtown San Jose with easy parking and great hotels. It’s the best “party” of the summer season! For this year’s event, the San Jose Rep Stage is better than ever, with upgrading the roster to include even more world-renowned jazz artists to perform in this intimate, climate-controlled space. Tickets to experience these major artists is a special wristband in addition to your basic festival admission – $10 per day, available online or at any festival gate. new release of the week Nonesuch Records releases saxophonist Joshua Redman’s Walking Shadows on May 7, 2013. The album, comprising 12 ballads, is Redman’s first recording to include an orchestral ensemble, which plays on many of the tracks. It was produced by Redman’s friend and frequent collaborator Brad Mehldau. The record’s core ensemble is a quartet featuring Mehldau, Larry Grenadier, and Brian Blade—all frequent collaborators of Redman’s over the years. Dan Coleman conducts on the orchestral tracks. Walking Shadows includes original tunes from both Redman and Mehldau along with works by a wide range of composers such as John Mayer and Pino Palladino; Kern and Hammerstein; and Lennon and McCartney. Orchestral arrangements are by Mehldau, Coleman, and composer Patrick Zimmerli. Redman first worked with Mehldau and Blade in Redman’s mid-1990s quartet and they have been friends and frequent collaborators ever since. Redman was a featured soloist on Mehldau’s Jon Brion–produced 2010 orchestral album, Highway Rider. Walking Shadows is the first of Redman’s records to be produced by Mehldau. Redman says: “I couldn’t be more delighted to have the opportunity to do a ballads record with strings, with Brad producing, and my other great friends and collaborators all involved. I’ve wanted to do this for a long time.” The New York Times said of the saxophonist, “Joshua Redman is one of the most visible jazz musicians of the last 15 years, which says something not just about his natural flow as an improviser and his command as a bandleader, but also about his willingness to use words ... to represent jazz to the outside world.”

ay Down My Heart, the third release from the prolific vibraphonist Joe Locke since his signing to Motéma Music in 2012, marks a complete and deliberate contrast from his two previous releases: the small-group outing Signing, his critically lauded 2012 label debut with The Joe Locke Geoffrey Keezer Group, and the large-scale Wish Upon A Star, which was recorded with Lincoln’s Symphony Orchestra and was released in January of this year. Whereas Signing had a contemporary, powerhouse feel, and Wish Upon A Star was painted across a large orchestral canvas, this new release is an album of blues and ballads which makes an emotional connection via its utter sincerity, and its ability to deliver lyrical melodies which can literally pluck the strings of one’s heart. In Locke’s words, “This music is meant to provide respite for folks who work hard every day and need an opportunity to slow down and be reacquainted with that certain “something” which eludes most of us in the midst of the whirlwind which is modern life. I can’t put a name to what that “something” is, but if this music hits its mark, perhaps you will know what to call it.” There is no highbrow concept here, just some songs pulled from a deep well, which will hopefully serve to feed the soul. Most of them (even the ballads) are imbued with the blues, in form or sentiment. I’m grateful to the composers represented here, whose songs have touched my heart, made me wanna dance, or simply put a smile on my face.” On Lay Down My Heart, the acclaimed vibraphonist has surrounded himself with a group of players that bring an incredible range of experience and talents to the mix. His longest-standing collaborator on Lay Down My Heart is bassist David Finck, who Locke has known since their days as fellow students in Rochester, New York. Even before he was out of college, Finck joined Woody Herman and his Thundering Herd. His discography lists more than 100 recordings including platinum and goldselling records with Rod Stewart, Natalie Cole, and Elton John. Also on board is pianist/ composer / Gugenheim Fellow and Motéma label-mate Ryan Cohan, who has collaborated with such musicians as Freddie Hubbard, Curtis Fuller, Paquito D’Rivera, Jon Faddis and Kurt Elling, and who has had an extensive collaboration with Ramsey Lewis. Rounding out the quartet is drummer Jaimeo (pronounced jah-mayo) Brown. Brown, whose own project, Transcendence, will be released on Motéma later this year, began working with vibes player Bobby Hutcherson at the age of 19. He has gone on to hold the drum chair in the

Charles Mingus Big Band, and also worked with Stevie Wonder, Carlos Santana, Wynton Marsalis and Pharoah Sanders. The album, the first in a series of Blues and Ballads albums envisioned by Locke, kicks off with the song that introduced R&B legend Bill Withers back in 1971, “Ain’t No Sunshine.” As Locke says, “I just love that tune. The statement is so direct. It’s imbued with feeling. ‘Ain’t No Sunshine’: that’s the blues.” The album continues with Locke’s composition “Broken Toy,” one of two originals, Sam Jones’ “Bittersweet”, “I Can’t Make You Love Me”, “The Meaning of the Blues”, Frank Foster’s “Simone”, “This New October”, “Makin’ Whoopee”, and closing out the album is the Johnny Hartman & John Coltrane classic, ”Dedicated to You.” For Locke, the music on Lay Down Your Heart represents as much a journey through his past as it marks another move toward the future. “Working on this recording brought me back to my earliest days of music-making in Rochester, NY at the F&S Lounge, Jenks n’ Jones, and The Peoples’ Club, where the music was part of the social fabric, and the audience and musicians were definitely involved in a two-way conversation. It taught me that jazz is, and should always be, People Music.” Indeed, on his three remarkable releases for Motéma over the past 13 months, Locke has provided abundant ‘People Music’ and proved that his abundant talents – whether he’s performing in an intimate, small group or with a symphony orchestra – always serve to facilitate a lively musical conversation. Together, Signing, Wish Upon A Star and Lay Down My Heart paint an increasingly full portrait of an artist in his prime, a portrait not yet complete and to be supplemented by future releases on the label, a visionary of who dazzles and delights in many colours, styles and themes and leaves us waiting in wonder to see what he will create next. www.joelocke.com

