Blue gloves floating in the water at the crime scene is a stark reminder of what happened earlier.

Police and rescue services removed the body of an unidentified person from this pipe.

Charred remains found

The search for a missing person was halted on Sunday afternoon with the discovery of a body in the open area behind no5 shaft. Mr Mervin van Heerden was officially declared missing on Friday afternoon 3 August, when police found his abandoned vehicle at the old Evander dumping site. The dumping site did not render any clues to the disappearance of Mr van Heerden. The police made a breakthrough with the arrest of two suspects. This led to the discovery of the body on Sunday. One of the police officers told the Bulletin that they worked non-stop to resolve the case. On Thursday afternoon the police

were called to the Karmer butchery in Evander when someone reported an assault taking place. The caller said that Van Heerden was being assaulted. The police investigated but could not find any evidence of the assault nor could they find Van Heerden. SAPS then received a tip-off that Van Heerden was murdered. Again, the investigation was fruitless. The discovery of Van Heerden’s car, however, was a turning point in their investigation. The car led the police back to the butchery where a crime scene was discovered and a man and a woman were arrested. One of the suspects allegedly then cooperated with the police and took them to where a

body was found. The police still needed to identify the body as it was very badly burned. The body was discovered in an old abandoned pipe. The pipe had to be cut open to be able to remove the body. Members of Govan Mbeki Municipality had the task of removing the body. A search party was organized by Mr Andries Lee of Delta1 rescue for Sunday morning. Delta1 assist the police with search and rescue on a regular basis. The Bulletin was also included in the search party. Upon arrival at the gathering point, the team learned that the police may have made a breakthrough and may have discovered the body.

Sunday proved to be a long “waiting” day as the police continued their interrogations and investigations. Later during the day, one of the suspects took the police to where the car had been found as well as to where the body was found. The Bulletin learned that the case of Mr van Heerden might not be as clear-cut as it seems. There are allegations of domestic violence made against Van Heerden as well as complaints made by him in turn. The Bulletin also learned that there was a legal battle for the custody of the butchery and that Van Heerden was successful in regaining full control of the butchery during last week. Accidents claim lives and leave many injured Find us on Facebook - The Bulletin For the latest in breaking news go to www.thebulletin. co.za

A number of serious accidents occurred during the past weekend. The Bulletin highlights a few. An accident occurred on the R29 between Leandra and Devon at approximately 20:15 Sunday night. Two cars collided head-on, injuring nine people, of which three were fatal. Langamed and Mpumalanga EMS transported six injured to the hospital. The road in both directions was closed until the forensic team completed the investigation of the scene. A pedestrian was fatally injured Sunday morning (5 August @ 04H45) when he was struck by a Toyota Fortuner. The accident occurred at the Brendan Village turnoff on the Evander/ eMbalenhle road. The driver of the Fortuner told the Bulletin that he didn’t even see the pedestrian at all. (The pedestrian was wearing all black clothing) The road is very dark in that area, there are also a lot of red and yellow cat eyes indicating the turnoff. The name of the deceased has not yet been released and the SAPS are still investigating the incident. A pedestrian was struck on the N17 near the N17 garage early on Monday morning. An accident occurred on the N17 Saturday 4 August when a VW Polo collided with an approaching truck. The truck driver alleged that the Polo didn’t turn but kept driving straight at him. The two occupants of the Polo were injured and transported to the Hospital by Langamed and other emergency services. The accident happened approximately 3km from Trichardt in the direction of Kinross.

Tsalanang flats residents targeted The residents of Tsalanang are being bombarded with attacks on their homes. One night during the week the water pipes were cut and copper pipes damaged. The strange part is that only tenants that should move according to contractors were targeted, later one of

the prominent figure’s car war targeted and stoned. Sunday night saw yet another attack on his home with people throwing stones through his windows. The contractors seemed to have taken to strong arm tactics to try and have people removed instead of doing the correct way.

