hestnut Park is proud to present its winter issue of Invest In Style. As in all our publications the goal is to introduce you to creative artists, exotic locations and stunning properties. The stories in this issue are about the lives and work of people who inhabit worlds and live in places that most of us imagine but rarely experience. We are thrilled to feature Jenny Heijun Wills, the most recent winner of the Writers’ Trust Award for nonfiction. The Writers’ Trust, established in 1976 by a small group of Canadian writers including Margaret Atwood and Graeme Gibson, celebrates and financially assists Canadian writers in various stages of their careers. Jerry Heijun Wills was recognized for her memoir Older Sister. Not Necessarily Related (McClelland & Stewart). Wills was born in South Korea, adopted as an infant by Canadian parents and is an Associate Professor of English at the University of Winnipeg.

Art is always featured in Invest In Style. Hamilton-based artist Julia Hepburn’s surreal, fantastical dioramas will entertain, intrigue and challenge you. Beautiful properties from Aspen, Colorado to Porto Cervo, Italy, as well as numerous, stunning local locations are also featured throughout this publication. The Toronto residential and southern Ontario waterfront and recreational marketplace strengthened in 2019, and is expected to grow stronger in 2020. The Toronto and area resale market saw a year-over-year increase of 12% and an increase in the overall average sale price of more than 5%. The market was so robust that we entered 2020 with a shortage in supply which we hope will improve as sellers take advantage of increasing prices and make their properties available to the market.

Female empowerment is featured in our article introducing the iconic Yorkville (in Toronto) lingerie and swimwear boutique, Avec Plaisir. Owner Vasilia brings stylish and varied designs to local and international clients. Read her philosophy on what makes a woman feel and look beautiful. In this issue we visit the magical and enigmatic Lake on the Mountain in Prince Edward County; Aruba and its powder-fine white beaches and year-round good weather; the Scenic Caves Nature Adventure near Collingwood, a stunning winter experience; Muskoka’s Hidden Valley ski slopes; and a trip to the Napa Valley, the mecca for lovers of fine wine and gourmet food.

6

Recreational and waterfront markets in Muskoka, Collingwood, Prince Edward County, and Haliburton Highlands rebounded strongly in 2019, both in sales and average sale prices. Unlike urban markets in Southern Ontario, supply in recreational and waterfront properties actually increased in 2019, providing the consumer with more choice, albeit at higher prices. Once again, we are thrilled to bring you our latest issue of Invest In Style. We are so pleased to be able to make this issue available to our almost 100,000 readers. Enjoy!

Lawrence Park PHOTOGRAPHY BY TAYLOR NULLMEYER

Lawrence Park, one of Toronto’s first “garden suburbs,” is an exclusive, family-friendly, residential neighbourhood bordered by Yonge Street to the west and Bayview Avenue to the east, Lawrence Avenue to the north and the forested Blythwood Ravine Park to the south. Just 20 minutes north of downtown Toronto, and 10 minutes from the on-ramp to highway 401, with its access to Pearson Airport, cottage and ski country, Lawrence Park is repeatedly voted one of Canada’s top neighbourhoods.

The Lawrence Park Athletic Association offers programs for kids and teens, including baseball, soccer, hockey and basketball. Lawrence Park Tennis Club features three lit outdoor tennis courts. There are green parks and playgrounds throughout the neighbourhood. Lawrence Park residents live near some of Toronto’s best public and private schools. Private schools include the all-girls Havergal College and St. Clements, Crescent School for boys, and TFS Canada’s International School (co-ed). Highly regarded junior and senior public schools in the area include Blythwood, Glenview, and Lawrence Park Collegiate which offers a French immersion program.

Residents are a walk from stylish cafés and specialty shops.

Great schools are often high on the list for new residents of Lawrence Park.

World-class health facilities adjacent to the neighbourhood include Sunnybrook Hospital, Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital, and the Lyndhurst Centre. Public transit serves the area well with regular bus service along the neighbourhood’s borders of Yonge Street, Bayview Avenue and Lawrence Park, and through the heart of the neighbourhood on Mount Pleasant Road. All bus routes connect to the Lawrence subway station. Lawrence Park residents will be close to the new LRT line on Eglinton Road, scheduled for completion in 2021, providing more integrated access to the city’s services and amenities, including hospitals. At the northwest corner of Lawrence Park, the spectacular and multilevel Alexander Muir Gardens invites residents and visitors to walk among the meticulously landscaped grounds, year-round. These gardens, developed in the 1950s, lead to Sherwood Park, a protected home to what remains of the once-vast Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Forest, and Blythwood Ravine Park, one of the most beautiful forested walks in the city and part of the Northern Ravine and Gardens Discovery Walk. The well-maintained Blythwood Ravine marks the southernmost border of Lawrence Park.

Natalka Falcomer, Vice President, Corporate Development Chestnut Park Real Estate Limited, Brokerage. Natalka Falcomer is a lawyer who is deeply committed to increasing access to justice and positively changing the way the law is practiced and delivered. She’s volunteered for over four years to arm the public with free legal knowledge as the founder, co-producer and host of a legal call-in show with Rogers TV (Toronto Speaks Legal Advice).

The Vertical Lifestyle:

Condos offer community, affordability and eco-friendly living Zoning codes that limit housing production, and the flight back to urban living have left North American cities with only one (unrealistic) solution: create more land. A more realistic solution would revamp archaic zoning codes and reposition our current housing stock. The timing couldn’t be better as cultural shifts are inviting–even demanding–vertical living… with a twist.

Return to “Traditional” Values For the first time since 1880, young adults are more likely to live with their parents than with a spouse. More millennials – married or single – are also choosing to eschew owning large homes in the suburbs in favour of renting small “boxes in the sky” that offer convenience, shared space, and technology that automates daily tasks like turning lights on and off, and optimizing the unit’s heating and cooling to reduce one’s carbon footprint. But, more important than all of these features, condo dwellers are seeking community. This trend is demonstrated by the increasing number of adults who choose to co-live with other adults, the formation of impressive neighbourhoods in the sky, and the fact that adults are listing ‘community’ as one of the most important factors in choosing where to live.

for affordable living. These agents believe that the best solution to improve affordability is not to boost demand by offering rebates and low interest rates. Rather, they beleive that provincial and local governments should address the supply side by offering more flexible housing strategies and zoning that permits the creation of duplexes, rentals and mixed-use development. however government-driven intensification programs are often met with political resistance as intensification is associated with the loss of community, accessibility of services, greenspace and privacy. But as today’s condo dwellers and developments prove, this is not necessarily the case.

Dog-walking groups are the new social norm among the condo community.

