WELCOME ‘After two years of cancelled Festivals due to the pandemic, I am delighted that Cheltenham Jazz Festival is back this year with a brilliant line up set to fill the thriving Festival Village, along with an impressive array of fine new talent across the ...around town venues and free stages.

The return to the Festival is even more exciting as we celebrate our 25th Festival! We will be bringing back some familiar faces from the past 25 years, along with special performances from our guest Artistic Curator Gregory Porter and long-time Associate Curator Jamie Cullum.

In 1880, Henry Weston first started crafting cider from the bittersweet apples grown on his farm in Much Marcle, Herefordshire. Over many years, he refined the art of traditional cider making.

Today, Henry Westons Vintage Ciders are produced only from apples grown in a single year’s harvest in the three counties of Herefordshire, Gloucestershire and Worcestershire. The ciders are always slowly matured, and spend time in traditional oak vats, which ensures exceptional taste.

Jerwood Jazz Encounters Jerwood Jazz Encounters supports jazz musicians to develop and create new work in unusual spaces, encouraging them to expand their practice and take new risks. This year’s Festival includes the premiere of Invisible, Real, an audio-visual installation and performances created by Faye MacCalman, as well as a two-day Creative Lab bringing together emerging musicians and industry professionals.

Between them, Sinatra and Cole’s recorded output represents the pinnacle of jazz-infused pop music from the 1940’s through to the 60’s, including Fly Me To The Moon, Mona Lisa, I’ve Got You Under My Skin and Unforgettable at the forefront.

BBC Radio 2 Celebrates Jazz at the 25th Cheltenham Jazz Festival Henry Westons Big Top £32 £38 £54 or £60 BBC Radio 2 Celebrates Jazz at the 25th Cheltenham Jazz Festival and the 100th anniversary of the BBC, in a special concert to be broadcast on Sunday Night Is Music Night. 70 musicians including the Guy Barker Big Band and BBC Concert Orchestra will premiere a unique symphonic celebration commissioned by the Festival. The concert will also feature the greatest jazz hits of the past 100 years alongside some of the standout moments from across the Festival’s 25-year history featuring guest appearances from Gregory Porter, Paloma Faith, Imelda May and new artists Adeline and Georgia Cécile.

Nitin Sawhney is one of the most distinctive and versatile musical voices of his generation, achieving an international reputation across every possible creative medium. Three times winner of the Blues Awards as British Best Harmonica Player of the Year, Errol Linton is a harmonica wizard from Brixton (of Jamaican descent), a singer, a songwriter, a painter and the hero of the London Underground, where he has played his unique and highly original blend of blues with hints of reggae for 30 years. Explore what happens when our inner worlds are taken out of the dark and mental illness is free to be talked about without stigma or shame. Anonymous real-life stories collected from the public meet magical and playful subconscious worlds, conjured through collaboration with visual artist Rhian Cooke and sound artist Nikki Sheth to merge woodwind, vocal and electronic layers with floating projections and sound art. Neil Charles: Dark Days Parabola Arts Centre £18 Bass player and composer Neil Charles launches a new commission taking inspiration from American writer James Baldwin’s searing essay Dark Days, in which Baldwin draws on his experiences of prejudice to create a personal vision of a better future. With a top quartet featuring Cleveland Watkiss on vocals, Pat Thomas on piano, Neil Charles and Mark Sanders on double bass, Neil’s music eloquently captures the intensity and optimism of Baldwin’s essay. Nu Civilisation Orchestra presents Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On Jazz Arena £22 Tomorrow’s Warriors presents the Nu Civilisation Orchestra for a musical exploration of Marvin Gaye’s iconic album What’s Going On, alongside excerpts from the soundtrack to Trouble Man. The 24-piece orchestra, conducted by Peter Edwards, will reflect on our current times through the lens of Marvin Gaye’s incredible catalogue. What’s Going On was released in 1971 and Gaye’s masterpiece gave voice to a generation, reflecting on the violence and turmoil of America with laser-sharp precision. Widely recognised as one of the most important albums of all time, it continues to resonate with the inequality, struggle, and uncertainty of the modern day.

At the forefront of the movement, the band blends elements of Scottish traditional music seamlessly with jazz and noise music to create a beautiful DIY ethic. Led by founder, drummer and composer Graham Costello, this sextet features pianist Fergus McCreadie, Harry Weir on tenor saxophone, Liam Shortall on trombone, Joe Williamson on guitar and Mark Hendry on electric bass.