Five Mpumalanga municipalities to be under administration - Change needed Five Mpumalanga municipalities are under consideration to be placed under administration in terms of section 139 (1)(b) of the Constitution for gross financial mismanagement. This was confirmed by Cogta MEC, Speedy Mashilo during the SALGA Mpumalanga Provincial Members Assembly today. Under the leadership of former Premier David Mabuza, local government in Mpumalanga was brought to its knees as service delivery collapsed and money meant for the people was used to line the pockets of those in Mabuza’s network of patronage. While placing eMalahleni, Govan Mbeki, Msukaligwa, Thaba Chweu and Lekwa local municipalities under administration, it will at the very least pause the rot in these municipalities. From page 1

The police are handling all allegations and are treating them all seriously in order to conclude their investigation. SAPS should be applauded for their hard work in solving this case and their continued effort to finalise their investigations for a watertight case. Two accused appeared in court on Monday 6 August for formal bail applications. Ms Karen van Heerden, his ex-wife, and an employee, Mr

Nothing will change unless all those implicated in the corrupt dealings that have crippled these municipalities are arrested and barred from dealing with public money. In a meeting with between Cogta and the Parliament’s Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa), it was revealed that five Mpumalanga municipalities currently owe Eskom a combined total of R4.4 billion. This is an R2 billion increase from December 2017. Nationally, 20 defaulting municipalities, including the five from Mpumalanga, currently owe Eskom R10 billion. MEC Mashilo must really question how eMalahleni keeps returning millions to CoGTA while they owe almost R2 billion to Eskom? This clearly shows a lack of political

will, financial mismanagement, and incapacity as a result of Cadre Deployment. Below is a list of the top five Mpumalanga municipalities that contribute to the Eskom debt: Municipality and amount 1. eMalahleni - R1.9 billion 2. Govan Mbeki - R684 million 3. Lekwa - R563 million 4. Thaba Chweu - R494 million 5. City of Mbombela - R307 million The recent increase in debt shows that the province’s municipalities are still struggling to settle their Eskom accounts largely due to political interference in the revenue collection processes. It also shows that apart from only paying interest; these defaulting municipalities will once again find themselves on Eskom’s disconnection

list. Serious intervention is needed to bring financial stability to these municipalities as placing them under administration alone will not solve the problems caused by years of corruption. The DA calls on MEC Mashilo to ensure that the intervention is not just a smoke screen to make the people of Mpumalanga believe they are finally free from David Mabuza’s mafia-like grip on the province, but that the intervention is accompanied with sound financial recovery plans that will ensure that money meant for the people is spent on the people. Only a DA government can bring real change to Mpumalanga because we are the only political party with a proven track record everywhere we govern. - by James Masango MPL - DA Spokesperson on CoGTA

Charred remains found Darrello Lutgie Soetmelk appeared before Magistrate C Roos. The accused’s’ bail applications were heard in two separate hearings. Mr Darrello Lutgie Soetmelk applied for legal aid and consultations had to be finalised first. The hearings took place just before the lunch break. Accused number one, Ms Karen van Heerden, denied any involvement in the murder. She also

stated that she is well known within the community and have property in Evander as well as valuable movable assets. The Magistrate, C Roos agreed that she does not pose a flight risk. The state did not oppose her application and she was released and warned to appear in court on the 13th of September. Mr Darrello Lutgie Soetmelk’s application for bail was opposed by the state stating that the young man poses a flight risk. Captain Malotswa from the SAPS also stated that Mr Darrello Lutgie Soetmelk did not disclose his address in Jan Kempdorp, close to Kimberly. They also claim that he aided in the clean-up and disposal of the body. The charges stated that he was a murder accused. The magistrate agreed that Mr Darrello Lutgie Soetmelk has a steady job in Evander (at the butchery) and that he is now staying in Evander on a permanent basis. He does not pose a flight risk. Mr Darrello Lutgie Soetmelk’s application was therefore successful and he was released and

warned to appear in court on the 13th of September. Both Ms Karen van Heerden and Mr Darrello Lutgie Soetmelk did not plead as no formal charges were brought against them. A third suspect has been identified and is still at large.

Daar was belangrike gaste by die uitstalling.

1978 was die jaar van Grease, van Queen se We are the Champions en Van Halen se You really got Me. Weermag of swot of werk.

Daarsonder sou my lewe veel armer gewees het.

The infamous ‘Two comma Four’ This is number one of a few articles that will appear in the Bulletin leading up to a function to be held at Lake Umuzi on September 24, 2018. There certainly are more than a few tests to establish the measurement of aerobic capacity for the fitness of athletes. Aerobic capacity being: the measure of the ability of the heart and lungs to get oxygen to the muscles. An example of aerobic capacity is the body’s ability to take in and use oxygen to improve aerobic performance. One of those tests which are routinely used to ascertain the fitness conditions of soldiers in military training programs is commonly known as the “Two comma Four”. Most military veterans will remember the 2,4 km run, it’s a test that is permanently burned into memory; the “two comma four” run was a fitness threshold and must be completed in under 12 minutes. No easy run, especially when you consider the run is done in military fatigues with boots,

webbing, assault rifle and helmet. The pre-requisite for all those who did “Junior Leaders” (JL’s) officers or non-commissioned officers’ course as part of their National Service were expected to meet this minimum standard of 12 min or less for this run, running with rifle, full webbing, filled 1l water bottle, and helmet to complete their “officers / noncommissioned officers’ course”. For interest, the 1.5-mile (2.4 km) test is known as “The Cooper test”, originally designed by Kenneth H. Cooper in 1968 for US military use to test for physical fitness.