Chicago A jam session is a musical event, process, or activity where musicians play (i.e. “jam�) by improvising without extensive preparation or predefined arrangements. Jam sessions are often used by musicians to develop new material, find suitable arrangements, or simply as a social gathering and communal practice session. Jam sessions may be based upon existing songs or forms, may be loosely based on an agreed chord progression or chart suggested by one participant, or may be wholly improvisational. Jam sessions can range from very loose gatherings of amateurs to sophisticated improvised recording sessions intended to be edited and released to the public. We see a trend developing: the Chicago area has an ever-growing number of jazz festivals! The jazz fest plays an important role during this era of specialized media, in that it is perhaps the single best way to expose the general public to jazz music. That’s why we wanted to compile a list of a few local & regional festivals with in driving distance to Chicagoland so you can start marking your calendars and planning ahead. There are a few milestones on the festival list this year, of course the 35th annual Chicago Jazz Festival and the 46th annual Elmhurst College Jazz Festival are the oldest on the list, but the Englewood Jazz Festival is moving into its 14th year and the Frank Mantooth Jazz Festival at New Trier turns 30 this year! The Chicago Jazz Festival has long been celebrated as the first of the lakefront music festivals, and as it marks its 35th year, the event will move to Millennium Park from festival grounds in Grant Park, August 29-September 1. Performances will also happen in the Chicago Cultural Center. (78 E. Washington) The festival is presented by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events. (DCASE) and programmed in partnership with the Jazz Institute of Chicago. The first evening of the Chicago Jazz Festival, Thursday, August 29, will once again coincide with the final evening of Made in Chicago: World Class Jazz. Then on Friday, three stages will come alive with entertainment in Millennium Park (including the north and south ends of the Chase Promenade) as the festival begins that day at 2 p.m. and continues until 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday hours will also be extended from previous years, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and an additional stage will feature live performances, resulting in the festival providing the most hours of free jazz music than it has in recent years. As is the tradition of the festival, the 2013 Artist in Residence is Chicago drummer/percussionist Hamid Drake.

Drake moved to the Chicago area in the early sixties, living on the same street as Fred Anderson who would mentor the pre-teen drummer. By the early seventies, Drake joined Anderson’s band, playing with him on stage at the inaugural Chicago Jazz Festival in 1979. His Artist Residency affords Chicagoans the rare opportunity to hear him in several contexts over the course of one weekend, and his appearance at the Chicago Jazz Festival – 34 years after he first played this event – encompasses the festival’s entire history.

FitzGerald’s has been a gathering spot since it was built in the early 1900’s. Up to 1925, the frame building at 6615 W. Roosevelt was a roadhouse used as a hunting lodge and sporting team headquarters. As more buildings rose along Roosevelt Road, the club was home to several nightclubs, the best-known being The Hunt Club, which flourished through the 1950’s and early 60’s--acts included Turk Murphy, Bob Scobey and Lill Armstrong. After the Hunt Club closed, the space became the Deer Lodge, complete with pool tables and a fortune teller.

Acoustic Alchemy
has pushed the limits of the acoustic guitar’s potential by embracing a spectrum of musical styles ranging from straightahead jazz to folk to rock to world music and beyond. In the two and a half decades since their earliest recordings – despite a tragic setback in the late 1990s and the inherent challenges of the 21st century music industry – the group has assembled and sustained a vast and loyal following that stretches well beyond their U.K. origins. The Smooth Jazz Cruise welcomes George Benson and Boney James, two of the most influential contemporary jazz musicians of the decade, to The Chicago Theatre on Friday, June 21, in an encore of 2012’s sell out performance. At various points along the four-decade continuum of George Benson’s career, he has been heralded as a jazz guitarist of unparalleled chops, a vocalist with great emotional range and sophistication or a combination of both. “It’s a very simple equation,” the National Endowment of the Arts Jazz Master says of the longevity of his career and the ten Grammy Awards that have punctuated it along the way. “In the end, it’s about the songs and the stories. That’s what keeps the music fresh for me.” Boney James has four Gold albums, three Grammy nominations, a Soul Train Award and an NAACP Award nomination to his credit. Andrew Distel is a vocalist and trumpet player.
He was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio where he attended the prestigious College Conservatory of Music studying both trumpet and voice. He moved to Chicago to continue his education, receiving a graduate degree in jazz voice from Roosevelt University. He has played at such notable venues as: The Green Mill, The Pump Room, The Blue Wisp Jazz Club, Green Dolphin Street, and Pops For Champagne. His quartet plays regularly-every Friday and Saturday night at The Pump Room-featuring Pete Benson, Hyosub Kim, and George Fludas.