Examples of the communities that are being built “in the sky” are dog-walking groups. Fellow condo-dwelling canine lovers have become friends, dog sit for each other and throw petfriendly parties. Another community in Toronto’s downtown core gathers monthly to play trivia and tennis games. Toronto Life, a popular Toronto magazine, reports stories about renters and owners from diverse backgrounds who become friends and find their true love – none of which would have happened had they lived in a sprawling suburb instead of a tightknit community.

The Well – a Toronto mixed-use development sprawling across the western side of Spadina Avenue, from Wellington to Front – is a prime example of intensification done well. The Well incorporates greenspace, clever architecture and public promenades in order to put a focus on green living and community, while also providing privacy for its residents.

The Sharing Movement The sharing economy is here to stay. Think Uber, Zipcar, Airbnb, Kickstarter and Upwork as some of the companies that offer a new way of traveling, building businesses and working. Now, this multibillion-dollar trend is part of how our homes are built. Dubbed as “adult dorm rooms”, co-living provides an affordable way for adults to have exclusive use of their own bedroom, while sharing a variety of on-site amenities such as tech-equipped kitchens, vegetable-producing gardens, fitness facilities, and child-care services. A critical component to the success of co-living, and condo living, is that the homes are part of a larger development that also houses numerous practical services, entertainment and greenspace available for all. Today’s buyer wants the convenience that comes with a grocery store, pet groomer, and local bar steps away. According to a study by CallisonRTKL Inc.—a design consultancy firm—62% of people moving in the next five years want to live in mixed-use communities as opposed to residential-only communities. While community, convenience and minimalism are behind the appeal of condo living, we can’t ignore another critical fact—it’s also because of affordability.

Affordability

Co-living provides an affordable solution for young adults looking to enter the market.

It’s also increasingly common in new builds in North America and Western Europe to incorporate technology that automatically turns off heating or cooling facilities when a room isn’t in use, and turns down blinds or tints windows in order to reduce and conserve energy. Even without such tech integrations, living in smaller spaces is simply better for the environment – smaller spaces require less energy to heat, cool and light. Given our reversion back to community and all the conveniences that today’s developments provide, the expression that living in a

Affordability is a problem across all of Ontario’s markets. Chestnut Park agents in Collingwood, Prince Edward County, and Bracebridge report that downsizers and millennials are even being pushed out of secondary markets – once a beacon of hope

condo is equivalent to “living in a box” is passé. Today’s builders understand that they’re building not only a structure, but also a community that’s good for both the environment and our mental and financial health.

Helping Your Child Purchase a Home? Know your options

SARAH BULL, PARTNER & PORTFOLIO MANAGER, KJ HARRISON AND PHILIP LIEBERMAN, PARTNER & PORTFOLIO MANAGER, KJ HARRISON

A

s a financial management adviser to high-net-worth individuals and families, we see more and more clients with that question on their minds. It’s understandable. Over the past decade, housing prices in Toronto have roughly doubled, and they show few signs of slowing down. Often, young Torontonians simply do not have the savings to manage a substantial down payment on even a modest home. It’s no wonder, then, that parents who have the means are increasingly deciding to help out.

As natural as it is for parents to want to help their children, it is not a decision to be taken lightly. Beyond the impact on the parents’ financial situation, gifting or lending money to children for a home purchase can have legal and tax implications – and may even impact family dynamics and relationships.

// FINANCIAL HEALTH //

At KJ Harrison, we take a holistic approach to financial management, including investment services and financial advice. So when it comes to supporting a child’s home purchase, our message is clear: make sure you know your options, get the financial and legal advice you need to make the choice that is right for your family, and then integrate it into your long-term financial strategy. Every family is different. That is why we work closely with our clients to understand not just their financial situation, but also their goals and their expectations for themselves and their families. If supporting children in a home purchase is among those, we can develop a strategy for the transaction that fits into a long-term financial plan; we can also coordinate with legal and accounting counsel to help ensure clients are equipped to make informed decisions.

Here are three options for helping a child buy a home that our clients often consider: • Gifting the money: If parents know they will have a legacy and prefer to see that money used now, they may choose to simply give funds towards their child’s home. While it is perhaps the simplest option, gifting could become complicated in the future. For instance, if your child’s marriage breaks down, that gift may be considered part of the marital estate, and your child’s soon-to-be ex may be entitled to half of it.

• Lending the money: Structuring support for a home purchase as a mortgage could mitigate risks to a family’s capital, since the mortgage is a debt that would have to be repaid upon sale of the property. One potential complication: if an additional bank mortgage is required, the loan could affect the borrowers’ debt service ratio and their mortgage eligibility.

• Gifting your residence: Obviously not for every parent, but if the timing is right – perhaps you’re ready to downsize, or just want a change – gifting a principal residence could be a sound choice. Beyond the benefit of keeping a property with emotional value in the family, no capital gains or land transfer taxes would be incurred (as long as the parents own the home outright).

As you can see, a number of options are available, each with their own benefits and risks. Above all, if you are considering supporting a child in what is likely the biggest purchase of their lives – and a substantial one for you – make sure you get the advice that is right for you and your family. The Writers’ Trust Of Canada ‘The quiet giant’ of Canadian literature grows louder BY LESLEY KENNY PHOTOGRAPHY BY CR TOM SANDLER

Established as a non-profit in 1976, through the concerted efforts of Margaret Atwood, Graeme Gibson, Margaret Laurence, David Young and Pierre Berton, the Writers’ Trust of Canada not only celebrates Canadian writers, but awards them with generous cheques.

A

t the 2019 Writers’ Trust awards night, open to the public by request, publishers, editors, agents, friends and family supporters gathered to celebrate an impressive roster of new and renowned Canadian writers. Before the formal awards portion of the evening, the lobby of the Glenn Gould studio was buzzing. Instagrammable canapés were expertly whisked through the crowd as wine glasses were (re)filled in an atmosphere of nervous anticipation and glad-handing. In true Canadian style, finalists were not chilling in the green room, looking though their swag bags. Instead, the esteemed writers were shoulder-to-shoulder with the rest of the lobby crowd, getting their pictures taken on the red carpet in front the of the Writers’ Trust logo, or, in some cases, sitting along the side, quietly waiting for the formal part of the evening to begin. Writers are used to spending a lot of time alone and the sudden burst of attention can be overwhelming. Sharon Butala, one of five finalists for the Rogers Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize, was there with an entourage of supporters including her son and granddaughter. The Season of Fury and Wonder (Coteau Books), a collection of short stories each told from the point of view of an old woman protagonist, is Butala’s 20th book in a long and distinguished literary career. In the same category as the 79-year-old prolific author, 25-year-old Téa Mutonji’s debut book, Shut Up You’re Pretty (Arsenal Pulp Press), is a series of linked, coming-of-age stories about a young Congolese-Canadian girl growing up in the suburbs of Toronto. The diversity among finalist books is a testament to the Writers’ Trust jurors, many of whom read 125 books, from more than 50 publishers, in the year leading up to the award night that celebrates poetry, short stories, children’s literature, nonfiction, and fiction. >

The Writers’ Trust administers a total of 10 annual awards and four programs. The awards range from prizes for emerging writers under 35, emerging LGBTQ+ writers, the Journey Prize for a short story, political writing, and career awards, to the prestigious $50,000 Rogers Writers’ Trust Prize for Fiction, won this year by André Alexis for his novel Days By Moonlight (Coach House Books), and the $60,000 Hilary Weston Writers’ Trust Prize for Nonfiction won in 2019 by Jenny Heijun Wills for her memoir, Older Sister. Not Necessarily Related. (McClelland & Stewart). Programs include writer residencies, the annual Margaret Laurence Memorial Lecture, and an emergency financial assistance fund.