A truly multi-faceted artist, Cherise is fast proving herself to be one of the most fiercely talented young musicians around. Her effortless, irresistible vocal alongside her honest and soulful song writing manage to be simultaneously contemporary and timeless, firmly marking her out as one of the most exciting talents around. Owing much of her early musical development to the highly respected grass roots organisation Tomorrow’s Warriors, she has played venues including the Royal Albert Hall and Washington DC’s Kennedy Centre, as well as performing alongside artists including Nubiyan Twist and Corinne Bailey Rae. 7.30-8.45pm

Jazz Arena £25 Dave Douglas and Joey Baron are giants of the New York scene and firm Festival favourites; trumpeter Dave Douglas appeared at the festival in 2003 and 2013 with his own groups and again in 2015 as a member of the Lee Konitz Quintet. Joey Baron is one of the few drummers that epitomize musicality, creativity and freedom in its purest form. A long-time collaborator with the likes of John Zorn and Bill Frisell, he has performed and recorded with an impressive list of musicians including Dizzy Gillespie, Chet Baker and Stan Getz. Expect thoughtful beautiful interaction between trumpet and drums that will appeal to any lover of good music.

Cheltenham Town Hall £13 £26 Astonishing saxophonist, composer and band leader Nubya Garcia is one of the leading forces in the UK’s new wave of afro-tinged jazz and one of the most in-demand musicians on the scene. Garcia began her music education at Camden Music, before joining Tomorrow’s Warriors in her late teens and completing her training at Trinity Laban Conservatoire, going on to win multiple awards and high praise for both her playing and compositions. She collectively founded septet Nérija, later joining Maisha, a sextet fronted by Jake Long and the Theon Cross Trio.

The voice behind the prestigious 2021 John Lewis Christmas advert with her haunting cover of Together in Electric Dreams, the exceptionally talented BRIT School graduate is a thrilling and uncompromising live performer.

Lola is joined by bass player, vocalist and songwriter Adeline. Having grown up on a diet of Stevie Wonder, Donna Summer, Aretha Franklin and Prince, Paris-born New Yorker Adeline is a tour de force and former front woman for the nu-disco band Escort.

To mark the 50th anniversary of Jimi Hendrix’s masterpiece Electric Ladyland, guitarist, vocalist and arranger Denny Ilett has assembled a 16-piece band of leading jazz musicians including Laura Jurd, Yazz Ahmed, Iain Ballamy and many more to set about crafting new arrangements of Hendrix’s revolutionary and iconic music.

Taking the rock, blues, jazz, funk, soul and psychedelic elements of Electric Ladyland into a whole new area with rave reviews and sold out shows across the country, the Electric Lady Big Band make a hugely anticipated stop at the Festival.

Best known for her classic hits The First Cut Is The Deepest and Angel Of The Morning. Her highly anticipated autobiography Soul Survivor is released the week of the festival.

Henry Westons Big Top £30 £35 £40 or £45 BRIT and Ivor Novello Award-winning songwriter, platinum-selling and chart-topping artist Tom Odell makes his Cheltenham debut at our 25th Festival. At just 21, Tom’s self-penned debut album Long Way Down earned him a number one album and top 10 single with Another Love. His new material features eerie synths and head-rattling beats but with a lightness of touch that means Odell is able to pull off pop’s greatest trick; hiding sadness in the melodies. In these strangest of times, this new music marks the start of chapter two in Odell’s ongoing musical journey.

Laura Jurd leads this 11-piece ensemble recreating the music of her album Stepping Back, Jumping in, described as ‘a stylistic reinvention from the esteemed trumpeter’ with ‘moments of unalloyed joy’ by Guardian critic John Fordham. The ensemble features members of Laura’s regular quartet: pianist Elliot Galvin, bass player Conor Chaplin and drummer Corrie Dick, plus the Ligeti Quartet and three brass players. One for lovers of contemporary jazz and contemporary classical music.

Gary makes his well overdue Cheltenham debut accompanied by the UK’s leading spiritual jazz outfit Maisha.

Suzi Dian takes the lead vocal line with its euphonic quality resonating round this legendary venue, executing a steady yet emotive crescendo and diminuendo in unity with the rest of the band. The five musicians work in glorious harmony from start to finish, reworking a selection of diverse cover versions that have been collected from various places creating a musical journey in its truest form.

