r NEWS OF THE WEEK

Napa valley museum exhibits miles davis The “Miles Davis: The Art Of Cool” exhibition, presented by Napa Valley Museum in partnership with Napa Valley Performing Arts Center at Lincoln Theater, launches June 8 through July 28, it was announced today by Kristie Sheppard, the Museum’s Executive Director. The exhibition will feature 35 pieces of original artwork by Miles Davis, on display at both Napa Valley Museum and Lincoln Theater, in addition to personal effects, special events, programs and a film screening. Davis has long been noted for his restless artistic aesthetic, which played into his changing the course of music five times, his continued status as a fashion icon, and his globally recognized artworks, which most recently have been featured in Paris, Brazil and Montreal to outstanding acclaim. A quintessential Renaissance Man, Davis continues to break records as the U.S. Postal Service’s most successful and fastest-selling iconic stamp in recent years, with more than 23 million sold to date. His musical legacy is also firmly intact, with landmark album Kind of Blue still the best-selling jazz record of all time, in addition to being recognized with a Congressional Resolution in honor of its 50th Anniversary. The Miles Davis: The Art Of Cool exhibition will include a multitude of varied facets that represents the true genius of Miles.

The exhibition features Miles’ sketches and oil paintings and some personal items including one of his prized trumpets, a 1989 Grammy Award and a Miles Davis Yamaha Amplifier. A VIP & Members Only Reception kicks off Friday, June 7 from 5 - 8 p.m. Tickets are $20 per person and include hors d’oeuvres, wines from Kieran Robinson Wines and jazz by Graham Bruce. Bruce Hopewell, a jazz lover, producer, and good friend of Miles Davis, is working with the Museum and Theater to present a calendar of programs and performances during the exhibition: Saturday, June 22nd from 11am1pm - Children of all ages are invited to an instrument petting zoo, where children can learn about different instruments, listen to jazz, and create art based on the music they hear. Saturdays, June 15th and July 20th at 11am - Guided tour of the exhibition (included in admission). July 25-27 – Jazz Festival including a presentation by Bruce Hopewell, a film showing of “Round Midnight,” presented by Maxine Gordon, Dexter Gordon’s widow, and jazz concert at the Lincoln Theater. Napa Valley Performing Arts Center at Lincoln Theater, which operates under the aegis of the Lincoln Theater Foundation, a nonprofit public benefit 501(c)(3) corporation, is dedicated to creating a comprehensive, sustainable performing arts center where education and community are as important as entertainment, to supporting and showcasing local performing arts organizations, to developing the 3 next generation of artists and audiences, to helping

philanthropic of organizations raise awareness and funds for their causes, to offering the full gamut of first-class local, national and international entertainment, and to being an asset to the Veterans Home and the entire Napa Valley region. Miles Davis is one of the most innovative, influential and respected figures in the history of music. He is credited with changing the course of music five times and has been at the forefront of jazz for decades, setting trends and exploring musical styles from bebop through cool jazz, fusion and funk. His landmark album Kind Of Blue remains the most significant and greatest selling jazz album of all-time. Congress unanimously honored Kind Of Blue by the passing of H. Con. Res. 894, reaffirming the work as a national treasure. The exhibition was inspired by Miles Davis: The Collected Artwork a new book by Scott Gutterman with Miles Davis, Foreword by Quincy Jones, Afterword by Cheryl Davis and Reflections by Vince Wilburn Jr. and Erin Davis. Scheduled for release on October 10, 2013, the book is a comprehensive collection of the musician’s artwork. This long-overdue celebration of Davis’ visual art is a treasure for art lovers and music aficionados alike, who will appreciate this extraordinary window on the life of a creative genius. www.insighteditions.com For more information about the exhibition and events, please visit www.NapaValleyMuseum. org.

