A number of reasons to celebrate

This week ONLINE

MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Dear Readers, TODAY marks the end of another year for the Hillcrest Fever, and as the festivities kick off for this season, let us reflect on moments that touched our lives and the community this past year. 2014 has been marked by persistent challenges in our economy with price inflations (food, electricity, fuel, etc.). Through the difficult times, our readers have once again proven that we are, without a doubt, among the most resilient and strong-willed. We have weathered all the storms that came our way and have demonstrated that we can be a community to be proud of - from our disabled horse rider achieving his goals to a local woman beating breast cancer and becoming an inspiration to others - our community stands together proud! We are confident that 2015 will be better than ever. We, at The Hillcrest Fever, have faced our

We will continue to be open and honest with our readers and we assure you that the new year will be one never to be forgotten. Our hearts go out to those who lost loved ones this year and those experiencing difficulties of all types this holiday season. Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World at the weekend and now features in a long list of remarka ble women who continue to make a difference to the countries they live in and the world. South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy. It’s been a year since his death and many ques tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’. Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some times comes to the fore. Mock budget set for iLembe JYOTHI LALDAS

A

MOCK budget will be used as a monitoring tool to ensure that the iLembe District’s budget remains credible under the cash flow constraints the municipality is currently experiencing. This was revealed to council for noting at a special meeting last week. After council tabled and approved the annual budget for 2016/2017, the Provincial Treasury Office assessed iLembe’s annual budget for credibility and funding and requested a meeting with the municipality to discuss a way forward. The preparation of a mock budget is one of the resolutions taken during a meeting with the Treasury office. Mayor of iLembe District Municipality Sduduzo Gumede, the chairperson of the Finance Portfolio Committee councillor Sandeep Oudhram, the municipal manager Nonhlanhla Gamede and management were all part of the important meeting. “This mock budget will assist us in formulating the adjustment budget which will be tabled in February next year as per the requirements of the Municipal Finances Management Act,” said the mayor.

The district municipality is currently fully implementing austerity measures – which is also another resolution of the meeting with province, he added. “We indicated to Treasury that as part of ensuring that cash flow challenges do not persist we will fully implement the measures. This will not be impossible for us, as we have already started partly implementing austerity measures,” said Gumede. The council of iLembe has also adopted the policy on austerity measures. Some of the notable measures the municipality has implemented include paying Project Management Unit employee related costs out of the Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG) instead of the operational budget. “We have reviewed contracts with external service providers and lessened dependency on service providers by making use of internal resources. The cost saving based on the project management unit business plan is R4.97 million based on the 2015/2016 financial year and the budgeted cost saving for 2016/17 financial year is R9.3 million,” said Gumede. The mayor said, however, that the effects of the austerity measures will take some time to bear fruit, stating

that decent savings had been made to date on printing costs alone. “We have consolidated and improved on our printing including contracting a single service provider for the supply and maintenance of printing, copying and faxing equipment at a monthly fixed cost of R133 501.40 compared to a monthly averaged cost of R332 469.91 that was previously spent. This is a saving of R2.4 million a year.” Another cost cutting measure used to save council money is the distribution of meeting agendas for councillors and officials via an electronic system. “Previously agendas were often distributed to councillors during weekends which meant that a driver assigned with this task claimed overtime. Distribution of agendas electronically means less printing and a reduction on the purchase of printing paper,” said the mayor. “The municipality continues with its vigorous efforts in exploring further cost cutting measures focusing on transport costs, overtime and travel claims. “We have initiated a financial turnaround strategy and developed a comprehensive financial recovery plan in support of the strategy which will fo-

