THE PR ESIDEN T ’ S LET TER David F. Williams • President

A

s I write this letter in mid-April, something about the very welcome and much-anticipated transition from winter to spring brings to mind the words of the bards and the poets. After a long, wet, chilly and dark few months (the sky often “a hazy shade of winter” as Simon & Garfunkel sang on the great “Bookends” album), spring is most definitely springing here at the Club. I think T.S. Eliot had it mostly wrong when he wrote that “April is the cruellest month.” Sure, most of us (except for tax lawyers and CPAs) may think of April 15 as pretty cruel; but the rest of the month, as nature shakes off her drab winter overcoat and decorates herself with an explosion of daffodils, hyacinths, and tulips, and camellia and cherry blossoms? And, as well, when our Golf Course and Outdoor Tennis Courts open for the season, and we can take our ease with fine food and drink outside on the Dance Terrace? Pretty great. Chaucer famously captured the spirit of the season. I love how he greeted spring in the opening lines of The Canterbury Tales. Remember them from high school? Here they are (mostly), in the original and modern syntax: Whan that Aprill with his shoures soote When April with its sweet-smelling showers The droghte of March hath perced to the roote, Has pierced the drought of March to the root, And bathed every veyne in swich licour And bathed every vine in such liquid Of which vertu engendred is the flour; By which power the flower is created, Whan Zephirus eek with his swete breeth, When the West Wind also with its sweet breath, Inspired hath in every holt and heeth In every wood and field has breathed life into The tender croppes, and the yonge sonne The tender new leaves, and the young sun Hath in the Ram his half cours yronne, Has run half its course in Aries, And smale foweles maken melodye, And small birds make melody, Than longen folk to goon on pilgrimages. Then folk long to go on pilgrimages. 2 | CHE V YCH A SECLU B.ORG

In our case, however, our pilgrimage takes us not to Canterbury, but to the far more proximate delights found within Chevy’s 198 acres. I had the great pleasure of making one such pilgrimage out onto our Golf Course a few weeks ago. I was not out there to lament my latest errant tee shot or look for my lost ball, but to hunt for birdies of the feathered kind: I was part of a small tour of members led by Garden & Grounds Manager Michael Gildea and by Dan Rauch, a wildlife biologist with the D.C. Department of Energy & Environment. Some of you may have had the good fortune (as did I) to attend Dan’s fascinating talk at the Club in January about birds in the D.C. area (“A Bird’s Eye View of Avian Biodiversity in Washington, D.C.”), including a segment on our healthy and diverse bird population here at the Club. At both his winter lecture and on our two-hour walk of the course, Dan pointed out how important open spaces like our Golf Course are to the maintenance of healthy bird populations in our congested urbanized environments. And he was highly complimentary of all the efforts we make here at the Club (led by Mr. Gildea, Golf Course Manager Dean Graves and their superb teams) to attract birds and to give them a healthy and safe environment in which to thrive. Did you know, for example - I did not before the tour - that we have 20 bluebird houses, five purple martin houses, and a house for a bat (well, another winged creature but technically not a bird) on the course? Our fairway roughs, wooded areas, ponds, wetlands, streams and wildflower meadows are not just hazards for our non-scratch golf population; they serve as critical habitat for the 40 or so species of birds found at the Club (according to the May 2018 Spring Bird Count). Finally, Dan and Michael shared many ideas of what further steps we might take to make our property even more attractive to our airborne friends. The next time you are out on the course or walking on our beautiful Nature Trail, I am sure you will enjoy being alert to just how much birdlife is all around us. Having wandered into Chaucer earlier in this letter, it seems only appropriate to close with our own beloved Middle English verse, found much closer to home (inscribed in all caps on the mantle above the Tap Room fireplace): TELL ME WHAT MEN YE AR? HE SAYDE OR WHOS MEN THAT YE BE WHO GAVE YOUE LEAVE TO HUNTE IN THIS CHYVIAT CHAYS IN THE SPYT OF ME? We are lucky indeed to be given “leave to hunte” for so many pleasurable pastimes in our own Chyviat Chays. Happy spring! M AY · J U N E 201 9 | 3

FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER Luke O’Boyle, CCE • General Manager & Chief Operating Officer

As I write this column the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, the Outdoor Tennis Courts are opening, and in only a few days members will be back lap swimming in the Adult Pool. Before long, evenings will be filled with members relaxing in the Adirondack chairs enjoying beautiful Chevy Chase sunsets. This month we experience a sunset of sorts of our own, with the retirement of a key member of our senior management team, Golf Course Manager Dean Graves. Dean has served the Club for the past nineteen years rightfully earning a reputation for developing young professionals into leaders. Several of his Chevy Chase Club assistants now hold superintendent positions of their own. He is up each morning before the crack of dawn (4:30 a.m.), his staff often on the course not long after daybreak. His team works tirelessly in extreme weather conditions from heat to rain to snow (they play an active role in clearing the parking lots, hauling snow away from the rink, and caring for the new sidewalk along Wisconsin Avenue) and Dean takes great pride in being right there alongside them. He is paternalistic, serving as a father figure to a number of staff, and he makes a point to recognize each birthday and significant life event. They are his “work” family. When thanking him for his many contributions to the Club, I would be remiss if I did not also recognize his actual family. His wife Margie, is his partner in life, and her support I know makes those days when he arrives early and stays late easier to bear. His son Nick, a former golf course maintenance employee here is now a Golf Course Superintendent in Texas. His daughter Lauren, also a former Chevy Chase Club employee having worked in the Winter Center during her high school years, now lives in New York and is pursuing a PhD through Boston University.

Stephen Britton, CGCS has been selected as our new Director of Agronomy. Stephen is currently the Director of Golf Course Maintenance Operations at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm, a position he has held for the past 10 years. In this capacity, he has hosted five professional Tour events, including most recently the 2018 Quicken Loans Championship. Stephen’s experience includes providing a course in championship condition for millions to experience on television, providing high-quality course conditions on a daily basis for the enjoyment of his membership, numerous course construction projects and successfully mentoring eight assistant superintendents to become golf course superintendents. Stephen, originally from Australia, began his career at Royal Melbourne Golf Club, and has held positions at The All England Club, Robert Trent Jones Golf Club and Piedmont Club. Stephen enjoys playing golf and studying golf course architecture. He lives in North Potomac with his eight year old daughter Kate, and his wife Gina. Stephen will begin at the Club in late May. Please take the opportunity to welcome him when you see him out on the course. As this is my first article back after taking medical leave, I want to extend special thanks to the Board of Governors and Club membership for their expressions of support and concern during my leave. Your cards and emails were greatly appreciated. Special thanks to Eli Edgerly, who served in the role of Acting General Manager in my absence capably handling all of the Club’s affairs. There is much to enjoy and be thankful for at the Club this month.

Dean, thank you for all of your hard work and that of your team over the years. And thank you to your family for sharing you with us. Over the past four months, the club has conducted a comprehensive search for Dean’s successor. This process included candidates from six states, interviews with the General Manager, senior staff and Club members, presentations by three finalists, personality profiles, references and finally a background check. After all of that, we are pleased to announce that 4 | CHE V YCH A SECLU B.ORG

1947: Vintage Golf Shop Photograph June 6, 1944. D-Day. Seventy-five years ago. World War II. The Allies landed their forces on the beaches of Normandy and began the long fight to take back France from German occupation. The Supreme Commander of the Allied forces on D-Day was U.S. Army General Dwight D. Eisenhower. Two years later, in August 1946, Dwight D. Eisenhower was elected to membership at Chevy Chase Club. A vintage photograph taken at the Club and dated June 25, 1947, has been displayed in the Club’s Golf Shop for decades. The picture includes three U.S. Army Generals – all Club members, friends and avid golfers. The photograph includes Major General Floyd L. Parks, Franklin L. Fisher, Dwight D. Eisenhower (General of the Army and Chief of Staff) and Brigadier General Frank A. Allen, Jr. The photograph is signed by each golfer and courtesy of the National Geographic Society. Presumably, the four golfers were enjoying a round of golf together that day at the Club.

