Hospital hat-trick: New mother Dayna with son Charlie and the Pink Ladies at Frankston Hospital. Picture: Supplied
Three generations born at hospital THE third time’s a charm(er) for a volunteer at Frankston Hospital who welcomed the birth of grandson Charlie this year. Pink Ladies secretary Heather Watts gave birth to second daughter Dayna at Frankston Hospital 28 years ago and this year it was Danya’s turn to welcome son Charlie to the world. Chelsea resident Dayna chose Frankston Hospital for the birth of Charlie. “It’s close to home and my friends all said how good Frankston Hospi-
tal was,” she said. “Charlie had a hard time coming out but it all worked out well. “He was facing the wrong way, so they took me to theatre and turned him around. After that, I was able to give birth naturally.” The Pink Ladies volunteer at a cafe at the hospital and raise money to buy medical equipment. Heather says Frankston has changed a lot in the three decades since she was in the hospital’s birth suite. “Maternity was in another part of
the hospital and the Pink Ladies was a funny little shop down the corridor,” she said. “The Pinkies” are now located at the hospital’s main entrance. Heather, who also works as a lollipop lady, joined the Pink Ladies two and a half years ago. “I decided to join to give back to the community,” she said. “It’s a nice thing to do when you’re semi-retired as you start to miss the company and the interactions.” Charlie is now three months old and regularly visits the Pink Ladies.

KINGSTON Council wants state government support to upgrade sports facilities for soccer, netball, football, cricket and bowls clubs. Applications are now open for a number of sports facilities grants programs and Kingston Council has put forward a range of projects for investment. Kingston mayor Cr Steve Staikos said council and the Victorian government had a strong track record of working together to fund new and improved facilities for sporting clubs. “We’re keen to continue our strong partnership of investing in top-quality sporting facilities to transform ageing buildings into modern accessible multi-use centres that meet the needs of everyone including juniors, female and
athletes with a disability,” Cr Staikos said. “All the grants require council investment in the project in addition to Victorian government funding, and Kingston has put aside money in our future budgets to ensure these vital projects proceed if our grant applications are successful. “I now call on the Victorian government to support these fantastic local projects.” Council is applying for grants to upgrade Carrum’s Roy Gore Reserve, install hybrid synthetic turf at Edithvale Recreation Reserve and Keeley Park and sports lighting at Mordialloc’s Jack Grut Reserve among the sports projects.
A SURVEY of baby snapper in Port Phillip has recorded the highest count in 26 years, surpassing previous peaks in 2001 and 2004. Victorian Fisheries Authority boss Travis Dowling said the baby snapper boom would herald an “unprecedented influx” of small snapper in 2022 and bigger snapper – over 40cm – in 2025. “Our fisheries scientists have never seen baby snapper numbers as good as this in all the years they have been conducting the surveys,” Mr Dowling said. “Port Phillip is the most important spawning area for snapper in central and western Victoria so this is very good news for anglers who love catch-
ing this iconic fish. “The survey measures the abundance of newborn snapper 3-10cm that have survived through the recent springsummer spawning season. Anglers will notice exceptionally high numbers of undersize snapper over the next few years in Port Phillip Bay, Western Port, and central/western coastal waters. “It’s important that these undersize snapper are handled with care and released as soon as possible to maximise their survival, which is typically high. “The minimum legal size for snapper in Victoria is 28cm, and the daily perperson bag limit is 10, of which only three can be 40cm or over.”
