Enjoy The 28th Fall Festival & Marketplace by Michael Torelli Herald Staff

T

he end of summer may be near, but the Cheshire community will be participating in one more hoo-rah before the colder temperatures arrive. That’s right, the 28th annual Cheshire Chamber of Commerce Fall Festival and Marketplace will be held at Bartlem Park this weekend, and Chamber staff have a lot in store for visitors. Starting on Friday night, attendees will be able to enjoy the sweet treats and hearty meals of food trucks. Some of the trucks listed and their offerings so far include cupcakes from the Sugar Bakery, pierogies from Pierogies on Wheels, and the staple burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, and fries from the Firedog Food

Truck. Visitors will also be able to listen to the enjoyable tunes of Frank Critelli, as well as Cheshire’s own Christine Ohlman and Rebel Montez. “We’re trying to make it a two-day weekend,” explained Chamber President Sheldon Dill. “This is our most ambitious attempt to make Friday night a part of the whole weekend.” The main event, scheduled for Saturday, will commence at 10 a.m. with the annual craft show. An hour later, the Cheshire High School Marching Ram Band will conduct their performance, initiating a kickoff for the Fall Festival. Dill said Saturday will offer a lot of the normal Festival activities, including the tradition that is the Blackie’s Hot Dog Eating

Just like last year, the Fall Festival will offer a variety of favorite foods. See page 4 for a full list of vendors.

Contest and performances by local groups on both the Main and Second Stage, as well as the ever-growing arts-and-crafts and car shows. “We’re having a lot of music with all local bands,” Dill said. “We have Big Fat Combo, which is a local

band, as well as Bigfoot and the Cheshire Community Chorus.” Other musical acts include Imposter, the Nick Di Maria Group, and The Right-Offs. On the Second Stage will be talents such as Bergamo’s Martial Arts,

JC Karate Martial Arts Center, a show from the CHS cheerleaders, and the Cheshire Performing Arts Academy, to name just a few. On the east side of Bartlem Park near the Cheshire Community Pool See LASER, page 9

Paws Pet Resort Will Help Socialize Your Pup

I

f you have a new puppy, or are planning to get one, you may have heard about “socialization.” It has been established that pups are more likely to grow into stable, well-adjusted, confident adults if they experience a wide variety of new situations and environments at a very early age. Doggie Daycare provides the positive foundation your pup needs for developing proper social skills. Socialization is important to the overall well-being of your dog, enabling him to develop the skills to approach new experiences in a positive way, therefore reducing stress and building confidence. Socialization is especially important during a puppy’s critical developmental period from 8 to 16 weeks of age. Paws Pet Resort & Spa offers puppy socialization in small groups with properly matched puppy and adult dog playmates for a fun and positive experience under the close supervision of trained staff members. Pups who are well socialized are

typically happier, friendlier and more predictable. Under-socialized pups often grow to become fearful, shy, anxious, and sometimes even fear-aggressive adults. This can make them more difficult to handle for owners and pet professionals alike. Socialization should continue as a lifelong journey. Though the foundation for your dog’s behavior is laid during the first few months, responsible pet owners reinforce social skills and continually expose their dogs to new social experiences throughout their lives. Paws Pet Resort & Spa offers group play sessions seven days a week as part of our overnight lodging services and our Doggie Daycare program. Call us today at (203) 250-PAWS (7297), or stop by to visit our state-of-the-art facility located at 312 East Johnson Avenue in Cheshire, and ask about our free daycare promotion for new clients. JC Karate Celebrates 17 Years In Cheshire Students Earn Medals At 2016 World Championships

A

s the Olympics have brought our attention to the largest gathering of athletes from around the world, competing in events to win the coveted gold, silver, or bronze medals, a local organization has just recently gone through a similar global competition, competing against those from around the world to win medals. On the 15th and 16th of July, students from JC Karate gathered in Greensboro, North Carolina to compete at the World Tang Soo Do World Championships. Every two years, students training in Tang Soo

Do compete at this event in forms, weapons and sparring. This year, 36 Cheshire families trained for months on end to perfect techniques and memorize forms in preparing for the competition. Everyone had the same goal in mind: to win an impressive World Championship medal— but also to have fun and be happy to enjoy the experience. Tucker Michaud a brown belt at JC Karate, said, “I was nervous, but I knew that I would be proud with whatever I won.” Just like in the Olympics, the JC Karate students arrived in Greensboro to meet thousands of competitors ranging in ages and nationalities. Students from white belt to masters rank, from the United States, England, Argentina and 32 other

countries, gathered around the competition facility to make friends and create memories throughout the weekend-long event. Kristina Offerdahl, a second-degree black belt, said that “not only did I get to have a good time with my JC Karate family, but also with my extended World Tang Soo Do family.” The JC Karate Demo Team, a group of students who put together a theatrical story told through martial arts, also performed their Alice in Wonderlandthemed piece for a panel of judges and took away fourth place out of 11 teams from Mozambique, Africa as well as Alaska and other states in U.S. Master Jennifer Couture, owner of JC Karate, received the prestigious promotion of Fifth Degree Masters rank