Author’s Note: Dwight D. Eisenhower became the 34th President of the United States in 1953. Floyd L. Parks won the Men’s Club Championship in golf in 1952, and his son William R. Wide World Dinner: Evan Thomas On Sandra Day O’Connor THURSDAY, MAY 30, 6:30 P.M. First: Sandra Day O’Connor, An Intimate Portrait of the First Woman Supreme Court Justice, chronicles Justice O’Connor’s groundbreaking life and career. Born in 1930 in El Paso and raised on an Arizona cattle ranch, she set her sights on Stanford University at age 16 and was accepted. When she graduated near the top of her law school class in 1952, no firm would hire her. In 1981, Sandra Day O’Connor became the first woman appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court, ahead of many other “firsts” for women in public life in the years to come. The inspiring and authoritative biography of Sandra Day O’Connor, America’s first female Supreme Court justice, draws on exclusive interviews and first-time access to Justice O’Connor’s archives - by the New York Times bestselling author Evan Thomas. Justice Sandra Day O’Connor personally selected Mr. Thomas to write her authorized biography in 2016. When President Ronald Reagan appointed her as the first female justice, she began a pioneering quarter-century on the bench, hearing cases that ultimately advanced and defined American law. Diagnosed with cancer at 58 and later caring for a husband with Alzheimer’s, O’Connor endured every difficulty with grit and poise. In First, Evan Thomas illustrates how Justice O’Connor also served as a beacon for how our public officials should serve their country. Her extraordinary life offers a road map for when to fight and when to concede, how to love and when to say goodbye. Evan Thomas is the author of ten books, including the New York Times bestselling John Paul Jones, Sea of Thunder, and Being Nixon. He was a writer, correspondent, and editor for thirty-three years at Time and Newsweek. Mr. Thomas holds a BA from Harvard, a JD from University of Virginia School of Law and has taught at Harvard and Princeton. Hugh Hewett in the Washington Post says “Come for the Supreme Court drama, revel in the wonderful portraits of all the justices with whom O’Connor served, but stay for the story of a life well and fully lived. Sandra Day O’Connor is a great American. So was John O’Connor. And Evan Thomas is a great biographer.” $55 per person includes wine with dinner. After the tour, curator, Jan Stuart, will explore the lives of the Qing dynasty empresses at Chevy Chase Club followed by a luncheon. It is a compelling tale of opulence and influence in this first-ever, in-depth exhibition of the subject. From their royal portraits and costumes they wore to Buddhist art displayed in the Forbidden City, Ms. Stuart will illustrate how the exhibition breaks stereotypes by showing how actively the empresses exerted influence in the arts, religion, politics, and diplomacy. Most of the artworks are from the Palace Museum in Beijing, and many have never been exhibited outside of China.

COOKOU T ON T HE BOW L I NG GR EE N 5 - 8 p.m. Continue enjoying the holiday weekend with a relaxing evening on the Bowling Green. End the day enjoying a summer buffet, cold refreshments and great entertainment. Children will enjoy lawn games and a bounce house! $35 per person, $16 per child ages 5 - 12. Among the exhibits that you will see and Ms. Stuart will speak about, are a larger than life-size portrait of the last Empress of China, painted by American artist Katherine Carl. Created for the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, Missouri, the picture was subsequently given to President Theodore Roosevelt by the Empress Dowager Cixi as a gift, and is part of the Smithsonian collection. The exhibition is organized by the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts; the Freer | Sackler; and the Palace Museum in Beijing, China.