Two annual flagship fundraising events are much-anticipated literary evenings. At the 2019 Writers’ Trust Gala in Toronto, Montreal writer Heather O’Neill was awarded the prestigious Writers’ Trust Fellowship. Politics and the Pen is held at the Fairmont Château Laurier in Ottawa, where politicians, writers and leaders in the arts and business gather to celebrate Canadian writing and award the Shaughnessy Cohen prize for political writing. Charles Foran steps into the role of Executive Director in January, 2020. Foran was the 2018 recipient of the Writers’ Trust Fellowship. Outgoing Executive Director Mary Osborne says of her 11 years leading the literary organization, “With a pilot mentorship project underway and a couple of exciting program ideas in development, I’m confident that it won’t be long before we’re giving a million dollars a year directly to Canadian writers. >

The Writers’ Trust’s newest program, Rising Stars, matches five writers under 35 with a Writers’ Trust award-winning author. Rising Stars recipients each receive $5,000 and the career and writing guidance of their more experienced mentors.

Having made such a huge impact on so many writers and books, the Writers’ Trust has been called by Margaret Atwood ‘the quiet giant of Canadian literature.’ We aim to get a bit louder.”

Jenny Heijun Wills. The 2019 winner of the Hilary Weston Writers’ Trust Prize for Nonfiction is Jenny Heijun Wills for her memoir Older Sister. Not Necessarily Related. (McClelland & Stewart). This is Wills’ first publication, “except for a couple of poems, a few years ago,” she tells me. While on sabbatical – Wills is an Associate Professor of English at the University of Winnipeg – she experienced a bout of insomnia and put it to good use: “I started writing poems and scenes and when I had about 90 pages, I thought, ‘Oh! Maybe this is the book I should be writing instead of the academic book I’d planned!’” Born in South Korea, Jenny was adopted as an infant by white Canadian parents. “Being a transracial adoptee meant that part of my life was visible to every stranger that saw me,” she explains. Her memoir, told in fragments and letters, explores her search for her biological parents whom she discovers are alive and living in South Korea. Months of often painful experiences in her country of birth resulted in an unanticipated discovery: “I was so focused on finding my first mom but was surprised at the importance of finding siblings. Siblings aren’t responsible for any of those choices that parents made and, in many cases, don’t know the story.” One of Jenny’s Korean-born sisters now lives near her in Winnipeg. Jenny Heijun Wills is the first Korean-born Canadian to win the prestigious Hilary Weston Writers’ Trust Prize for Nonfiction. In a sense, Older Sister. Not Necessarily Related. got its publishing opportunity because of the Writers’ Trust. According to Jenny, “I was reflecting with my agent and editor backstage that she had pitched my book to an editor two years ago, at the Writers’ Trust!” Chestnut Park Real Estate is a proud sponsor of the Writers’ Trust of Canada. Unique amongst literary organizations worldwide, the Writers’ Trust supports and encourages Canadian writers not just through generous awards, but also with publicity and promotion as well as extensive opportunities to develop, as writers.

ineyards, expansive farmlands and apple orchards form the entry to one of Ontario’s most unusual attractions. The Lake on the Mountain sits over 60 metres above Lake Ontario’s Bay of Quinte. Its very existence seems to defy logic.

Aptly named for its precarious location, the lake’s source of water is unknown. This phenomenon has inspired many theories on the lake’s origin. The Mohawk peoples referred to the lake as Onokenoga, or Lake of the Gods, and believed that spirits dwelled within its waters. The area’s first settlers believed that the lake itself was bottomless, or perhaps acted as a pathway to another realm. Other explanations for the lake’s existence involve volcanos, meteorites, or glacial whirlpools. Scientists theorize that the origin of the lake can be traced back to events that caused a sinkhole, a natural phenomenon commonly found in limestone deposits. But this theory doesn’t stop visitors from looking on in bewilderment at this majestic, fresh-water oasis. Glenora, the community located at the base of the escarpment, is steeped in Ontario’s industrial past. Saw and grist mills produced flour, a major commodity during exciting economic times for the region. From 1796 until the early 1900s, the bay’s excellent harbour facilities, along with the abundance of water power supplied by the lake, spurred the creation of a bustling community, well before confederation. The lake is now home to Lake on the Mountain Resort, a family-run business named after the unique

lake and its puzzling location. The resort itself is perched more than 60 metres above Lake Ontario and offers breathtaking views of the Bay of Quinte below. The resort has two restaurants, the Miller House and The Inn. The Miller House was originally built in 1796 as the home of the owner of a successful mill on the nearby escarpment. The historic stone building was left empty for a number of years before its restoration in the summer of 2013. From the patio, diners are treated to dramatic views of the water below. The Inn, much like the Miller House, is a nod to the lake’s past. Originally built as a general store in 1796, The Inn, with its original stonework and quaint charm, now proudly serves fresh ingredients sourced from local farmers, fishers and other organic producers. Visitors aren’t limited to the resort to enjoy the beauty of the lake and surrounding area. Benches and picnic tables are available throughout Lake on the Mountain Provincial Park for your own private views of the lake and all of its natural – if inexplicable – wonder.

If you’re cruising on a twisty country road or handling a stressful extended highway drive, this is an attractive luxury mid-sized utility vehicle with a lot to offer — fast and powerful yet easy on fuel, stylish outside and sumptuous inside yet profoundly functional, the all new Infiniti QX50 is complex, and an extremely appealing composite.

T

he internal combustion gasoline engine has seen some remarkable advances in the modern era. It started with computer controlled spark and fuel injection systems and more recently advanced turbo-charging and cylinder deactivating systems have taken power output and fuel economy to new levels. Now, Infiniti has raised the technology bar yet again with the very first “variable compression” gasoline engine in a production vehicle. It’s in the all-new Infiniti QX50.