in a ceremony alongside masters from other countries and before the World Tang Soo Do Grandmaster. The JC Karate students kicked, punched, and competed their way through the weekend to bring home a total of 23 medals (a list of the medal holders is below), although the best part of the competition was all the fun that was had and memories that were made. And some new friends were made, too. “I met this girl from Argentina named Daniella. She didn’t speak English so I attempted to speak to her in Spanish. We are friends now, and yesterday was her birthday, so I sent her a message saying ‘Feliz Cumpleanos’!” said Taylor McKinley, a second-degree black belt, as she excitedly talked about how much she enjoys meeting people from other countries during these events. JC Karate medals won for the USA: Lily Morenz, third place weapons; Alexis Shanok, second place sparring; Anne Morenz, third place sparring; Brian Schechter, second place weapons, third place forms, and third place sparring; Morgan Schechter, third place forms and third place weapons; Paige Schechter, second place weapons and third place forms; Darin Offerdahl, second place weapons; Jordan Shanok, third place weapons and third place sparring; Steven Rapillo, third place sparring; Taylor McKinley, second place sparring; and Brooke Smith, third place sparring; as well as Lisa, third place weapons, Eva, first place weapons and first place forms; Annabelle, third place forms and third place weapons; Alexander, third place forms; and Connor, third place sparring. Congratulations, JC Karate!

Laser Show An Exciting New Festival Attraction continued from page 2 will be the staple carnival hosted by the Kiwanis Club of Cheshire, which will offer rides, treats, and games for visitors to enjoy. Scattered about will be exhibitor booths and some vegetables and other homegrown foods offered at the farmers market. “I just think it’s an event that keeps growing,” Dill said. “We get great support from the community. It’s really a fun weekend.” New to this year’s Fall Festival is the nighttime laser show, courtesy of CT. Lasers. The show replaces

the annual fireworks display, which was canceled this year due to concern that the embers could damage the new Pool cover. “This is the first year for the laser show,” explained Dill. “We’re really excited … We think people will really like it.” Dill thanked the Town Council for providing financial support to the purchase of the laser show. He said that the Town has continuously showed its support in making the Fall Festival a townwide event. “It’s just a continuation of the support the Town of cheshire has given us over

the years to make the event what it is,” he said. There will be roughly 80 vendors for visitors to peruse, including Acme Music LLC, Calcagni Real Estate, the Cheshire Democratic Town Committee, Cheshire Historical Society, the Mari Hall Family Foundation, ShelfGenie, and Thomaston Feed, among many others. “I think the variety and diversity of it is appealing to people,” stated Dill.

“You can walk down one aisle and see crafters and then see businesses that are both locally and nationally known.” A sense of familiarity also draws visitors to the event, Dill continued. He estimated that upwards of 5,000 people stop by to enjoy the music and partake in the tradition that is the Fall Festival. “I just think it’s a great event for the community,” he said. “... It seems

to be growing and the enthusiasm that people have—I think we all really enjoy that.” The Fall Festival will begin on Friday from 5 to 9 p.m. On Saturday, the event will kickoff with the craft show at 10 a.m. and continue until 9 p.m. The laser show is expected to begin shortly after 8 p.m., according to Dill. We can wash vinyl, aluminum, clapboard, stucco, cedar, log cabins, etc. Interior and exterior Gutter Cleaning removes debris from gutters and ensures that downspouts work properly. What sets us apart from other companies is our Deck Restoration. PAL’S can repair rotted wood, prepare decks for sealing, and seal decks. Most companies would have to subcontract a carpenter, washer, and paint crew. PAL’S does it all! Too many people spend countless hours and money building beautiful wood decks, only to watch them deteriorate because the wood is unprotected from weather. Rain, melting snow, and morning dew are quickly absorbed by unprotected wood, causing it to soften and swell. The sun’s heat causes drying which makes the wood shrink. Christine Ohlman Comes Home To Headline Festival’s Friday Night Kick-Off

R

ock n’ soul will rule the night on Friday, Sept. 9, at 7:30 p.m., when Cheshire’s native daughter, Christine Ohlman, the flashy, gritty platinum-blonde “Beehive Queen,” who is the longtime vocalist with NBC’s Saturday Night Live Band, brings Christine Ohlman & Rebel Montez to the Cheshire Fall Festival at Bartlem Park for the firstever Friday-night kick-off for the event. The show will spotlight songs from her six CDs, including “The Deep End,” a passionate collection that garnered five end-of-year national Top Ten mentions (Rolling Stone editor emeritus Dave Marsh said,”There are so many ‘wow’ moments,” and esteemed journalist Peter Guralnick weighed in with, “Tough, tender, thoughtful and sassy; R-EA-L, as Sam Phillips was wont to say”) and 2016’s upcoming “The Grown-Up Thing.” Ohlman is fresh from vocal contributions on episodes of the HBO Martin Scorcese series “VINYL” (with a track on the twoCD series soundtrack and a duet with Elvis Costello); collaborations with Graham Nash and Steve Miller; sold-out appearances at both the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival’s 2016 David Bowie tribute and the WC Handy Festival in Muscle Shoals (as the Grand Marshall, she famously rode in Sam Phillips’ “often-riddenin-by-Elvis” baby-blue Cadillac); and The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. Her star turn with Fallon at the SNL40 Anniversary Post-Show Concert (her voice graced the telecast itself) included a romp with The B-52s and Fallon as her backup vocalists, and verse-