Rule Of The Month

RULE 19.3 RELIEF OPTIONS FOR UNPLAYABLE BALL IN A BUNKER The player has three options under penalty of one penalty stroke: 1. Proceed under stroke and distance (replay the previous shot). 2. The player may take back-on-the-line relief. Keeping the point of entry into the bunker and the flagstick in a straight line and drop the ball within the bunker. 3. The player may take lateral relief in the bunker, within two club lengths from where the ball lies. The player has one option for two penalty strokes: The player may take back-on-the-line relief. Keeping the point of entry into the bunker and the flagstick in a straight line and drop the ball outside the bunker, as far back as they would like.

Club Fitting Nugget

Did you know one of the most underrated aspects of club fitting is the grip size? A golfer playing grips too small for his or her hands will tend to draw/hook the ball and a golfer playing grips too large will tend to fade/slice the ball. If you have a certain tendency with your ball flight, ask a professional to assess your grip size.

JUNIOR GOLF

Three-Day Golf Schools BEGINNING JUNE 11 The Junior 3-Day Golf Schools are fast approaching. These schools are the foundation of our Chevy Chase Club Junior Program and we encourage your children to take part. Juniors will learn the basic fundamentals, enjoy playing games designed to enhance golf skills and gain on-course experience. Each school will run three consecutive days from 9 a.m. - noon. The Golf Shop will provide time for snacks and drinks. $250 per junior. Schools are limited to 30 students. Ages 8+. All students must be 8 before the first day of that particular golf school. Register signing up at the Golf Shop or on ForeTees.

Interclub Team

The Junior Interclub Team is comprised of two divisions playing in 9 hole & 18 hole matches. The match format has three twoperson teams each playing two singles and a four ball match, totaling three points per match. Players are seeded #1 to #6 and play the corresponding seed of the opposing club respectively. One point is awarded to the winner of each individual match (Chevy #1 seed vs. opposing club #1 seed, etc.) and one point is awarded to the winner of the team better ball match (Chevy #1 and #2 vs. opposing club #1 and #2). There are nine points available per match and the team with the most points after the completion of competition wins. The interclub team is a great way to make new friends here at Chevy and at our neighboring clubs. Moreover, the Junior Interclub matches are a great introduction to competitive golf. If you are interested in having your junior golfer participate on the Junior Interclub team, please contact Pleasant Hughes in the golf shop for dates and scheduling. M A Y · J U N E 2 0 1 9 | 21

GOLF INSTRUCTION Pleasant Hughes, PGA • Teaching Professional

Use Wedge Bounce Correctly The bounce of a wedge plays a significant role in how the club interacts with the ground during a shot. Bounce is simply the angle between the ground and the sole (bottom) of a club. The back edge of the sole rests on the ground while the leading edge is elevated when addressing a golf ball. If the back edge of the club strikes the ground first during a shot it will glide along the ground. This adds forgiveness, allowing for solid contact even if you make a mistake. Striking the ground with the leading edge first leads to the club digging into the ground, producing large divots and chunked shots. A proper setup is important to using the bounce when pitching. Here are some key points to follow. 1) Your alignment should be a few degrees open (left of target for righties). 2) The ball is in the center or just forward of center in your stance. 3) The golf shaft should be vertical or lean slightly toward the target. Make several practice swings, trying to clip the ground with the back edge of the sole. If done correctly the club will slide across the top of the grass, taking little to no divot. If the leading edge strikes the ground first your club will dig into the ground.

GR EENS DEPARTMEN T

Dean Graves, GGCS • Golf Course Manager

It is so nice to have consistent warm weather to enjoy the golf course and all the beauty of our surroundings. The completion of all the winter and spring projects; additional fairway drainage, bunker work, aerification, and tree pruning have really improved the course conditions. All these improvements should help the course make it through the stresses of summer. We have two recent additions to the management team of the Greens Department: Austin Dance (L) and Kyle Walden (R).

