“LUMINANCE CENTER� is a facility serves as a memory center in the northwest side of Beijing to provide a personalized funeral service with a touch of humanity.

Huge populations came with high fatality rates, the consequent demand for funeral services have left the already crowded Beijing almost without any suitable location.

Funerals and other related services have become unaffordable and overprice, truly a service of luxurious. At the same time, the entire industry is outdated; the process of all funeral services are singular without any personalized approach; the space of funeral centers has a poor environment which lack of basic humanization design elements.

This project is intended to create an opportunity to serve people as a bridge connecting their deceased loved one, to Increase the possibility of more diverse and personalized choices in this industry, and to bring living people closer. The three main components of the LUMINANCE CENTER are commemoration, funeral, and community.

Welkenraedt Funeral Centre Location: Welkenraedt, Belgium Design: Daniel Dethier Project Year: 2010 Area: 35413 sq.ft (3290 m²) Dethier Architectures developed a very specific concept for a funeral home and landscaped cemetery, built on a former clay extraction site. The landscape guided the architectural composition of the funeral centre.

The chapel is the singular element of the project, referring to the process of death, which goes from the material to the ethereal, from the physical to the spiritual.

The program of the building is structured in three main spaces: common areas, vigil-rooms, and spaces of service and administration.

A hollowed, jointless block 50 by 70 meters.

The ceremonial halls – two for 50, one for 250 people – are simply boxes of split stone, set open-fronted into a second, slat-steered casing of glass.

FIRST, IT COULD BE PRETTY, BE DELIGHTFUL, BE UNIQUE, WHICH IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING I’VE GOTTEN FROM THIS PROJECT, THE FAITH. SECOND, THE RESPECT OF DEATH. THIRD, THE NEEDS OF THE FUNERAL AND DEATH RELATED ISSUE COULD BE REALLY DIFFERENT. THE DESIGN RESEARCH OF THE PARTICULAR ISSUE NEED TO ADJUST MEASURES TO LOCAL CONDITIONS.

Summary THE CHAPEL IS THE KEY OF ANY TYPES OF FUNERAL HOME OR MEMORY HALL TYPE ARCHITECTURE. THE USING OF NATURAL LIGHT IS A GENERAL WAY TO BUILD THE PEACEFUL AND SPIRITUAL SPACE FOR THE CEREMONY. THE CONTINUITY OF MATERIAL AND FOCUS ON THE MATERIAL ITSELF COULD CREATE THE HOLY SENSE TO THE ENVIRONMENT. THE NOTICE OF DETAILS COULD CREATE MEANINGS. TO USE MULTIPLE MEDIA AND NEW TECHNIQUES TO ENHANCE THE ATMOSPHERE. THE EXTENSION OF SPACE CAN BE VARIABLE, THE TRANSITION COULD BE MADE BY SPACE ITSELF.

Overview of the Country China, officially the People’s Republic of China (PRC), is a country in East Asia and the world’s most populous country, with a population of around 1.404 billion.

Covering approximately 9,600,000 square kilometers (3,700,000 sq mi), it is the third- or fourth-largest country by total area.

Transport in China

Governed by the Communist Party of China.

President is Xi Jinping.

Rail is the major mode of transport in China. The railway has seen rapid growth reaching 120,970 km (75,167 mi) of railway lines making it the second longest network in the world (2016). The number of passengers transported by train has reached 2.5 billion.

Presently, there are about 1,279 air routes. Among them, 1,035 are domestic, including the routes to Hong Kong and Macau, and 244 are international. There are over 200 airports in mainland China, connecting more than 100 internal cities and 80 foreign cities.

Presently, all provincial capitals are the centers of highway passenger transport. Shuttle buses service between the provincial capitals and their cities, counties and towns.

Overview of the City Beijing, China’s massive capital, has history stretching back 3 millennia. Yet it’s known as much for its modern architecture as its ancient sites such as the grand Forbidden City complex, the imperial palace during the Ming and Qing dynasties.

Places of Interest Forbidden City The Forbidden City is a palace complex in central Beijing, China. The former Chinese imperial palace from the Ming dynasty to the end of the Qing dynasty, it now houses the Palace Museum.

National Centre for the Performing Arts The National Centre for the Performing Arts, and colloquially described as The Giant Egg, is an arts centre containing an opera house in Beijing, People’s Republic of China.

Great Wall The Great Wall of China is a series of fortifications made of stone, brick, tamped earth, wood, and other materials, generally built along an east-to-west line across the historical northern borders of China to protect the Chinese states and empires.

Environmental Characteristics Topography Beijing is located in northeastern China at the northern tip of the North China Plain. The city itself lies on flat land (elevation 66 to 200 ft) that opens to the east and south. The municipality’s outlying districts and counties extend into the mountains that surround the city from the southwest to the northeast. The highest peaks are over 6,600 ft.

Climate Beijing has a monsoon-influenced humid continental climate, characterized by hot, humid summers due to the East Asian monsoon, and cold, windy, dry winters that reflect the influence of the vast Siberian anticyclone. The coldest month is January with an average temperature of -5°C (24°F), and the hottest month is July with an average temperature of 26°C (79°F).

Natural Features Beijing’s mountainous areas produce various minerals such as coal and iron ores as well as building materials such as granite and marble. Five rivers flow across the city, including Chaobai and Beiyun rivers in its east and the Yongding and Juma rivers in its west.

