At various screenings, Maxine will introduce the film and lead a discussion after the screening. Round Midnight (dir. Bertrand Tavernier, France/US, 1986) stars legendary jazz saxophonist Dexter Gordon as an expatriate jazz musician living in Paris in the 1950s. Director Bernard Tavernier creates a moving tale of an unlikely friendship and life in post-WWII Paris and New York, backed with a musical soundtrack featuring Herbie Hancock, who received an Oscar for the score. Dexter Gordon was nominated for an Academy Award as best leading actor for his portrayal of Dale Turner, whose life story was based on legendary jazz artists Lester Young and Bud Powell.

GERALD CLAYTON readies DEBUT ALBUM WITH CONCORD JAZZ Pianist Gerald Clayton will release his debut recording with Concord Jazz, Life Forum, on April 2, 2013 (international release dates may vary). This 12-song set combines Clayton’s highly skilled trio members, bassist Joe Sanders and drummer Justin Brown with saxophonists Logan Richardson and Dayna Stephens and trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire. Vocalists Gretchen Parlato and Sachal Vasandani and poet Carl Hancock Rux complete the ensemble. As Clayton states, “From everyone’s high level of musicality, open ears, creativity and love for one another has emerged a product that is so much more than the sum of its parts.” He adds, “This record is about gathering my favorite musicians and giving them the best platform to explore and openly express themselves. I take the same concepts and values that lead to creative expression as a credo to live by, hence Life Forum.” Clayton is an artist who does not work in a vacuum and is recognized by peers and public alike to hungrily seek opportunities which allow for creative musical exchanges with other artists. And he understands that any successful artistic venture requires listening as much as expressing, openmindedness as well as respect for the input of others. It requires leadership and, most importantly, demands a shared love for the art form and each other. Clayton understands that these are the conditions that create a forum for something truly magical to emerge. Visit www.geraldclayton.com for more information and dates where you can him and his band live.

new release sneakpeek NONESUCH RECORDS RELEASES SAXOPHONIST JOSHUA REDMAN’S “WALKING SHADOWS” ON MAY 7, 2013. The album, comprising 12 ballads, is Redman’s first recording to include an orchestral ensemble, which plays on many of the tracks. It was produced by Redman’s friend and frequent collaborator Brad Mehldau. The record’s core ensemble is a quartet featuring Mehldau, Larry Grenadier, and Brian Blade—all frequent collaborators of Redman’s over the years. Dan Coleman conducts on the orchestral tracks. Walking Shadows includes original tunes from both Redman and Mehldau along with works by a wide range of composers such as John Mayer and Pino Palladino, Kern and Hammerstein, and Lennon and McCartney. Orchestral arrangements are by Mehldau, Coleman, and composer Patrick Zimmerli. Walking Shadows is now available to pre-order in the Nonesuch Store with an instant download of the Redman-penned album track “Final Hour,” which you can preview at the site, and a download of the complete album available starting release day. Redman first worked with Mehldau and Blade in Redman’s mid-1990s quartet and they have been friends and frequent collaborators ever since. Redman was a featured soloist on Mehldau’s Jon Brion – produced 2010 orchestral album, Highway Rider. Walking Shadows is the first of Redman’s records to be produced by Mehldau. Redman says: “I couldn’t be more delighted to have the opportunity to do a ballads record with strings, with Brad producing, and my other great friends and collaborators all involved. I’ve wanted to do this for a long time.”

www.nonesuch.com www.joshuaredman.com

The New York Times said of the saxophonist, “Joshua Redman is one of the most visible jazz musicians of the last 15 years, which says something not just about his natural flow as an improviser and his command as a bandleader, but also about his willingness to use words ... to represent jazz to the outside world.”

JOE JACKSON THE DUKE

The Duke finds Joe Jackson interpreting 15 Ellington classics over the course of ten tracks, interspersing melodic and rhythmic elements of various compositions in a manner that’s consistent with Ellington’s own freewheeling approach. Rather than emulating the songs’ original big-band settings, Jackson filters the material through his own musical imagination while exploring an assortment of unexpected grooves and textures. The resulting album is a seamless fusion of sounds and styles, whose abundant sense of playfulness is consistent with Ellington’s boundary-breaking attitude. Jackson’s distinctive voice is featured on I’m Beginning To See The Light, Mood Indigo, and I Got It Bad (And That Ain’t Good), while It Don’t Mean A Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing) finds him trading vocals with punk icon Iggy Pop. R&B diva Sharon Jones, meanwhile, shines with a soulful I Ain’t Got Nothin’ But The Blues. In keeping with Ellington’s multiculturalism, Jackson also encouraged Iranian singer Sussan Deyhim to perform a soaring Caravan in Farsi, and Lilian Vieira, of the Brazilian/Dutch collective Zuco 103, to create a sunny, sexy Portuguese version of Perdido. The album’s striking mix of electronic and organic textures is especially evident on instrumentals like Isfahan featuring Steve Vai and Berlin electronic musician Kris Ingram Lanzaro, Rockin’ In Rhythm, The Mooche, and Black and Tan Fantasy. The musicians include two contemporary jazz stars, violinist Regina Carter and bassist Christian McBride; rock guitar hero Steve Vai; drummer Ahmir ‘Questlove’ Thompson and other members of The Roots; and two of Jackson’s old associates, guitarist Vinnie Zummo and percussionist Sue Hadjopoulos. Two album tracks (PERDIDO and IT DON’T MEAN A THING) were recorded in collaboration with Zuco 103 at their studio in Amsterdam. The remaining tracks were recorded, and the whole album mixed, in New York by legendary producer/engineer Elliot Scheiner. Though The Duke is a tribute album, it’s also very much a Joe Jackson album, consistent with his long-standing sense of musical adventure.

