HE ongoing political intolerance between ANC members and a DA ward councillor in Tongaat brought a community meeting to standstill uMbhayi Informal settlements at the weekend.

The Ward 61 councillor Dolly Munien convened a community meeting to speak to residents about the housing project that eThekwini Municipality intends to roll out, but the meeting was brought to a halt and thereafter called off after tensions ran high between ANC members and DA supporters.

ANC supporters accused Munien of turning a community meeting into a DA rally.

However, Munien is adamant that the ANC leaders in the area are inciting residents to “turn against her”.

DA chairperson for the north Durban constituency Emmanuel Mhlongo told the Weekly: “We are very disappointed at the manner in which ANC members treated the ward councillor at a community meeting. We will be reporting the matter to the office of the Speaker and to the ANC leadership in the region.

“We believe that the ANC is unhappy about losing the ward after the local government elections. Some members told us that the ANC is the majority political party in uMbhayi and therefore the ANC PR councillor must be in charge of service delivery to the community.

“The meeting was disrupted and was called off. We suspect there are a few individuals in the community sowing division among the members of the community because they are unhappy after losing at the recent local government elections,” he added.

“It is evident that there are people from the ANC inciting the community to turn against me.

Maxwell Ndunge came to my office prior to the meeting and told me that uMbhayi belongs to the ANC, not the DA. “As the elected ward councillor I was shocked because I represent the entire ward and the members of the community, irrespective of their political affiliation,” said Munien.

“We expected her to come with officials from eThekwini Municipality to deliver the service to

the community. We respect her as the ward councillor, but we will not allow her to come with DA supporters to uMbhayi because it creates the wrong impression,” he said.

However, Munien said that the DA council-

lors, who accompanied her were there to assist with translations and had nothing to do with service delivery.

“The DA councillors, who accompanied me to the meeting acted as my translators to break down the language barrier,” said Munien.

When the Weekly asked Ndunge about the alleged remarks he made at Munien’s office, he said: “Those allegations are not true. I never threatened her. We respect her and she was supposed come to our area as ward councillor, not as a DA member,” he said.

The uMbhayi Informal Settlement was one of the strongholds of the ANC before the new councillors were elected after elections in August. The area has been under the leadership of the ANC for the past 20 years.

A member of the community, who wished to remain anonymous for fear of victimisation, told the Weekly: “For the past 20 years uMbhayi residents suffered. Children as young as two years old got electrocuted [due to] loose electricity cables and died.

“We were over the moon when we heard that the ward councillor called a meeting to address residents about the housing project scheduled for uMbhayi.

“However, I was disappointed by the manner in which some of the ANC leaders treated the ward councillor.

“I was there at the meeting when ANC supporters booed the ward councillor and made derogatory remarks about her,” she said.

NPA welcomes robbery conviction WEEKLY REPORTER

HE National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) welcomed the conviction of Senzo Ntombela, who was sentenced to 40 years’ imprisonment at the Durban Regional court on 5 October for various cases he committed in the north and south of Durban between 2007 and 2015.

Ntombela was sentenced to 15 years for robbery, 10 for murder, two

for sexual assault, 10 for unlawful possession of a firearm and three for unlawful possession of ammunition.

The robbery case was committed in Verulam in 2007 and the accused failed to appear in court that year.

Ntombela was arrested in June last year after the police received a tip-off about his whereabouts and was found in possession unlicensed firearm and live rounds of ammunition.

The court heard that the accused

Reaction Unit SA crime report Motor vehicle collision: Verulam MEMBERS of the Reaction Units SA (Rusa) responded to an accident at approximately 6.30pm on Monday 3 October.

Officers were dispatched to the south bound lane of the R102 in between the Verulam and Ottawa intersection after receiving reports of a motor vehicle collision.

Upon arrival a Hyundai Getz was found in the right hand lane facing the flow of traffic.

The driver claimed the while travelling on the R102, a blue Toyota Corolla knocked into his vehicle causing it to spin out of control.

The Hyundai Getz crashed into the metal barrier separating the north and south bound lanes. The driver of the Toyota Corolla did not stop at the scene.

Both occupants of the Hyundai Getz were not injured in the crash.

