ANDILE SITHOLE andile.sithole@media24.com RESIDENTS of Riet River, Verulam say the city and government has neglected them for the past 20 years as they continue to live in appalling conditions without basic services. Some residents have been living in a squatter camp for more than 30 years. Rokmoney Govender (61), is a pensioner and has lived for more than 20 years in a oneroom tin house with her daughter and granddaughter. She told the Weekly she has to walk more than one kilometre to get water from a tap used by more than 300 residents. ”I am frail and I have to carry a 10-litre bucket of water every day. The officials have been making empty promises [for] 20 years and we voted for the ANC hoping our lives would change, but it never happened.” Riet River is few kilometres away from the Cornubia housing project - a R25 billion project that was opened by President Jacob Zuma in 2014. Residents claim that their applications to occupy flats at Cornubia housing project were rejected. Another resident, Sorosathee Ramlal (72), has also been living in the area for more than 30 years without water and electricity. “I have been living here for over 30 years and nothing has changed. Politicians have come and promised us RDP houses and other basic services, but nothing is happening. I pay R2 for a bucket of water every day. I applied to get a house in Cornubia in 2014, but until now nothing has happened,” she said. DA PR councillor Chris Langa said that officials from Department of Housing will visit the area to assess the situation. “I have received complaints from the residents in Riet River about poor service delivery. “It is shocking to note that after 22 years of democracy we still have people who live in shacks. I will report this matter to the council and see how we can assist them,” he said. The eThekwini Municipality Head of Communications, Tozi Mthethwa, said there were projects in place to assist dwellers from the informal settlements. “eThekwini Municipality made a decision in 2002 to do away with the waiting-list approach tfor allocations of housing. As per the housing plan adopted by the council in 2011, the priority for the Breaking New Ground housing project is to address the needs of people living in informal settlements. “All informal settlements in Durban have been assessed according to the suitability of the location for safe living environments. “Informal settlements in Durban, which are located on land suitable for permanent housing, are being upgraded for formal housing. Greenfield projects like Cornubia have to accommodate residents from informal settlements that are in dangerous locations like on flood plains, under power lines or on steep hills. A percentage of these projects are also set aside for high priority cases,” she said. Mthethwa urged the residents to be patient while the municipality is trying to assist them. “The municipality has great sympathy for those who find themselves in need of housing, the City has a backlog of housing estimated at just over 400 000 units and cannot promise everyone that their needs will be met immediately. When opportunities are available in Greenfields sites like Cornubia, these will be advertised in the media.”

ICTORIA Primary School in Tongaat will now have four additional classes after the Divine Life Society made a pledge to help expand the school at a sod turning ceremony held at the school on 17 August. The new classes will accommodate more pupils coming Tongaat and surrounding areas as they currently are not able to cater for more pupils. Principal of Victoria Primary Lajeeth Maharaj said the school has more than 700 pupils from around Tongaat. He said that the school was last renovated in 1945 when the main block was built by a committee that

Education is the most powerful tool that can be used to change our society. “In recent years we have noted that a higher number of pupils are coming to our school. accommodate the high number of pupils. We requested assistance from Divine Life Society in order to accommodate pupils coming into our school,” he said.