Jazz Note High School holds annual Masterclass Jazz House Kids’ annual Inside the Jazz Note High School Masterclass is an incredible afternoon jazz extravaganza whose past participants include Pat Metheny, Chris Botti, Esperanza Spalding, Chick Corea, Dianne Reeves and Christian McBride. This year, the program is honored to feature two NEA Jazz Masters and luminaries, saxophonist extraordinaire Jimmy Heath, and legendary pianist Cedar Walton. With such a historical group of musicians their hope is that jazz students will attend this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity! The day features two exciting masterclasses for high school students from across the state. The first session is led by dynamic Jazz House Kids teaching artists, where they examine the music of Jimmy Heath and Cedar Walton and their many collaborations. This session will focus on a few landmark recordings and discuss how a young musician can approach learning from these world-class musicians. Following a short break, we will invite our special guests to the stage to lead their masterclass. The second session will include a performance, an interactive discussion with the participants, demonstrations, and a Q & A session and a brief photo op with the artists. In past years, the discussions have been very engaging and students have left feeling inspired and energized! 16-year-old pianist, Michele Arenas, told The New York Times that the opportunity to participate “made you want to work harder.” For more information and Online Registration visit www.jazzhousekids.org.

NEW RELEASE of the week CHARLES LLOYD QUARTETS ECM RECORDS

This 5-CD box set in ECM’s Old & New Masters series, issued in time for Charles Lloyd’s 75th birthday in March 2013, looks back at the beginning of the great saxophonist’s association with ECM. It includes the albums “Fish Out Of Water”, “Notes from Big Sur”, “The Call”, “All My Relations” and “Canto”. All five albums were recorded in Oslo (between 1989 and 1996) with Manfred Eicher producing and they chart a particularly rich and creative period in Lloyd’s musical life. “Fish Out Of Water” marked Lloyd’s comeback, after long years in retreat from the jazz scene. He was partnered by Scandinavian players who had been inspired by his trailblazing music of the 1960s and who were able both to support and challenge him. A particularly strong bond was forged with pianist Bobo Stenson, heard on all of the discs here, who was to become one of the most important contributors to the inner architecture of Lloyd’s group music. As Charles said in 1995, “I don’t really assume authorship. I’m very proud of my orchestra, but it’s not about someone’s solo. It’s about those miraculous moments when the music opens up and you know you’re home.” The box includes liner notes by Thomas Conrad and session photography by Dorothy Darr.

new release sneakpeek Adam is simply one of the most innovative musicians alive. He is a perennial pollwinner in the Fusion category for Pulse! magazine’s year-end Top Ten listings. “Keyboard” magazine named him one of the top 10 players in the world, “Down Beat” lauded his “killer groove” and compared him to Jan Hammer - and even the “New York Times” and the “Washington Post” have praised Adam’s live shows. “What does it sound like? Ambient soundscapes and analog bleeps and bloops, with influences from Stockhausen to Tangerine Dream. Pretty out there!” For those that dare, Parallel Universe will be available April 30 on Composers Concordance Recordings/Naxos. www.adamholzman.com

Jazz Jam Sessions

Chicago A jam session is a musical event, process, or activity where musicians play (i.e. “jam) by improvising without extensive preparation or predefined arrangements. Jam sessions are often used by musicians to develop new material, find suitable arrangements, or simply as a social gathering and communal practice session. Jam sessions may be based upon existing songs or forms, may be loosely based on an agreed chord progression or chart suggested by one participant, or may be wholly improvisational. Jam sessions can range from very loose gatherings of amateurs to sophisticated improvised recording sessions intended to be edited and released to the public. Here are a selection of a weekly Jazz Jam Sessions in Chicago and in the area to check out.

We see a trend developing: the Chicago area has an ever-growing number of jazz festivals! The jazz fest plays an important role during this era of specialized media, in that it is perhaps the single best way to expose the general public to jazz music. That’s why we wanted to compile a list of a few local & regional festivals with in driving distance to Chicagoland so you can start marking your calendars and planning ahead. There are a few milestones on the festival list this year, of course the 35th annual Chicago Jazz Festival and the 46th annual Elmhurst College Jazz Festival are the oldest on the list, but the Englewood Jazz Festival is moving into its 14th year and the Frank Mantooth Jazz Festival at New Trier turns 30 this year! At a time when the economy is struggling, it is good to know that the determination to present jazz in a festival atmosphere is still alive and well. Photography by BRYAN THOMPSON

Freddy Cole is one of American popular music’s great performers. Like pop icon Tony Bennett, the 80-yearyoung Cole is a beloved musician’s musician and a living link to the Great American Songbook. While evoking the suave stylings of Earl “Fatha” Hines and Teddy Wilson, Cole is very much his own man, whose toe-tapping forays recall the bluesy minimalism of Count Basie, the urbane sophistication of George Shearing and the uptown swagger of Duke Ellington. “Freddy has an impeccable sense of swing… he is, overall, the most maturely expressive male jazz singer of his generation, if not the best alive.” —The New York Times