Suspect apprehended: Verulam A suspect was arrested by members of Reaction Unit South Africa aft-

er he attempted to break into a home on Fairview Drive in Brindhaven, Verulam on Tuesday 4 October.

Officers were dispatched to the residence after a 22-year-old female contacted the Rusa Operations Centre reporting that a suspect was on her property.

Upon arrival a neighbour informed officers that he had noticed the suspect attempting to open a window. When he questioned the suspect he claimed that he was working on the property.

The neighbour then noticed the suspect jumping over the boundary wall and fleeing from the property.

Officers obtained a description of the suspect and while on patrol found him walking on Dianthus Road. When he noticed the approaching Rusa patrol vehicle he attempted to flee, but was he apprehended.

The suspect was positively identified by neighbours as the person who attempted to break

was linked to charges of murder and sexual assault related to an incident that happened in Hibberdene in April 2015.

NPA regional spokesperson Natasha Kara said: “Ballistic testing linked the accused to charges of murder and sexual assault relating to incidents that took place in Hibberdene. The accused was in a tavern where he sexually assaulted a woman.

“He shot and killed a patron, who

intervened [to assist] the woman involved.

“The accused was on the run until his arrest two months later. Senior State Advocate Mahendra Naidu led ballistic evidence that linked the accused to the tavern murder.

“He also led the testimony of a witness, who was in the tavern on the night of the murder and sexual assault,” said Kara.

The sentences of sexual assault and

unlawful possession of firearm and ammunition will run concurrently with the murder charge.

KZN director of Public Prosecutions, Advocate Moipone Noko said: “The conviction and sentence in this matter is welcomed. Justice has indeed been served.

“This was not an easy case to prove and the efforts of the prosecutor advocate Mahendra Naidu are most appreciated.”

Children injured in collision: Verulam Three children aged 6, 8 and 10 years were injured following a collision on the R102 near the Ottawa intersection.

At approximately 11.30am on Saturday 8 October members of Reaction Unit South Africa were dispatched to the scene after receiving several calls from passing motorists reporting the incident.

Upon arrival a Toyota Hilux bakkie was found to have collided into the back of a BMW.

The force of the impact resulted in the two older boys, who were seated at the back of the bakkie, to be thrown against the back glass.

Both boys suffered cuts to their faces from the broken glass.

The six-year-old boy, who was seated in the front of the bakkie, slammed against the dash board.

Paramedics from several private ambulance services responded to the scene and treated the injured before transporting them to hospital.

The occupants of the BMW were not injured.

Cyclist injured in crash: Verulam At approximately 12.15pm on Saturday 8 October members of Reaction Unit South Africa were dispatched to Buffels Drive in Verulam after receiving requests for medical assistance for an injured cyclist.

Upon arrival a 24-year-old man was found on the side of an unpaved road.

He had sustained severe injuries after his bicycle overturned while travelling downhill.

The cyclist was stabilised on scene before being transported to hospital.

You will see that your calculation is not that simple anymore.

Let’s look at problem number 1 ­ The first thing to remember is that your income disappears when you die.

Therefore, it’s no longer about paying tax at your rate, but rather about paying tax at your spouse’s income tax rate.

So, what’s the solution?

When doing your life insurance calculation, you must work with your after tax income and then inflate that by your spouse’s tax rate. The problem now, though, is that your spouse’s tax

Another way of looking at this is to ask the question: “Would the insured suffer a financial loss should they lose an asset because of theft, destruction, or on the death of the life insured?”

Insurable interest must also exist at some point in time in order to have a valid life insurance claim. For instance, with car and home insurance, an insurable interest must exist at the time of claim. With life insurance, the insurable interest must only exist when the life cover was taken out.

Myth 1 The incidence of breast cancer in younger women is increasing.

Truth Breast cancers in younger women who are of celeb­ rity status is resulting in increased media coverage of their cases, but typically, breast cancers develop in women between the ages of 50 and 70.

Myth2 The contribution of chemotherapy to reducing mortality is significant.

Truth A multidisciplinary approach that combines a num­ ber of treatment options that include surgery, radia­ tion, chemotherapy, hormonal and biologic agents is most effective. Specialist centres, which see more than 150 cases of breast cancer per year will achieve the best results as here the most accurate diagnosis will be made and the most appropriate treatment options chosen.

