Mbonisweni Primary cleans up >> Residents and staff get their hands dirty GRAHAM BARCLAY

ASSIONATE pupils and staff at Mbonisweni Primary School in Hambanathi, Tongaat launched a new campaign on Monday, 23 April that seeks to create a cleaner environment at their school. More than 100 community members, including parents, teachers, civil society groups and pupils came together to partake in a massive cleanup programme aimed at promoting a healthy, cleaner and safer learning environment. Mthokozisi Mdakane, education officer at Durban Solid Waste (DSW), said the programme was the culmination of weeks of preparation and organisation. “All relevant stakeholders such as the community, government departments at municipal and provincial level, former students, the school’s management team as well as the business community were involved in the planning of this grand affair,” said Mdakane.
“This is only the beginning; we as DSW have a lot of programmes in the pipeline that will be rolled out in the different areas of our communities”, she added. The ‘Clean & Maintain My School’ campaign was born out of eThekwini Municipality’s brainchild initiative ‘Clean & Maintain My City’, which is a programme championed by eThekwini mayor, James Nxumalo. This programme coincides with the municipality’s vision of making eThekwini a caring and liveable city by 2030. Mbonisweni Primary School’s alumni also played a crucial role in the execution of this programme by giving back to their alma mater. This was done to ensure that the planning for the day’s activities came to greater fruition. Mdakane said the municipality wants to encourage the community of Hambanathi, its surrounding areas as well as the greater metropolitan area of eThekwini, to support this campaign and initiate clean-ups either at
their homes or churches. School principal, Ziphiwo Mahlobo expressed her happiness with the programme and pledged the school’s full support to its aims. “We are extremely happy that the municipality and DSW have identified our school as a venue to launch this wonderful campaign. We hope that our pupils will take heed of the valuable environmental lessons that the many officials have imparted in them,” said Mahlobo. “Working together with the community, we are confident that we will transform our school into a unique centre of excellence that will produce a great calibre of students,” she added. The activities for the day included a clean-up that saw many pupils and their parents participate in, while songs, dance and other forms of educational entertainment were among some of the other items for the day. The day ended with a keynote address by KZN Member of Provincial Legislature (MPL), Lindiwe Bebee, who discussed the importance of community involvement in meeting government halfway where development is concerned.

ANOTHER successful Gandhi Salt March was held on Saturday 24 April, which drew a large crowd of participants in support of the values the event represents. Trustee of the Gandhi Development Trust, Kidar Ramgobin, said this year saw a link with Martin Luther King Foundation being forged through the participation of Professor Julie Washington from Atlanta, Georgia who gave a powerful message of support. Linda Zama from the KZN Premier’s office, Logie Naidoo from eThekwini Municipality, Consul General of India for Durban, Rajagopalan Raghunathan, Bishop Mike Voster and Hindu Swami from the Ananda Marg all prayed and gave messages of support. Many temple groups brought young participants from their faiths and schools such as the Durban High School, while others brought large numbers of young people to participate. Large numbers also came from Inanda and Phoenix communities, who turned out in force to support the march. The oldest participants were two 82-yearold men and a 76-year-old woman, who took the 5km route in their stride, while the event’s youngest entrant was a 15-month-old infant, who completed their second Gandhi March. “We attracted some 840 participants, and this year we attracted volunteers from the public and the Durban Youth Council, who did an excellent job in assisting,” said Ramgobin. “We thank all the participants, volunteers, service providers, the Indian Consulate of Durban, eThekweni Municipality, the Premier’s Office and the Salt March Committee for supporting this annual event,” he added.