Ndumiso Lindi and Tumi Morake visit Secunda as part of their ‘Married…But Not to Each Other’ Tour Comedy’s modern traditionalist and the bad momma of comedy - Ndumiso Lindi and Tumi Morake - took their rib-cracking, hilarious new stand-up show, ‘Married…But Not To Each Other’ across South Africa and into Africa. They’ve had successful shows in Pretoria, Cape Town, Johannesburg, Botswana, Mafikeng, Port Elizabeth and Krugersdorp. New dates were also added for shows in Durban, Secunda and Nelspruit.

‘Married…But Not to Each Other’ took place at the Graceland Casino on Friday. Whilst travelling together on a comedy adventure, Ndumiso Lindi and Tumi Morake were asked by a customs official: “Are you married?” Ndumiso quickly replied: “Yes”, realised what he was saying and added: “…but not to each other.” And so, the comical journey for this wife and husband of other people began.

Coco rescued in Kroonstad My sisters and I were born about 3 December 2016 in the camp. I was looking very different from the rest of the litter, also the last born and the smallest. And so, my story begins. On a warm day in December 2016, a very friendly man came to pick us all up. He put us in a car and off we drove. Later we were in a house and were picked up with soft hands, that was stroking us, talking, cleaning and feeding us. It did not quite feel like our mother to us but we were warm, fed and loved. Then one day we were again put in a car with a bag specially packed for us with our milk and baby pap and blankets and toys. We later came to learn that these humans have taken us with them to the Cape for a 3 week holiday. There we started to get bigger, play and run and enjoy life. We were back home and Charles, my sister and I grew from tiny kittens to teenagers and we celebrated our first birthday as grown-ups of 1 year. One day I was picked up by very strange people and put in a car taken to a house I did not know. This was around Jan 2018. I stayed there for a few weeks but then decided it was time to get out and go home. Luckily, I knew my human friend Nadine and walked to her house sitting in front of the gate. This very nice lady saw me and picked me up and phoned my humans, they were there in a flash to take me home. I was not home very long when the same strange people picked me up in front of my home, put me in the car and off we went to a far place that like looked like a farm. We as Little Paws Big Hearts will never give up and as Coco was a rescue kitten after a dog was bitten and killed her mom we were not about to give up on finding her. Our mission

states clearly that we are a right to life organisation and will not leave one animal in need behind. And so, our journey starts. The Bulletin newspaper put a photo in on 2018 to help us try and find her. After no response on Facebook and social media, we realised that she might not be in town. We received information in June 2018 that she might be in the vicinity of Kroonstad possible on a plot. Driving back from visiting family in the Western Cape we stopped at the Ultra city hoping for a miracle. While we were driving we saw a man coming out of the workshop, stopped and started enquiring about plots, he then asked us to drive with him as they lived on a plot. He accompanied us while driving around to see if we could see a familiar car or a bakkie. But avail no luck and we came back to Secunda. We kept in contact with these people and they were also asking and looking for Coco. Then one day an angel we know in Secunda Whatsapp us with a possible name of the person who might have taken Coco. We started with serious detective work and then this angel Whatsapp a photo of Coco. We immediately knew that was our Coco Chanel and was even more determined to get her back. One thing led to another and last week all fell into place, with a cell number and a wonderful Detective that assisted us - phone the person about Coco. It was within a minutes after Louis had spoken to the Adjudant Jaco Botha that he phoned us back informing us that he made arrangements for us to go and fetch her. We still could not believe that after all this time we were going to see that beautifully painted face again. So, on Saturday morning we were off driving to Kroonstad to pick up our beloved Coco. The two very helpful law officers drove with us to pick up

The show is a hilarious take on the roles and regulations of marriage and the pothole-laced roads the genders have to navigate. It’s not just about marriage. It is about the society that these marriages have to survive in. Ndumiso Lindi, the gentleman of South African comedy, also known as Roosta, effortlessly blends newage style with old-school traditions. His deep voice, soul-warming smile, booming laughter, original content and seamless delivery makes for a comedy act that is outstanding and

soulfully South African. With a comedy career spanning over 11 years and numerous outstanding credentials under her belt, Tumi Morake continues to be a formidable force in the comedy industry. Her edgy and unpredictable brand of comedy has wowed audiences around the globe. When she’s not on stage, Tumi Morake can also be seen on TV screens hosting ‘WTFTUMI’ and ‘Point of Order’ as well as her channelling her talents into writing, acting and producing.