Myth 3 Smoking increases your risk of breast cancer.

Truth Breast cancer is one of the few cancers where risk is not increased due to smok­ ing.

Myth 4 A mammogram is a mammogram.

Truth The accuracy of mammographic diagno­ sis in screening, which forms the bulk of all mammography performed in South Africa, is de­ pendent on: 1. Optimal equipment used to produce the mam­ mogram – these days full­field digital mammographic equipment is regarded as state of the art.

2. The optimal image as produced by a radiogra­ pher specialised in mammography.

3. The optimal reading of the image is usually pro­ vided by doctors who specialise in breast imaging and who have possibly received overseas training in mam­ mography interpretation.

4. A process of rigorous quality control, where all outcomes are recorded and regularly analysed.

Only where all of these conditions are met, will the promise of lowering the mortality rates from breast cancer and the increase in breast conservation be real­ ised.

Myth 5 It doesn’t make a difference where you are treated.

Truth A very important, but often overlooked factor is where a patient is treated. It has been shown that de­ pendent on where the woman is treated for breast can­ cer, the risk of death within 5 years can be up to 60% higher in environments where only few breast cancers are treated versus environments where more than 150 breast cancers are treated per year. This effect is larger than any chemotherapy, hormonal therapy and radia­ tion.

Myth 6 Removing the entire breast is better than breast conservation.

Truth Breast cancer metastasizes to places outside of the breast. The tumour in the breast will not kill you – the spread of the cancer to the brain, lungs etc., will. As breast cancer often does that early in the course of the disease, a mastectomy will not guarantee you better survival than breast conserving therapy.

Should a radical mastectomy be necessary, breast reconstruction can take place during the same session that the mastectomy is performed. A multidisciplinary treatment approach involves: The oncologic surgeon, a radiation oncologist, a medical oncologist and a plas­ tic surgeon to optimally time and sequence the individ­ ual treatments.

WITH breast cancer being one of the most prevalent types of cancer found among the female population, we are seeing more patients receiving various types of breast surgery including mastectomy (removal of the breast), partial mastectomy, lumpectomy followed by reconstructive surgery.

Physiotherapists provides treatments for post breast cancer or reconstructive surgery.

Most patients do have some form of discomfort post surgery.

The effects of chemotherapy and radiation treatment can also influence the effects of surgery leading to more stiffness, weakness and lymph oedema (swelling).

Common symptoms after surgery Some of the most frequently felt symptoms post-breast surgery include the following: · Stiffness around the shoulder and limited movement of the shoulder · Swelling of the arm on the affected side · Surgery scar that is painful and stiff · Skin that is pulling on the arm on the affected side (cording) · Altered sensation of the skin · Severe headaches · Decreased neck and thoracic movement.

Physiotherapy treatment after breast surgery aims to restore movement of the shoulder, neck and thoracic area.

Physiotherapists also help to improve the condition of the scar by decreasing stiffness and swelling and helping to regain mobility.

Careful treatment is also given to reduce the discomfort of cording and to assist the patient in managing swelling of the affected side.

Physiotherapists understand that to lose a breast or part of it can be extremely traumatic and emotionally devastating, not to mention the fear of being diagnosed with cancer.

Treatment is done in a safe, comfortable environment and is formulated to suit individual patient because each operation is different.

INDING out that you have breast cancer can be a shock and a set back.

A Tongaat mother and grandmother shares her experiences with the Weekly.

Joyce Govender (63) was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1997 at RK Khan Hospital at the age of 40.

She went for a surgical procedure (lumpectomy) to remove an underarm lump near her right breast.

“I was diagnosed at RK Khan Hospital in 1997 in Chatsworth.

When doctors told me that I had breast cancer, I was very upset and depressed because I was under the impression that cancer is a death

sentence.

“I wept and prayed in hospital.

I had surgery on my right breast and an underarm lump was removed,” she said.

She told the Weekly that she has become a living testimony in her community as she defeated breast cancer in its early stages.

Govender is spreading a message of hope to senior citizen clubs in Belvedere and encourages other residents to go for regular cancer check-ups to the clinic.

