JACK MOUSE RECEIVES AQUARIAN AWARD OF ACHIEVEMENT Jazz drummer Jack Mouse is the recent recipient of an Aquarian Award of Achievement, presented by Aquarian DrumHeads in acknowledgement of his contributions as a jazz educator and performer. Currently Coordinator of Jazz Studies at North Central College, Jack has also served on the faculties of the American Conservatory of Music, Benedictine University, Saskatchewan School of the Arts, Clark Terry Great Plains Jazz Camp, National Stage Band Camps, Jamey Aebersold Combo-Improvisation Camps and Birch Creek Farm Academy for the Performing Arts. He has been a faculty artist member of the Janice Borla Vocal Jazz Camp since its founding in 1989. As a member of the Bunky Green Quartet, he was among the first musicians to introduce jazz education to the Montreux Jazz Festival. Jack has presented clinics and workshops at jazz festivals, music conventions, colleges and high schools throughout the United States, and is also presenting online clinics through the ALIVE Project (Accessible Live Internet Video Education). He is a staff artist/clinician for Yamaha Drums, Sabian Cymbals, Aquarian Drum Heads and Vic Firth Drum Sticks. Says Roy Burns, CEO of Aquarian: “Our company has only presented this award three times in our history. In addition to being a highly regarded educator, Jack’s new recording “Range of Motion” demonstrates his prowess as a marvelous player and a true artist.” Jack Mouse explains: “This award has a very special meaning for me. Roy Burns and I are from the same hometown. Roy was the first drummer I ever saw play live when I was four years old. In fact, Roy’s first snare drum was my very first snare drum. Over the years Roy has been an inspirational role model and a major influence in my life.” For more information about Jack, visit www.jackmouse.com

Fitzgerald’s night club hosts soup & bread gatherings Carrying on the tradition that started at Chicago’s Hideout Inn, FitzGerald’s is pleased to host this monthly soup dinner and hunger-relief fundraiser on the last Thursday of every month. Starting at 6 p.m. in the SideBar (come early, it goes quick) we will be serving a variety of soups created by local chefs and residents. And, of course, our bar will be open and ready to serve a nice cold (or hot) beverage to enjoy with your soup and bread. If you’d like to donate a little treat of your own (baked goods only, please) we welcome your participation! This month’s cooks are Capri Restaurant, LaRaie Zimm, Marion Digre (RE/MAX In the Village, Realtors), Jen Quinlan, Laura Rodriguez (Creme Crafted Parties & Catering). Proceeds go to OPRF Food Pantry. DJing is Ryan Anderson of Go Long Mule. Soup and bread began as a regular gathering of college friends, a time to come together over good food and good conversation. As they grew older and settled in Chicago, the group decided to use this model to try and help the many needy families throughout the city, and to invite new folks to carry on the tradition of sharing good food and stories with good friends. After raising over $10,000 for Chicago-area food banks and other charities in pay-what-you-can donations, branching out with a cookbook and hosting a cross-country tour, Soup & Bread is still headquartered at the Hideout Inn every Wednesday at 5:30pm. www.fitzgeraldsnightclub.com | www.soupandbread.net

Michael janisch IntroduceS new Children’s Music division Whirlwind Records and Michael Janisch have announced the first 5 releases of Jazz for Babies, an instinctive desire of Janisch to expose his baby daughter Eliza to high quality baby music from the earliest age. Recorded live in a London studio with further post production sound-work by Grammynominated engineer Tyler McDiarmid, the WWR in -house sound guy, a long time musical associate & friend of Janisch’s and a proud father of three. Jazz for Babies albums have an ingredient that no other baby music on the market has and that is ‘improvisation’. This is when a musician engages in spontaneous creativity, the jazz musician’s specialty. Recent studies have shown that improvisation in music triggers areas of the brain to do with individuality and creativity, so not only can JFB music help in calming and sending babies off to sleep, but their little minds are being gently stimulated by hearing truly creative music as well. The first five albums from the JFB series feature a themed lead instrument (Grand Piano, Trumpet, Vibraphone, Guitar, Saxophone) performing 15 classic songs adapted into Calm & Soothing Lullabies for both parent and baby to enjoy. Performed by world class jazz musicians on real instruments, each track also features a splash of melodic improvisation making our baby music completely unique. The albums will be released officially worldwide on June 10th, 2013 in CD shops, Online at over 50 digital retailers as well as in Mother and Baby Gift Stores, and are now available on the JFB site as advance copies: To listen to preview tracks of all the albums and to purchase visit the Jazz For Babies store.

