A BRIEF HISTORY

Chevy Chase Club was organized in the fall of 1892 with the original grounds comprising 40 acres of field and forest, including stables and a large old-fashioned house. Chevy Chase Club was founded by a growing need for a country club where hunting and riding could be pursued. The glamorous, but dangerous sport of the hunt was held at over 30 meeting points from the 1890s until the 1930s. Original plans for the Club included a three-quarter mile track, a cricket round, tennis courts and a football ground.

The expanded 190-acre site of the new Club took its name from a ballad detailing the Battle of Otterburn in 1388 between the Earl of Douglas’ 2,000 spearmen and Lord Percy’s 1,500 archers on Cheviot Chase.

With the introduction of golf in 1895, Chevy Chase Club became one of the earliest clubs to offer the sport. The National Women’s Amateur Championship was held at the Club in the fall of 1908, and the first Curtis Cup match in the United States was held at the Club in 1934.

Tennis was firmly implemented at the Club in 1905 when six superior courts were in service. Members of other clubs were first invited for tournament play in the spring of 1912. Famous names in the tennis world graced the expanded facilities (16 courts in 1916) which led to the hosting of Davis Cup matches in the 1920s and 1930s. Today, the club has 17 outdoor and four indoor tennis courts.