ucation system. Chetty said that former president Nelson Mandela was released from prison in 1990 and he went out his way to ask for donations from businesses to build schools. “Mandela said in order for us to get the country right, we must get the education right. “It is so fulfilling and reaffirming to see the Divine Life Society making the dream of former president come true. The Department of Education goes way back and shares a wonderful relationship with the Divine Life Society,” he said. Reaction Unit SA crime report Vehicle crashes into building: Ottawa One person was injured following an accident on Old Main Road in Ottawa on Sunday 7 August 2016. Members of Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) were dispatched to the scene after receiving several calls from passing motorists requesting medical as sistance for a woman who was injured in the accident. Upon arrival paramedics found a Toyota Corolla had crashed through a boundary fence before knocking in to a business premises. The driver of the vehicle sustained moderate inju ries and was treated on scene by paramedics before being transported to hospital. The passenger was not injured. Hijacking: Verulam Residents are urged to be on the lookout for a white C200 MercedesBenz with registration NJ 32130. The vehicle was hijacked from Robin Street in Dawncrest, Verulam, on Wednesday night by three armed sus pects. The victim was assaulted with a firearm howev er refused medical attention. Stolen vehicle recovered: Verulam A Nissan Sentra that was stolen on Croton Road in Brindhaven, Verulam, recently was recovered by members of Reaction Unit South Africa abandoned on Alamanda Road. At approximately 8.30pm on Wednesday night a member of public contacted the Rusa Operations Cen tre reporting the stolen vehicle. The caller claimed that the vehicle belonged to a relative who was visiting them and had parked the car on the roadside. When he returned to the spot where he had parked his car he found that it had been stolen. The information was circulated via twoway radio to all Rusa officers. Officer Arveen Manohar was on patrol in Brindhaven when he noticed a vehicle match ing the description abandoned on the roadside. The vehicle was handed back to the owner who declined to register a criminal case. Motor vehicle collision: Verulam Five people were injured following a motor vehicle collision on Inanda Road in Verulam, last week. At approximately 7.20am on Monday morning members of Reaction Unit South Africa were dis patched to the collision after receiving several calls from motorists reporting the incident. Upon arrival officers found a VW Golf had collided into the back of a Toyota Hiace taxi. Four occupants of the taxi and a passenger in the VW Golf sustained moderate injuries and were treated on scene before being transported to hospital. Late councillor’s legacy lives on ANDILE SITHOLE

“T

HE late Democratic Alliance (DA) councillor and community activist Brian Jayanathan gave his life to the people and the community at large believing that it was crucial to serve the community of Tongaat.” This according to his daughter Shantall Jayanathan as 15 August marked a year since he died due an illness. “My father’s life was a celebration. It was good and it was fruitful. He was the ultimate essence of unselfishness. “He gave his life to the people and the community at large believing that service to mankind is service to God. He touched the lives of the people and did everything in a great way. There was nothing he could not do.”

She described her father as someone that was impossible to defeat and he did not need pep talks or pushing to make a difference in the community. Jayanathan died after he was diagnosed with stomach cancer in December 2013. He had gastrectomy surgery on 28 May 2014 where his stomach was removed. Despite the ordeal, he was still hoping for a better life. “My father was a fighter, he was a survivor, he never settled for anything less and wanted the very best for his family and those around him. He fought until the very end. “Over the years my father has served in various religious, welfare and community-based organisations including Cansa, he was the PRO for Tongaat Inter-

faith Religious Committee, the founder of Jayanathan Food Aid and many more,” she said. DA leader in KwaZulu-Natal Zwakele Mcwango said Jayanathan would be remembered for his great community work. He said Jayanathan was a great leader whose interest was to serve the community at large.

HE 2016 local-government elections proved to be a journey of discovery for all of the political parties. After months on the campaign trail, whipping crowds into a frenzy with song and dance, belting out big promises and shaming the opponents, political leaders were presented with hard truths by the electorate. None of the parties performed as well as they had hoped, but some did better than others. The Democratic Alliance (DA) in-

creased its share of the vote and won the largest number of votes in several municipalities that were previously ANC strongholds. The DA’s biggest successes were in Nelson Mandela Bay and Tshwane, and it surpassed its own expectations by reducing the ANC’s majority in Johannesburg. The Inkatha Freedom Party regained ground it previously lost to the ANC and proved it cannot be written off as a dying political brand. The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) did not win any municipality as it had hoped, and was not able to triple its support as its leaders had pitched. However, in Gauteng in particular, the results show significant numbers of people switching from the ANC to the EFF. The ANC’s results have become the biggest area of focus. The party took a beating across the country, dropping to 53,9% nationally and losing support in all provinces except KwaZulu-Natal. But even in KwaZulu-Natal, the party lost control of municipalities where it previously