The Duke is a decidedly unconventional salute to Ellington, demonstrating the timeless brilliance of his classic compositions while showcasing Joe Jackson’s sublime skills as an arranger, instrumentalist and vocal interpreter. Although it’s only the second time he’s recorded an album not comprised of his own compositions, The Duke is nonetheless a deeply personal project for Jackson, whose longstanding affinity for Ellington’s pioneering spirit has served as a key inspiration throughout his own three-decades-plus career.

DREW DAVIDSEN TRUE DREW

A slick, cosmopolitan showcase of a dozen contemporary jazz instrumentals, cool-toned guitarist Drew Davidsen elevates his technical prowess and creative muse while contemplatively chronicling his journey through life on “True Drew,” his fifth album that will be released March 5th on Oznot Records. In addition to his impassioned, fanciful fretwork on electric, acoustic and nylon-stringed guitars, Davidsen wrote or co-wrote seven original tunes for the disc that he produced with Eric Copeland, Preston Glass and Norman Connors. Setting the stage at radio is “Hi5,” which adeptly bridges the sensibilities of a hip L.A. rooftop hang and sultry songo rhythms. The material that makes up “True Drew” mirrors the mission of the man. Beginning with the infectious “My Guitar” that is ignited by a spirit-raising guitar and celestial vocal hook, Davidsen ventures onto “95 South” in search of an energetic exploration, brazenly allowing the music – jazz, R&B, blues and adult pop - to be his guide. Riffing adventurously throughout, he gives a “Hi5” to his traveling companions on the album, an accomplished lot that boasts Bobby Lyle, Eric Marienthal, Bob Baldwin, Gerald Veasley, and the Temptations’ Ron Tyson. When life forces him to take risks (“Double or Nothin’”), he pauses for reflection (“All Night and Forever” and a brooding, New Age-y take on the classic hymnal “All Creatures”) before arriving at the “Sweet Spot” where he encounters love (“I’m Into You,” “I Can’t Help It” and “Give Me Your Heart”). “When one of my New York City fans dubbed me ‘Six String King’ it had a serious impact. I looked around and realized I really do see my life through my guitar. This album reflects that journey. Stringing together my passion for the guitar, excellence and innovation while combining ingredients and flavors from New York City, Los Angeles and Nashville, I was blessed to work with marvelously talented musicians, producers and engineers that helped bring ‘True Drew’ to life,” said Davidsen, who was named one of the 10 Hottest New Guitarists by Guitar Player magazine. Davidsen’s radio-friendly recordings have consistently generated abundant airplay and enjoyed lengthy stays in the Top 10 on the Billboard and SiriusXM charts, the latter on which he went #1 in 2011 for the “Spin Cycle” album. Born, raised and still residing in Towson, MD, he was a classically trained cellist who studied at Baltimore’s Peabody Institute. Since releasing his debut album, “The Journey,” in 2008, he has been warmly embraced by fans of his records and live shows. Davidsen won the Momentum Award in 2008 as Jazz Artist of the Year and has been nominated as Best New Artist by both the American Smooth Jazz Awards and the Oasis Smooth Jazz Awards. “True Drew” depicts a driven artist equipped with the skills, sound and songs to propel him closer to the guitar greats that influence him the most: Pat Metheny, George Benson, Earl Klugh, Larry Carlton and Robben Ford.

Rhythm, Rhyme & the Refrain...

