Shelton of 810 CrossFit walked into Grand Blanc High School (GBHS) to talk to Athletic Director Jerrod Dohm. The result of that meeting was Bobcat Barbell, a program that works to strengthen and cultivate community among all high school athletes, as well as any other interested student.
Joe DeGain, the owner of 810
CrossFit, makes time every full school day, Monday through Thursday, 2:35 to 3:35, to work with students on building what he refers to as a “base of athleticism.” By building that base, student-athletes gain a better foundation to support the development of technical skills for their individual sports.

DeGain explains how the program has grown so dramatically that certain teams, like varsity softball and boys soccer, have actually created their own “custom programs.” This individualized training happens in 810’s gym on Embury Rd, between Grand Blanc Rd and Cook Rd. Anyone seeking this same culture of encouragement and inclusion can find it during the elementary school, middle school, high school, and adult level CrossFit classes at 810.

GBSD GIVES BACK by Laura Diaz
The Grand Blanc Girls Swim and Dive (GBSD) team call themselves “Swim Family,” so you can only imagine how deep their roots are. Led by Coach Emily Overmyer, well known as Coach O, GBSD have their own traditions and sense of pride. She leads her team by example and determination, but also teaches her swimmers to give back to our community. This year, the team dedicated a meet to the Patient Navigation Program at Hurley, calling it “The Pink Meet.” The young ladies designed a shirt, sold raffle tickets and invited friends and family to the event to raise money and awareness. This charity event allowed GBSD to make a difference to so many women who are facing cancer treatment.

Together with coaches and family, the team raised $1,538. On December 19, they presented the money with 22 blankets to Marsha Schmit (RN, BSN, CBCN Hurley's Breast Health Nurse Navigator) for the program. Marsha says, “Our Bobcats girls help to comfort women in their treatment since their temperature changes due to the hormones or medicine. The money raised even helps them to provide some primary needs, or in some cases, provide the holiday spirit to families who have a warrior facing a battle!� The GBSD family is proud of what they do, proud of their leader, and they are here to make difference as athletes, community members, and Grand Blanc students. Once a Bobcat, always a Bobcat!

JACKUP CANCER @GB HIGH GB honors Jack Scribner We were blessed to have the opportunity to cover a very special community event at Grand Blanc High School. Jackup Cancer Night was the idea of Coach Mike to bring awareness to a recent Grand Blanc graduate, Jack Scribner. Jack, a true student-athlete, earned varsity letters for the Bobcats in both basketball and baseball each of the last two seasons and was a member of the National Honor Society, graduating in the top 3% of his class. Jack was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia shortly after the baseball season last spring. Pete and the entire Scribner family would like to thank the Grand Blanc community for all their prayers and support as Jack is currently in remission. Grand Blanc is a very special place and we are all pulling for the Scribners. All photos were taken by another fantastic Grand Blanc High School intern, Madison Hayden.