MAKHOSANDILE ZULU

A

S Grade 12 pupils wrote their final examinations last Friday, a local non-profit organisation, Izwi Lothando Home and Communitybased Services, sought to steer this year’s matriculants away from the norm of tearing up their school uniforms or using permanent markers to write farewell messages on them as a way of celebrating their final exams. The organisation approached Tshelenkosi High School pupils and urged them to donate their school uniforms after they had written their final examination rather than adhering to the popular practice of tearing it up or

writing farewell messages on it. “We want to promote a culture of giving and the spirit of Ubuntu among school pupils. There are many school pupils who are in lower grades who need these uniforms. As an organisation, we also wish to promote a different way of celebrating their final exams rather the norm of partying,” the organisation's founder Phila Zulu said. School principal Nosipho Mpanza said she was surprised by the pupils’ actions which she said were a sign of maturity and that she felt proud by this

generous deed. “I was surprised by our pupils because this action showed that they see the importance of giving back to those less fortunate than themselves. As a school, we would also like to thank Phila for encouraging and assisting the

pupils in accomplishing what they set out to do,” Mpanza said. She said such an act goes a long way in assisting those less privileged. She made an example about pupils who change schools due to circumstances beyond their control but end

up in a predicament as they cannot afford the uniform of their new school. “This act of kindness makes those pupils who cannot afford the new uniforms feel welcomed in the new school and this is important for their self-esteem that is why we are so proud of our pupils for doing this,” Mpanza. She said 89 matric pupils had pledged to donate their school uniforms and that she hopes next year more pupils will pledge to do the same. She said some of the recipients had pledged to pay it forward once they reach their final year of schooling. A mother of one the recipients, Makhosi Mweli, whose son will be in Grade 8 in the school in 2017, said she is very grateful for the donation as she was worried about what she would do to ensure that her son, Nhlakanipho, has the uniform. “God bless all the pupils who donated their uniforms. Education is very important that is why I am grateful for this because now my son can continue with his schooling,” Mweli said. The Lindelani based mother of three who depends on a social grant said she urged her own son to take good care of the uniform so that he too could hand it over to someone who needs it.

Child Welfare SA: KwaDukuza talks 16 Days of Activism JYOTHI LALDAS IMAGINE if, for 16 days, there was no rape and no child abuse. The 16 Days of Activism for No violence against Women and Children cam paign challenges South Africans to declare a truce on violence against women and children and ultimately make it a permanent one. This campaign runs from 25 November to 10 December. The theme is Count me in: Together moving a nonviolent South Africa forward. While the campaign runs for only 16 days each year, its objectives are reinforced by a yearlong programme and a national plan combat abuse. South Africa is still home to high levels of violence against its women and children, despite a worldrenowned Constitution and a legislative overhaul that safeguards women’s and children’s rights. The government, business, civil society organisations, faith based organisations and the media are all participating in the drive to increase awareness of the negative impact of violence and abuse on women and children. The campaign also aims to: * Challenge the perpetrators of violence to change their behav iour. * Involve men in helping to eradicate violence. * Provide survivors with information on services and organisations that can help lessen the impact of violence in their lives. To commemorate 16 Days of Activism Child Welfare SA: KwaDuku za will embark on the following programmes to educate the commu

nity to prevent violence against women and children. As part of the society’s programme to commemorate 16 Days of No Violence Against Women and Children, a workshop was held on the different acts for all social workers. The workshop was conducted by Advocate Ronita Lutchman from the KwaDukuza Department of Justice the workshop focused on the Sexual Offence Act, Older Person’s Act the Children’s Act and the Child Justice Act. Social workers were equipped with knowledge on these acts to enable them to render more effective services to the community. The society commenced with activities to commemorate 16 Days of Activism Against Child and Women Abuse last week with a child abuse prevention programme at a local school for both children and parents. A team of five social workers headed by social worker Mr N. Bhen gu, conducted the programme. The aim of the programme was to educate parents and pupils on child abuse and the resources available in the community to deal with victims of child abuse and neglect. The parenting programme was aimed at equipping parents with the necessary skills to care adequately for children. Films on child abuse and domestic violence During 16 Days of Activism, movies on child abuse and domestic violence will be shown to clients at the office to educate them on child abuse and domestic violence prevention. Awareness programmes on child abuse and domestic violence Awareness programmes will be held in areas with high incidence of child abuse and domestic violence. Pamphlets outlining details on child abuse, do mestic violence and the services rendered by the socie ty will be distributed in the community. Ward councillors, community workers and volun teers will be approached to assist. The aim of the awareness programme is to reduce the high rate of child abuse and domestic violence in the identified areas and to educate women and chil Jesus is the Reason for the Season dren on their rights. Awareness talks on women abuse will be conduct ed by social workers for welfare beneficiaries. The SAPS and court personnel will be included to give educational talks on crime prevention to clients.