The Open Door Theatre, Chicagoland’s Newest Stage for Jazz Talent

Written by Jim Page Question: If you want to go hear jazz, where do you go? Most people would answer, “a club,” and would add, “late.” And what would that mean, to “go hear jazz”? If you were consulting the New Yorker, and happened to be in New York, you would find a section in Nightlife called “Jazz and Standards.” That’s where the Open Door Theater’s brand new Jazz Concert Series, Rhythm, Rhyme & the Refrain comes in. It’s not in New York; it’s right here in Chicago—an interesting neighborhood in Oak Park, to be exact. It’s not in a club late at night, but in a small, extremely comfortable and well-designed new theatre space, located in Oak Park’s Art District at Ridgeland and Harrison. This new jazz concert series, sponsored in part by 90.9fm WDCB and Chicago Jazz Magazine, begins by featuring the varied and imaginative interpretations of standards, with each evening in the series devoted to a composer or lyricist, chosen by local jazz artists for that show. Curated by Linda Solotaire, the Spring season’s artists open the pages of the “Great American Songbook” to present the words and music of some of America’s most celebrated composers and lyricists. The first two concerts at the Open Door Theater featured Abigail Riccards, celebrating the work of Richard Rodgers with an interesting view of his very different collaborations with lyricists Hart & Hammerstein, and just this past Saturday, Elaine Dame’s presentation of the Billy Strayhorn / Duke Ellington 29 year long symbiotic collaboration. The remaining four concerts in the series focus on the works of Johnny Mercer, George Gershwin and Harold Arlen, with performances by vocalists Ms. Solotaire, Spider Saloff, Jeannie Tanner, Dee Alexander and their respective ensembles. Do you know the song “Moon River”? When you listen to the song, the words, the music, you will find what a rich, wistful thing it is. On Saturday, March 23, The Linda Solotaire Quartet embraces the dreamy world of one of America’s finest lyricists (who some refer to as Pop Poet Laureate,) Johnny Mercer. In her program called Dreams of You, the Sun, the Moon and Johnny Mercer, Ms. Solotaire, is joined by guitarist Stu Greenspan, Michael Levin on woodwinds, and John William Lauler on upright bass.

The assumption of jazz as a late-night club experience is balanced by the fact that concerts other than by huge-name artists have also been a part of the landscape, particularly as jazz has moved outward to interact with other forms, particularly contemporary. In this case, the series looks at the contributions of the writers of the music. The Open Door Theater provides an experience where everyone can see the performers, where you can order something in the lobby if you want to, and where you can gather with friendly and interesting people before, after, and during intermission.

L to R: Mary Pat Schieck, Lindar Solotarire, Barry Winograd

Beyond venue and setting, though, the series brings together Chicago based jazz artists performing music they love, whether their original works, or interpretations of creations by other artists they truly revere. The series creates a bridge to those artist for established jazz lovers and those newer to the genre. A full house this past Saturday makes clear a revival of interest in these melodies and lyrics, whose beauty all the performers in the series recognize. This revival of interest is evidenced by appearances of the songs in contemporary culture:, for example words from “It’s Only a Paper Moon” appear as the epigraph to Murakami’s 1Q84. The series continues Saturday, June 1 at 8pm with Spider Saloff’s The Memory of All That: A Gershwin Celebration, with pianist Jeremy Kahn. One of the rare officially sanctioned acts of the Gershwin Centennial, Saloff’s Gershwin Celebration has been touring since 1996, and headlined the St. Petersburg Gershwin Centennial Festival Celebration in Russia. The New York Times says she has “A wicked way with a lyric and a glint of well-controlled mischief.”

Jeannie Tanner Dee Alexander

The Open Door Theater is located at 902 South Ridgeland in Oak Park, IL 60304. You can reach the box office at 708.342.0810 and find them online at http://www.opendoorrep.org.

Spider Saloff

The Jazz Concert Series will return this November, exploring the intricate syncopations and rhythms that emerge in jazz from the African diaspora, and then next Spring a look at women written out of jazz history. Those line-ups are not firm yet - but based on what we’ve seen so far, they’re sure to be winners.

Linda Solotaire

Mary Pat Sieck, the Open Door’s Artistic Director, has more to say about all this: “While our Open Door Repertory Company has been a vibrant force in the community for over 10 years, our theatre space is brand new. The series is a natural fit for us, as we strive to recognize and respect local audiences and artists by offering a collaborative venue for individual growth.” She continues “We are committed to (among other things) innovation and experimentation in presenting a wide range of subjects and performance styles, and celebrating the diversity we serve. With the ongoing Jazz Concert Series, we hope to address all this and more; introducing new audiences to lesser known local artists (and an art form they may know little about,) and providing a platform from which those artists can express themselves in best light.”

Abigail Riccards

The Spring Season will close as Dee Alexander revisits The Rhythm & Rhyme Makers on Saturday, June 15 at 8pm. Bringing it all together, lauded Chicago jazz vocalist Dee Alexander is joined by vocalist Ben Farnandis, to share with us great duets from each of the Jazz Concert Series’ American composers and lyricists. What inspired the series? According to Ms. Solotaire, it is the sense that many people would enjoy various forms of jazz if they knew what to look for. “I believe that the challenges before us are there to be solved. As contemporary artists creating and working in this high-tech, economically depressed time when the arts and arts education are shoved to the back burner, WE need to create new opportunities for ourselves, and grow new audiences, if we are to survive.” In the concert series, Ms. Solotaire and the Open Door Theater have provided a context for the music, this Spring with their focus on composers and lyricists, as well as an extremely comfortable situation for viewing and listening.