Even if you’re not fascinated by what’s under the stylish clamshell hood, the new QX50 is a very attractive luxury mid-sized utility vehicle with a lot more to offer. To start with, its all-new chassis is structurally stronger (by 23%) than its predecessor, thanks to the use of another automotive first, SHF (Super High Formability) high-tensile steel. Winner of the AJAC award for Best Canadian Mid-Size Premium Utility Vehicle, the QX50 comes in five trim levels; Luxe, Essential, Proactive, Sensory and Autograph. The latter comes with quilted leather upholstery with suede accents on “NASA zero-gravity” seating. An impressive list of advanced safety features includes the semi-autonomous driving Pro-Pilot Assist system, a headup display, back-up collision intervention and forward emergency braking with pedestrian detection, yet the price tag on the top trim is under $60,000. In Canada, every QX50 comes with the new VC-Turbo engine, all-wheel-drive and, in my view, the best performing continuously variable transmission (CVT) on the market. The smooth, calm yet robust way that this small VC-Turbo engine can deliver power is extraordinary. It’s like having two engines. One is super-efficient and athletic (9.0 L/100 km combined city/highway) with high (14 to 1 ratio) compression and the other is raw power and muscle (280 lbs-ft of torque) with low (8 to 1 ratio) compression. And it can slide between these extremes depending on driver and driving requirements.

// AUTOMOTIVE //

“Best of both worlds” must be the Infiniti mantra. It also applies to the spacious interior of QX50, which is surprisingly practical despite its ritzy furnishings. The heated split folding and reclining rear seats are on a track that allows them to slide back and forth 14 cm (5 1/2 inches). This allows extra leg room or extra cargo space (880 litres expands to 1,048 litres) if needed, and cargo space increases to 1,699 litres with the rear seats folded. I was particularly impressed by how quiet the passenger cabin was at highway speeds. What’s called an “active torque rod” under the hood is a clever new Infiniti weapon in the fight to dampen unwanted noises and vibrations. Cranking up the radio volume is the old way, and in QX50 that could be an awesome 16 speaker Bose audio system.

Powerfully elegant and every bit as functional interior design. Sure, the QX50 is a fun vehicle to drive on a twisty country road, particularly if you drop it into the sport mode and play with the transmission shift paddles. There are, however, other times when driving can be tedious and stressful, for example, extended highway drives and congested traffic. That’s where Infiniti’s Pro Pilot Assist system can be a tension-relieving asset. While not fully autonomous, it’s just a finger tip on the steering wheel away from it. Fast and powerful yet easy on fuel, stylish outside and sumptuous inside yet profoundly functional, the all new Infiniti QX50 is complex, and an extremely appealing composite.

BEST OF BOTH WORLDS - HIGH COMPRESSION

Power and better fuel economy. The VC-Turbo engine can also run in what’s known as an Atkinson Cycle mode in certain situations, to provide even better fuel efficiency.

BEST OF BOTH WORLDS – LOW COMPRESSION

Turbochargers per form better with lower compression. The VC-Turbo engine can produce more torque (280 lb-f t) than the larger V6 engine (267 lb-f t) in the previous generation

In Conversation With Julia Hepburn

Hamilton-based artist Julia Hepburn creates fantastical dioramas–tiny sculptural scenes that are surreal, enchanting and even pleasantly eerie at times. With rich details displayed on every miniature stage, her work tackles gothic themes while reclaiming a child-like curiosity with the natural world. Here, animals are ascribed human traits as we step into a still from an otherworldly picture show. And the results are most certainly an eye-catching escape.

Adaptation (Bread and Honey) Mixed Media Sculpture 11”x 4.75”x 11”

What made you gravitate toward sculpture, and in particular dioramas? I’ve always been interested in miniatures; there’s a lot of room to create essentially another world in a way that you can’t really do with other mediums. It lends itself to a broader narrative, so you’re seeing a vignette of something bigger. Viewers are invited to step into that space and create a story around it. I like to keep that story open so it’s an interactive experience. They’re meant to be these small little glimpses into a world that not a lot of people necessarily take the time to look at.

What sort of themes do you like to explore? A lot of them have an environmental angle. It’s disarming because it’s almost like a doll’s house, but at the same time it addresses these darker issues. It is kind of playful and silly in some ways, but it’s not a threatening experience.

Where do you find inspiration? Initially, it was very much the fairytale genre. The stories are super dark in Brothers Grimm Fairy Tales. I just adore illustrator Edward Gorey and the mood he’s able to create with very little. A lot of times, I just look at my everyday interactions with nature and animals.

What is it that draws you toward fables and folklore? It’s nostalgic. These older stories were the first ones that I felt were willing to discuss death and betrayal in a way that was designed to be for children. It walks the line of communicating a moral, but it does so in a way that’s extremely imaginative. And there’s a lot of anthropomorphism, which I’m very much drawn to. >

Even Children Get Older, 2019 Mixed Media Sculpture 33’’x 6.3”x 27.5”

How do you approach your creative process? My most recent works are reflective of how I’ve been feeling about our current climate crisis. I’ll look to nature to inspire a way of communicating that specific feeling. The work I’m in the middle of building right now is a scene on the plains of a buffalo pushing over a telegraph pole. At the same time as a lot of colonizers were trying to wipe out the buffalo in order to deal with what they called “the Indian problem” in the States, they were trying to put up these telegraph poles to communicate across the country. They would be sabotaged by buffalo and knocked over right away. It’s reflective of a historical happening but it’s about animals revolting against human designs on the natural world.

How do you cope with creative blocks? For me, it’s always a walk in nature. It takes your brain to a different place. You’d be amazed at the small things that pop up when you pay close attention. Researching and learning about animals allows me to see myself on the same level as all the life around me.

Why is art important? It gives me an opportunity to share emotions and concerns with other people. Especially with the works that are the most emotionally stirring for me, it offers a bit of a lifeline. There’s obviously the aesthetics and the pleasure that comes from seeing something beautiful and how that enriches people’s lives but also it’s a way of sharing private thoughts and communicating on a level that you wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity to do with strangers.

A Visual Arts Showcase The Toronto Biennial of Art 2019 PHOTOGRAPHY BY GILLIAN HARRIS (TORONTO BIENNIAL)

The Toronto Biennial of Art was conceived as an opportunity to honour and explore underrepresented histories, all while temporarily inhabiting repurposed sites along the city’s waterfront.