>> Chase after stolen vehicle leads to success for local police MAKHOSANDILE ZULU

T

HE swift reaction of police units along with a security company led to the arrest of six suspects who were allegedly in possession of a stolen vehicle. This is according to KwaZulu-Natal SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane. He said the suspects were arrested near the Blythedale off-ramp and they are expected to appear in the KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court soon facing charges of being in possession of property suspected to be stolen. “On 24 November 2016, the Durban K9 Unit and Durban Flying Squad received information about a Toyota double cab bakkie which was stolen in the Berea area, Durban. The said vehicle was spotted and the members gave chase towards the North Coast on the N2 freeway. Back-up was called and KwaDukuza Task Team and a security company joined the chase and the vehicle was intercepted near the Blythedale off-ramp, KwaDukuza. Six suspects, aged between 30 and 35, were arrested and the vehicle was also recovered,” Zwane said.

He said it is believed that the owner parked his vehicle in the Berea area, but he returned to where he had parked his car he noticed that his vehicle was not there. Zwane said the description of the stolen vehicle was cir-

culated and police began tracing it and that the victim was also assisting during the chase. KwaZulu-Natal acting provincial commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa praised the members for their

swift reaction that led to the arrest of the suspects. “The arrested suspects will be profiled to establish if they are not wanted for any other crimes in the province. The vehicle was recovered a few hours after it was stolen which shows the commitment by the team while performing their duties,” he said.

In a separate incident, a 44-yearold man was arrested last Tuesday in Hlomendlini, New Ark, for being in possession of an illegal firearm. “A case of possession of an unlicensed firearm is being investigated by Newark SAPS. The members acted on intelligence-driven information where a 44-year-old man was found in possession of a 9mm pistol with a live round of ammunition while at his house in Hlomendlini area. He appeared in court last Wednesday,” Zwane said. Newark SAPS spokesperson, Malusi Ngubane said the suspect is in custody as the case has been remanded for next month.

WEEKLY

You could save a life A BLOOD transfusion can be a life saving treatment for patients with cancer, pa tients undergoing surgery, children with se vere anaemia, women who have complica tions with their pregnancy, and accident victims. If you’re still in two minds about wheth er you should donate blood, consider that doing so not only helps others, you are doing something for your health. How much and how often? By law, you may only donate about

480ml of blood every 56 days, to ensure that you’ve had enough time to replenish the red cells from your last donation. The body replaces all of its lost blood volume within 48 hours after donating blood; the replenishment of red blood cells takes a little more time, about four to eight weeks worth. Though the waiting period may be a bit long, the altruistic feeling of donating blood every two to three months can often be re ward enough to make the wait and dona tion worthwhile. Additionally, the positive feelings asso ciated with blood donation have been shown to improve both emotional and physical health. When donating blood, you are removing 225 to 250mg of iron from your body; there fore reducing your risks of health complica tions. In fact, a fourandahalfyear study found that those who donated blood bian nually had reduced their risk of cancer and

mortality compared to those who didn’t, simply because of decreased iron levels. Blood donation has also been found to help those wishing to lose weight. A person who donates blood burns about 650 calo ries with every pint donated, as the body has to work to replenish itself. Though there are many benefits to do nating blood just one time, the people who benefit most from blood donations are reg ular donors. According to a study published in the Journal of American Medical Association, researchers found that those between the ages of 43 and 61 had fewer heart attacks and strokes when they had donated blood every six months. Another study done by the MillerKey stone Blood Center in the US found that consistent blood donation is associated with lower risks of cancer diagnosis; risk lev els of being diagnosed with any type of can cer decreased in correlation with how often donors donated blood.Â