Kyle was an intern during the 2018 season and Austin during both the 2016 and 2017 seasons. These gentlemen are filling assistant’s positions and both have received BS degrees from Purdue University. Please welcome them to Chevy when you see them on the course. The Club’s intern program allows students from respected agronomy programs to learn and experience our Club first hand. Kyle and Austin stood out among their peers and both have great potential in the golf course management profession. Chris Sandels, lead assistant, has taken the Superintendent’s position at Mount Vernon Country Club. Chris was with us for seven years starting as an intern and developing into an awesome assistant. He will undoubtedly take his experiences from Chevy to Mount Vernon and make that operation the best it can be. After twenty years with Chevy Chase Club, I have decided to retire from being your Golf Course Manager. The time with you has been the best of my 48-year career in the golf profession. The accomplishments we have made together, and the friendships will be my lasting memory of Chevy Chase Club.

Greens Aerification: Monday, June 24 As a reminder, our next scheduled greens aerification will begin on Monday, June 24, with the course being closed all day. The practice range and Golf Performance Center will open at 1:30 p.m.

Swim & Dive Lessons

Looking for private lessons? Whether it is for an adult, child or competitive athlete, the Chevy Chase Club has hired an excellent and knowledgeable coaching staff to teach you and your children how to swim. Having your child receive a lesson with one of our instructors will make an immediate impact on their water safety and swimming or diving ability. Lessons are 25 minutes and may be booked for longer depending on the needs of your swimmer or diver. Our staff has availability all week which can be viewed on our online booking system. The booking system can be found in the Swim section of the Club's website. Registration will open Monday, May 20 and continue throughout the summer. $30 - $40 per 25 minute lesson depending on the instructor. There is a 24-hour cancellation policy for lessons.

Masters Swimming MONDAY, WEDNESDAY & FRIDAY JUNE 3 - AUGUST 31, 6 - 7 A.M. The Chevy Chase Club Master’s swimming program will continue to be taught by our experienced instructors. The program will be offered Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 6 – 7 a.m. with a bonus workout plan provided on Saturday mornings. Each workout will be built to challenge and improve swimmers endurance and abilities. Our instructors are looking forward to working with you and helping you meet your personal goals. $400 for the season or $12 drop-in.

MEGHAN MEYER, Head Swim Coach

Meghan is returning for her 2nd year as our Head Swim Coach. She served as the assistant head swim coach at Chevy Chase for 7 years before leaving in 2012 and coaching at Kenwood Country Club during the summers before returning here last year. Currently she is the head varsity swim coach at Georgetown Visitation Preparatory School.

KIRBY CARTER, Assistant Swim Coach

Kirby will be returning for her 2nd year as an assistant swim coach. A long-time member of the swim team, Kirby not only brings her competitive and extensive swimming knowledge to the team, but also a wonderful attitude and heart.

ABBY DODGE, Assistant Swim Coach

Abby will be joining the coaching staff this year as an assistant swim coach after graduating from participating on our team herself last summer. She brings a wealth of Chevy swim team knowledge and we will count on her to carry on the Chevy Chase traditions and to elevate the entire team in their swimming and team spirit.

ANDREW MANN, Assistant Swim Coach

Andrew is coming to us as an assistant coach after recently graduating from Loyola University Maryland where he swam competitively all four years. Most recently he has been on the swim coaching team for St. Albans School and the National Cathedral School.

THE DIVE COACHES JULIAN ZIAGGI, Head Dive Coach

Julian comes to us from upstate New York as our Head Dive Coach this summer. Julian dove collegiately at Hamilton College where he also studied Biology and Government Studies. He is excited to share his love for diving with children of all ages.

RACHEL FERGUSON, Assistant Dive Coach

Rachel was on the dive team at Hamilton College in Arkansas, where she was also a multi-sport athlete and studied Sport Management. She will be filling the role of Assistant Dive Coach this summer. Rachel has a goal of coaching diving at the collegiate, or professional level some day. We are very pleased to have her at the Club this summer. M A Y · J U N E 2 0 1 9 | 31