The ANC has been stunned by the results in Gauteng, with all three metros left hanging, and is heavily bruised at losing its majority in Nelson Mandela Bay after so much time and resources were invested in retaining control of the municipality. The ANC is now struggling to forge coalitions with opposition parties in hung municipalities with relations with its opponents at an all-time low. Smaller parties are wary about cooperating with the ANC, fearing they will be treated with disdain. The EFF is trying to use its leverage to secure concessions from both the ANC and the DA, and is stalling on making commitments with either one. For journalists covering the elec-

tions and counting process, it was a roller-coaster ride. A large media contingent was based at the Independent Electoral Commission’s results operations centre in Pretoria, where we watched the results trickle in from last Wednesday night. Those were tense days, watching political-party delegations study the screens, monitor the IEC processes for discrepancies and compare figures to what their party agents at counting centres were sending them. There were whoops of delight occasionally from the DA, but most others looked distraught as the big screens animated their poor performances. Journalists had the benefit of having dozens of politicians at our disposal, willing to talk and do interviews as the situation unfolded. But we also had to be careful not to be misled. Some minor parties did their best to put a positive spin on the results, claiming that they had performed better than previous elections. Others were jumping the gun, proclaiming victory in municipalities before all the

votes were counted. As the ANC’s losses became visible, the party’s delegates punted a line that they had received five million more votes than they had in the previous election. It had to be pointed out to them that the number of ANC ballots did not translate to actual voters as people had marked either two or three ballots, for the metro and district municipalities. Some of the party leaders accused the media of taking perverted pleasure in their misery. Perhaps some did, but for many of us the 2016 election was a humbling, learning experience. We all assume that we know our country. Politicians claim to speak for others and take people’s loyalty for granted. With simple crosses, voters communicated so much and pointed the country in a new direction. Simply put - a pool of investors’ money is used to invest in financial instruments such as equities (shares) and bonds. Unit trusts are a cost-effective way to access a share portfolio. Unit trusts continue to offer exciting capital growth opportunities over the medium to long term. Investing in a unit trust allows the individual and a legal entity (investors other than individuals) to invest in a variety of asset classes using the professional skill of a unit trust company (i.e. fund manager) at reasonable contribution amounts. These come already readymade (i.e. the fund manager has already chosen the assets and the underlying companies attached to these). The investor needs to select the applicable unit trust according to the risk profile and how much time they have to leave the money invested. Ideally a unit trust investment should be invested for a minimum period of five years.

The Falcon athletes. THIS weekend saw the return of the half marathons following the winter road running hibernation. The Supa Mama half marathon and 10km hosted by Savages AC was held at the weekend and the tough race saw runners grinding out a performance following lengthy layoffs. Checkout Verulam Falcons were led by a trio of women leading Team Falcons. Lungile Hlongwa Falcons 2015 Sportsperson of the year

showed true grit and posted a credible sub two hour time. She was also placed third in her category. She was followed by the valiant Val Naidu who recorded a tenacious performance. Vitasha Ramnarayan rounded off the trio of women occupy the first three positions. This signals well for Women’s Month. Ebrahim Asmal and Nikhil Ramnarayan completed the 10km walk.

n 17 August, 1966, the Volvo 144 was presented in the midst of an ongoing manhunt. With this new model series, Volvo could develop into a considerably bigger car maker. In eight years, no fewer than 1.25 million cars were produced – creating Volvo’s first million-seller. At its global launch, almost 400 journalists were in attendance at the Lorensberg function rooms in Gothenburg that day. The new Volvo 144 was to be presented, unveiled by raising a dividing wall behind which three preseries models of the new Swedish car were waiting. Rumours about Volvo’s new model had been circulating for several years and what the press now finally got to see was an austere and modern vehicle. Parallel to the unveiling in Gothenburg, the new model was also revealed in Oslo, Copenhagen and Helsinki. The cars used at the press show in Gothenburg had been lifted into the premises the evening before by crane, hidden in large wooden crates. The procedure was supposed to be as discreet as possible, but this proved difficult since a major manhunt was under way to catch two police killers. A nationwide alert had been issued and as

the wooden crates were being lifted into the function rooms, the police received a tip-off that both fugitives may have been in the audience at the adjacent cinema, which had to be evacuated. In June 1960, Volvo’s management – with CEO Gunnar Engellau at the helm – made the final decision on the basic directive for the new car. The P660, as the project was designated, was to be larger than the Amazon, but of the same weight and price class. It was to fulfil strict safety requirements and comfortably carry four or five peo-

ple. Moreover, the car was to have the same wheelbase as its predecessors, the PV 544 and the Amazon. Unlike when the Amazon was developed, several different chassis versions were planned from the start. With the 140 series, Volvo introduced a naming scheme in which the first digit designated the model series, the second digit the number of cylinders and the third digit the number of doors. Mass production of the 144 started two days after the presentation, on 19 August 1966. In 1967 the two-door