R

ESEARCH suggests more than 11 500 000 stokvel members in South Africa have an estimated R49 billion in savings. While traditionally stokvels – typically informal savings vehicles consisting of members’ pooled contributions – have been used for short-term savings such as groceries or school fees, evidence suggests that many stokvels are now becoming more formal, upmarket saving schemes. “There are two things driving this trend: people who can’t afford monthly investment minimums, yet want to earn long-term return on their savings, are doing so through a stokvel that invests. Secondly, stokvels who have saved up a considerable lump sum decide to invest as a group in order to earn higher returns,” explains Thandi Ngwane, head of strategic markets at Allan Gray. She says bank accounts are suitable for stokvels with short-term objectives. But once the objectives take a longerterm focus - between three and five years - stokvels should consider looking for alternatives.

“If a stokvel wants to achieve real growth that beats the eroding effect of inflation, the cash that a stokvel puts away each month must grow by at least the inflation rate. For example, if your bank offers you an interest rate of 5%, this may sound attractive. But, if inflation is higher than 5%, your money will be losing value,” says Ngwane. She says a unit trust is a great option for stokvels that have a long-term savings objective, as the investment management decisions are left to qualified professionals. “Unit trusts offer an affordable way to invest in a wide variety of investments. You would need a large amount of money to buy the same range of investments yourself. The investment manager decides which companies, stocks or shares to invest in and the unit trust’s returns are based on these underlying investments. There are different types of unit trusts, depending on how long you want to invest, and how much money you want to earn.” Ngwane’s five key reasons to consider unit trusts: Access to experts You don’t have to make all the investment decisions on your own. Skilled investment managers will make investment decisions on your behalf. Your investment is safe If you have money invested in a unit trust you are invested in a protected fund and not in the financial institution itself, so if anything goes wrong with the investment management company your money is safe from the company’s creditors. Better longterm returns than having all the money in cash Unit trusts have the ability to invest your money in different underlying investments, meaning that if one investment isn’t doing well you have the potential to earn return from another. In addition, if your stokvel is able to remain invested for the length of time that matches the unit trust’s stated mandate, you have a greater opportunity to benefit from compound interest and see better investment returns than if you kept your savings in cash.

You can access your investment if you need to In the event that a member needs to exit the stokvel, or an emergency payment needs to be made, you would have access to your investment. There are no lengthy notice periods that apply. Transparent reporting You can keep track of your investment by accessing your stokvel’s investment statement online, making the reporting process at stokvel meetings more transparent. In addition, information about the unit trust your stokvel is invested in is available on a fact sheet, which most investment managers make available via their websites. This will help you track that the stokvels investment objectives remain in line with those of the unit trust you’re invested in. She goes on to explain that there are many unit trusts available and stokvels need to consider what future need or project they are investing for and how long they wish to stay invested. This is often a useful guide in determining the type of unit trust that may suit the stokvel’s investment objective. “If your stokvel is willing to invest for at least five years and the members can stomach risk, then buying an equityonly unit trust is an option. “However, if your members don’t have such an appetite for risk, then a balanced or stable unit trust, which can invest in a wide range of underlying investments, may be more suitable,” she says. To ensure that decisions made by the stokvel are in the best interests of all members, Ngwane suggests adding at least three signatories to any investment account, which can consist of a chairperson, treasurer and secretary. “If in doubt, you can talk to a good independent financial adviser who can best assist you in finding out whether your stokvel is ready to invest,” concludes Ngwane. – Fin24. CATARACT is the leading cause of reversible blindness. Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness. World Sight Awareness Month is meant to bring global attention to blindness and visual impairment. 285 million people worldwide live with low vision and blindness. 90% of these people live in low income communities and countries, yet 80% of visual impairment is avoidable. Restoration of sight is one of the most cost effective interventions in health care. An estimated 19 million children are visually impaired. 65% of all visually impaired individuals are more than 50 years old. Therefore visual impairment affects those sectors of our society that are the most vulnerable, i.e. the elderly, robbing them of their independence and dignity. It is in keeping with this ethos that Tongaat Eye Centre is dedicated to creating awareness on a yearly basis by getting involved with such outreach programmes. Dr Naidoo would like to thank KZN Day Clinic and staff for their hospitality and amazing patient care during the pro bono cataract surgeries for two deserving individuals last month. - Supplied.