Ava Logan “Chicago Jazz Singer” and Chicago Jazz
Band leader is an award winning singer-actress from Washington, D.C., who now lives in the Chicago area. A graduate of Yale and the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Logan, a Jazz Vocalist is a veterinarian by day and a jazz singer at night is available for Corporate Events. The classically trained vocalist has performed jazz, pop, and rhythm and blues in the U.S. and abroad. She has portrayed two of her idols, Ella Fitzgerald and Nancy Wilson, at the Black Ensemble Theater. She has released “So Many Stars”, her first major CD! National airplay began in September, 2008. The CD has received rave reviews! It was produced by Henry Johnson, who played guitar for Joe Williams for many years.

Bob Bruce began playing guitar at age 13 and at 15,
after hearing an album by jazz organist, Jimmy Smith, he was hooked on jazz. Subsequently, he marveled at the likes of Wes Montgomery, Barney Kessel, Joe Pass, and other greats. Eventually, he studied rigorously with Charlie Banacos, Jack Grassel, and Jack Ceccini, with whom he studied classical guitar for eight years. Ultimately he qualified for master classes with worldrenowned classical guitarist Oscar Ghiglia, Segovia’s protege. Presently, Bob plays private and corporate events. Corky McClerkin, a Chicago native grew up

Frank Portolese has been active as a guitarist and
educator in the Chicago area for 30 years. He has performed with Eddie Harris, Les McCann, Bobby Shew, Ira Sullivan, Shelley Mann and others. His pop credits range from the Drifters to Clay Aiken. He has been featured in Just Jazz Guitar, Jazz Times, Guitar Player, Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times and other publications. Frank plays straight-ahead bebop and hard bop jazz. Jim Sellers is a Chicago based jazz pianist, having
been lucky enough to have performed with some great musicians, including Wynton Marsalis, Frank Catalano, Spider Saloff, Luba Mason, Ava Logan, Art Davis, Bill Yancey and many others. Jim’s interest in jazz began in grade school when he discovered Daddio Daley’s radio program on what was then WXFM. With a lot of tenacity and a little help from his older brother, Jim learned how to play the blues and to read music – having no formal lessons until he was in college. Still, by the time he was studying music as an undergraduate, he was proficient enough to be selected to perform in a trio with guest-artist Wynton Marsalis. He went on to earn a Master of Music degree from DePaul University in Chicago.

Endres, music played a bit of a different
role in the beginning. Finding the perfect song to choreograph and dance to was key, as Lindy dreamt of becoming a professional dancer one day. Her childhood was filled with an array of dance styles, recitals and show choir competitions, always being labeled the ‘dancer’, never the ‘singer’. Upon graduation from Sauk Prairie High School, Sauk City, WI, Lindy attended UW Stevens Point to receive her BA in dance. With her goal in sight, Lindy dove into the world of college dance, only to become sidetracked by the musical productions UWSP had to offer. These shows ignited Lindy’s flame for singing, a talent which she thought she would never desire. Being cast in multiple musicals paired with private voice lessons created a newfound goal; to become a professional singer.

During the course of her musical career, Loretta became best known as “Lady Lee” for her impressionable, breath-taking performance and striking imitation of the Legendary singer, Billie Holiday. Additionally, she has performed in numerous capacities at jazz clubs and many other establishments throughout the Chicago-land area. She has also given remarkable performances as an R&B and Gospel soloist. In addition to singing, Loretta enjoys roller skating, stepping, and Latin dancing. With great passion and love, she continuously sings and performs from the bottom of her soul and is truly a phenomenal entertainer.

Marc Pompe began performing around Rush
Street as a solo piano/vocal in the mid fiftys and was influenced by the music of Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Thelonious Monk. Vocal influences include Frank Sinatra, Joe Williams, Ella Fitzgerald, Carmen McCrae and Jon Hendricks. In 1965, Marc left Chicago to work out of New York and played at Jilly’s (NYC), Eddie’s Backstreet in St. Thomas, The Gaslight Club in Toronto and Mother’s Lounge in Pittsburgh. After 40 years of performing, 1997 saw the release of Marc’s first CD, Nobody Else But Me, on Kopaesthetics Records. Since then, Marc has released 4 additional albums.

Roger L. Harris is a pianist residing in Chicago,
IL. His musical talents were evident at an early age. His father, Leo Harris, is the cellist that founded the South Side Family Chamber Orchestra and encouraged Roger to embrace his gift. Roger is currently the Conductor Emeritus of that orchestra. Chicago music scene since he moved here in 1967. His experience includes a broad range of musical styles, both jazz and commercial. Originally from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, he comes from a very musical family, both parents having been in the music business before he was born. His great uncle, Isham Jones, was a famous songwriter and band leader in the 20’s and 30’s. Steven Hashimoto has been a highly visible part of
Chicago’s jazz scene since 1976, when he founded the band Mothra (which is still in existence, with a CD on AsianImprov Records).