trading with Elvis Costello, among others. Ohlman, who was born in the Bronx but grew up in Cheshire, attending Norton Elementary and Dodd Jr. High Schools, has fond summertime hometownstyle Cheshire memories. “I was in an amazing allstudent drama group called The Blackfriars with the late Ron Paolillo,” she reminisces. “We were given carte blanche to stage our summer productions at the high school. It was joyous. My first band, too, (The Wrongh Black Bag) was formed with my brother Vic Steffens together with neighbors from our Brooksvale neighborhood and his Cheshire Academy schoolmates. Our first show ever was at the Youth Center! I just cannot wait to return to Cheshire for a full-out festival performance.” Ohlman was chosen #1 Female Americana vocalist in TheAlternateRoot.com’s international readers’ pol and the “Number-One

Secret Weapon in America’s gal-singin’ sweepstakes” by the All-Music Guide. She will be on stage with Massachusetts guitar legend Cliff Goodwin (acclaimed for his work with Joe Cocker and Robert Palmer), Larry Donahue (drums) and Michael Colbath (bass), serving up a night of lovedrenched stories in “contemporary rock R n’ B” style. Her shows are legendary for their powerful musicianship and raw emotion. Ohlman has had a long, ongoing tenure at ”Saturday Night Live“and appeared on both the SNL 25th Anniversary and recent 40th Anniversary telecasts. She calls SNL40 a “pure delight,” stating, “So many past cast members and members of the SNL Band were there. It was so wonderful to see everyone and to see the brilliant and historic way

Cheshire’s own “Beehive Queen” Christine Ohlman & Rebel Montez will headline the Friday night kick-off of the 2016 Cheshire Fall Festival at Bartlem Park. Showtime is 7:30 p.m. they constructed the show itself.” One critic wrote, “From the mile-high beehive hairdo to the textbook rock n’ roll radio lungs, Christine Ohlman reminds you of what used to be great about rock before it began to think too much. Watching her wind between roots rock and blues and never lose control of the wheel was a thrilling, reassuring sight.”

“I’ve come here tonight to set your souls on fire,” The Beehive Queen has been known to tell her audiences. And she will at Bartlem Park on Friday, Sept. 9, at 7:30 p.m. Find out more about Christine Ohlman at www. christineohlman.net. Great Clips Hair Salon Now Open In Big Y Plaza

S

outh Main Street in Cheshire is adding another small business to its list of options for local residents. Great Clips, a familyfocused haircutting shop is now open in the Big Y plaza at 1035 South Main St. Great Clips is a franchised national hair salon brand with almost 4,000 locations across the U.S. and Canada. As a franchise, the Great Clips in Cheshire will be locally owned and operated by husband-and-wife team Mike and Ashleigh McDonald. Great Clips focuses on providing quality haircuts as conveniently as possible for customers. Great Clips of Cheshire is sponsoring a girls’ soccer team in this year’s Cheshire Soccer Club, and the salon plans to do fundraising on behalf of various nonprofits and civic organizations around Cheshire.

Great Clips distinguishes itself from competitiors with its extended hours for customers—open seven days a week, including evenings—and its focus on value in haircuts. Great Clips prices are $16 for adults, and $13 for children and seniors. The salon offers online check-in to let customers skip waiting lines—an appointment is never required to get your haircut. Some of the fancier services such as perms and hair coloring that high-end salons offer may not be available, because the focus at Great Clips is great haircuts. According to Ashleigh MacDonald, “We really want to be a part of the Cheshire community and show men, women, and whole families the dedication we bring to providing a convenient, comfortable, highquality haircut experience.”

Hours are from 6 p.m. to closing on Friday, and from 10 a.m. to closing on Saturday. Rain date is Sunday, Sept. 11. The carnival rides are provided by Marenna Amusements, LLC. The carnival has a variety of family rides for young and old, and is one of the club’s major fundraising events each year. The money raised by the Kiwanis Club goes back into the community to support many youth-oriented activities, such as youth sports teams, leadership training programs, reading programs, Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops, an annual bike safety program, and $3,000 in scholarships for graduating high school students pursuing higher education. This community service organization also supports many senior citizen activities. Kiwanis International celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2015. The community service organization was formed in 1915 in Detroit, Michigan and today has clubs with volunteer members across the globe who are dedicated to carrying out the organization’s primary goal of “serving the children of the world.” The local Kiwanis Club of Cheshire invites you to join and take part in the fun and rewarding experience of volunteer service to your Cheshire community. Giving back, paying forward, serving our fellow citizens— however it is expressed—is a most notable aspect of everyone’s journey through life. On Saturday, the carnival will be held in conjunction with the annual Cheshire Festival & Marketplace, sponsored by the Town of Cheshire and Cheshire Chamber of Commerce, at Bartlem Recreation Area.