T

HE term “state capture” is deceptive. The mystique and melodrama camouflage the true nature of the activity infesting the highest echelons of government. What is happening is straightforward political corruption, which is defined as the use of powers by government officials for illegitimate private gain or illegal acts by an office holder related to their official duties, involving the trading of influence. If there was any doubt before about how the Gupta family has used their

elled to Zurich, Switzerland, for negotiations between Glencore and Guptaowned Tegeta. Zuma’s son Duduzane is also a shareholder in the company. “If Minister Zwane travelled in his official capacity to support Tegeta’s bid to buy the mine his conduct would give Tegeta an unfair advantage over other interested buyers. Further, it is potentially unlawful for the minister to use his official position of authority to unfairly and unduly influence a contract for a friend or in this instance his boss’s son at the expense of the state,” the public protector’s report said. “This scenario would be further complicated if his actions were sanctioned by the president.” These allegations are simply the tip

of the iceberg in terms of the activities involving the Guptas. Zuma remained defensive in Parliament this week about his failure to provide Madonsela with answers to her questions about his relationship with the Guptas and his knowledge of all these activities. The transcript of Madonsela’s interview with Zuma is most insightful about how the president and his legal advisers used all means possible to avoid answering her questions. Madonsela wanted to know, among other things, the reasons why Nene was fired, whether Zuma did instruct former government spokesperson Themba Maseko to help the Guptas, and whether the president was at the Gupta compound when they offered

OPINION

WEEKLY

Plain old corruption relationship with President Jacob Zuma and members of his Cabinet, the State of Capture report by former public protector Thuli Madonsela presented an overview of how the integrity of the state is being compromised. The report shows that Co-operative Governance Minister Des van Rooyen visited Saxonwold, where the Gupta compound is located, seven times prior to his appointment as Finance minister last December. Van Rooyen, who tried to block the release of the report, has not provided an explanation of what he was doing there, including on the day before Zuma fired the former Finance minister, Nhlanhla Nene, and appointed him. It would appear that there was quite a lot of activity during Van Rooyen’s four-day stint as Finance minister. The Sunday Times reported that his advisers allegedly leaked a confidential government document to associates of the Guptas during that period. The public protector’s report showed that Mineral Resources Minister Mosebenzi Zwane was involved in business negotiations on behalf of the Guptas. It confirmed that Zwane trav-

former ANC MP Vytjie Mentor a ministerial position. Zuma insisted he was not in the position to respond. When Madonsela asked Zuma about the Guptas’ alleged offer to promote Deputy Finance Minister Mcebisi Jonas, his response was perplexing. “I mean when the Jonas thing came I did not know I will ever have to answer any questions, because it had nothing to do with me, because people meeting and talking about whatever they talk about and I would have thought the matters get to those people, deal with them and the matter is over, but if I have got to answer the question, I have to have given it a good thought, what does this mean?” Zuma said, according to the transcript. It is obvious, including from his performance in the National Assembly this week, that the president learnt nothing from the Nkandla fiasco and does not take seriously his constitutional obligation to be accountable. This farce has gone on long enough. We should stop seeing state capture as a blurry phenomenon. Political corruption needs to be properly investigated and whoever has compromised the integrity of the state needs to be prosecuted. • Ranjeni Munusamy is a political journal ist and commentator for the Daily Maver ick. ranjeni.munusamy@gmail.com

