ello everyone! My name is Shangda, and before I start … thank you to Durga for throwing me under the bus while still making your speech longer than mine. Anyways, as your valedictorian, I am here to celebrate all of your achievements by giving you another few minutes of wisdom to sleep through. But first, I would like to deliver a few shoutouts.

Shatter a couple of frontiers. Leave behind a couple of ideas. Never stop moving. Never stop innovating.” None of us would be here today without the support of our teachers and administrators, so thank you guys so much for having no problem with taking bribes. But really, though, we know our teachers aren’t in it for the money, because they’re all too smart to be here. No, they're here because of their love for education and their desire to see all of us grow into who we are today, and I think all of them deserve our utmost respect. And as for our parents, I ap-

cantly more than before. I thank you once again for your continued support for your local broke Millennials. And to my fellow graduates, congratulations once again!. You’re one valedictory address

away from receiving your diplomas, so allow me to tell you about some perks of graduating. I’ve been told that, as a high school graduate, you can give condescending advice to anyone who hasn’t gotten a diploma yet.

I believe I’m one of the first to get one so, clearly, I’m qualified to lecture you. I think I’m supposed to say to “follow your dreams” or something, but my advice? Run while you can. Otherwise, before you know it, we’ll all be boring adults living in a rich suburban bubble and we might even have kids … bleh. Today, we’re finishing a chapter in our lives, so I do want to say something other than terrible jokes. So here it is—don’t get too comfortable. Complacency is our worst enemy. Remember Goldilocks? Her search for what she thought was just right didn’t end up so well for her. Now, I don’t know about any of you, but I’m not really interested in getting chased by a family of bears anytime soon. So don't settle. Shatter a couple of frontiers. Leave behind a couple of ideas. Never stop moving. Never stop innovating. And to close out my speech, an obligatory cliché from Ellen—“Follow your passion, stay true to yourself, never follow someone else’s path … unless you’re in the woods and you're lost (or, for that matter, being chased by bears) and you see a path, then by all means, you should follow that.” Thank you.

ello! Thank you to everyone here today who’s been a part of the success of our graduating class. You’re the reason we’ve been able to go as far as we have. And a huge “thank you” to the Cheshire High School faculty and adminstration for your relentless support. I like metaphors, and I also like sandwiches. If you have ever tried to take a bite out of a towering, messy sandwich, trying your best to keep all the different parts from falling out while also trying to savor each bite, then you know exactly what high school is. There’s so many experiences to enjoy and take part in, but sometimes it can be hard to manage them all. And I mean that in the best way possible. So if high school was a sand-

For me, these past four years have been filled with the best kind of people. I really couldn't have gotten much luckier.” wich, it would be pretty fair to say that the actual meat would be everything we’ve learned at Cheshire High, in terms of academics. We don’t usually eat a sandwich for the lettuce or bread or mustard. The primary goal is walking away from school with a greater sense of the little pockets of information this world has to offer. But the reason why one genius of a man decided to put meat between two pieces of bread and then add things like tomato and lettuce and what not—I’m not really sure how the first sandwich actually came to be, so this is a solid guess—anyway the reason is that he thought that meat shouldn't have to stand alone. It’s just way more fun when there's a bunch of other ingredients that you get to eat at the same time. And also,

nobody wants to see someone just sitting around eating slabs of meat with their hands. That’s weird. And I’m sorry to all the vegetarians out there; I hope this metaphor finds you well. Days like graduation, awards ceremonies, the big fancy days, are just part of the bread that holds the whole sum of our experiences together. But if I had to think about the good stuff in the middle—the cheese and relish and onion— it all would have to do with the people that I’ve been around during these four years. That’s what makes the sandwich a really good sandwich—the talking in between classes, the goofing around, the getting to know people just because they sat near you or needed a highlighter. The cool thing is that, depending on who we lent highlighters to, who we were forced to spend this defined amount of time with, the cheese and lettuce and what not are different for all of us. For me, it’s been listening to Meghan Diamond talk about Kayne West not being a Gov

famous. It’s been watching people like Adam Majeski and Hannah Hackett talk about Best Buddies, and hearing Sydney Korman and Owen Kennelly talk about politics. It has been sitting down and listening to a few of the thousands of stories that Captain is ready and willing to tell, or watching Mr. Bertenshaw soulfully dance to Pink before a big chem test, and never really knowing how to feel about it. It’s been listening to Mr. Ket talk about Jamaica, or getting this big smile from Alaina Cappasso each and every time I’ve passed her in the hallways. It’s been understanding the power behind Jake Goldstein’s silence, and the emotion he communicates with only his eyes. It's been trying to touch LaRae Maes-Hardy’s hair for the thrill of it, getting physically threatened, and not wanting it any other way. Or getting a nod from Mr. Lee and feeling a new sense of confidence about the day ahead. Commencement Speech

