Ms Murphy will speak at the event, alongside Jodie Belyea from the Women’s Spirit Project, Aboriginal Women and Gurindji Community Member Deb Mellet, CEO of Peninsula Health Felicity Topp, and Frankston councillor Claire Harvey. Mordialloc movie nights PETER Scullin Reserve will transform into an outdoor cinema next week. From March 10 to March 14, a series of classic movies will be shown at the Mordialloc reserve. They include Jurassic Park, Happy Feet, The Wizard of Oz, and Romeo and Juliet. The Mordi Movies event begins with a showing of Hairspray, presented in partnership with the Melbourne Queer Film Festival. The events will also feature local performers, kids activities, food trucks, a candy bar, and the Kingston Arts bar. Kingston mayor Steve Staikos said that he is excited for the event to return after last year’s COVID-19 cancellation. “We’ve all missed being out and about and catching up with friends and family over the past couple of years, and Mordi Movies provides the perfect opportunity to do just that.” “There’s nothing quite like watching a film under the stars and we’re incredibly proud to be offering a program full of classic films and family favourites,” he said. “We’re pleased to be able to present Mordi Movies as an alternative community celebration and look forward to the return of MordiFest
in the future.” Tickets cost $5. Children under thirteen can attend for free if accompanied by an adult. Funds raised will go towards the Kingston Charitable Fund. For a schedule and tickets visit kingston.vic.gov. au/mordimovies
Frankston fosters Fijian friendship A SISTER city agreement with Suva in Fiji is set to be officially signed this month. Frankston Council approved the establishment of the sister city relationship with Suva in September last year. In November council signed the memorandum of understanding. Cr Kris Bolam, who was mayor when the decision was made, has travelled to Fiji this week to formalise and sign the agreement. Ratepayer money is not being used to fund the trip. Honourable Premila Kumar, the Fijian minister for industry, trade, tourism, local government, housing and community development, is expected to meet with Cr Bolam to sign the document. Frankston also has sister city partnerships with Susono in Japan and Wuxi in China. FORMER mayor Kris Bolam signing the MOU to make Suva in Fiji a sister city. Committee to assess foreshore future Brodie Cowburn brodie@baysidenews.com.au A COMMITTEE will be set up by Frankston Council to give residents a say on future plans for boating on the Frankston foreshore. The release of the state government’s recreational boating action plan raised eyebrows among Frankston environmentalists recently. The document outlined that planning for a boat harbor in Frankston should commence soon, reviving a concept thought by many to be dead in the water. In October 2019, Frankston Council abandoned its plans for a safe boat refuge at Oliver’s Hill after the state and federal governments failed to commit funding to the project. The release of the action plan has put the project back on the agenda. In response to backlash from environmentalists, Frankston mayor Nathan Conroy has acknowledged that the prospect of a boat harbor in Frankston “is of concern to our community”. He confirmed last week that council is setting up a foreshore advisory committee to “create a vital forum for residents and community groups to provide input”. “This will also provide an opportunity for com-
munity groups which share an interest in and a passion for the foreshore to come together to gain a greater understanding of the state government’s project and voice their concerns,” he said. “The recreational boating action plan was launched independently by Better Boating Victoria. Council has not been involved in setting any forward agenda for what Better Boating Victoria aims to achieve. However, we are supportive of working with them and the community to learn more about their plans. “Council does not have a preferred location for a safe boat harbour or firm view on the project at this early stage and we look forward to receiving more information from Better Boating Victoria.” Earlier this year, Better Boating Victoria told The News that “the location and scope of any facility would be further explored through consultation with locals, user groups and facility and land managers.” “There is limited availability of public destination facilities in this section of the bay, and the provision of additional berths, moorings and tourist jetties will aim to accommodate future growth and support local boating tourism,” a Better Boating Victoria spokesperson said (“New boat facility plans on the horizon” The News 31/1/22).
I’m working hard to ensure that our community’s voice is heard. If I can be of assistance with any federal issue, don’t hesitate to contact me. I am happy to help.