Except...Sometimes

Available APRIL 9th on CONCORD RECORDS

molly ringwald

Photography by HUSSEIN KATZ

Except…Sometimes, the debut CD from actress and author Molly Ringwald, will be released by Concord Records on April 9th, 2013 (international release dates may vary). An homage to the Great American Songbook, Ringwald has crafted a carefully chosen selection of nine standards which she caps off with her take on The Breakfast Club classic, “Don’t You (Forget About Me).” The release of Except…Sometimes will be accompanied by select tour dates as well as appearances in conjunction with the release of her bestselling new novel, When It Happens to You. Except…Sometimes was produced by Peter Smith and features Clayton Cameron on drums, Allen Mezquida on alto saxophone, Peter Smith on piano and Trevor Ware on bass. Said Ringwald, “I grew up in a home filled with music and had an early appreciation of jazz since my dad was a jazz musician [pianist Bob Ringwald]. Beginning at around age three I started singing with his band and jazz music has continued to be one of my three passions along with acting and writing. I like to say jazz music is my musical equivalent of comfort food. It’s always where I go back to when I want to feel grounded.” An actress of both stage and screen, Molly was cast in Paul Mazursky’s film Tempest at the age of thirteen. Her performance as Miranda, the daughter of John Cassavetes and Gena Rowlands, earned her a Golden Globe nomination, and she went on to star in numerous films, including The Pick-Up Artist, For Keeps, Fresh Horses, Betsy’s Wedding, Cindy Sherman’s Office Killer, Billy Bob Thornton’s short film Some Folks Call It a Sling Blade, Jean-Luc Godard’s King Lear, and the now-iconic John Hughes’ movies Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, and Pretty in Pink. In 1992, a lifelong Francophile, Ms. Ringwald moved to Paris where she acted in such foreign films as Jean-Charles Tacchella’s Tous Les Jours Dimanche and Toni Marshal’s Enfants de Salaud, which she performed entirely in French. She frequently returned to the United States to star in television projects, including the critically acclaimed comedy series Townies, Stephen King’s The Stand, and the Emmy-nominated Allison Gertz Story. In 1997, Ms. Ringwald returned to the theater in New York City to star in Paula Vogel’s Pulitzer Prize winning How I Learned to Drive, a role she reprised at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles. Subsequent theater credits include playing the legendary “Sally Bowles” in the Broadway production of Cabaret; the Tony-nominated Broadway production of Enchanted April; and the London production of When Harry Met Sally. She created the role of Horton Foote’s Lily Dale in the NY off-Broadway production, performed the role of Salome (with Al Pacino) and starred in Jonathan Larson’s musical Tick Tick Boom! and the hit comedy Modern Orthodox, directed by James Lapine. Currently, Molly can be seen starring in the breakout hit The Secret Life of the American Teenager on ABC Family, and she is also on the road promoting her new novel, the national bestseller, “When It Happens to You.” www.mollyringwald.com | www.concordmusicgroup.com

Jazz Jam Sessions

Chicago A jam session is a musical event, process, or activity where musicians play (i.e. “jam) by improvising without extensive preparation or predefined arrangements. Jam sessions are often used by musicians to develop new material, find suitable arrangements, or simply as a social gathering and communal practice session. Jam sessions may be based upon existing songs or forms, may be loosely based on an agreed chord progression or chart suggested by one participant, or may be wholly improvisational. Jam sessions can range from very loose gatherings of amateurs to sophisticated improvised recording sessions intended to be edited and released to the public. Here are a selection of a weekly Jazz Jam Sessions in Chicago and in the area to check out.

We see a trend developing: the Chicago area has an ever-growing number of jazz festivals! The jazz fest plays an important role during this era of specialized media, in that it is perhaps the single best way to expose the general public to jazz music. That’s why we wanted to compile a list of a few local & regional festivals with in driving distance to Chicagoland so you can start marking your calendars and planning ahead. There are a few milestones on the festival list this year, of course the 35th annual Chicago Jazz Festival and the 46th annual Elmhurst College Jazz Festival are the oldest on the list, but the Englewood Jazz Festival is moving into its 14th year and the Frank Mantooth Jazz Festival at New Trier turns 30 this year! At a time when the economy is struggling, it is good to know that the determination to present jazz in a festival atmosphere is still alive and well. Photography by BRYAN THOMPSON

the story of

lepercolateur

As the railyard bled into dark warehouses, the stranger found himself alone. Street after street he walked with night taking control of his senses until his ears perked at the music of sirens. The dulcet tones of violin, bass, and the female voice spiraled through the darkness from the sole source of warmth in sight. Helplessly drawn in, he found the last lit trailer in camp that seemed to have sprung forth from another time, and there — in the form of three women — was both the past and the future in one. He introduced himself as Sam Random and explained that his path and his name were inextricably linked. Sensing a kindred spirit, they proffered their names: Marielle de Rocca–Serra held the violin, Stacy McMichael propped up the bass fiddle, and Candace Washburn’s voice had beckoned him in. As Sam sat at their fire and opened up his tattered guitar case, another man, his elder, stepped forth from the darkness having been drawn in from afar. Armed too with a guitar, he announced himself as Kevin Rush and sat with no concern as to whether he’d been invited – simply knowing he was home. Fueled by coffee black as the night they found themselves in and so dark it could have been wartime, they played through ‘til the sun began painting the eastern horizon red.