I

magine 72 days of complimentary art exhibitions, each designed to engage with the most pressing issues of our era, through a localized lens. Picture a wide spectrum of programs conceived to bridge communities and advance critical global conversations from a variety of different perspectives, while inspiring onlookers along the way. Featuring more than 40 Canadian, Indigenous and international artists, and established with a mandate to be as culturally connected and diverse as Toronto itself, the Toronto Biennial of Art recently concluded its inaugural 10-week run. For years, the idea for this ambitious, cross-disciplinary arts project had been swirling around in the mind of Patrizia Libralato, the Biennial’s founder and executive director. The local art consultant says it first took root during her decades working in the art industry across multiple continents. How do we turn the city into an international destination for art? How do we make Canadian art top of mind both at home and 30

abroad? How do we create a powerful and inclusive moment for Toronto in which creativity and big ideas are supported, shared, celebrated and elevated? (torontobiennial.org) Libralato resolved to answer these pressing questions. Over the next few years, the Biennial evolved from being a hypothetical venture to a full-time gig, with untold hours dedicated to building a curatorial advisory and a board, in addition to convincing the City of Toronto, donors and funders, to support initial priority groundwork. Called The Shoreline Dilemma, for this debut edition, Libralato and the Biennial brain trust, including curators Candice Hopkins and Tairone Bastien, set their sights on 15 venues spanning a stretch of Lake Ontario. Their objective? To address how we learn and listen with the lake, and what it means to be “in relation.” At the formerly vacant 259 Lake Shore Blvd East, a nondescript building whose existence represents the area’s economic history, a massive wooden replica of Toronto’s harbour called attention to the human-made alterations of the land and waterscape.

At the renovated Small Arms Inspection Building, a multi-purpose arts centre originally part of a large munitions plant, artworks examined the narratives and often destructive practices of geologists, prospectors, settlers, and agriculturalists. At the Harbourfront Centre, one of the few places in Toronto where multiple forms of production, performance and international programming coexist, nearby boats were transformed into an orchestra-on-water, spotlighting music written for the horns of leisure vessels. At Riverdale Park West, which evokes Toronto’s history of altered, buried and polluted rivers, the forgotten network of water that runs beneath our feet was brought to life through sculpture, accompanied by a guided walk and workshop led by poets, Indigenous knowledge keepers, and storytellers. Colombia’s Abel Rodríguez received The Toronto Biennial of Art Prize for his painting of the Igara Paraná River region.

The Toronto Biennial of Art Emerging Artist Prize which recognizes a promising, early-career artist, was awarded to Turkey’s Hera Büyüktaşçıyan for her installation.

With each carrying a value of $20,000, the Biennial awarded two participating artists. For his highly detailed drawings inspired by the Igara Paraná River region in his homeland, Colombia’s Abel Rodríguez received The Toronto Biennial of Art Prize, which recognizes an outstanding contribution. The Toronto Biennial of Art Emerging Artist Prize, which recognizes a promising, early-career artist, was awarded to Turkey’s Hera Büyüktaşçıyan for her installation alluding to histories of migration and retracing lost fragments of social and personal narratives. Aruba

A Caribbean gem Pack your beachwear, load your tablet with books, and head to this always-sunny Caribbean island for the best kind of R&R: a do-nothing week. Nothing except unroll your towel on a white, sandy beach, float in a turquoise sea, return to your spot then read, rest… and repeat.

B

eaches in Aruba are everything. They’re wide, immaculate, and the powder-fine white sand stays cool even under noon-day sun. Local vendors won’t disturb you as you stretch out near the shoreline, and, if you want to indulge in some vacation day drinking, there are casual restaurant bars right on the sand. Eagle Beach, on the northwest side of the island, is frequently voted one of the best beaches in the Caribbean. On the east side of the island, Baby Beach is an annual family favourite. With average annual temps of 28 degrees Celsius, Aruba’s weather is guaranteed beachy. If there’s a sprinkle of rain in the morning, it’s soon gone in this desert climate. Just ask the tall, columnar cacti. What’s better than snoozing on a picture-perfect beach with the bluest water you’ve ever seen just a few feet from your toes? Only one thing: horseback riding along that beach. At sunset. A horseback tour guide will meet you at your hotel and drive you to a ranch where you’ll meet your trusty steed before heading out to explore the island. Some of the tours will take you near the ruins of old gold mills and mines. If the thought of scaling a large animal doesn’t appeal, you could book an ATV tour, rent your own jeep or hike in Arikok National Park which takes up almost 20% of this 32-km-long island. At the north end, where the beaches are rugged and rocky, you’ll find herds of goats and donkeys. Before cars, donkeys were the main mode of transportation on Aruba. Now you can visit their donkey sanctuary to pet and feed (but not ride) the braying citizens. >

A horseback tour guide will meet you at your hotel and drive you to a ranch where you will saddle up and head out to explore the island. Aerial view over beautiful Aruba.

Whether in the tourist-oriented town of Palm Beach, or in scruffy-but-colourful Oranjestad, the capital of Aruba, you’ll find luxury brand shops, galleries, casinos and restaurants. Fresh, local seafood is on most menus. The incredible ethnic diversity of Aruba means that you can choose from a wide variety of cuisine. Aruba has two golf resorts. Book a day at the PGA-approved 18-hole course at Tierra De Sol Resort, at the tip of the island, or at the 9-hole links at Divi Village Golf and Beach Resort. Heads up, tee-time on the island can run you close to US$300. Unlike other Caribbean islands, Aruba sits outside the hurricane belt which helps make it the shipwreck diving capital of the world. There’s also plenty of familyfriendly snorkelling opportunities. Carnival season starts in November, but the big months are January and February. Join in the colourful festivities and nightlife each evening, then recover on the beach the next day. Remember, those easterly trade winds, though delightful on a hot day, can be deceiving. Keep reapplying that sunscreen. Aruba is one of the safest destinations in the Caribbean, both day and night. Tourism drives the economy and they know how to welcome guests. You’ll find that most people here speak English. 34

Refined Rustic BY ANNA CIPOLLONE PHOTOGRAPHY BY GIZELLE GRIARTE

A charming farmhouse-inspired addition gets the royal treatment from Alison Milne Design Studio.

A

lison Milne was already dreaming up the perfect plans when she fell for the property on Rusholme Road. “It was a house that I had bid on to purchase for myself,” laughs the interior designer. After the disappointment of losing the bid, Milne’s Toronto-based design studio received a surprising inquiry from the new homeowners. They’d been referred to Alison by a friend, and were eager to have her involved in the renovation–but never expected she’d already be familiar with the space. “I absolutely loved the house,” says Milne, noting that she was thrilled to get a chance to realize her vision for the space–albeit for someone else. With floor plans and a precise aesthetic in mind to augment the property’s potential, the designer was up for the challenge that came about quite coincidentally. “It was super organic and a really nice match,” she says, “I was able to execute what I would have done–but for them.” The clients were keen on expanding the home with a communal living space, where kids could do homework or play while dinner was prepped in the kitchen. It was a complete gut project intended to add a cozy country feel while preserving the history of the house in Toronto’s Dufferin Grove neighbourhood. The space started out very dark, inspiring the 17-foot addition that brought the outdoors in with far more natural light. “Opening up the whole back of the house to the stunning yard and allowing the light to come into the space made all the difference,” says Milne, crediting the wall of windows by Pella for the addition’s sun-soaked rooms. The concept hinged on an aesthetic that feels partly historic farmhouse, with contemporary accents and appliances adding a modern angle. The use of pale blue-grey kitchen cabinetry means the entire room’s ambience shifts depending on the time of day, while the beadboard and chicken wire in the upper cabinets adds a delicate nod to heritage style. Midcentury modern furniture was thoughtfully matched up with plush contemporary décor to make preserved features like the stained-glass windows really pop. Given the wood’s natural and distressed look, wide plank, honey-hued flooring added texture and is juxtaposed against simple and clean interiors with artwork selected by Alison Milne Gallery. > Art by Patrick Lajoie. 36