Despite all challenges she encountered in her life, she is now volunteer raising breast cancer awareness in Tongaat.

HE mother of two, 58­year­old Dixie Woolley, says it is only with the support of her family, espe­ cially her daughter Jolene, who kept pushing her to fight when all she wanted to do was give up, that she was able to beat breast cancer, twice.

Woolley found the first lump by acci­ dent in 1998 while getting dressed for work. “I felt an aching lump where the

underwire of my bra was and when I turned sideways I could see a it protrud­ ing. It was the size of a bantam egg.

“I went into ostrich­with­its­head­ in­the­sand mode for three weeks until it ached quite a bit. As I didn’t have med­ ical aid, a friend of a friend was an onco­ logist at Addington Government Hospi­ tal and I got to see him.”

Woolley had a needle biopsy and mammogram done and was diagnosed with breast cancer in her right breast.

Woolley went home five days later and got on with her life as normal.

Wolley’s message to those going through what she went through: “Take it day by day and find someone who will support you and help carry you through because it is not easy.

To remind herself what she has con­ quered Woolley had a tattoo of a pink ribbon done on her shoulder.

She went for a lumpectomy, radio­ therapy and six sessions of chemo and then told she was in remission.

However, 14 years later, Woolley dur­ ing her annual mammogram, discov­ ered a lump in her left breast. “I had a sonar and had to get a biopsy done pri­ vately, funded by my sister in America, because Addington Government Hospi­ tal didn’t have one biopsy needle then.

It came back positive for breast cancer again – stage two this time.

“Breast cancer is not the end of the world and people must not lose hope. Prayer changes everything and you can overcome anything if you have faith as little as a mustard seed.

I started doing counseling a year after I found out that I had breast cancer.

“Perhaps the support that I received from my family and friends is what motivated me to be optimistic and conquer the disease.

“I go for checkups every year to Mediclinic Victoria Hospital in Tongaat and the results so far have been have been good. I can say with no doubts that I am a breast cancer survivor,” she said.

In 2010 she was one of the volunteers at Verulam Regional Hospice participating in community outreach projects.

HWETHA Suredin is a go-getter and encourages other people to work hard to make their dreams a reality.

The 19-year-old hails from Tongaat, but she is currently completing her BA in Communication Graphic Design at University of Johannesburg.

She is among the finalists who will be vying for the Miss India South Africa crown at the Lyric Theatre at Gold Reef City, Johannesburg on 3 December.

The Weekly caught up with her ahead of the competition.

Coastal Weekly (CW): Where did you grow up?

Shwetha Suredin (SS): I grew up in Tongaat (Maidstone). Due to career growth my parents relocated to Gauteng with my brother in 2004. I joined

them a year later so that I could complete the school year without disruption.

CW: Tell us about your road to success.

SS: Upon entering the Miss India SA pageant, I grew extensively as an individual. It provided a platform for me to showcase myself and taught me that no matter what situation you are in, you have to ooze confidence.

The platform has provided endless opportunities for me and other young women in the community and ultimately has contributed greatly to my success.

CW: Who inspired you with regards to your achievements?

SS: Along the way I have been motivated and inspired by many people.

My parents, grandparents, teachers and famous people, but ultimately myself, because I believe once you believe

in yourself anything is possible.

CW : Who do you currently admire in your career?

SS: I had the privilege of growing up with my grandparents - my grandfather the late Krish Suredin, a former teacher and principal from Tongaat, has probably been the greatest inspiration in my life thus far.

From a young age he has influenced me to pursue my dreams and made absolutely sure that I am well educated and I am capable of conquering anything.

In the design world there's no single person I can pinpoint because I believe that each and every designer is unique and talented in his/her own way.

SS: At the age of 18 I took a pledge to be an organ donor.

This is because two years ago I lost my maternal grandmother to organ failure.

The pledge to be a donor was solely my own and it's because I think that it would cost nothing to save another life after death.

HEVROLET has come out swinging in the seven-seater SUV market once again, with a revised Trailblazer line-up that represents even better value for money and gives buyers more options in terms of drivetrains and specification.