NEW RELEASE OUT NOW!

Winding their caravan through the windiest of cities, lePercolateur has spent the time since this fateful night sweeping in to transport concert–goers to a time where music was a liberating and cathartic respite from persecution — where the frenetic energy of struggling simply to be coalesced with the unbridled spirit of gypsy music and burgeoned into swing dancing. The troupe transforms Katerina’s into a sold–out Parisian dance hall circa 1937 on a monthly basis. Their high–energy sideshow has made Percolateers of attendees of the Jazz Institute of Chicago’s 2011 & 2012 Jazz Tour, the 2010 and 2011 Chicago Cultural Center’s “Music Without Borders” series, and Purdue University’s Swing Dance. They were Featured Artists in both 2009 and 2011 in the Windy City Lindy Exchange, through which they flaunted their uncanny ability to seamlessly fuse two different eras via their reinterpretations of modern pop through the medium of hipster gypsy jazz. Along the way, these temporally displaced merry-makers placed 3rd at the Chicago Bluegrass and Blues Festival’s “Last Banjo Standing” contest.

Week of March 26- April 1, 2013

FitzGerald’s has been a gathering spot since it was built in the early 1900’s. Up to 1925, the frame building at 6615 W. Roosevelt was a roadhouse used as a hunting lodge and sporting team headquarters. As more buildings rose along Roosevelt Road, the club was home to several nightclubs, the best-known being The Hunt Club, which flourished through the 1950’s and early 60’s--acts included Turk Murphy, Bob Scobey and Lill Armstrong. After the Hunt Club closed, the space became the Deer Lodge, complete with pool tables and a fortune teller.

Born in Ohio and raised in suburban Connecticut, Scofield took up the guitar at age 11, inspired by both rock and blues players. He attended Berklee College of Music in Boston. After a debut recording with Gerry Mulligan and Chet Baker, Scofield was a member of the Billy Cobham-George Duke band for two years. In 1977 he recorded with Charles Mingus, and joined the Gary Burton quartet. He began his international career as a bandleader and recording artist in 1978. From 1982-1985, Scofield toured and recorded with Miles Davis. His Davis stint placed him firmly in the foreground of jazz consciousness as a player and composer. Since that time he has prominently led his own groups in the international Jazz scene, recorded over 30 albums as a leader (many already classics) including collaborations with contemporary favorites like Pat Metheny, Charlie Haden, Eddie Harris, Medeski, Martin & Wood, Bill Frisell, Brad Mehldau, Mavis Staples, Government Mule, Jack DeJohnette, Joe Lovano and Phil Lesh. He’s played and recorded with Tony Williams, Jim Hall, Ron Carter, Herbie Hancock, Joe Henderson, Dave Holland, Terumasa Hino among many jazz legends. Throughout his career Scofield has punctuated his traditional jazz offerings with funk-oriented electric music. All along, the guitarist has kept an open musical mind.

FRANK D’RONE

Hw

CMF

“Frank D’Rone is one of the few finer singers and

performers around and creates great vibes with his audiences.” This quote, from Leonard Feather, one of the world’s foremost music critics, probably best describes Frank and his talents today. It takes a while to achieve words of this sort. Frank’s nique and rare gift has taken him before the spotlights of virtually every major nightclub in the United States. Frank was headlining the world famous “Copacabana” when Tony Bennett took over the microphone on opening night and told the audience, “A few years back, Nat “King” Cole said that Frank D’Rone was the finest singer around. Tonight he has proved that Nat was right!”

Still, by the time he was studying music as an undergraduate, he was proficient enough to be selected to perform in a trio with guest-artist Wynton Marsalis. LINDY ENDRES

Hw

For Lindy

CMF

Endres, music played a bit of a different

role in the beginning. Finding the perfect song to choreograph and dance to was key, as Lindy dreamt of becoming a professional dancer one day. Her childhood was filled with an array of dance styles, recitals and show choir competitions, always being labeled the ‘dancer’, never the ‘singer’. Upon graduation from Sauk Prairie High School, Sauk City, WI, Lindy attended UW Stevens Point to receive her BA in dance. With her goal in sight, Lindy dove into the world of college dance, only to become sidetracked by the musical productions UWSP had to offer. These shows ignited Lindy’s flame for singing, a talent which she thought she would never desire. Being cast in multiple musicals paired with private voice lessons created a newfound goal; to become a professional singer.