Dangerous perceptions I NOTICE with amusement the president’s and Julius Malema’s utterances regarding their bold attitudes towards jail time. It must be remembered that a jail such as Robben Island was no real jail, but rather a place of incarceration, confinement of comrades of the ANC, whom, through an unjust apartheid regime, found themselves in this and other institutions for lengthy periods. No serious criminals, murderers, etc, just ordinary men and women

like everyone else. Another example were the Boer prisoners of war (1899-1902), who were sent to St Helena. Again, no real jail with murderous criminals, etc, but prisoners none the less. Struggle veterans, confusing historic jail time with real-life jail today, could find this perception detrimental to their health. Don’t tempt fate. ANTHONY TIMMS

Jayaram Pillay (Jay) Born: 22/03/1963 Called to Rest: 16/11/2016 We have lost what heaven has gained, One of the best fathers this earth had ever contained, Deep in our hearts a memory is kept, Of the father we loved and never forget. The tears of excess can’t be wiped away, But the tears of the heart forever stay. Our deepest wish would be today to have you back the same sweet way. Your smile will always be remembered. You never said goodbye, you were gone before we knew it and only God knew why. If love alone could have saved you, you would never had died. In life we loved you dearly, in death we love you still. Time will heal the unbearable magnitude of our loss but precious memories will ease it. A million words could never express our love and sorrow.

You and your family are kindly invited to attend the 15 and 16 Day Memorial Ceremony of the late Jayaram Pillay (Jay) Date: Wednesday, 30 November 2016 and Thursday, 01 December 2016 Time: 5pm Venue: 17 Libra Drive, Glenhills Family and friends are kindly requested to please accept this as a personal invite. Sadly missed by Wife-Mala, Daughter-Precina, Son-Kyle, 3 Sisters, 1 Brother and a host of family and friends.

A GROUP of ardent Duguza Golf Club patrons have come together to orga nise a reunion of all the faithful mem bers of the Duguza Golf Club. The club was a hub of activity over a long period and many friendships and camaraderie was fostered during this period. Sadly, the club had to close its doors some 12 years ago, forcing the members to ply their trade in other areas. However, the friendship and cama raderie amongst the members still ex isted as communication between these close friends continued through the social media. It became impera tively clear that the days of the club were sorely missed and suggestions were that a reunion be organised so members could get together to remi

niscence. Numerous meetings were held by the organising committee and the date of the weekend of 10/11 December was decided and the committee has been busy getting the final details together. A final meeting of all members who are enthusiastic to join the reunion will be held this Thursday (tomorrow), 1 De cember at 6pm at Stanger Secondary. The committee will outline the final details and attendance at the meeting is crucial as this will confirm your at tendance to the reunion. Those who are unable to attend the meeting but are enthusiastic to be at the reunion can contact members of the organising committee by 1 December. The organising committee amongst others are Patrick Reddy (076 901 3367), Richard Reddy (078 379 7096), Anil Singh (078 224 6023) or you can contact Dan Moodley, Ronnie Kisten or Siven Naidoo.

Maintain ing a clean, ade quate supply of oil within the engine is abso lutely critical for the long term life of your vehicle.