Elaine Dame

On Saturday, June 8, audiences can enjoy an evening with acclaimed vocalist/composer and trumpeter Jeannie Tanner, with Lisa McQueen on piano, bassist Cory Biggerstaff, and Darren Scorza on drums. The evening’s theme is Visions from Over the Rainbow, in which Ms. Tanner reveals the works of the great Harold Arlen. Arlen, in case you didn’t know, along with lyricist E. Y., or Yip Harburg, wrote the song that gives the evening’s program its title.

We see a trend developing: the Chicago area has an ever-growing number of jazz festivals! The jazz fest plays an important role during this era of specialized media, in that it is perhaps the single best way to expose the general public to jazz music. That’s why we wanted to compile a list of a few local & regional festivals with in driving distance to Chicagoland so you can start marking your calendars and planning ahead. There are a few milestones on the festival list this year, of course the 35th annual Chicago Jazz Festival and the 46th annual Elmhurst College Jazz Festival are the oldest on the list, but the Englewood Jazz Festival is moving into its 14th year and the Frank Mantooth Jazz Festival at New Trier turns 30 this year! At a time when the economy is struggling, it is good to know that the determination to present jazz in a festival atmosphere is still alive and well. Photography by BRYAN THOMPSON

Week of March 12- March 18, 2013

FitzGerald’s has been a gathering spot since it was built in the early 1900’s. Up to 1925, the frame building at 6615 W. Roosevelt was a roadhouse used as a hunting lodge and sporting team headquarters. As more buildings rose along Roosevelt Road, the club was home to several nightclubs, the best-known being The Hunt Club, which flourished through the 1950’s and early 60’s--acts included Turk Murphy, Bob Scobey and Lill Armstrong. After the Hunt Club closed, the space became the Deer Lodge, complete with pool tables and a fortune teller.

FRANK D’RONE

CMF

“Frank D’Rone is one of the few finer singers and

performers around and creates great vibes with his audiences.” This quote, from Leonard Feather, one of the world’s foremost music critics, probably best describes Frank and his talents today. It takes a while to achieve words of this sort. Frank’s nique and rare gift has taken him before the spotlights of virtually every major nightclub in the United States. Frank was headlining the world famous “Copacabana” when Tony Bennett took over the microphone on opening night and told the audience, “A few years back, Nat “King” Cole said that Frank D’Rone was the finest singer around. Tonight he has proved that Nat was right!”

With a lot of tenacity and a little help from his older brother, Jim learned how to play the blues and to read music – having no formal lessons until he was in college. Still, by the time he was studying music as an undergraduate, he was proficient enough to be selected to perform in a trio with guest-artist Wynton Marsalis. He went on to earn a Master of Music degree from DePaul University in Chicago.

LINDY ENDRES

Hw

For Lindy

CMF

Endres, music played a bit of a different

role in the beginning. Finding the perfect song to choreograph and dance to was key, as Lindy dreamt of becoming a professional dancer one day. Her childhood was filled with an array of dance styles, recitals and show choir competitions, always being labeled the ‘dancer’, never the ‘singer’. Upon graduation from Sauk Prairie High School, Sauk City, WI, Lindy attended UW Stevens Point to receive her BA in dance. With her goal in sight, Lindy dove into the world of college dance, only to become sidetracked by the musical productions UWSP had to offer. These shows ignited Lindy’s flame for singing, a talent which she thought she would never desire. Being cast in multiple musicals paired with private voice lessons created a newfound goal; to become a professional singer.

Shawn Maxwell has the urge—a quality

fundamental to those who create improvised music on a nightly basis. In this way, it is not enough to simply create, but the need to innovate guides each note. His art lies in addressing the ordinary modalities of life in an extraordinary way, placing notes in their most complimentary places with precision and enthusiasm. Each harmony he creates is purposeful in form as well as function. After starting his professional career touring Internationally, across the Mediterranean and the Caribbean, Maxwell returned home to conquer the Windy City. With equal parts genius and toil, Maxwell has become one the preeminent performers in the Chicago jazz landscape. His multi-instrumental talents have been lauded by fellow musicians and critics alike.

THE HARRIS GROUP

The Harris Group delivers an approach

to progressive jazz that focuses on more than improvisation. Influenced by Joe Beck and Steps Ahead, The Harris Group offers jazz that will no doubt stand the test of time. The Harris Group knows how to please an audience that is looking for meat and blood rather than fleeting hits.