Overview of the Site Purple Bamboo Park (also called Zizhuyuan Park) is one of the seven largest parks in Beijing, China. It is located in the Haidian District of northwestern Beijing. It is a typical of classical Chinese garden style, mountain-water landscaped garden. There are five bridges connecting the lakes, islands and hills into a single integrated area. To the north of the lakes the Changhe River flows through.

The three major lakes in the park were formed in 1159. During Ming Dynasty, the Wanli Emperor built a royal garden on the bank of the lake in 1577, and the bamboo was planted following that. In 1954, the park was rebuilt and open to public.

The space requires a taller clearance, since some of the collection’s pieces were large, as well as highly controlled natural light. In both spaces, it maximized the flexibility of artificial light by means of track lighting that crosses the lower interior cordons of the joist.

Occupancy Loads IBC 1004.1.2 permits 30 net square feet per person for an assembly: exhibit gallery and museum classification. As previously stated, the net square footage of the museum space is 22281. Divided by the 30 net, the maximum occupancy for the museum is 742 people.

Exiting the Building - Number of Exits: 3 - Arrangment of Exits (½ Diagonal Rule): The ½ diagonal rule requires that exits be at a minimum half of the furthest distance between two corners of the space. The longest diagonal is 214’. 110’ is the distance between two exits.

- Travel Distance Compliance: Under the IBC and ½ Diagonal Rule, the building pass in terms of number of exits and distances.

Building Analysis Egress & Traveling

Conclusion As an art gallery, the building has an open floor plan, a beautiful corride, and elegant exterior. It could provide lots of opportunities to re-create a different type of space. The atmosphere that this architecture has is peaceful and calm, which was the main reason I chose the building. It’s like a piece of work by itself; it could uniquely merge into the surroundings of Purely Bamboo Park in Zizhuyuan Area.

Accessibility - Accessible entrances All doorways in buildings are at least 3’-0” wide. Entry into the basement is not accessible by elevator, which will be addressed in the futher design process.

- Accessible existing restrooms: The ADA restroom is located on the ground floor.

- Accessible water fountains: No accessible water fountain shows on the existing plan.

Plumbing (IBC2902.1) - The current number of toilets is 3 (1 ADA included). IBC requires 1 per 125 males, 1 per 65 females for water closets, 1 per 200 people for lavatories.

- There are currently no water fountains found in the plans. IBC requires 1 water fountain per 500 people.

The three main components are commemeration, funeral and community. The commemoration and funeral using may share part of the space. Community means some public area like dining, and waiting area. The goal of the project is the create a comfortable enviroment for everybody to memory their past loved ones.

THE PLAYERS IN THE DESIGN PROCESS? The funeral industry in China keeps a traditional way of doing things; it has their own rules. Providing such changes is hard.

However, the industry itself is not in the right place of serving the public. Such problems like overprice, and overbooked, and the unfriendly environment are like the hidden rule of the industry.

The Ethnography Study The city is second when it comes to high urban population. This population gain is mainly driven by migration. Because of their historical and cultural background, the people are proud to be from the capital and have an attitude that’s called ‘Great Beijing-ism’ towards the people from other parts of China. The overwhelming majority of Beijing’s population is Han (Chinese). Beijing has a small but growing community of foreign residents. Beijing locals lead interesting lives. During the day life is very fast paced, but at night things tend to slow down.

Tell One Story

Mr. Zhang’s mother passed away unexpectedly during the summer. The entire family freaked out. The great sadness was all over the place and full of everyone’s heart. It’s hard to deal with everything emotionally and phiscally while planning out a ceremony. Everything was a hurry. Everybody tried to act themselves together, and be strong. To book the appointment with the funeral home, to list the guest, to plan the ceremony, to file the death document, it was not as easy as it was supposed to be. Just accepting the fact of death was hard enough.

The price was overcharged. However, for the sake of love, Mr. Zhang and his family just paid whatever they asked straightly. It’s a way of showing the respect of the passed family member.

Conclusion In conclusion, the funeral industry in China is a hard field to make progress. At the same, it means it’s essential to open mind and bring the new concept and blood to the traditions.

The three primary functional zones mentioned in the programming plan could provide an innovation of how funeral home works in China, and help to reduce the sadness of losing the loved ones.

Concept Statement Luminance: the intensity of light emitted from a surface per unit area in a given direction. It represents those glowing energy in the life; it could be huge as the sun, as well as small like a candle.

The memorial home could be a place that releases positive energy that makes people who are coming reduce the pain.

Concept Narrative The Luminance Center will be an existence that brings the light and warmth to the world. The radiation level of one building may be not broad, but it would brighten the sky a little bit more, like a burning candle in a night. According to the meaning above, the design language would be something bright, warm, peaceful and delightful. Smartly using natural and artificial light would be something that needed to consider and used as one of the main design elements.

Concept Statement Merging: to combine or unite into a single entity. It represents the connection between life and the past, the bonding between people and their memory, the relationship between generations. It’s like an intersection that endless flow of the present met the river of past.

Concept Narrative The Luminance Center will be a connection point for memory and the reality. People will bring their present and past come here to celebrate the living life instead of death. The design philosophy would focus on the intersection part to emphasize the relationship between living and the pass. Curve and arch will be used in the space as the visualized “connection� meaning. Vast clean line and less decoration will be the primary design language, which would build a peaceful and respectful environment.