HERE are times when you really don't have PHOTO: SOURCED to care much about a car or car mainte nance. On the other hand, you have the car parked in your driveway. You know the one: It has your name (or your fa vorite bank's name) on the title. You're paying for it (or you've already paid for it). Cars aren't cheap today, and it just makes good sense to look after them. The day we drove home from the dealer ship, most of us aspired to keep our new car pristine. But plenty of folks have "memory lapses," or, more than likely, they fall back into bad habits when it comes to car main tenance. Falling into a maintenance rut can be expensive in some situa tions, really expensive by causing many common car problems. Here's a list of car maintenance tips people too often don't follow: oil within the engine is absolutely critical for the longterm life of your Check tyre pressure vehicle. Check the lights Change the oil and filter regularly How many times do you take a walk around your car to check the Okay, we've mentioned checking the oil, but how many people post lights? You're not alone. Plenty of folks neglect vehicle lamps, which pone oil and filter changes (engine oil, engine oil filters and coolant should be a routine element of car maintenance. Lamps are (obvious as well)? Plenty, we'll bet. Maintaining a clean, adequate supply of ly) incredibly important, and there's no reason not to check them regularly, since it's a simple process. Turn on the head lights. Check park lamps, high and lowbeam lamps and the license plate light. If your vehicle is equipped with fog or driving lamps, inspect them. Examine the indicators (all four corners) and follow up with an in spection of the hazards. Back up against a wall where you can see the lights, apply the foot brake and check the brake lights. Place the vehicle in reverse (with the hand brake on) and check the backup lights. If any bulbs are burned out, or if there is a lighting problem, it's obviously time to repair. And the repairs aren't dif ficult or expensive. Don't overload the vehicle Drive down any road, in any part of the country and you'll see it soon enough: An overwhelmed car or truck filled to the brim with someone's "load" and/or yank ing a trailer. Most frequently, you'll see the results at the side of the road, with the hood raised. Often, it's simply a matter of an overtaxed cooling system, but in other cases, we've even examined buckled frames and broken axles. As you can well imagine, those things cost plenty to fix. It's a lot less costly to simply figure out what load you're carrying (or towing), then crossreference it against the load capacity decal on the door jamb of your vehicle. Keep in mind that passengers and their luggage are also included in the total "load" figure. If the load is too big, then either reduce the size or use From only • Learn from leading academics something more capable of handling it. Shopping safety tips to keep you safe this festive season >> Remain cautious during festivities

I

T’S that time of year again! The festive season is here and we are all finishing off projects at work, school is almost out and everybody wants to take a well-deserved break. Shopping malls are decorated for Christmas and BIG shopping lies ahead. Keep in mind that criminals love Christmas as much as we do, except they do not use their credit cards or cash. Read through the following safety tips for festive season shopping and make sure that you stay alert. You do not want all your Christmas shopping stolen before you even get home. Safety Tips for Festive Season Shopping #1: Shopping Mall Parking Most shopping mall parking lots have security guards and car guards, but there are a few things that you still have to be aware of when you park your car to spend the rest of the day shopping to your heart’s content. Damage to your car by other shoppers can result in the following: Shopping trolleys: Small dents and scratch marks can damage the paintwork of your car when negligent shoppers do not steer their trolleys properly.

Parking space: Car doors can dent and scratch your car when parking too close. Always park as close as possible to the entrance you want to use and make sure that another driver can’t try to squeeze between your car and the next parking spot. Acknowledge the closest car guard and remember what he/she looks like. If something happens to your car, you may have a witness and hopefully the registration number of the culprit. Safety Tips for Festive Season Shopping #2: Personal Safety Never park next to vans and cars with tinted windows. Lock all doors, close all windows and check again before you walk away. If possible, have somebody accompany you when shopping. Do not approach your car if you see suspicious people lurking around. If possible, ask a car guard or security guard to accompany you to your car if you have a trolley loaded with shopping bags and gifts. Be aware of your surroundings and have your keys ready when you approach your car. Lock your car doors immedi-

ately when you are in the car. Safety Tips for Festive Season Shopping #3: Shopping bags Never leave packages and shopping bags visible on your car seat, rather lock it in your car trunk. Buy the most expensive items later in the day and do not leave them in the car when you continue shopping. When you take purchases to your car and want to continue shopping, park your car in another spot so that prowlers may think that you have left for the day. Enjoy your shopping and we hope that these safety tips for festive season shopping will help to keep you safe.
