CAPPUCCETTO ROSSO-Charles Perrault

Street harassment "it’s not okay"

Jess Leigh

Street harassment of women and girls is endemic. In this passionate talk, Jess Leigh argues it’s time to stop blaming girls and take a stand against unacceptable behaviour. Jess Leigh has worked on a number of campaigns to give girls an equal chance in life.

Catcalling, upskirting, unwanted touching: it's everywhere, there's no escape, and it's not okay. This disproportionately affects girls and women who are Black, Asian, or from another ethnic minority, as well as girls who are LGBTQ+, and disabled. The most vulnerable are the most affected. And it's not okay. We experience street harassment so often that we almost feel it's normal. We take precautions to reduce the risk of being harassed. You want us to be safe, but you talk to girls and boys differently about what 'being safe' actually means. You tell us girls to keep ourselves safe, but we don't want our freedom to be limited even further. We're told it's us who have to change our behaviour. Surely, what I wear is not the issue here; what they say or do to me is. We need to stop blaming girls for something that is not their fault. It is never just a comment; it's a comment which implies a depth of violence. It is a power move, and it's not okay. Women and girls across the globe are faced with this common issue. Walking down the streets of Lima or Delhi, the problems may look different, but deep down, it is the same. The same root cause is gender inequality and power. And it's not okay. It's important for us to know our rights, but there's confusion about the line between what's illegal and what's still not okay, when girls should report incidents to the police and

when they just have to accept it's all a part of growing up. The UN has been called for increased measures to protect women and girls from violence and harassment. Now we want to hear positive messages from you. We want you to listen to our voices and to act. We are sometimes blind to street harassment; we don't notice it, or we choose to ignore it. Let's make today the day we change that. If we really want change, we need to start demanding better. And importantly, we need to talk about it. Break down the stigma, break down the shame. Because when we speak up, we form a language that destigmatizes and empowers. We all need to be involved in this conversation, to create a new norm based on equality and respect. We need to teach children about consent, that our bodies are ours. No one has the right to touch them, to sexualize them, to judge them, or to abuse them. It's time to say it's not okay, to let girls know that our voices will be heard. It is time for us to start sticking together, working together, and standing up for one another. Every single one of us has the power to create a small ripple that leads to a tidal wave of change. The Me Too founder, Tarana Burke, said you have to use your privilege to serve other people. Now, at this moment, it's time to use your privilege and your voice to stand up for girls. Thank you