The 2017 model year range now comprises five manual and automatic versions of the rear-wheel-drive 2.5-litre LT, rear and four-wheel-drive auto and manual versions of the 2.8 LTZ and a new flagship in the shape of the Z71, which is based on the LTZ 4x4.

The price band is from R464 000 to R623 200 for the Z71, which pays homage to Chevrolet’s rich ‘Zee’ car performance heritage.

“The new Trailblazer brings together superior levels of refinement, styling, comfort and technology with class-leading performance and drivability to meet the versatile needs of increasingly discerning customers,” said Brian Olson, vice president vehicles sales, service and marketing General Motors Sub-Saharan Africa.

Chevrolet Trailblazer buyers can now opt for an uprated 2.5-litre turbodiesel engine (VGT – Variable Geometry Turbo) with a six-speed automatic transmission in the LT trim level. This 132kW/440Nm combination is unique to models equipped with automatic transmissions and gives it impressive punch exactly where it is needed, irrespective of load. Combined fuel consumption for the 2.5L Automatic models is rated at 8.6 l/100 km with 226 g/km of CO2 emissions.

Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes 11.0 seconds with a top speed limited to 180 km/h.

A ‘gradient braking’ function assists drivers with maintaining speed on difficult down hills – an especially useful safety benefit when towing. A fast-acting limited slip differential is ideal in this regard too (and also when driving on low traction surfaces), and remains a feature of all models.

The combined fuel consumption figure for models with this engine is 9.5 l/100 km, CO2 is 249 g/km. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes 10.4 seconds with a top speed limited to 180 km/h. Buyers have a choice of either a six speed automatic transmission with manual selection mode and grade braking or a six speed manual.

All models have a 76 litre fuel tank.

All Trailblazer models (bar the 2.5 manual – 2515 kg) can legally pull a braked trailer weighing 2 965kilograms.

LTZ models are available with optional four wheel drive with low range, which is the default set-up on the Z71.

Changing between the two-high, fourhigh, and four-low drive modes is just a turn of a dial away.

Brakes are equipped with four channel ABS with electronic Brake Force Distribution on all models.

Brakes are 300 mm ventilated discs in front and 295 mm discs at the rear.

The new Trailblazer is now fitted with an all new Electronic Power Steering (EPS) system. The new EPS system features Active Pull and Smooth Road Shake Compensation which all add to a smoother more refined driving experience.

Active Pull Compensation constantly measures steering wheel torque being applied by the driver to maintain the vehicle’s path. When the software detects extra effort being used, the steering assist motor adds torque in the proper direction to prevent the driver from having to make corrections to keep the vehicle on course.

The torque assistance makes steering easier thus reducing driver fatigue

and effort.

The Chevrolet face has become a familiar one on South African roads and the Trailblazer’s genes are very much apparent. The trademark ‘bowtie bar’ is now wider. Upper and lower grille sections now run the full width of the nose and have a series of bolder, horizontal, slats. Maximum visibility is ensured thanks to daylight running lights - which are of the powerful lightemitting diode (LED) type in the case of the LTZ. The new bonnet has sleeker contours on the leading edge.

Wider tyres (255mm width compared to 245 previously) on new 17inch wheels are fitted to LT derivatives and give it a more purposeful stance, while LTZ versions remain on 18-inch wheels with a glossy black design for the Z71. Tyre size is unchanged at 265/60.

Inside, the trailblazer boasts a newly designed dashboard and front console with a contemporary upmarket feel, enhanced by soft-touch materials and contrast stitching.

The Trailblazer is well suited to both the urban commute as well as long cross country adventures.

It has all the comfort and convenience features expected from a luxury SUV of this size including no fewer than five points for charging devices

and eight cup holders.

A unique feature of the Trailblazer is the provision of adjustable air conditioning for passengers in all three rows.

Fold-flat third row seating is also a key defining feature of this thoughtfully-designed family SUV. The new Trailblazer offers a more hushed ambience in the cabin thanks to a revised sound-deadening package and a more premium look and feel has been achieved with more widespread use of soft-touch materials and updated satellite controls on the leatherrimmed steering wheel.