AO Nico de Beer and AO Jaco Botha. They were very helpfull in reuniting with Coco Coco. The tears just flowed when we saw her after 5 very long months. She immediately recognised us and was taken into our arms. We can say that she was taken good care of and in a good condition although she is a very

proud slender young cat. According to the law animals are property and when your animals are taken without proper permission the owner is entitled to lay charges and open a case of theft.

Springbots off to Mexico City A small remark made by First Global Founder, Dean Kamen at the Abundance 360 Conference in Los Angeles earlier this year, moved local businessman Jason English (CEO of CG-Holdings) to sponsor the SpringBots to the First Global Robotics Olympics in Mexico City. The Challenge will take place from August 15-18, 2018 at the Arena Ciudad de México. Dean said to Jason that there were a number of teams from Africa competing from the 180 countries, but none from South Africa. “I just could not understand how South Africa was not represented when countries across our borders were,” said Jason to the Bulletin, “We just had to have a team from South Africa represented!” In 2017, FIRST Global held the 1st Robotics Inaugural Olympics in Washington DC. Themed around the 14 Grand Challenges of Engineering identified by National Academies of Engineering, each year a different Grand Challenge takes centre stage in an effort to foster understanding and cooperation among the youth of the world as they use their abilities to solve the world’s problems. The challenges we face as a global society need to be solved, and the next generation can meet the task — together. The 2017 challenge hosted over 157 countries from around the globe making it the largest Robotics challenge in the world. The theme for 2017 focused on “H20 Flow”. Each year the challenge is held in a different country. For 2018 the challenge will be held in Mexico City, with the theme “Energy Impact”. From commonly used fossil fuels to environmentally-friendly resources like solar and wind, energy is a tool that powers the different parts of our world one way or another. The 2018 Challenge is set to explore the impact of the different types of energy the world uses today, and how the world can make them more sustainable A group of 4 young, highly talented students, supported by 1 Team Coach and a Team Manager have been put together to represent South Africa at this year’s Olympics. The team is tasked to design and build a robot that will simulate activities on an energy field as per the prescribed game plan. The mission of FIRST Global is to inspire science and technology

leadership and innovation in young people from all nations in order to increase understanding, impress the importance of cultural cooperation, address the world’s most pressing issues, and improve quality of life for all. PROMMAC and New Age Engineering are both local businesses in which CG Holdings is invested, and provide mechanical, electrical, instrumentation and welding services. The trio is the main sponsor behind the SpringBots together with Vodacom. According to Dany De Barros (CEO of Prommac), “We are an innovative company. Supporting the SpringBots was a no brainer. We have a legacy of supporting communities and worthy causes and this initiative by our parent company CG Holdings goes a long way towards building the future engineers of our world. Education is the way to a better future and supporting the SpringBots is just another way we can make a small difference to society” Joseph Zinyane (CEO of New-Age Engineering) concurred, “We expect that the future of manufacturing will be heavily disrupted by robotics and artificial intelligence, and as a group we are constantly striving to lead the way in innovative solutions for our clients. Sponsoring the SpringBots is simply another way we can contribute towards placing SA Youth on the international map and breaking the stigma that Silicon Valley is the only place where innovation happens” Team South Africa In 2017, South Africa placed 77th out of 157 countries in the Robotic Olympics in Washington DC. Strong relationships and networks were formed across the globe with other students, so much so that Team Australia paid a visit to team South Africa in June 2018 to give the team some valuable advice and support in terms of building their robot for this year’s Olympics. Since announcing the sponsorship of the team in March 2018, Prommac and New Age have funded the entire process and have assisted in building unbelievable partnerships with schools, universities, educators, parents and innovation specialists. According to Jason English, “we have taken on the challenge to help grow STEM (Science, Technology,

Engineering, and Mathematics) in South Africa through establishing robotic clubs as an after mural activity in schools. The team is under the mentorship of Wernich van Staden, an educator at Hoërskool Uitsig and is managed by Roxanne Reddy who are both making incredible progress with the team.” Roxanne Reddy stated that “Our team is made up of 4 kids who call themselves, “The SpringBots”. These kids come from various backgrounds as well as disadvantaged schools and underprivileged communities. Each have a passion and desire to make a positive impact within their communities as well as globally and all want to be future Engineers. We are delighted by the partnership the CG Group has given us, and without them, we would not have been able to participate in this year’s Olympics. We had numerous challenges in terms of getting space to build a mock field setup, and Jason through his network managed to secure Vodacom as a partner who then gave us a facility at Vodaworld to practice. This has helped the team prepare well for the event.” The team members include: Masana Phumudzo Mashapha is a grade 10 learner at Pretoria Girls High. Tshenolo Mokwana is a grade 11