Iain Ballamy with Rob Luft, Huw Warren, Conor Chaplin and Will Glaser Parabola Arts Centre £18 Renowned saxophonist and composer Iain Ballamy returns to Cheltenham to present Fascinada, a joyous celebration of five Brazilian musical legends. The programme features magical improvisations leading into original compositions in the spirit of Ivan Lins, Milton Nascimento, Tom Jobim, Joao Bosco and Hermeto Pascoal. BBC Young Generation Artist guitarist Rob Luft, the superb pianist Huw Warren, bassist Conor Chaplin and drummer Will Glaser join Ballamy to create a concert that promises to inspire and feed the soul.

Cheltenham Town Hall £20 £34 Referred to as the father of Ethio jazz, multiinstrumentalist Mulatu Astatke is one of the most infectiously happy performers you are likely to see.

At the grand age of 78, the performer blends his traditional instrumentals with Ethiopian inspired rhythms and melodies to create a wonderful, earthy sound onstage. Expect rousing free-collective improv exchanges from insistently riffy, bitter-sweet anthems, and rhythmic underpinnings that sometimes float and sometimes throb from an incredible backing band, featuring Byron Wallen on trumpet and double bass player John Edwards.

Mike Westbrook: The Uncommon Orchestra: On Duke’s Birthday Parabola Arts Centre £18 Composer and bandleader Mike Westbrook makes his long-anticipated debut at Cheltenham Jazz Festival.

We’re thrilled to present this great band performing Mike’s best-known work dedicated to the memory of Duke Ellington on what would have been his birthday.

The Uncommon Orchestra is an internationally recognised West Country big band with two incredible albums: A Bigger Show and In Memory of Lou Gare.

The late Fela Kuti was the first great musician to fuse jazz, funk and soul with highlife and other African rhythms to create Afrobeat: music with the explosive energy of James Brown but the heart and soul of Nigeria. Fela’s youngest son Seun Kuti has a sound which is just as compelling as he continues his father’s legacy though his famed live shows. Egypt 80 join him on stage with funky horns, chants and kinking beats that will be sure to get you dancing!.

Multi-award-winning drummer, producer, composer and BBC 1Xtra resident, Moses Boyd makes his Cheltenham debut. A graduate of the prestigious Trinity Laban Conservatoire and student of Gary Crosby’s Tomorrow’s Warriors, Boyd has garnered a Mercury nomination, MOBOs, Jazz FM, and Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Awards for his self-released project Displaced Diaspora, including a number of collaborative albums with saxophonist Binker Golding under Binker & Moses. It should be no surprise that Boyd’s music seems to awaken something in its listeners, as the influence of the West Indian churches he grew up in anoints his sound with a divine euphoria that feels as at home in a jazz venue as it does in a nightclub.

One of the UK’s most successful singer-songwriters, Gabrielle returned to the top of her game with her 2019 album Under My Skin reminding the world of Gabrielle’s distinctive vocal gift – one that flourishes with equal measures of soul and emotion. Having successfully proven herself all over again, Gabrielle is now set to celebrate her long career with her first Cheltenham appearance which will see her performing her massive hits including Dreams, Rise, Out Of Reach and Give Me A Little More Time alongside her highly acclaimed new material.

As Gil Scott-Heron’s long-time collaborator and band member, Brian Jackson wrote, arranged and produced over 10 albums over an eight-year period. Time and again, that music has found its way onto multiple new recordings including Common’s The People and Kendrick Lamar’s Poe Mans. Almost 40 years later, Brian is still building with artists as diverse as Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad (Midnight Hour, A Tribe Called Quest) and vocalist Gregory Porter as well as stints as a touring keyboard player with the likes of Stevie Wonder; Kool & the Gang; and Earth, Wind & Fire. Expect an evening of Brian’s take of Gil Scott-Heron classics alongside new work and nods to his distinguished session career.

Inspirational pianist Myra Melford leads this all-female quintet featuring Myra on piano, Ingrid Laubrock on saxophones, Mary Halvorson on guitar, Tomeka Reid on cello and Susie Ibarra on drums. Along with beautifully melodic compositions, Ingrid Laubrock is one of the Cheltenham Jerwood Rising Stars from the early years of the Festival and is now a major star in New York.