Safety equipment across the range still includes ABS with EBD, PBA (Panic Brake Assist), HBFA (Hydraulic Brake Fade Assist), seven airbags (including full-length curtain airbags) the Trailblazer also picks up a driver’s knee airbag for added protection, pretensioning seatbelts, ISOFIX child seat anchors and front park assist.

LTZ models benefit from the addition of Stabilitrak electronic stability/ traction control, HDC (Hill Descent Control), and TSC (Trailer Sway Control). A rear mounted camera parking assistance system with cross traffic alert is also fitted.

Technology added to LTZ models for the 2017 model year are forward collision alert, lane departure warning, side blind zone alert, rear cross traffic alert and tyre pressure monitoring; giving it one of the most comprehensive driver aid packages available at this level.

The Trailblazer is a very attractive proposition in this segment with its intelligent tumble flat seven-seat configuration, generous equipment, excellent safety levels and established engines backed up by Chevrolet’s Complete Care after sales package with a best-in-class 5-year/120 000 km warranty and a highly-competitive 5-year and 90 000 km service plan.

“The recent upgrade reaffirms that the Trailblazer is great value – in fact, it is better value than ever - with more surprise and delight features than its rivals, especially in the way it integrates with mobile devices.

“Take the new safety equipment into account and the LTZ versions compare very favourably to more expensive vehicles as far as technology goes.

At the other end of the range, the combination of the automatic box with a high output version of the 2.5-litre in an LT grade will make Trailblazer accessible to a wider audience, while the styling update means it is still very contemporary too,” said Olson.

SOUTH Africa’s top selling passenger model, Polo Vivo, has been rejuvenated with the addition of a visually striking special edition, Storm.

Polo Vivo has been the top selling passenger model since its market introduction in March 2010. To date, Polo Vivo (hatch and sedan body variants) has sold 217 139units.

The special edition Storm, which is on sale now, is based on the 1.4i Trendline with 63kW hatch body variant.

The exterior of Storm differentiates itself from other Polo Vivo derivatives with standard features such as front foglights with chrome surrounds, 15-inch Tosa alloy wheels painted in black metallic, glossy black side mirrors and black decals on the side.

Falcons to host the Checkout Challenge

HECKOUT Verulam Falcons will be hosting the Checkout Half marathon and 10km run/walk on 6 November.

The race route is a scenic coastal route running along the Durban promenade.

Race organiser Amras Moodley is upbeat about delivering an enjoyable race. All participants will receive a T-shirt and goodie bag.

Moodley has indicated that it is all systems go and all technical matters have been attended to, he further noted that the anchor sponsor, the Check-

out Group, has pulled out all stops in ensuring that the race is a resounding success.

Race entry for 21km is R80 and R50 for the 10km. The race starts at 6.30am outside the Kings Park Stadium.

TONGAAT karateka Sazi Mcambi (10) was crowned KSA national champion at the development championships held at the Tongaat Sport Centre recently.

Sazi, a pupil from Victoria Primary School, demolished all oppositions from around the country to win the gold medal in his category.

Bowling club hosts lawn bowls for all ages

The Verulam Bowling club invites senior citizens to par­ ticipate in the lawn bowl training for all ages.

THE Verulam Bowling Club in partnership with Verulam Day and Frail Care centre hosted bowling sessions at the Canelands Bowling Green in celebration of the International Week of the Aged recently.

More than 20 people participated in the tournament.

Chairperson of the Verulam Bowling club Emmanuel Moodley said in a statement: “The quality of play of these participants was of a high standard. This shows that the game of bowls can

be played and enjoyed from the age of eight to your twilight years.”

The club urged members of the community to join the bowling sessions every Tuesday and Thursdays at the Canelands Bowling Green.

District coach and other officials provide free coaching lessons.

WHILE Sunday morning’s gusty windy weather kept most Tongaat residents indoors, 24 dedicated and committed Tongaat Panthers Athletics Club members hit the R102 towards the airport taking part in the 20th Leg of the Panthers Thinnys League Challenge.

The up and coming promising young Panther Rahul Ramlagan led the team home in the 15km in an excel­

lent time of 1:32, whilst the senior citizen walker Loga Naidoo led the 12km team home in a time of 1.30.

With just five legs of the league left for 2016, mem­ bers are determined to reach their goals.