But even with a designer’s dream project plucked ripe for her, there were inevitable challenges to face. “In order to gain ceiling height in the new portion of the house, we had a large beam installed to hold up the existing back,” explains Milne. Instead of trying to hide this structural work, she decided to accentuate this as a feature by cladding the steel beam in reclaimed barn wood. “It really added a unique ceiling treatment to separate the kitchen and living room,” she says. In the master bathroom, the original fireplace became the guiding force for the entire suite. Adding warmth to the otherwise modern bathroom created a soft and inviting spa-like mood while the antique fireplace and its white exposed brick are well complemented by stylish brass fixtures. 38

West African Cuisine Hot for all the right reasons BY LESLEY KENNY

West African food is hot and not just because of the fiery chili peppers on many ingredient lists. Predicted by Forbes to be one of 2020s hottest food trends, West African food is ranked among the world’s healthiest diets for its staples of fruit, veggies, whole grains, nuts and fish. And, it’s incredibly tasty.

S

low-cooked for hours over fire or coals, West African hearty soups and stews are usually served with rice. Many dishes are flavoured with a base of onions, tomatoes and chili peppers (fresh or powdered). Added flavours are used sparingly and include fermented spices that take days to prepare, and African potash, a native salt, both of which give the food its deep, rich flavour.

are common and form the basis of the popular deep-fried akara fritter. Various squash, egg plant, okra (used to thicken soups), groundnuts, seeds and plantains are all important components of the West African diet. Until the recent addition of red meat, animal protein was provided by fresh seafood and fowl. Dried and smoked fish is used like a condiment in this region and flaked into soups and stews. Many dishes are vegetarian and vegan friendly.

Despite the colonizing influence of British, French and other European nations, West Africa has maintained its various traditional cuisines. Artificial boundaries, imposed by colonial powers, often cut through pre-existing territories, tribes and cultures. The results are 21st Century countries that include a variety of cooking styles within their borders. Although some West African nations are known for a particular dish, the idea of a strictly Nigerian, or Senegalese or Ghanaian cuisine doesn’t take into account this history.

Jollof rice—Thiéboudienne, in Senegal—probably the most beloved West African dish, is made differently by each country in the region, its tradition, ingredients and serving style defended fiercely. World Jollof Rice Day is celebrated each August 22 and if you’re curious about the fuss, there are websites and blogs devoted to this dish. But if you attempt to make the spicy stewed-tomato-and-rice dish yourself, don’t post your tweak on social media. Ask Jamie Oliver how that can go wrong.

West African food includes more leafy greens than your expert green grocer could name. Locally-grown grains include sorghum, maize, millet, and rice. Traditionally, wheat was not part of the diet here but has become an (imported) staple. Black-eyed peas

A Google search for “West African restaurant,” will get you a “10 Best” list for many cities. If you want to try a West African meal but you’re not wild about spicy food, you can always take a walk on the mild side.

Avec Plaisir’s fitters consult with clients on matters of lifestyle and the look clients want to achieve before they select a few bras that both flatter and fit perfectly. This highly personalized experience means that women only try on what actually fits, what actually looks good and what actually suits their lifestyles. This process is ultimately faster than online lingerie shopping because no returns are necessary. The conventional wisdom is that today’s consumer, especially millennials, shop online almost exclusively. The effortlessness of online shopping is a factor behind the multi-billiondollar e-commerce revolution that continues to gather devout online shoppers. Yet, Avec Plaisir’s client base continues to grow, especially among technophile millennials. And Vasilia has a hunch as to why: “buying lingerie that fits and works for your body type isn’t as easy as buying a shirt, book or furniture.” Vasilia, the engine behind Avec Plaisir, believes she’s doing more than making clients feel and look beautiful.

Vasilia’s fashion prediction is lace, lace and more lace.

Lingerie remains one of the most difficult products to get right, online. Women’s lingerie and hosiery returns and cart abandonments are some of the highest in retail e-commerce and women who do buy lingerie online are often disappointed because they feel misled about the fit, look and feel of a product. Vasilia’s fervent belief that lingerie is an important part of women’s well-being is why she rebuffed investor offers to bring her brand to a national and even international level. Doing so, she explains, would damage the integrity of her mission; she wouldn’t be able to control the quality of training and she wouldn’t be able to purchase her lingerie from small designers who produce the quality undergarments that make Avec Plaisir special. She doesn’t regret her decision to stay local and customer-centric. Wiarton Willie Festival

Helps shake off end-of-winter blahs By early February, most of us are feeling the weight of the season. Spring can’t come soon enough. Wiarton, Ontario, invites you to come and shake off the end of winter with a community party that also heralds the pending arrival— hopefully sooner rather than later—of spring and its rejuvenating warmth.

Wiarton Willie reveals his Groundhog Day prediction of an early (or late) spring. Photo by: Shelley Partington - True North Photography

T

he Wiarton Willie Festival, a much-beloved and iconic event for this community, has been lifting winter spirits for decades. Every spring, this white rodent (ok, and his successors) has starred in his own show, emerging from his den each February to offer his expert prognostication on whether spring will arrive early or late. Media from across Canada descend on this village of 2,000 to report on whether or not the titular albino groundhog sees his shadow. An anxious hush falls over the crowd as the groggy groundhog pokes his twitching nose out of his den. The dignitaries of Willie’s Shadow Cabinet, all dressed in formal attire, look on. Then the town’s mayor asks Willie for his springtime weather forecast. Good or bad, everyone celebrates the word. But there’s far more to the Wiarton Willie Festival than the prediction of an early (or late) spring. There’s also a pancake festival, musical bands, a Lion’s Club Hockey Tournament, the Willie Fest parade, a craft show, mixed curling bonspiel, fireworks, a PJ party, youth and adult dances, and more. The festival attracts thousands of visitors and media from across Canada and beyond. “Wiarton Willie is immersed within the fabric of our community,” says Janice Jackson, Mayor of the Town of South Bruce Peninsula. “We’ve been celebrating Willie for 64 years and he’s our most famous celebrity. We’re so proud that people around the world know Wiarton Willie!” For more information go to www.southbrucepeninsula.com The 2020 Wiarton Willie Festival will be held February 20, 2020.