Torok Recalls Educational Journey Taken With Classmates

G

ood evening to Mr. Detrick, Mr. Solan, teachers, and my fellow CHS graduates. Today is the first day of the rest of our lives. That might be the most famous cliché—you’ve heard it a million times, and maybe you never stopped to think about what it actually means. When I really thought about this cliché, I discovered exactly how much I disagree with it. Today isn’t the first day. We had our first day already. Don’t you remember all of the princess backpacks, the superhero lunch boxes, those lightup sneakers that, at one point, we all thought made us the coolest kids on the playground? Don’t you remember when school supply shopping meant the 64 pack of crayons and a couple of glue sticks? Each of our stories started the second we climbed onto that big yellow bus and stumbled into a classroom for the very first time. Since that day, the real first day, we’ve learned how to read and write and calculate angle degrees, and speak foreign languages. We have stuffed out minds full of so many facts and skills and lessons, and maybe at some point we wondered why. We wondered, why do I need to know how to solve for “X” or how to say “animal skins” in French? It’s les peaux de betes, by the way. We ask, what is the point of learning all of these things I’ll never need to know outside of the classroom? Let today be the day we realize that we’ve been learning something much greater and much more significant all along. Sure, we went to class and learned all of the subjects and concepts that we were supposed to. During these last four years, we’ve learned about derivatives and sound waves and MLA citations, but we’ve also learned how to love, how to listen, how to take criticism, how to rise above challenges. We’ve learned how to be kind, how to fail, how to forgive, how to break, and how to build ourselves back up again afterwards. In these last four years, we have learned how to frame our humanity in the much grander context of society. We have

learned how to take the person that we are and develop ourselves into the person that we dream of being.

So take what you've learned and allow it to carry you forward. Choose a path and run as fast and as far as you can.”

None of us went through high school perfectly. We aren’t standing here today because we’re perfect people or because we did all of the right things all of the time. We are here today because we made mistakes. We are here because we put ourselves out there and made ourselves vulnerable to the unknown. We are here because, when we failed, we stood up, brushed the dirt off our knees, and tried again. There is not a textbook in the world that contains the lessons we have learned from each other here in this school. The greatest lessons were taught to us by time, experience, and the people that we love. Graduation isn’t just a celebration of everything that we’ve accomplished. It’s a promise, a promise that we make to everything who loved us and rooted for us and helped us get to where we are. By accepting that diploma and walking across this stage, we are promising tomorrow. We promise that today is not the last time we fight for our futures, not the last time we rage against ignorance, or believe in dreams we have not yet realized. We promise to build upon the foundation we’ve created here, and to construct a legacy for ourselves, one that we can be proud of. Each of us is lucky enough to be able to choose our next step, whether it be college, the military, or a career. No matter what we choose, we promise to give it 110 percent, because that’s just what Cheshire High School students do. It’s who we are. As nice as it would be to take full credit for getting ourselves to this point, we all know that simply isn’t the case. Each of our lives has been touched, shaped, or influenced in some way. Each of us had someone who believe in

our potential. So make sure you take a moment to thank the people in your life for everything they've contributed to your success. Thank your teachers for everything they’ve done to ensure that you leave here today with a strong, well-rounded education. Thank your family for their endless support and for being your biggest cheerleaders. Thank your parents for, well, everything. And finally, don’t forget to thank the young men and women sitting around you this very second. Take a look around. These people have been your friends, classmates, and teammates for the last 14 years. We’ve shared our childhoods with each other. We’ve watched each other transform from baby-faced children into ambitious and capable young adults. Side by side, we learned how to ride bikes, we shot our first baskets or performed our first dance recitals. We attended our first school dance, we got our driver's licenses and applied to college. We experienced all of the unique facets of our youth together. It makes me proud to see the mature and compassionate individuals you have all become over the years. I knew most of you before I knew how to tie my shoes, and it has been a pleasure to grow up with you. So, to conclude, today is most definitely not the first day. But it is certainly not the last, either. So take what you’ve learned and allow it to carry you forward. Choose a path and run as fast and as far as you can. If you hit a dead end, change directions and try again. Be fearless, but be humble. Face your tomorrows with love in your heart and courage in your eyes, and remember that the only failure that exists is the failure to try. Thank you and congratulations to the Class of 2016.

For me, these past four years have been filled with the best kinds of people. I really couldn’t have gotten much luckier.