142 was launched, and in 1968 production of the 145 estate began. A closely related model was the 164, which was launched as the 1969 model. It shared many chassis components with the 140 series, but had a 10cm longer wheelbase and a longer front to fit the straight six-cylinder B30 engine. Yet another chassis version was launched in 1970 - the spacious loadcarrying Volvo 145 Express, on which the roof was raised from the B pillar and back. Chief designer Jan Wilsgaard was also the man behind the Amazon’s elegant lines. There was a strong desire for a grille design reminiscent of the Amazon’s. The shoulder that widened the doors below the side windows was also similar to that on the Amazon The 140 series was well suited to the ideals of the 1960s, giving precedence to function. Scandinavian design, with its clean and simple lines, is a popular approach today and the 140 series is a prime example of its expression. The 140 series entailed several important advances in both passive and active safety. The chassis was extremely resilient to twisting and was fitted with crumple zones and a protective roll cage. The brake system was

advanced with disc brakes both front and rear together with a dual-circuit system with twin hydraulic circuits at the front. This provided a three-way partitioning of the circuits, so that if one circuit failed both front brakes and one rear brake would still function. There were also reducing valves to prevent the wheels locking during heavy braking. A split steering column and a dashboard with a collision-protected frame were other safety features. The Volvo 140 series had a conventional design with a front-mounted engine and rear-wheel drive. Initially, the series employed the tried and tested 1.8-litre four-cylinder B18 engine from the Amazon, producing 55 kW – or 70 kW with twin carburettors. The 1969 model had the 2-litre B20 engine, producing 60 kW and 75 kW respectively. When production of the 142, the 144 and the 145 came to an end in 1974, 1 251 371 cars had rolled off the production line. The model series became the company’s first million-seller. The legacy of the 140 series is, however, greater than this, stretching all the way to 1993. Its replacement, the Volvo 240, borrowed much from the 140 series chassis and went on to become Volvo’s most mass-produced model, with some 2.8 million cars built in 19 years. - Supplied.

Tonver ‘ice’ Friendship Games >> North Coast pupils finish with medals

ONVER once again emerged as the most powerful school sports council when the Friendship Games was held in Chatsworth on Saturday. Five bus loads of eager pupils (athletes) made the trip to participate in friendly rivalry in sports. Their expectations were met when they took the field and this “moment of glory” will remain with them for a long time. Despite challenging times, the coaches and pupils delivered to ensure that Tonver “roared”. The medal count is as follows : Gold – U13: netball, volleyball (boys) and chess. U15: volleyball – girls

and boys teams. U17: netball, volleyball (boys), chess and soccer (boys). Silver – U11: netball, volleyball (boys), table tennis (boys) chess and soccer. U15: table tennis (girls and boys) and chess. U17: volleyball (girls). Bronze – U11: volleyball (girls) and table tennis (girls). U13: volleyball (girls), table tennis (girls and boys) and soccer. U15: netball. U17: table tennis (girls and boys). The chief code convenors were Trevor Pillay (volleyball), Sagie Pillay (soccer), Shamla Govender (netball), Roselyn Moonsamy (chess) and Navin Panday (table tennis). They were thankful to the pupils,

coaches and managers who made Team Tonver proud. The gold medal count could have been doubled if only all schools rose to the occasion and fully supported these games, said one of the organisers. Notice The Tonver games that were postponed due to inclement weather are now set to take place in Tongaat on 23 August 2016. Schools that qualified from their respective groups in the round robin stage will now proceed to the games finals to declare a true Tonver Champion. ALYPSO Sporting continued with their good performance from the past week against Spain F.C in the indoor football league. The match started as usual in full attack by Calypso Sporting, but the team took a littler longer than usual to settle down and get the first goal. Spain F.C. were strong and also tried to break the deadlock but failed. Calypso Sporting’s defenders were resilient and did not allow any goals to be scored.