The history of Women's Day The holiday commemorates the national march of women on this day in 1956 to petition against legislation that required African persons to carry the 'pass'. The 'pass' was an identification document which restricted a black South African's freedom of movement under apartheid. The pass allowed them to enter 'white' areas. The 'pass' had come into force under the Urban Areas Act (commonly known as the pass laws) of 1950. On August 9, 1956, 20,000 women staged a march to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to protest against proposed amendments to the act. They left petitions containing more than 100,000 signatures at Prime Minister J.G. Strijdom's office door. They stood silently outside his door for 30 minutes. The women then sang a protest song that was composed in honour

of the occasion: Wathint'Abafazi Wathint'imbokodo! (Now you have touched the women, you have struck a rock.). How is National Women's Day celebrated? In the 60 years since, the phrase has come to represent women's courage and strength in South Africa.

In 2006 a re-enactment of the march was staged for its 50th anniversary, with many of the 1956 march veterans attending. The month of August is now dedicated to women and is marked by several government events such as a trade fair for women's crafts and a symposium on labour issues.

learner at Olievenhoutbos Secondary School. Barbara Moagi is a grade 12 learner at Hoërskool Uitsig, head girl and also the Team Spokesperson. Mikhaeel Reddy is a grade 12 learner at Hoërskool Uitsig, head boy and also the Team Captain. When asked what it was about the robotics challenge that interests him, Jason concluded “We don’t know if we can build a better world for our children, but we know we can build better children for our world. As First Global rightly states - This is not about robotics, this about lessons in humility, lessons in collaboration, lessons in problem solving and the robot is simply the vehicle that brings everyone together. We are delighted to be part of their journey and look forward to their participation regardless of the outcome.” The Bulletin and the local community would like to wish the team good luck in Mexico

World of Engineering / Artisanship Exhibition On 21 July 2018, Sasol in partnership with SAIMechE (The South African Institute for Mechanical Engineers), Osizweni, Megchem, PDPS and Gert Sibande TVET College held an exhibition on engineering and artisanship careers at Bethal. The aim of the exhibition was to award Bethal High school learners to spend the day witnessing and participating in displays and events that demonstrate the science and maths principles they learn at school and to show them how these principles are applied in real life “things” that they can relate to. The exhibition targeted the grade 9’s in order to entice them to make the right subject choice for grade 10 if they see a possibility in a career in engineering. It’s an engineering awareness and motivation which SAIMechE (The South African Institute for Mechanical Engineers) Sasol, Osizweni, Megchem, PDPS and Gert Sibande TVET College partnered in collaboration to make it happen. A committee was formed to plan and build the equipment needed for the 9 exhibitions that covered all disciplines of engineering and artisanship. The Career Days at schools made us aware of how uninformed learners at schools are of engineering related careers. We realised that without a frame of reference with respect to engineering, a learner would hardly be drawn to a career in engineering/ artisanship. For those that do not have parents in those fields that share their knowledge with their children, there

is almost no opportunity to build an understanding of an engineering career as the equipment used to demonstrate all the interesting science and maths principles are no longer available to teachers. Science and Mathematics became the dreaded boring subjects to many learners who find it difficult to see the sense in learning it. The exhibition took place at Ikhethelo Secondary School in Bethal, where the learners rotated in groups of 15, spending 40 minutes at each stall where an engineer explained his/her exhibition in detail which impacted around 220 learners. The different engineering and artisanship disciplines were portrayed. Apart from enjoying a day away from school, learners from grade 9 were entertained by a team of 9 engineers and artisans by showing them interesting engineering /artisanship marvels in a relaxed atmosphere. The day turned out to be extremely successful, delightfully exceeding our expectations and spawning a tremendous lot of interaction from the learners. Thank you to Ikhethelo Secondary School , AD Nkosi Secondary School, eMzinoni Secondary School, SAIMechE,Osizweni, Sasol, Osizweni, MegChem, PDPS, and GS TVET for the effort that made this possible and to each of the 40 volunteers that gave their time to make it happen. We hope to grow this to perfection, and that the event can be extended beyond Secunda.

Winterkonsert, warm klanke

Note word uitgepak en stoele reg geskuif.