Winter at Scenic Caves A unique winter experience BY ANDREW HIND

Forget the biting cold and snowstorms - when the snow arrives at Scenic Caves Nature Adventures in Collingwood, the natural beauty of a winter wonderland opens up, perfect for cross-country skiers and snowshoers.

W

inter is a season of unique delights. Yes, the cold can be biting and snow can grind traffic to a halt. But if you find the right setting—that beautiful, natural spot where snow mounds up like fluffy pillows and drapes evergreens like Christmas garland—there is no season more beautiful. It’s places like that where you’ll be inspired to get out and play in the fresh air, to experience all the adventure that winter affords. One such spot is Scenic Caves Nature Adventures near Collingwood. Once the snow arrives—and it arrives early 50

and often here—the park becomes a winter playground for cross-country skiers and snowshoers. “The conditions here are ideal for winter sports because of higher elevation—we’re located on the highest spot of the Niagara Escarpment—and the colder lake-effect conditions ensure that we receive plenty of snowfall,” explains Linda Service, director of marketing for Scenic Caves Nature Adventures.

Families can enjoy The Nordic Centre, home to 27 kilometres of terrain that is groomed daily, perfect for both classic and skate skiers.

“In addition, the trails predominantly go through 100-year old forests and therefore are well protected, meaning the snow lasts longer.” “But,” Service hastens to add, “while nature does most of the work, we do our share by maintaining the trails daily to ensure the best experience.” Scenic Caves is located within one of Canada’s 18 UNESCO biosphere reserves. For generations it has been beloved for its scenic views overlooking Lake Huron, the iconic stone formations that are the basis of its name, and it’s enthralling Petun First Nations lore. But it was a fair-weather attraction only. That changed in 2002 with the opening of the Scenic Caves Nordic Centre, allowing visitors to experience the gloriously beautiful setting year-round. “Many people are looking to engage in winter adventures but want something less aggressive than downhill skiing, and where better than in landscape as attractive as ours,” enthuses Service. Strap on a pair of skis and glide along 27km of cross-country ski trails passing through where the silence is peace-inducing, the beauty of the snow-draped hills blissful. There are three trails of

Or put on snowshoes and trudge along 10km of trails weaving through snow mounded in soft, billowy folds. Again, there are three trails of varying difficulty: 1km for novices, 6km for intermediate, and an expert trail 10km in length. One of the appeals of snowshoeing is access to the 420-foot long suspension bridge (southern Ontario’s longest). Brave the slight sway to enjoy the spectacle of a vista encompassing 10,000 square kilometres of steel-grey Lake Huron. Whatever your chosen sport, keep your eyes peeled as you navigate the trails. A wide range of wildlife call Scenic Caves home, and when sunlight glistens off the snow deer, chattering squirrels, rabbits, and flittering birds like to come out to frolic. For a truly unique experience, round up a gang of 15 or more for a guided nighttime snowshoe hike. The moonlit forest transforms after dark, taking in a wild new atmosphere. Since our vision is impeded by darkness, our sense of hearing is heightened, making every rustling branch or soft crunch of the snow that much more intense. Listen closely; that faint noise may well be an owl on the hunt or the padding of a fox. The winter air may be chilly, but at Scenic Caves Nature Adventures the varied experiences are enough to warm you up.

Cheese Bliss in Thornbury: The Cheese Gallery BY ANDREW HIND

Ten years ago, Casey Thompson was working in corporate Canada when she was shocked to learn her company was downsizing and she would either have to move to the United States or lose the position she had worked so hard to attain. For the first time in years, her future was in doubt.

Casey Thompson, founder of The Cheese Gallery. Photo by: Julie Card, mycollingwood.ca

I didn’t want to go to the States, but also didn’t know what I would do,” she explains. “I began thinking ‘what am I passionate about? What’s the next opportunity?’ Being in a small town, I realized you have to create your own opportunity.” Thompson remembers the exact moment the idea that became The Cheese Gallery sprung to mind. “I was hiking with my girlfriends when it came to me: great cheese, good wine and delectable chocolates are perfectly paired with one another,” she explains. “So I asked myself, ‘why not open a place that marries the three’? I’d open a gourmet cheese shop and café.” She was confident The Cheese Gallery would find a perfect home in Thornbury, a creative community populated by galleries, artisan shops, restaurants, coffee roasters, bakeries, and craft cider makers. It’s a place where the imaginative spirit flourishes and customers and merchants value getting to know each other by name. 54

More than 80% of these businesses are owned and operated by women. Thompson isn’t really sure what’s fuelling the success of female-driven entrepreneurship in town, but notes there’s a sense of collaboration in the community that encourages women to take the plunge. “We’re a tight-knit community with a great spirit of togetherness,” she explains. Thompson remembers the exact date—June 10, 2010—when she bought the building on Bruce Street South, Thornbury’s main street, and started a new chapter in her life. The Cheese Gallery became a quick success. Customers, locals and tourists all fell in love with the shop’s unique offerings. From showstopping artisanal cheeses and delectable cookies, cakes, tarts and pastries, to teas and coffee and locally-made cider, The Cheese Gallery has something to please every palate. By popular demand, the café now offers light lunch fare, and yes, all of the selections make good use of the cheeses Thompson sells.

I didn’t want to go to the States, but also didn’t know what I would do,” she explains. “I began thinking ‘what am I passionate about? What’s the next opportunity?’ Being in a small town, I realized you have to create your own opportunity.

Think French onion soup, cheeseboards, and a mac-and-cheese option that elevates this dish to new heights. Patrons enjoy coffee, cakes and good conversation within a charming, gallery-like setting that perfectly reflects the artistic nature of Thornbury. To what does Thompson credit her success? “A great product is a given. I owe a lot of my success to first-rate suppliers,” she explains. “Three of my suppliers were recently named Grand Champion in their respective categories (butter tarts, dairy and sheep-based cheddar cheese) at the Royal Winter Fair, which gives you an example of the talent in our small community.” Thompson is humble, but if pressed will accept some credit for The Cheese Gallery’s success—and offer some advice to would-be entrepreneurs: “It takes a lot of hard work to run your own business and you need to have a vision, but one lesson I’ve learned is the need to surround yourself with good people.” And people are what The Cheese Gallery is really all about for Thompson. For this entrepreneur, the shop is about more than her livelihood. It’s also about giving something back to the community she loves. “Small, cozy shops are needed,” Thompson explains, “because they bring people together and create unique experiences that are vital to our health as a society”.