FitzGerald’s has been a gathering spot since it was built in the early 1900’s. Up to 1925, the frame building at 6615 W. Roosevelt was a roadhouse used as a hunting lodge and sporting team headquarters. As more buildings rose along Roosevelt Road, the club was home to several nightclubs, the best-known being The Hunt Club, which flourished through the 1950’s and early 60’s--acts included Turk Murphy, Bob Scobey and Lill Armstrong. After the Hunt Club closed, the space became the Deer Lodge, complete with pool tables and a fortune teller.

Acoustic Alchemy

has pushed the limits of the acoustic guitar’s potential by embracing a spectrum of musical styles ranging from straightahead jazz to folk to rock to world music and beyond. In the two and a half decades since their earliest recordings – despite a tragic setback in the late 1990s and the inherent challenges of the 21st century music industry – the group has assembled and sustained a vast and loyal following that stretches well beyond their U.K. origins. Through it all, the overriding mission of Acoustic Alchemy has been to reach the broadest possible audience by pushing the potential of instrumental music to embrace a broad spectrum of styles without being limited to any specific genre.

The Smooth Jazz Cruise welcomes George Benson and Boney James, two of the most influential contemporary jazz musicians of the decade, to The Chicago Theatre on Friday, June 21, in an encore of 2012’s sell out performance. At various points along the four-decade continuum of George Benson’s career, he has been heralded as a jazz guitarist of unparalleled chops, a vocalist with great emotional range and sophistication or a combination of both. “It’s a very simple equation,” the National Endowment of the Arts Jazz Master says of the longevity of his career and the ten Grammy Awards that have punctuated it along the way. “In the end, it’s about the songs and the stories. That’s what keeps the music fresh for me.” Boney James has four Gold albums, three Grammy nominations, a Soul Train Award and an NAACP Award nomination to his credit. He is currently touring to support his brand new hit cd The Beat. In 2010 Billboard Magazine named him “The No. 3 Top Contemporary Jazz Artist of the Decade.” Even so, James says, “I am just a saxophone player whose music has several different influences. Jazz is only one of them.”

Frank was headlining the world famous “Copacabana” when Tony Bennett took over the microphone on opening night and told the audience, “A few years back, Nat “King” Cole said that Frank D’Rone was the finest singer around. JIM SELLERS

Hw

CMF

Jim Sellers is a Chicago based jazz pianist, having

been lucky enough to have performed with some great musicians, including Wynton Marsalis, Frank Catalano, Spider Saloff, Luba Mason, Ava Logan, Art Davis, Bill Yancey and many others. Jim’s interest in jazz began in grade school when he discovered Daddio Daley’s radio program on what was then WXFM. With a lot of tenacity and a little help from his older brother, Jim learned how to play the blues and to read music – having no formal lessons until he was in college. Still, by the time he was studying music as an undergraduate, he was proficient enough to be selected to perform in a trio with guest-artist Wynton Marsalis. He went on to earn a Master of Music degree from DePaul University in Chicago.

LINDY ENDRES

Hw

For Lindy

CMF

Endres, music played a bit of a different

role in the beginning. Finding the perfect song to choreograph and dance to was key, as Lindy dreamt of becoming a professional dancer one day. Her childhood was filled with an array of dance styles, recitals and show choir competitions, always being labeled the ‘dancer’, never the ‘singer’. Upon graduation from Sauk Prairie High School, Sauk City, WI, Lindy attended UW Stevens Point to receive her BA in dance. With her goal in sight, Lindy dove into the world of college dance, only to become sidetracked by the musical productions UWSP had to offer. These shows ignited Lindy’s flame for singing, a talent which she thought she would never desire. Being cast in multiple musicals paired with private voice lessons created a newfound goal; to become a professional singer.

THE HARRIS GROUP

Hw

CMF

The Harris Group delivers an approach

to progressive jazz that focuses on more than improvisation. Influenced by Joe Beck and Steps Ahead, The Harris Group offers jazz that will no doubt stand the test of time. Although it is the basis of their repertoire, The Harris Group knows the audience for their music is broad, not defined by jazz alone. The Harris Group knows how to please an audience that is looking for meat and blood rather than fleeting hits.