The iced trail winds 1.4 km through the park’s evergreen forest and, during Saturday’s Fire and Ice nights, it’s lined with hundreds of tiki torches. With its picturesque backdrop and fire-lit ambience, the winter trail has become a social media phenomenon. Between 2000 and 2017, winter visits to Arrowhead Provincial Park increased from 11,000 to more than 50,000, making it the busiest winter program in the Ontario Parks system. The park has become so popular on weekends that staff now advise guests to consider

Provincial Park offers activities for all winter tastes. The purchase of any day pass includes access to the tubing hill where tubes are provided by the park. There are 28 km of classic ski trails and 16 km of skate ski trails, ranging from beginner to expert level. Every year the trails play host to the annual Muskoka Loppet, which is set for January 26, 2020, this winter. The event draws hundreds of racers from across the province to compete in three different distances. >

well as off-trail snowshoeing through mature hardwood forest. In 2015, Arrowhead built a permanent skijoring trail which is now available throughout the entire season. Skijoring is a sport where a person on skis is pulled by a dog (or dogs). The word is derived from the Norwegian word skikjøring, meaning ski driving. Staff recommend that dogs weigh at least 30 lbs and be full-grown. To accommodate the increasing number of visitors to Arrowhead every winter, in 2018 the park officially opened their new Visitor Centre. At the Centre, guests can rent skates, snowshoes and skate skis. The Centre also includes a warm-up and lounge area with its beautiful stone fireplace. The fireplace mantle is made from a Douglas fir stop log, recycled from a Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry dam. Funding for the fireplace was donated by the Huntsville Ski Club and Arrowhead Nordic Ski Club. Located next to the Visitor Centre is a brand-new winterized picnic pavilion. The pavilion features its own stone fireplace, a small food preparation area, and a ski waxing room with five stations and ventilation hoods. Admission to Arrowhead Provincial Park is via a daily vehicle pass for $17 ($20 on weekends) and covers everyone in your car. All outdoor winter activities are weather dependent. Before heading out, be sure to check the park website for updates.

Skiing in Muskoka?

Hidden Valley’s not-so-well-kept secret BY MATT DRISCOLL

W

hen you think of Muskoka, downhill skiing might not (ski)jump to mind. But, since the early 1960s, Muskoka’s own Hidden Valley Highlands Ski Area has offered a picturesque location for those who want to hit the slopes. Located just outside of Huntsville, with a top elevation of 1,276 feet (390 m), this Muskoka ski resort looks out over Peninsula Lake and nearby Deerhurst Resort. Hidden Valley has four ski lifts and 13 runs - as well as an area for tobogganing. While the resort might not have the name recognition of its southern cousins like Blue Mountain and Horseshoe, it does lay claim to its own Olympic gold medallist. Dara Howell grew up on the ski runs at Hidden Valley before winning the gold medal in slopestyle skiing at the 2014 Olympics in Sochi and earning her way onto Team Canada for the 2018 Olympics in PyeongChang. Hidden Valley hosted parties for both of Howell’s appearances and has also become known for hosting events like the annual New Year’s Eve fireworks show and the Polar Bear Plunge the next day.

The hill sees an average winter snowfall of 343 cm (125 inches) and typically operates from December to March. When the snowmobile season peaks, Hidden Valley also offers access to more than 2,000 km of nearby trails.

Enjoy a family-friendly day on the slopes.

Hidden Valley offers night skiing runs and sits above the 100room Hidden Valley resort hotel. Recently under new ownership, the Hidden Valley resort has fashioned itself as a four-season, eco-friendly experience. The resort uses geothermal heating to cut back on greenhouse gasses and reduce the amount of energy consumed at the resort. For more than half a century, Hidden Valley has provided locals and visitors the opportunity to hit the slopes in one of the province’s most treasured scenic landscapes. Contact the Muskoka Ski Club for information about trial memberships.

Napa Valley’s Beringer is California’s oldest continually operating winery and its Rhine House veranda is an intimate setting for sampling the winery’s offering.

St. Helena is nicknamed “Napa Valley’s Main Street,” and it’s the birthplace of the region’s viticultural legacy and the area’s most desirable small town, with charming shops, galleries, cafes, and eateries. Among the more recognizable wineries are Beringer and Louis M. Martini, which happily coexist with boutique producers such as Vineyard 29 and Terra Valentine. Dining options include farm-to-table favorite The Charter Oak, while Thomas Keller’s acclaimed The French Laundry—widely regarded as the dining experience of a lifetime—is less than 15 minutes’ drive from St. Helena, in picturesque Yountville. Also nearby is The Restaurant at Auberge du Soleil, in Rutherford. Napa’s first fine-dining establishment opened its doors in 1981 and is today overseen by executive chef Robert Curry, who does amazing things with locally sourced seasonal ingredients. Book into one of the Auberge’s suites or private maisons so you can make the most of the sommelier’s excellent wine suggestions, and enjoy the establishment’s spa come morning. Napa Valley’s wine tourism gave rise to its famously good living, which offers a rich and varied leisure scene that’s unmatched by other winegrowing regions around the world. Between wining and dining, work up an appetite and enjoy the scenery with excellent biking, hiking, and golfing.

The Charter Oak in St. Helena is one of the most recognizable historic restaurant spaces in the Napa Valley, made up of two separate buildings, one of which is an old sherry house that dates back to the 1800s. Image: Kelly Puleio.

You can also take to the water at Lake Hennessey, to the east; the area’s largest reservoir, it’s perfect for fishing and boating. For an even more relaxed way of passing time, Calistoga, to the north, is a spaseeker’s haven, known for its mud baths and geothermal springs. The town also hosts a Saturday market showcasing produce from California’s farms and ranches. Connections to the region are superb, with flights into San Francisco, Oakland, or Sacramento airports, followed by a straightforward drive— around one hour and 40 minutes from any of them. Chef Thomas Keller’s French Laundry restaurant has been winning accolades since opening in 1994. Image: Michael Grimm.

Beds: 4 // Baths: 7 full // Partial Baths 2 // Sq. Ft: 8,148 // Type: Single Family Home The property, whose main residence is situated in The Covenant, a prized enclave within Rancho Santa Fe, was the longtime home of businessman Roland Sahm and his wife Ramona. The Sahms were well-known philanthropists in the San Diego community and owners of Thoroughbred racehorses, including the prizewinning champion Super Diamond. They purchased 50 acres of the property in 1969 and commissioned noted Laguna Beach architect Fred Briggs to design a grand contemporary main residence and guest house. They then hired esteemed interior designer Arthur Elrod to create the dramatic interiors. Elrod has become increasingly popular among mid-century design enthusiasts, and has been the subject of a recently published book devoted to his Palm Springs interiors. The Rancho Santa Fe home, which took three years to construct, is notable for its structural use of reclaimed redwood from Northern California, foundations of poured-in-place concrete and marble floors that were meticulously laid without grout. In addition, interior wood and cabinetry were milled on the property. The property’s many amenities include an outdoor tennis court, a six-stall equestrian barn adjoined by corrals and pastures, a lake and an organic lemon grove. Co-agent Linda Sansone added, “Two of the estate’s most impressive features are the great room with its vaulted ceilings and a spectacular pavilion that houses an indoor swimming pool and spa.”
